Cruising my way through the Captaincy YearI AM currently writing this column on my phone whilst on an Alaskan Cruise, which explains why I’ve not been down the Club as often as normal. I don’t expect any sympathy, but at least you can understand why this is a shorter piece than normal!The coming month is going to be a busy time at Harrowden Hall with my Captain’s Day taking place on June 22nd and the Summer Ball on June 25th.And then the following month it’s the Captain’s Away Weekend on July 12th-14th at Hilton Puckrup Hall, Tewksbury.Please support these events because they promise to be wonderful occasions, as always.Roy Pouncey tells me that the Family Fun Day on May 19th was very well supported again this year so we would like to express our thanks to all involved in organising the day.The weather was kind for the first hour or so and then the heavens opened so ‘Plan B’, ie get inside quick, was needed. A special thank you to Martin Wall and Chris Reading who donned their aprons and ensured a good time was had by all despite the rain.On the same weekend, the Fish Plate Cup Final took place with Lee Gardner and Peter Linnitt winning 2&1 against Stephen Etheridge and Andrew Grimmitt. ANDREW Loasby and Ged Eady are in the final of the Fish Cups after beating Andrew Yearsley and Chris Hartley 4&3 in the last four.NEIL Smith is the leader of the Men’s Order of Merit after six events as he has a 50-point advantage from Tony Wheatley (280).WILLIAM Wilkins carded a magnificent total of 24 points over nine holes to win the Friday Evening Golf event in mid-May. Robert Hurson bagged 21 points in two of the other competitions during the month.THIS year’s Mixed Exchange Day is at St Ives GC (Hunts) on Wednesday, September 11th. WELLINGBOROUGH Ladies Scratch Team player Ashleigh Critchley was crowned 2019 County Ladies Champion after the teenager beat Leah Ribano (Northampton) on the 18th hole in the 2019 final at Overstone Park GC.After coming through strokeplay qualifying with the joint-leading score, alongside Ribano, of nine-over-par 155, the 2018 County Girls Champion progressed into the final with contrasting wins in her opening two knockout rounds.Although fellow Wellingborough golfers, and former champions, Mary MacLaren and Carol Gibbs bowed out at the quarter-final stage, Critchley made smooth progress into the last four by beating Alison Irvine (Northampton) 6&5.It was a slightly different story for the 14-year-old in her semi-final as she was taken to the first extra hole by past winner Claire Lindsay (Northampton) before progressing into the showpiece final. Wellingborough’s Ida Jane Huggins qualified for the Silver Salver Plate knockout stages but lost to Lorraine Gilder in the quarter-finals.

LADIES Captain Sally McKeown (pictured right) said: “Congratulations to Miriam Johnson’s Cecil Leitch team who had a fantastic win for their first match at Kingsthorpe - 6-1!“Unfortunately Miriam was later informed that Kingsthorpe had decided to withdraw their club from the competition.“So, just so it goes on record, well done to Jacqueline Mudd, Gill Rivers, Susan Kellett, Susan Sharp, Liz Rees and Lema Townsend for collecting the points.“The Ladies had a very good day away to Gog Magog early in May, although it didn’t seem that would be the case when we arrived to find the Pro Shop locked and nobody could access it!“There had been a power failure the previous evening and it had messed the security system up.“Luckily, I had arranged for scorecards to be sent to me before we arrived, but the buggies that had been arranged for some of the ladies were not readily available, as the keys were locked in the Pro Shop.“The staff were all very welcoming and soon had the situation under control, although some of the Ladies in buggies only had time to play nine holes. “Most of us managed to get around the course without getting wet, so, all things considered, it was a good day. “Thanks to my playing partners (pictured left-to-right) Libby David, Diane Dickinson and Sarah Chudley.“The following day, we welcomed eight Woburn Ladies to Wellingborough for a friendly match. Hopefully, this fixture will be a regular exchange. Sadly the Wellingborough Ladies lost, but we look forward to visiting Woburn next year.“There was another friendly match against Northampton when teams of 12 play against each other. The match was drawn, but Northampton were the winners last year, so they retain the Plate.“In recent county competitions, Wellingborough members Diane Dickinson, Pauline Kendall and Gayner Arnett all picked up prizes in the Vets Spring Meeting. Well played, ladies.“Judith and Doug Chapman have kindly offered to host a Vintage Afternoon Tea on Thursday, July 18th at their beautiful garden in Great Harrowden. Crawley leaves best until last in Higgs Bowl

