A warm welcome to the Third Term! We extend a special ‘welcome’ to

the families who joined ASB this term. The term ahead is a busy one and

we urge every student to engage meaningfully with every school day and all that it

offers- everyone must strive for maximum involvement in all spheres. The Matrics

of 2015 have their Preliminary Examinations in three weeks’ time- stay calm and

focus, focus, focus. We wish everyone an enjoyable and successful Term Three.

Herewith a synopsis of the news, many functions and events that have already taken

place in the first fortnight of T3:

We welcome Ms Yvonne Anthony back after her maternity leave.

We welcome Ms Simmy Raubenheimer to the SP Phase as Ms Karien

Heunis is on maternity leave. Ms Lizzie Mzamo is assisting with Ms Heunis’

College Xhosa classes.

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Musamba on the birth of their baby

daughter, Amber on 20th July!

Campus improvements: During the vac the Prep Computer Lab was

refurbished with new IT equipment; benches were installed at the Prep/ Pre

‘tree’ entrance and along the astro. The buildings were painted and thoroughly

cleaned. Additional outside tables and chairs for the students are being

manufactured and will be delivered. ‘Thank you’ to the IT Dept, Maintenance

Dept and service staff for all their hard work during the vac.

Gr 6 – 12 eBooks: Please note that Mr Nilo Thiart from IT School

Innovation is at ASB every Tuesday to assist parents and students with any

eBook matters. You can contact Mr Thiart on: nilo.thiart@itschools.co.za

Winter Sport: Every student is required to participate in at least one winter

sport. There are so many on offer- please contact Mr Client Musamba (Prep)

and/or Ms Shelley Robertson (College) for details and assistance.

Meaningful and constructive dialogue took place at the SP and College

Teacher-Parent Liaison meetings. Thank you to the parents (and several

students) who met with the subject teachers. If you could not make the

meetings, please email teachers who will meet with you as required.

The SP and College Mid-Year Academic Awards Assemblies

acknowledged those students who had achieved during the first half of the

year. Well done to the award recipients! We encourage every student to

achieve their own personal best during the second half of the year. All

teachers are available to assist where required.

The Gr 6 and Gr 9 students wrote the national IEB Core Skills Tests.

The Matrics of 2015 held their Dance at The Westin. It was wonderful to

start this special evening with a Welcome function attended by parents- thank

you for your warm support. The Matrics enjoyed a magnificent Dance and

and sincere thanks to all the staff that assisted with the organisation and arrangements.

The SP pupils were educationally entertained by ‘Hooked on Books’. We urge all pupils to read as

much as possible. Our Librarian Ms Linette Hugo is always open to suggestions of books our pupils

enjoy reading.

Brandon Beack (Matric 2014) was a special College assembly guest. It was inspiring to hear of Bran-

don’s current life and to see him walk in the Ekso suit! Rob Evans, Biokineticist from the Sports Sci-

ence Institute also enlightened the students at the assembly.

College students were afforded the opportunity of meeting representatives from numerous tertiary or-

ganisations at the Careers’ Expo. The Gr 10: 2016 Subject Choice Evening followed thereafter.

Staff attended an iPad Music editing course.

Varsity College is offering scholarships for students planning to study teaching. Matric teachers have

the details.

College students keen on joining the Chess Team- please chat to Ms Linette Hugo.

Congratulations to Lisa Wimmer (Gr 10) on being selected to represent South Africa in the Com-

monwealth Synchronised Swimming Festival to be held in Perth in September.

Congratulations to Caitlin Doyle (Gr 7) on being selected to represent WP in the SA Goju Kai Karate

Championships (University of Stellenbosch) this weekend.

Congratulations to Sasha Veldboer (Gr 4) on her exceptional achievements in the SA Judo Champi-

onships. Sasha won the SA championship for her weight/ age category and is ranked as the SA Cham-

pion for the second year in succession. Her team was also placed first in the team fights. We also salute

Mr Eric Veldboer, Sasha’s Dad on wining the SA Masters Champs!

We acknowledge the following Gr 7 pupils on their highly commendable achievements in the recent

IEB MATCH Examinations:

- Alexi Shaff: IEB Top 3% of candidates per subject nationally (overall result);

- Sydney Mainstone: IEB Top 3% of candidates nationally in Paper 2 (Interpretation and Appli-

cation);

- Alexi Shaff: Top 3% of candidates nationally in Paper 2 (Interpretation and Application).

