THE VICE THE VICE CHAIRMAINS CHAIRMAINS

CHATTERCHATTER Good afternoon,Today we welcome the officials, players and

supporters of Redditch United FC to Victory Road for this Southern League Central Premier League game.

We also welcome our match officials and trust they enjoy their visit and have a safe journey home.

We give thanks to our sponsors today namely Mr Matt Saunders (Ollie’s dad) Mr Graham Barnes (Finlay’s dad) and long-term supporter Mr Ron Baldry. The match ball is being sponsored by Mr Paul Andrews and again grateful thanks.

Not sure if you were present at Tuesday’s evening match if you were unable to attend it could be said that you missed a “cracking game”

Royston controlled the opening and started well scoring a goal courtesy of a header from their outstanding number 5 in the 4th minute, midway through the half our skipper Seb Dunbar collected the ball out on the left side of the pitch and took on the opposing full back and inches from the by-line crossed for Will Davies to head home to level the score, from then on till half time we took total control of the game and the neutrals would consider us unlucky not be ahead after the first 45 minutes. The second half had a similar story with Royston ‘bossing’ the first period but as the game went on, we were in control and looked the more likely to score, having the ball cleared off the line and 2 saves from their keeper, however on balance a draw was the right result.

Numerous people have commented on the beautiful surface of our pitch and how green the grass look it was mentioned by somebody “it’s like playing on a bowls green” and we must give thanks to our Head Groundsman James Mayhew (Jim) and his assistants in particular Matt Murphy and Andy Stewart.

It was nice to see former players supporting the club I spoke to Brian Threadkell , Tim Challis, Trevor Jones, Mark Godbold and down on holiday at Aldeburgh, Des Wilson who was with our President Robin Watson – both were brought up in Leiston and were neighbours in Valley Road - Tim and Robin were both in the 1966 team that narrowly lost to Oulton Broad in the Suffolk Senior Cup Final. Brian a former player managed by very successful reserve side in 1966 who won their league comfortably with Des being part of that team.

I believe today a former Leiston stalwart Ian Coleman will be attendance – Ian played for Leiston in the late 50/early 60s before signing for Ipswich, he played numerous games for Ipswich A and in that era the games were played at Westerfield on the old Cubitt & Gotts ground. – Ian proudly holds a pass to Portman Road the home of Ipswich FC signed by Sir Alf Ramsay who was manager at the time and I understand its always nestled safely in his wallet.

We as a club have recognised the hard work of some of our retiring committee and have given life membership to the club to Trevor and Jacqui Elmy, Peter and Jill Douglass and they have indicated that will be attending as many matches as possible – Peter in fact is still involved with the Reserve Team.

Now to our match today – like ourselves Redditch have had a couple of seasons rebuilding and at the time of the stoppage in the league (covid) we both occupied the bottom two spots in our league. We understand our visitors have strengthened their squad as we have so we look forward to close and exciting game.

Good luck to both teams

I’d safely say that anyone who came and watched the game with Royston tuesday

will safely say that it was value for money! As everybody I spoke to afterwards told me what an

entertaining game it was. What it showed me is that we can adapt our style of play and be very effective using a plan B. Royston’s shape and defensive starting position did not play into our hands so after a tough opening 20 minutes we assessed their style and came up with a counter measure and once that message got across to the lads I felt we totally dominated the game. I’ve read the Royston managers report on the game and he says that if they would of been more clinical then they could of run riot, but the same can be said for us as there was chance after chance and wave after wave of great flowing football that kept them pinned back for large periods of the game. So I think we will have to disagree there. It’s two games in and our opening games have been very positive. Myself and Darren believe that this group does have the potential to achieve something and with the support we got Tuesday, we can tell that things are heading in the right direction. Wigs.

The Blues started their home fixtures in the league with a draw as a crowd of 237 were thoroughly entertained on a mild night in Leiston, in a match sponsored by the LEISTON FC SUPPORTERS.

Siju Odelusi returned to the 16 man squad but could only settle for a place on the bench as the starting XI remained the same after Saturday’s opening day victory at Bromsgrove.

