Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 3 Issue 8 Friday 4 th September 2013 Dear Parents/Caregivers, On Friday at assembly the Middle School students were introduced to a 30 day challenge after watching the Ted talk by Matt Cutts. Matt Cutts: Try something new for 30 days It turns out, 30 days is just about the right amount of time to add a new habit or subtract one. The students were challenged to try something that would make an improvement to their lives or the lives of others for 30 days and report back after the holidays on what they had achieved. So, why is 30 such a magic number? If you believe in the theory of biorhythms, eve- ryone's body clock has the same cycle of renewal. Our physical body works on a 23-day cycle, our emotional body on a 28-day cycle, and our intellectual body a 33-day cycle. This makes one month ideal for self-improvement, although it's worth noting that this ancient theory has no scientific proof. Many medical studies show that repetition is the key to making lasting changes. In Cutts' words, ''What are you waiting for? I guarantee you that the next 30 days will pass, whether you like it or not, so why not think about something you've always wanted to try and give it a shot.'' This week sees the Year 11 and Year 12 examinations coming to an end. The Year 11 stu- dents now start their HSC after the feedback from these exams. The Year 12 students are now in their final phase of preparation for their Higher School Certificate examinations, which start in October. Congratulations to Lachlan Jones, who has been offered an opportunity to be a back-up danc- er for the finals season for Australia’s Got Talent 2013. He was spotted dancing and the or- ganisers tracked him down. There are many fundraising drives on the go for the Reddam International Community Service Project to Madagascar. Dear Parents/Caregivers,

On Friday at assembly the Middle School students were introduced to a 30 day challenge after watching the Ted talk by Matt Cutts. If you believe in the theory of biorhythms, eve-ryone's body clock has the same cycle of renewal. The Year 11 stu-dents now start their HSC after the feedback from these exams. The Year 12 students are now in their final phase of preparation for their Higher School Certificate examinations, which start in October. There are a number of very exciting activities coming up over the next two weeks that

we would like to make you all aware of.

We have opened a live auction for a number of items donated for fundraising. The

items available include wine hampers, domestic flights for two, collectable artworks and

clothing. Please go to www.32auctions.com/reddam_madagascar to get involved.

This Sunday we have the annual Centennial Park Bike Ride. The students have been

sponsored to ride as many laps around Centennial Park as possible. The event starts

at 11am and we like to base ourselves near the bike hire station. We will have a

Reddam gazebo up to make us easy to find.

We are also hosting a Premier Movie Night on Wednesday the 11th September. This

will be held at The Village Roadshow Head Office in Pyrmont. They have an exclusive

viewing cinemarette that seats 39. The film is the latest from Ryan Gosling and

Bradley Cooper and is called “The Place Beyond the Pines”. Please go to

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz5jTy_lukk , to watch the trailer.

The tickets cost $50 with Champagne and canapés on arrival.

To purchase tickets please contact Mr. Warren Garratt

([email protected]) or

Mrs. Mel Pelosi ([email protected])

I encourage you all to get involved if you can. 100% of the funds raised are going to a

very small, very poor, Madagascan community.

BIG SCIENCE COMPETITION

Jasper Lubotzky has been awarded the title of the Top Scorer in the Big Science Competition, an international science competition held in May. Jasper proved his scientific strength by competing against 45,500 students from over 580 secondary schools in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and other Asian countries. Sponsored by Rio Tinto, the one-hour competition provided students of all abilities the opportunity to test their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Covering contemporary topics like climate change, stem cells research and wireless technology, the competition uses everyday examples to test the competitors science skills. Well done Jasper!

Over the term Year 9 Visual Arts students have been exploring the history of still life as a subject matter and have created their own paintings where they have investigated a variety of painting skills and built on their techniques. Here are some of their fabulous works.

Year 11 Modern History students this year undertook their Historical Investigation assessment task in the form of FAKEBOOK. They had to choose a personality, who they were interested in and construct a FAKEBOOK profile for them. This included incorporating posts of key events, comments from other historically accurate characters and embedding a video relevant to their personality. Students were able to incorporate their familiarity with social media into historical research. Extracts of particularly interesting ones are in this week and next week’s newsletters. FILM FESTIVAL

I recently attended the launch of the REELise Film Festival with Mr. and Mrs. Pitcairn and Mr. Johnson. REELise is a local police initiative targeting cyber bullying. Students aged 12-18 are put into groups, assigned a mentor (one of many influential Australian filmmakers) and helped to create a film about cyber bullying - shot entirely on their mobile phones and edited during a series of courses held at the Apple store. The launch was impressive, attracting about 100 guests including mentors, half the NSW Police Force, local celebrities, amateur filmmakers like myself, the media and representatives from local schools (Reddam brought the coolest!). The launch was impressive considering it was done on a very low budget, (according to the Festival Director Karen Hamilton), with all the funding and supplies being donated by local sponsors and stakeholders. There was a DJ, an open bar and lots of food being brought around. The DJ was followed by a screening of Pauline Findlay s very impressive short film ’Liv’ (See http.reddottheshortfilm.com for more details on this impressive drama film), which was then followed by a series of speakers including Youth Liaison Officer Yasmin London, REELise ambassador Charlotte Dawson, A Police Superintendent and prestigious film-maker Rowan Woods. It was a very successful night and surely reached and inspired its target audience. For those of you not already involved, but interested in film (or in raising awareness about cyber bullying) I highly recommend contacting Mr. Johnson if you are a student, or directly contacting REELise if you are a parent looking to pledge your support.