MEGHAN MacLaren remains in the mix for a 2019 Solheim Cup place after grabbing third place in the Jabra Ladies Open to move up to seventh in the qualification standings.With the top three in the LET charts earning an automatic spot in the European team, plus the best five in the world rankings, to face USA at Gleneagles on September 13th-15th, the Wellingborough pro still faces a tricky task to gain selection.After missing out on qualification for the US Women’s Open in May, MacLaren will almost certainly drop down the standings as several of her nearest rivals have the opportunity to pick up valuable points.MacLaren will now be hoping to make the most of the four remaining qualification tournaments, starting with the Thailand Championship on June 20th, the Evian Championship towards the end of July and the Women’s British Open at Woburn GC the following week.

With the Ladies Scottish Open being the last qualifier on August 8th-11th, MacLaren will be chasing automatic selection or hope to catch the

eye of European Team Captain Catriona Matthew, who is adding four more ‘wild card’ picks to her line-up.

Ryan Evans, meanwhile, made the cut in all his appearances on the European Challenge Tour in May but was unable to

challenge for the main prize money in any of the three events in Spain and the Czech Republic.The Wellingborough professional was 45th in the Challenge de

Espana at Izki GC and then finished in 47th position in the Prague Golf

Challenge at Prague City GC.Evans showed signs of an encouraging return to form in the D+D Real Czech Challenge at Kaskada Resort towards the end of the month, as he smashed

five birdies and an eagle in a five-under-par 66 on the final day to grab a share of 31st spot.

European team selection is still within sight for Meghan

STEVE Crawley compiled the joint-third best score of net 68 in the NGL Higgs Bowl as the Wellingborough member came within two shots of lifting the first County men’s piece of silverware this year at Delapre Park GC.In a field of well over competitors, the 10-handicapper (pictured left) birdied the 10th hole and kept the big numbers off his scorecard throughout his round before finishing in style with an eagle two on the 18th hole.Despite his incredible finish, Crawley had to settle for fifth on countback as home club member Dave Savage took the plaudits from Lee Hitchcock (Northampton), who carded the best gross round of three-under-par 66.In the Ladies Vets Spring Meeting at Overstone Park GC, Diane Dickinson was in top form on the short holes as the Wellingborough golfer won the Bronze Division 1 prize on countback from Overstone’s Gina Evans (33 points), with Pauline Kendall (32) third.Club-mate Gaynor Arnott (33) produced a sensational last

dozen holes as she came through to bag third in Bronze Division 2, Carol Gibbs finished fifth in the Silver category, while Liz Beaumont was the only Wellingborough member in the top 10 of the Senior Cup.


CLUB pro James Whittemore (pictured below) will be introducing a new exciting coaching facility at Harrowden Hall which includes progressive skills testing across all playing disciplines, where coach and student can work together as the young golfers improve week-on-week through the Junior Golf Passport’s pages.Whittemore and the child can ‘stamp’ the Passport as each new technique is learned. This innovation helps enhance the coaching opportunities for our club pro, while building confidence for the junior golfer, maintaining and increasing interest.Club Junior Organiser Nigel Grimmitt explained: “Our current and future juniors will have full access to the Junior Golf Passport which comes with a smart new wallet to maintain top condition, while the coach can print out award certificates and specific coaching tips

Passport to success for juniors at Harrowden

JUNIOR members Jack Meakin and Isaac Redding played big roles for the Northants Boys Under-14’s and Under-12’s team as they defeated Cambridgeshire at Overstone Park GC.

Redding (pictured front cover & right) was successful in the foursomes with Harrison Taylor, before picking up another point in the singles, while Meakin (pictured left) was also victorious in his individual match as the county recorded a 13-6 win.