This was just the 6th meeting ever between the sides, with the Blues coming into the game never losing to the ‘Crows’.

However, as early as the 4th minute, Leiston fell behind to an Adam Murray header after a free kick from the left. The away side saw plenty of the ball and dominated possession for a fair while after but Leiston restricted them to shots on the edge of the area and optimistic crosses from the flanks. Dylan Switters looked to have had his legs taken away in the penalty area but referee Bradley Mingay waved away protests. The game started to get quite heated with both teams getting frustrated and Leiston prodded away, winning a couple of corners but they came to no avail. On 30 minutes though, great work by left back Seb Dunbar saw the player get passed to Royston de-fenders and cross from the left which Will Davies overhead kicked into the net giving Joe Welch in the visiting goal no chance. Before the break, Ollie Saunders was denied by Welch and Adam Bailey-Dennis flashed a header wide from a corner before James Brighton was shown a yellow card in stoppage time for Royston.

The game started at an electric pace in the second forty-five, and Brandon Adams went so close in the 55th minute after an excellent team move and his curling at-tempt went wide of Sam Donkin’s left hand post. Donkin saved from Harry Draper from a header moments later and Seb Dunbar slid in with an excellent tackle also with Royston applying pressure to the home goal. Dan Newton made Donkin get down low to his left but then the Blues turned the screw and dominated the last twenty min-utes. Jake Hutchings headed well wide after good work by Rob Eagle, with both sides now making good use of their substitutions. On 81 minutes, Joe Marsden showed great resilience and was thwarted by Welch while three minutes later a goal mouth scram-ble saw Royston amazingly clear off the line. Adam Mills then went close while in the 7th minute of stoppage time and Will Davies fired just wide in the last chance of the contest.

The Reserves have had a busy start to the new season with three games in eight days, we have

played two new teams in FC Parsons Drove from Cambridgeshire and Huntingdon Town also a local derby with our

neighbours Framlingham Town. The reserves have a new look this year with Harrison Bacon, Louie Bloom and Kolinio all having moved on and replaced with younger players First up we started with a home game with FC Parsons Drove with them being new to the league they were an unknown quantity. In the Matchday squad we had three sixteen year olds all playing at this level for the first time which is testimony to the hard work they have all put in since training with the re-serves since October last year and again in pre season. After a slow start where we had Joe Potter to thank for making two very good saves we grew into the game scoring five goals in an incredible fifteen minute spell either side of half time to take control of the game and scoring one more goal late on to start with a 6-0 win. Great for the boys to get their first win of the season after such a long absence from competitive football it was also really pleasing to see the three sixteen year olds make their debuts at this level and all three handled it very well. Goalscorers Wilding 2, Shopov, Godbold, Bak, sumpter. Next up we took on Framlingham Town away under lights where we had sixteen year old Harry Podds making his debut in goal replacing the ill Joe Potter. Framlingham are an established experienced team in this league so we knew it was going to be a close tough encounter where we would have to be at our best to get anything out of the game, it was a typical local derby played at a hundred miles an hour frenetic pace with both teams fully committed to get the result.

At times we had to dig in and show resilience and grind it out which for me was really pleasing to see that we have that ability as well as the qualities we shown in terms of how we can play great football. Two goals late in each half scored by Nicki Shopov sealed a hard earned 2-0 victory. Last Saturday we came up against Huntingdon Town at home who are fancied by many to be right up at the top of our league come the end of the season. Again a very close game with chances being missed by both teams , we at least held our own in the first half but a sending off for us early in the 2nd half tipped the balance in the visitors favour and despite still creating chances with ten and later 9 men we were unable to hold out going down 2-0 to a strong Huntingdon team. Over the three games I’ve been really pleased with the togetherness shown by the boys the younger lads have all integrated into the group quickly with the more senior boys looking after them very well. We have shown great desire over these three games which hopefully will stand us in good stead going forward with some challenging games coming up.

