Dear Parents/Caregivers, The school year is truly underway and all co-curricular activities are in full swing. The Gathering of the Tribes is gaining momentum with much interest shown. Please find the itinerary in this Newsletter. The deposit of $2,000 must be paid by Monday 18
th February. Cheques can be handed to Rebecca Van Reyk or
credit card details telephoned through. The Valentine’s Dance on Wednesday evening fulfilled all my expectations and more. The evening was well attended by a cross section of students from all year groups. It was lovely to see the New Year 7’s having as much fun on the dance floor as the Year 12’s who attended. Thanks to Mrs. Friedman and her team of teachers for putting together such a great evening. The Junior Executive announced on Friday at assembly are to be congratulat-ed on their election. They are:
Judiciary: Dylan Chilchik Gabi Karney Noah Abulafia

Lucy Roper (a former Reddam student) who represented Australia at The Hague in this format of public speaking will be the coach for students who are interested. Contact Mrs. Karney at [email protected] for further details. Monty Tait continues to carve up the waves in NSW as his ranking in surfing continues to soar. He is entered in the Junior Pro Surfing Competition and Cadet Cup being held in Newcastle this week. Fencing continues to be very popular at Reddam House and we are proud to announce that Matthew Tadros (Year 11) and Alexandre Douglas (Year 9) have both been selected to attend the Asian Games in Bangkok as part of the Australian Team. The opportunities on this trip will give the students a rich and highly engaging experience historically, artistically and culturally whilst in Hobart. Thanks Mrs. Symonds for always going the extra mile. Next week we look forward to meeting with the Year 7 parents in Adelaide Hall at 7:00pm on Monday evening and the Year 12 parents at Bondi on Thursday evening at 7:00pm. Have a great week, Dave Pitcairn. Principal.

DEBATING 2013
Welcome back to all our experienced debaters, casual debaters and never-debated-before debaters! Hopefully you will all get involved this year in debating in some form or another, whether it is in the Eastside Debating Competition or Macquarie University, Sydney University or NSW University Debating Days. We have our wonderful coach, Dhanya Mani continuing to coach most of the teams this year. Dhanya successfully coached Year 7 and Year 8 last year and both teams did very well, with Year 7 winning the Finals of the Eastside Debating Competition. Lucy Roper, an outstanding debater from the class of 2012 and who represented Australia in the Hague International Model United Nations will be coaching the Year 10 students this year. For the Eastside Debating Competition which runs during Term 1 and 2, the debat-ing program is to run slightly differently with the aim to ensure that students are giv-en the best possible opportunity to reach their potential. One team of four students will be chosen from each year group (with reserves) to participate in the competition so every selected student is best able to grow individually and as part of their team. From each team, a team captain will also be chosen to help coordinate their peers. However, all students interested in debating this year will have the opportunity to be involved with social debates and training days currently being planned during the year. To select these teams, trials will be held next week from 3.45pm – 5.30pm on the following dates: Year 8 - Monday 18th February (with coaching to continue from the following week) Year 7 - Tuesday 19th February (with coaching to continue from the following week) Year 9 - Wednesday 20th February (with coaching to continue from the following week)
Students in Year 10 Year 11 and Year 12 will be notified directly when their coaching times are.
If anyone cannot attend their specified trial and is still interested in being part of the team, please email me on [email protected] and we will try and ac-commodate you on one of the other days. All parents and students will be notified when teams and team captains are selected. Coaching sessions for teams are run once a week and all selected students are ex-pected to attend.

BLACK BELT
Congratulations to Christian Alsop who recently progressed to his Black Belt in Tai Kwon Do. This has been the culmination of many years of training since he first started at age 5. He will now continue training towards Dan levels. He has also been asked by the Master to do some teaching sessions at the Dojo. An absolutely brilliant performance and a great display of perseverance and dedication.
Superstar athlete from Year 9, Jasmine Fountas competed at the NSW Junior Athletics Championships over the weekend. Jasmine had a terrific meeting being the fastest 14 year old girl over the hurdles and the 100 meters. She then went on to beat all other 14 year old girls in the triple jump as well. Jasmine is now off to Perth for the National Championships to take on the best from across Australia.
We wish her well.
ATHLETICS
Stephanie Belovukovic, Year 7 has been invited to a special ceremony for the NSWCIS where she will be awarded a Sports Red for her performance in 2012 where she played a major role in winning the Bruce Cup for NSW at the National Schools Tennis Championships.

Just two weeks ago we had an experience of a lifetime. Camp! On the first day we arrived at Mowbray Park Farm we were introduced to the leaders and some of us students seemed petrified to start living the life of a farmer, but once we saw the baby animals and the wildlife surroundings we were eager to get started. We fed the cows, talked to the wildlife and rode horses. It was a really amazing experience. On the first night we were all thrilled to hear that we were having a karaoke party. Nobody was shy and everyone got up and danced and sang; it was very enjoyable. Everyone went canoeing the next day and it was scary yet funny, especially when we all started screaming because we were aware that there were spiders in the boat. On the second night we experienced a real Aussie barn dance. It was a real pleasure to learn more about our culture. On the last day, we got treated to a fun day at Jamberoo. Even though it was cold we all had plenty of fun and the funnel web ride was exhilarating. Year 8 camp will carry many memories for us and we will remember it forever. Thanks to Mr. Johnson for organising such a fantastic camp. Article written by Jessie Pistilli and Claire Gosbell.

CHINESE NEW YEAR
Chinese New Year, also known as chūn jié (春节, the Spring Festival) is the longest
and most important traditional Chinese festival. It fell on 10th February this year,
which marks the beginning of the Year of the Snake according to the Chinese lunar calendar. Chinese international students and the Year 12 senior executives adorned Bondi Campus with Chinese New Year decorations, such as couplets, Chinese knots and lanterns. They also ran cultural games during recess and lunch last week at Bondi campus and during lunch last Tuesday at Woollahra campus. All the students had the chance to get to know more about Chinese culture. Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 Chinese Beginners and Continuers visited Bondi Campus during lunch to participate in the cultural games. They interacted with the Chinese international students and learned Chinese New Year greetings. Year 8 and Year 9 Chinese Contiuners had their Thursday’s Chinese lessons at Bondi Campus. They observed all the symbolic items, learned to say them in Chinese and also learned about the symbolic meaning of each item. Melody Wu Chinese Teacher

ENGLISH
Students in Middle School are invited to participate in the
annual Whitlam Institute What Matters? Competition. This highly regarded competition draws thousands of entries from all over the country and encourages students to reflect on an issue of concern to them. Students are required to submit a 600 word opinion piece on what matters to them and why, exploring what actions should be taken to build a better society. What would you change if you could? What do you want others to care about? This is a wonderful opportunity for students to hone their persuasive writing skills while sharing with us their unique perspectives on the world around them. Please see me for more details. Stam Mesimeris Middle School English Coordinator