Defeat ends Hollingsworth retention hopes

WELLINGBOROUGH’S hopes of a successful Hollingsworth Trophy title defence ended in their last group match as defeat at Whittlebury meant they finished behind leaders Kingsthorpe.Adam Sherlock and Theo Brown, pictured, were in great form for the away side in the opening tie as they triumphed 4&3, but a couple of defeats on the 17th hole and two more down the closing hole meant the reigning champions finished second in the 2019 standings.

WINNING just one out of six ties wouldn’t normally be described as the ideal start to a campaign but it proved enough for Wellingborough to grab an important opening day victory.Neil Redding and Adam Perry (one hole), David Simpson and Ashley Connolly (one hole), Steve Coles and David Hawkins (two holes) and Carl Martin and Colin Barnes (one hole) all suffered narrow away defeats.But Wellingborough’s Nick Clansey and Giovanni Gioia recorded a six-hole victory to snatch the team plaudits.

WELLINGBOROUGH’S Seniors came up just short in their bid for a second home victory of the year as they were given a real challenge by Luffenham Heath.After trailing early on, Wellingborough took control thanks to Lou Everard and Andrew Charter (5&4), Iain Campbell and Peter Davies (5&4) and Graham Bayes and Richard Briggs (2&1).But a defeat on the 18th hole in the final game meant the match finished all square.

RICHARD Briggs and Peter Hooton were the star pairing for Wellingborough as they grabbed the lone victory with a thumping 7&5 success in the second tie at Northants County.Halves from Chris Dickens and Ian Jolly (pictured left) and Graham Bayes and Peter Davies in games five and six respectively were the only other positives as the home team took the other four points with holes to spare.

Wins elude Seniors in monthly friendly fixtures

MAY Day could be a pivotal moment in the Seniors Lonsdale Series as players face the task of trying to improve their overall scores in the fifth round.With the best four rounds to count from the nine events, Phil Elwick remains the person to catch after posting 33 points in the latest competition to increase his tally to 148.David Birkett bagged 36 points in round four to move above Graham Thompson into second, but fourth-placed Brian Summers will fancy his chances of moving up the leaderboard with a ‘worst’ score of 24 points.Of the players that have only played in three events, Robin Everard (115) and Nigel Sargent (110) will surge into contention with a good round.

WELLINGBOROUGH belatedly grabbed their first victory of the Cecil Leitch League season with a solid home performance against Peterborough Milton.After thrashing Kingsthorpe 6-1 away in their opening fixture at the start of the month, the Wellingborough ladies subsequently found out that their opponents could not fulfill their remaining fixtures so pulled out of the League, meaning the result did not count.To their credit, Jacqueline Mudd (pictured) and Gill Rivers, who both recorded wins at Kingsthorpe, quickly put the disappointment behind them as they both secured big victories against Milton.Although the visitors replied with points in games two and six, Wellingborough held the upper hand in the other matches as Pat Briggs, Bina Shah and Pat Dawson confirmed the team success.

NGL Ladies Scratch LeagueWellingborough 3Northampton 0 at Kettering GC

A FOURTH whitewash victory in five outings over the last two years was the perfect way for Wellingborough to begin their Ladies Scratch League title defence as the team came good in convincing fashion against Northampton at Kettering GC.Ashleigh Critchley, who is also a member at Kettering, used all her local knowledge to good affect as she recorded the biggest win for Wellingborough.The County Ladies Champion defeated fellow teenager Katie Amos 5&4, while Amanda Rawson (3&2) and Mary MacLaren (one hole) were also successful for the reigning champions.Wellingborough will now need to wait until Sunday, July 14th for their next outing when they play Northants County, who drew with Overstone Park in their first fixture, at Northampton GC.

What do you do in your spare time?I help look after my grandchildren, I enjoy photography and just being out and about, watching sport, I love dress making - so I keep busy.

What is your guilty pleasure?Red wine.

What has been the highlight of your golfing career, so far?Being County Girls Organiser. I did that for around seven years, and really enjoyed that. I had Charley Hull for a short time before she turned pro, and obviously Meghan MacLaren too, and many others.

If you could go anywhere right now, where would it be?I would love to go on a cruise. I would love to go to New York, because I’ve never been. Or any rail journey.

What is the best film you have seen?A Star is Born.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?Share the winnings with family and friends.

What has been the best advice you have ever been given?Know when to keep quiet.
