Dear Friends:
It’s hard to believe that I’ve completed over 11 years at Our Redeemer. This year I hit my 65th birthday and it was an occasion to reflect upon my life. It was a great birthday to celebrate 39 years in the ministry, 42 years of marriage, and a life filled with good memories. I am in good health, I look forward to continuing my ministry here at Our Redeemer for years to come, and I am thankful to God for his many blessings. Next year I will celebrate 40 years of ordained ministry. How fortunate I
am to be at Our Redeemer where it really is: The most joyful place to do ministry.
We have a great staff. Ann Badertscher and John Glessner have been providing inspiring music for 40 years. Sharon Edmonson also leads two youth choirs. Inspirational music is a core value and strength of this congregation. Patty Erickson has been working with our youth for 30 years: first, as a volunteer and for the past 11 years as our youth director. We have a great office manager in Char Cable, our facility manager Jim Hoffman keeps the grounds clean and well manicured, and our new pre-school director Cindy Myers is doing a great job. We enjoyed having our intern Rebekah Swanson for 8 months of this year, and look forward to a new intern beginning September 2018.
It was a great year as we celebrated our 60th anniversary. What a joy to have all 3 senior pastors together at the 60th anniversary banquet. It was such a joy to host a classic car show, have a sing-along movie night with an Elvis impersonator, and enjoy a special Reformation organ concert.
In the past 5 years we have replaced our gas lines, painted the outside of Endter hall, purchased a new organ, and completely repaved our parking lot. In addition to those items we also had a 60th anniversary project to redo our sanctuary floors and repaint Endter Hall. Our facilities are well maintained and reflect our love of God in our care for His church buildings.
Despite the many good things happening at Our Redeemer, It is a challenge for churches in America today. Fewer young people are joining churches. More people say they are agnostic or atheist. We are becoming a more ethnically diverse culture. These are all challenges that mainline church must face.
This past year we welcomed 8 new members, we baptized an additional 11 members, including 4 adults. There were 6 members who died. Our attendance went down from 174 in 2016 to 164 in 2017.
One of the ways we are exploring to meet the challenge of a more ethnically diverse community is to work with St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Santa Ana. We have supported their “tamales and testimony” program, and we are exploring the possibility of sharing an intern and doing cooperative ministry with them. They have a vibrant Latino ministry that is very involved in the Cursillo movement, and by working together we might be able to strengthen both ministries. Their pastor just took a call, so things are on hold until their new leadership is in place.
I look forward to serving you in the coming year, and celebrating God’s presence in our lives and in
our community.
Blessings, Pastor Brian
