Dear Friends: “Don’t get caught out of your comfort zone.” That is a catch phrase of a commercial on TV and is how I have traditional felt about being involved in interfaith organizations….until recently. This past year I have gotten involved in the Garden Grove interfaith council. The goal of the organization is to promote understanding between religious groups in
the community and promote peace with the community. The president of the organization is a Missouri Synod Lutheran pastor. I was impressed by the cooperation between Muslim, Sikh, Mormon, Buddhist, Roman Catholic, protestant and other groups who meet each month. We sometimes hear rhetoric that all Muslims are terrorists and want to destroy Christians and all other groups. That may be the case with ISIS in the Middle East, but it is not the intention of the Muslim community in Orange County, California. If fact, one of the first things that caught my eye, was a young Muslim woman who was organizing meetings between Muslim, Jewish, and Christian youth. The goal was to foster understanding and respect between the groups. The interfaith council respects the differences of each faith tradition, and regularly has a representative from the different groups share their faith with the group. I have already had the opportunity to lead a meeting, sharing my understanding of the Lutheran expression of Christianity and the work of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church within our local community. The council also likes to foster relationships between the religious communities and the civic leaders of Garden Grove. When religious groups are in dialog during peaceful times, it leads to trust and better understanding should disagreements arise within our city. Representatives from the mayor’s office, police department, and other city agencies regularly attend the meetings to communicate issues confronting the city. When I first arrived in Garden Grove the city was considering authorizing a gambling facility in Garden Grove. I became aware of the issue through the interfaith council, and later spoke at a city council meeting in opposition to the measure. I am still trying to figure out what it means to be “evangelical” and share my distinct Christian faith while cooperating with non-Christian groups for the greater good of our community. I’m still not really “in my comfort zone”, but I press onward toward the goal of that Biblical image where swords are beaten into plowshares and we learn to live in peace. I think it is what Jesus would do.
In Christ,

I’ve always been a proponent of praying the way you can -- not the way you can’t. While many of us are content praying at a set time each day, others find that prayer method difficult. They need other prayer options to explore and experiment with. And since God doesn’t demand we all pray the same way, we can find ways to pray that suit our nature, lifestyle, age, and experience level. Perhaps affirmation prayers as defined here are something that will be right for you. Try it and see.
Affirmation prayers are a declaration of our readiness to God’s movement in our lives. They are powerful, positive statements that declare how we want to live. If we allow ourselves to say yes to the workings of the Spirit, we are able to change and move on.
Whatever our circumstances, we are all in need of God’s grace. God’s grace, and our efforts to acknowledge and embrace that grace, are what affirmation prayers are all about.
As we read or write prayer affirmations, we establish a dialogue with our self, with God, and with others. We ask, “What feelings, aspirations, or desires are emerging within me?” As we write and use affirmations, we are encouraged and empowered to follow our intuition and lifelong dreams. Our deepest desires come to the surface. We are inspired to write down what we really think and believe, and from that we go to God with a new attitude in our prayer. We are ready to listen, speak, and act. We are open in a new way for the Spirit to do God’s purposeful work in our lives.
Here are three affirmations for you to try. Read them out loud to yourself and choose one or two that feel right to you. Make copies and place it where you’ll be sure to see it (bathroom mirror, refrigerator, car dashboard). Read it aloud to yourself each day. (If none of these affirmations fits, write one of your own. But read these to give yourself a sense of what an affirmation prayer is.)
First Affirmation Prayer: For Healthy Relationships. Dear God, today I am better equipped to live in intimacy with another person. I have a deepened self-awareness, which leads me to a relationship that is healthy and whole. I no longer deceive myself by entering into harmful relationships that cannot fulfill my real needs. I have a greater sense of my own needs and an understanding of my past. I am ready to accept the challenges of true intimacy. Amen.
Second Affirmation Prayer: For a Healthy Body. Dear God, I know enough about food to nourish my body properly and I have excellent health. I enjoy my food, but I eat to live. I do not live to eat, as some people do, and I know when to stop eating. I am not enslaved to food. I will buy good, wholesome foods for myself. I will eat slowly and chew well to enjoy each bite. God, today I eat in healthy ways so that my body can return to its most healthy and balanced state. Amen.
Third Affirmation Prayer. For Holiness. Loving Jesus, today I take time to be in the presence of God and nurture my soul. I sincerely pray, I keep myself aware of you all day long, and I “do what Jesus would do” in the situations I find myself in each day with others. I am a person who lives in holiness. Amen.
Affirmations are not a new concept. The letters to the Philippians written by Paul, the apostle, contain words of affirmation. In fact, more than half of his letters to the church at Philippi consist of praise and thanksgiving to God and affirmation about his faithful friends. He knew there would be hard days ahead. His letters, read aloud at assemblies, gave these first Christians a heart full of courage.
If you want to replace your critical inner dialogue and prayer with positive, life-giving language, then affirmation prayers are for you. The conversations we repeat to ourselves and to God are crucial in determining our outlook, attitude, behavior, and path in life.
Enjoy this new prayer method! And may the Spirit lead you to the heart of God as you pray.
With gratitude, LynneLynneLynneLynne.