Congratulations to Andreas Evgenicos (Gr 4) on being selected to join the Ajax Soccer Training

Matric Matters

Our best wishes to those of our Matrics who are involved in early practical finals. The

Dance Studies Practical is the first of these and will take place on August 13.

The last of the portfolio tasks are due and the last of the portfolio tests will be written in

the next two weeks. It is essential that full focus is given to all these portfolio tasks and

that all are completed before regional moderation which takes place in September.

There are many early finals and oral moderations taking place within the September Prelims and students must be careful to

check their individual schedules very carefully.

ACADEMIC NOTE

I (The Culture Vulture ) am taking a bow as the third term has just started and already I have some exciting report backs and ‘save the dates’ for you!

This week in assembly Erin Wood and Tessa Hijner made their choreographic debuts. Tessa’s ballet was to the beautiful song ‘Clair de Lune’ by Claude Debussy and Erin had her dancers moving to an equally moving ‘Young and Beautiful’ by Lana Del Rey. After seeing their work we are more confident than ever that our Grade 12 Dancers are going to exceptionally well in their final examina-tion on the 13th of August.

Another date to diarise is the Fashion Show on the 12th and 13th of August. Tickets are currently on sale at the College reception, and selling like hot cakes. This evening is guaranteed to blow you away. Fashion, hair, make-up, dance, lights, music, film, multime-dia… You name it – The Fashion Show has got it! Shortly after the Fashion show, on the 20th of August, Stephen Deck and his Music Department will be hosting the annual Music Concert. Make sure to save the date.

There is a lot to look forward to.

Dear Alex,

The first half of 2015 has gone by so fast! In the past year, Atlantic Hope really has grown and accomplished so much. It is with pride and grati-

tude that I write to you. This is purely a letter of sincere appreciation and will give you incite on what we have achieved with your support. Thank

you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us to reduce the plight of our vulnerable babies.

Your donation has assisted us to care for many babies. Below are some examples:

Baby A – drug addict mother, severe withdrawal on arrival, nursed back to health and now in

the loving care of his grandparents

Baby B – relinquished for adoption, mother then changed her mind – reunified with her moth-

er and grandfather

Baby C - relinquished for adoption, mother then changed her mind – reunified with his parents

Baby D – abandoned, left us to go into foster care and they have begun adoption procedures

Baby E – relinquished for adoption, mother then changed her mind – reunified with her moth-

er

Baby F – relinquished for adoption and was adopted in February of this year by a wonderful

single Mom

Baby G – drug addict mother – went into foster care with non-biological family

Baby H - drug/ alcohol using mother – went into foster care

Baby I – removed from drug using mother – went into foster care with non-biological family

Baby K – currently in our care

Baby L – currently in our care – very premature, born at 1.6kg, now weighing 3kg and growing every day!

Our staff received CPR/ First Aid training

We have maintained adequate accounting records, our Level 4 B-BBEE recognition, held a constructive AGM and reported to The Depart-

ment of Social Development.

We have received an annual grant for baby essentials, equipment and medication from the

Dischem Foundation as well as Baby City vouchers (donated by a committee at Old Mu-

tual).

Our achievements have included securing a group of private Pathologists sponsoring all

investigative blood, tissue and other testing.

Our services are used by existing and new Hospitals and Social Services within the West-

ern Cape and surrounds.

We have played an active role in looking after two infants who were suspected alleged

victims of child trafficking.

We have an administrator/ fundraiser and a wonderful team of trained carers, regular

Volunteers, Paediatricians, General Practitioners and Ancillary Service providers such as

Occupational and Physiotherapists donate their expertise.

Atlantic Hopes Social Media efforts have improved. We have an active Facebook page

with more than 1000 regular followers, are using Twitter and have a well maintained website which attracts many visitors.

We have our first major fundraiser coming up in September – we will send the details and would love you to attend if you can.

In the words of the late Nelson Mandela – “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have

made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.“

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of the Atlantic Hope babies!!!

On Tuesday this week the Matric art students visited the Field Office Neighbourhood Edition in Woodstock. Artworks by their teacher, Ms Kirsty Rielly are currently on exhibition. The students found the outing valuable and an enriching experience. Should you wish to visit the café/art wall, the Field Office can be found at No 47 Salisbury Road, Woodstock. The artwork will be up until mid-September.