EJA YOUTH SECTIONEJA YOUTH SECTION After a tricky opening game to the season against eventual league winners Soham, the boys got their season up and running with a spirited victory over local rivals, Needham, in their second game. A good run of performances followed and before the second and third lockdowns, the boys sat in the top four of the table with it all to play for. When the season finally resumed, the boys struggled to get going albeit managing to grind out a couple of results early on. However, after taking a confidence knock in a friendly and losing several key players to injury, the performances began to spiral for the next few weeks. Despite this, performances picked up again towards the end of the season and the boys were unlucky not to add more points to their tally. Lots of good lessons learnt for the final year of EJA football and the aim is to keep everyone fit, introduce some boys to U18, and possibly adult, football as they look towards their next steps on the ladder. A tough but exciting season awaits! Will

The Leiston Youth under 14 team began their pre-season preparations last Saturday with a home friendly against Framlingham. On a hot sunny day, the boys ran out comfortable 3:1 winners as they prepare for a new season in a higher division. Framlingham made the game interesting with early pressure leading to an opening goal, Leiston equalising just before halftime. In the second half, Leiston scored twice and could have added another 5 had it not been for some inspired goalkeeping from the Framlingham keeper.

As with all football last season they had a disjointed and difficult season. Despite the challenges and their first season playing 11 a side football,

the boys won their division having played two games

less than their closest rivals and only losing two games along the way. The team, which is made up of

several boys who are playing up a year scored 69 goals in the 15 games they managed to complete in the shortened season. Sitting third at Christmas with an enforced break following the most recent lockdown the boys returned in fine form in April to fit in 9 games, winning 8 and drawing 1 before the end of the season. The team includes four Leis-ton based players who will also feature for the clubs under 13 and 14 EJA teams this season.

The under 14s who are sponsored by Aitch Group play at the Waterloo centre and have gone from strength to strength since moving to play as part of the LFC family. Many supporters will have seen the boys grow up as they have acted as mascots to the first team on several occasions.

Winning their league was a fitting end to a season in which the boys had all worked so hard as a team.

Unfortunately, the annual league presentation couldn’t happen due to covid restrictions so the boys were presented with their trophies at a team bbq in June. Following a short break, the management team have been preparing the boys for the new season. With two further friendlies before their season starts with a home game on Sep-tember 4th. The coaches said it was a pleasure to watch the boys last season, playing some great quality passing football. Which is something we have been working on with them since many of them were 7 and 8. We hope they can continue to play the right way against stronger opposition this season. Tom

The History of Redditch United

1891The Reds are one of the longest estab-lished football clubs in the Midlands, starting out as Redditch Town in the Birmingham Combination League in 1891 and being crowned first winners of the Worcestershire Senior Cup in 1894.

1893The club’s debut campaign in 1893/94 began in the 1st Qualifying Round with a 4-1 win at home against Singers FC who five years later would change their name to Coventry City. However, Redditch Town withdrew before facing Hednesford (Town) in the 2nd Qualifying Round, a pattern repeated the following season with victory over Stafford Rangers and withdrawal before facing the original Coalville Town. The reasons for the withdrawals have not been identified, but it wasn’t uncommon for clubs in the 19th Century to either struggle to fund an away trip, find enough available players, or have more important competitions to focus on.

1896Redditch Town not only dropped its suffix at the end of the 1896/97 season, but also dropped down to compete in local league football, not stepping back up until join-ing the Birmingham Combination for the 1908/09 season. This was followed two years later by a return to the FA Cup, but Redditch were well beaten 6-0 by league rivals Willenhall Pickwick in the 1910/11 Extra Preliminary Round. The final few years before the outbreak of World War I would witness just one FA Cup win for

Redditch, 1-0 at Willenhall Swifts in the 1914/15 Preliminary Round, but this would lead to the club’s heaviest FA Cup defeat of all time, 8-0 at the hands of Cradley Heath St Luke’s.

1930The club prospered in the 1930s and again 20 years later when they were Birmingham Com-bination champions in 1952 and 1955.

1971In 1971, United was added to the name and in November of that year, the club reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history. A record crowd of 4,500 rammed into the Valley Stadium to see the Reds draw 1-1 with Division Four side Peterborough Unit-ed before losing 6-0 in the replay.