Thank you all so much for your prayers and kind words after my father's death.
He was a man of great faith and love of family, and he enjoyed visiting Our
Redeemer in the past, especially for Living Pictures. I miss him so much already,
but thankfully my faith reminds me that I will see him again, and so I am at peace.
Thanks again, my church family, for your love and support! ~ Sharon Edmondson
Thank you to all who prayed for our family and sent cards and notes after
Chris's dad passed away. His passing was very sweet with so many family
members at his side and called to say goodbye. His pastor was amazing and
helped us journey to his final breath. Thank you so much for all of the
support...it is amazing to have such a caring church community.

September is here and school will soon be starting. Our staff is getting
excited and our daycare children will be coming back after the Labor Day Holiday.
We are also excited to welcome back to Our Redeemer Preschool, Suzette Lopez,
as our Director in training :) We are all looking forward to a great school year.
Again this year, we will be having our Parent Orientation Night for our Preschool
Parents. It is where the parents can meet the teachers, learn about their child’s
day at school, and ask questions. As of this writing, we still have some space in
most classes.
When preschool begins, on the 14th, we will concentrate on making new
friends. And of course we will be having our Annual Back to School Night, and Ice
Cream Social.
Come by and say Hi,
Sue

Regular Walking Reduces Dementia Risks
Want to have a clearer mind and healthy body as you age? Start walking and keep walking! Two studies in a recent issue
of the “Journal of the American Medical Assoc.” have added to evidence that walking and other physical activity keeps
your brain functioning better as you age and may reduce the risks of dementia.
How Does Walking Help?
There are many possible ways that walking helps maintain thinking functions. First, it reduces the risk of other diseases
and conditions that can affect blood flow to the brain, such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
Second, exercise increases blood flow to the brain while decreasing blood pressure. Walking may also help stimulate
your brain functions in seeing new sights, chatting with others that you meet along the way, and just getting out of the
house. For everyone, daily walking is the best prescription for health as you age. Having trouble getting started? Call up
a friend and walk together! Having a buddy to walk with increases the chances of you actually doing it. Start now and
embrace a stronger body and clearer mind.

