Redeemer Star DECEMBER 2017

Our family has always enjoyed the adventurous routine of going to a tree farm to cut down a pine tree to stand in our home as our Christmas tree. Just thinking about it brings back memo-ries of the aromas and beautiful visions of the various trees we’ve had over the years. After hauling the perfect tree out, loading it in the vehicle, and muscling it into the house, there’s still much more to do. There’s putting it in the stand and straightening it this way and that way, and then turning and turning until you have the best-looking side to the front.

Once the positioning is accomplished, everyone exhales and steps back just to admire the aroma and beauty, at least for a few moments. Now comes the time to put on the lights. It seems interesting that we look at the tree without lights and we see beauty—beauty, albeit, shrouded by darkness. Because then how anxious we all become to put on the lights so we can see the real beauty of the tree and finish with the adornment of ornaments and garland.

In one form or another, you and most Christians are going through this same routine during the Advent season. You, too, are readying your home with lights and decorations—and with a purpose: to celebrate that Christ has come as the light of the world, to shine through the dark-ness of sin and death.

KIDS FOR CHRIST Kids For Christ met in November for a Thanksgiving

Party. Our last meeting for November was on Novem-ber 29th. There will only be one meeting in Decem-

ber, on December 13th from 6:00pm - 7:00pm. Notice the time change because of the Advent Dinner.

We will resume again in January with regular times. Thanks to all who have donated the refreshments and their time. It is greatly appreciated. We couldn't do it

without your help! __________________________________________

COLLEGE HUGS Thanksgiving cards went out to our college kids and our

military that are away from home. Christmas cards will be available in the card racks for just 50 cents each.

SENIOR HIGH AND JUNIOR HIGH YOUTH

On December 3rd, both the Jr. and Sr. High Youth will go Christmas Caroling. This is a treat for our shut-ins and members in the nursing home. Please be at the church by 3:45pm and be sure to wear appropriate clothing. Also, families are always welcome to join us. When we get back to church, we will have hot chocolate and an awesome “snack”.

Senior High Youth will be ushering for the Children’s Sunday School Christmas Service on Decem-ber 17th.

On December 17th at 7:00pm, the Jr/Sr High Youth will have a Christmas party with gift exchange. Please bring a $10.00 gift to exchange. Two Words: “Cellophane Ball”.

Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Prince was given the 2017 Distinguished Service Award on October 24, 2017 at the Marriott Newport News at City Center, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Prince is the 5th District command chaplain for the U.S. Coast Guard, which is based in Portsmouth and ensures the safety and security of the oceans, coastal areas and marine transportation system within the Mid-Atlantic Region. Prince was recognized during the 92nd annual meeting of the Military Chaplains Association, a professional support and veterans service organization dedicated to the religious freedom and spiritual welfare of armed services members, veterans, their families and their survivors. The award recognizes exceptional ministry professionalism, expertise, resiliency and effectiveness in addressing the spiritual and/or moral needs and issues facing the demands of life and duty in the modern military environment.

Coast Guard Atlantic Area chaplain Capt. Bruce Boyle presented Prince with the award. “I’m very proud of him for all that he’s done,” he said. “He not only takes care of our members in the Mid-Atlantic Region but also sets a good example of leadership for our sector chaplains.”

THANK YOU FROM MAXX FISHER I am just writing to you to again say thank you and to offer a brief update of my life at the seminary.

I want to thank the Foundation, the Board of Evangelism, Individual Aid, and ALL the congregation that has kept me in their prayers and support me in this life journey towards the ministry.

I have just started the 3rd quarter of my second year. I will be receiving a Vicar-age placement in April. I have no idea where that will be or what it will look like. I do know however, that I am great-ly looking forward to the opportunity. God has blessed me with so many oppor-tunities past, present and future so it was no easy task to set aside some of them for the time being and to go right into vicarage. Now that I am, and have that clarity of focus I cannot wait to begin learning and growing under my Pastoral Supervisor at an awesome congregation.

School is still in the present and it contin-ues to go well. I love my classes this quarter. I will be learning about the Holy Spirit, Isaiah and the Prophets, preach-ing and a Christian response to world religions. I fully intend on working hard and getting feat grades that reflect learning and understanding.

I have also taken on the Manager spot for our Concordia Tennis Team. We will be playing some colleges here in St. Louis as well as scheduling some matches with other local seminaries. We have a few students who are new to the game and I can already tell the season is going to be a blast .

I don’t know when I will be in town again but I know it will happen at some point. I look forward to helping with liturgy and maybe even preaching again! Being able to practice with you all supporting me does more for a young Seminarian than you will ever know. I love you all deeply. Please continue to be in God’s Word and share His Word to those in the commu-nity of Seymour. We all need it so des-perately. For in Christ alone is our only and greatest hope. In Christ, Maxx Fisher

Good Friday Tre-Ore (Three-Hour) Service

April 14th, 2017 What an extraordinary occasion to gather on Good Friday after-noon for “three hours” and medi-tate on the crucifixion of our Lord, who vicariously took our sins upon Himself, suffered the punishment we deserved so that we could have forgiveness of sins and eternal life. The “three hour” service will consist of seven twen-ty-minute segments, with a five minute interlude in between. Each segment will focus on each one of the Seven Last Words of Christ spoken from the cross. Here is a schedule of the after-noon:

Luke 23:26-34 Rev. Martin Keller

12:25p.m. “Paradise” Luke 23:35-43

Rev. Craig Muhlbach

12:50p.m. “Woman, here is your son…”

John 19:23-27 Rev. Philip Bloch

A Blessed Christmas to Our Redeemer Family Our families wish all of you a Hope-filled Christmas! God’s blessings on your celebra-tions and worship, as you recall how our Savior, Jesus Christ, came into this world to live, die and rise again so that you and I could have forgiveness, new life and salvation.

It is a tremendous blessing for our families to be a part of the family of God here at Redeemer. This Advent and Christmas season, let us follow the shepherds’ example to not be content with keeping the news to ourselves, but to tell everyone around us the good news of great joy that is for all people that a Savior has been born, He is Christ the Lord, who has saved us from our sins and gives us eternal life.

Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you!

RLC Foundation Student Aid Fund The Redeemer Foundation has granted funds to mem-bers of RLC studying to be church workers since 1983. This school year funds are being granted to 5 members, including Vicar Maxx Fisher; Pre-Seminary Student Jacob Sipes; Deaconess Student Abby Currao; Whitney Pottschmidt, Special Education; and Kourtney Pottschmidt, Elementary Education. Each of the above will receive $3,000 for the 2017-18 school year. The Foundation has a special fund for assistance to students which will be depleted in 2018. The primary source of funds for the Student Aid Account is the loose change in the collection plate on the fifth Sunday of the month which usually occurs only 4 times each year. Memori-als and individual contributions also help, as well as Thrivent Choice Dollars. The Foundation could use an infusion of funds for this account. Please help the Stu-dent Aid Fund and allow the Foundation to continue to support our young members pursuing their education for church work.