1975The following season saw them join the Southern League and were promoted to the Premier Division at the end of the 1975-76 campaign having scored more than 100 goals in the process.

1979They were founder members of the Alliance Premier League at the start of the 1979/80 but struggled against the likes of Barnet and Yeovil Town in what would evolve into the Football Conference.

1989The club then plied its trade in the Southern League for more than 20 years the highlight of which was another run to the first round of the FA Cup in 1989 before losing 3-1 to Con-ference side Merthyr Tydfil in front of another sell-out crowd.

1997The club made the headlines at the end of the 1997-98 season, playing nine games in nine days due to a backlog of fixtures brought about by the poor weather and the then grass Valley Stadium Pitch.

2003At the end of the 2003/04 season, the Reds clinched an historic double promotion under the guidance of manager Rod Brown. Having secured the Southern League Western Divi-sion, the club then won two play-off matches to secure a place in the newly formed Con-ference North where they stayed for seven seasons. The Club entered financial troubles and drop from the National League North in 2011.

2011Entrepreneur Chris Swan took control of the club in March 2011, clearing outstanding debts to guarantee its continued survival. The Reds won the Worcestershire Senior Cup and a number of players made the move into full-time football including Jermaine Hylton who joined Swindon Town and Omari Ster-ling-James who went to Cheltenham Town.

2014Having just missed out on the play-offs in 2014/15, the club finished runners-up the following year only to lose out to Leamington in the play-offs.

2016In 2016, the club worked with Redditch Bor-ough Council, the FA and the Football Foun-dation as a £900,000 investment programme was carried out which saw a state-of-the-art 3G playing surface installed as well as sub-stantial upgrades to changing facilities. The new-look facilities were officially opened by Sports Minister Tracey Crouch.

A full time Academy was developed which enables scholars to take part in College and University level education along-side an elite football programme. Since its formation a number of players have developed through the pathway to senior football at Redditch United and other local Clubs.

2018Redditch United Women’s Team does the double, as they are crowned League and Cup winners.

2020Covid-19 pandemic rages through the globe meaning that he 2019/20 season is cut short due to national lockdown and Redditch are saved from near certain relegation. A new season starts later than normal in September 2020 with a new Chairman and Manger. United start strong under Matt Clarke only for the campaign to be delayed in November and eventually curtailed in February after just 8 games had been played.

2021The future for The Reds has never looked brighter – over 1000 people playing on the 3G pitch each week thanks toa devel-oping junior, education and community programme. United sell over 120 season tickets for the campaign thanks in part to the continuation of the £99 season ticket offer.

recently agreed contract terms to lead The Reds for the 2021/22 season.

Good afternoon everyone & welcome to VIctory Road the home of Leiston FC. Today we entertain Redditch United in our first Saturday home fixture of the season In the Southern League Premier Central League. Our opponents this afternoon won their opening day fixture 2-1 at home to Hitchin Town so like us they will be looking to continue their good start to the season with a positive result today. The Blues also opened their campaign with a win, an outstanding one at that, travelling to Bromsgrove Sporting & coming away with an impressive 4-0 away win! Midfielder Dylan Swittters opened the scoring very early on & striker Will Davies carries on his hot streak from preseason netting twice, with summer signing George Quantrell also scoring! The Non League Paper even described Davies’ second goal late on as ‘an awesome 25 yard screamer’ However, the inform striker may well have bettered that effort under the lights here Tuesday night against Royston Town.

Seb Dunbar sped past the defender wide on the left & his perfect cross was acrobatically volleyed home by Davies for the equaliser on the night. It was certainly a bicycle kick right out of the top draw & one that will live long in the memory. A 1-1 draw was probably about the right result in a feisty game in which both teams had periods of pressure & chances to win it, but I’m pretty certain everyone involved with the club would see 4 points from our opening two games as a more that decent start to the season.

Let’s hope for a similar performance, result & attendance this after-noon!

Enjoy the game everyone

Come on you Blues!