WHAT’S COMING UP AT ORC…..
Bishop’s Gathering
Bishop Murray Finck will be retiring in May of next year. This September he will host his last Bishop's
Gathering for congregation. At the gathering he will share his vision of the church, the issues facing the synod
in the coming years, and the challenges of our congregations working together to spread the gospel in
Southern California and Hawaii. Anyone who is interested is invited to a meeting on Sunday, Sept. 20th at
Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Anaheim from 2-4:30p.m. The address is 621 S. Sunkist, Anaheim.
Scrip Cards are coming to ORC!
On September 20th and 27th, church council president John Leeb will be taking orders and answering questions about a new fundraiser on the patio between services. Scrip cards are a painless way to raise money for our Lochaas Scholarship Fund. You write out a check for $20, for example, and receive a gift card to the store of our choice for $20. How does the church make any money, you ask? The company who issues the gift cards, Scrip Pro, donates a percentage (usually between 3% and 10% depending on the store) back to the church. Higher-end retail stores (Eddie Bauer, Nordstrom’s, Barnes and Noble, etc.) have higher returns than gas stations. But all orders are welcome! If you know you will be spending $100 at a grocery store (Ralph’s , Albertson’s, Stater Bros.) in the next month, order a card, pick it up the first Sunday of the month on the patio, and you’re ready to go. John will be taking orders at the end of each month, ordering the cards, and delivering at the beginning of the next month. For a full list of vendors and the percentage each returns to the church, go to scrippro.com. I haven’t been able to think of a store that is not on the list.
The Men's Breakfast Fellowship will meet Sat., Sept. 12th, 7:30 a.m. in Endter Hall. All men of the
church are invited to attend. A great breakfast is served by our "church chefs". This is a great time to get to
know the other men at ORC. The speakers for the morning will be three of the students,
Emmanuel, Trevon, and Ryan, who recently went to Detroit for the National Youth Conference. It's always a
great time to have the youth tell us what is happening with the younger generation.
Don't forget to bring your cans and bottles that help support the
Compassion International students.
Sunday, October 4th @ 3 pm
The first Sunday of October is Saint Francis of Assissi Sunday. He was known as a monk who loved animals and had a special rapport with the animals. We will gather on the patio at 3 pm and have a short service that will then include an individual blessing for all animals that are in attendance. It’s a great opportunity for others at the church to know more about you through your pets and to set aside a time to ask God to bless these special animals in our lives. We will provide snacks for pets and people alike following the service.

Hello Our Redeemer! My name is
Charlene Cable, the new Office Man-
ager! I was born and raised in Albu-
querque, NM and moved to Garden
Grove in 2011. My husband Bran-
don and I just celebrated our 15th
year anniversary. We have been
blessed with three beautiful children Calianne (3),
McKayla (9) and Caiden (11). I have a bachelors in
Business Management and worked for the City of
Albuquerque in Accounting for 19 years.
My passions are cooking, scrapbooking, and the
outdoors such as camping and taking the kids to the
beach. I am extremely excited to serve here at
ORC and look forward to meeting you! Please
stop in and say hello!
Blessings ~ Char
So long, farewell, … I have to say good-
bye! (I bet many of you sang this in the
tune from “A Sound of Music”). It is
harder than I thought it would be to leave
this amazing congregation! I am not
leaving due to dislike or regret. Instead, I
will be working alongside my husband
Shane, to help our family business,
California EMS Training, grow and
succeed. Our office is in Los Alamitos, across from the race track,
so stop by sometime and see me, or if you need CPR certification,
we can help you with any/all types of certifications.
These past 17 months have been filled with many blessings. I am
most grateful for the unconditional love and respect I received from
the volunteers and co-workers/staff. I want to thank you all for your
constant prayers for my family, especially Dean with his ongoing
remission and continued prayers for Macey, as she is still recovering
from her concussion issues/headaches. I humbly ask each of you to
continue to pray for me and my family, as we can truly use the con-
tinued prayers.
I also want to thank Marie Kabarsky and all those that helped her
plan a beautiful going away “roast” for me. Thank you all for the
beautiful words, flowers, and gifts! I truly felt the love and will miss
each of you dearly. However, I will not be a stranger, and my info is
in the office, if you would like to keep in touch. Plus, who knows,
you may see me working in the office from time to time, as I have
offered to cover Charlene if she needs vacation/days off.
Please remember to give Charlene a warm welcome by introducing
yourself (and re-introducing yourselves for a while, as there are
many of you to learn the names of !). And, thanks in
advance for helping her learn the “insider ropes” around this place. I
know she will fill my shoes perfectly and you will all grow to love
her!
In God Love,
Susan Hirsch
