PRESIDENT’S REPORT As usual our October meeting went well; and not to be lost in the big crowd was Paul Larkings who is returning to the group after an absence. Welcome back Paul, I am sure you will once again enjoy being a part of our Redcliffe TPI family. I have included a snapshot of the main part of our TPI family as we were arriving and settling in (I apologise for not fitting everyone in the photo).

At our meeting Mick asked for assistance with our sausage sizzles at Bunnings Rothwell on 12 October, 9 November and 14 December and our Wednesday night raffles (Redcliffe RSL). We had a good response so thanks everyone. A couple more for the 9 November sizzle would be welcome - all assistance helps to

spread the workload and is very much appreciated. Don’t worry if you are new to our Bunnings team of volunteers, we will always put you on a shift with seasoned sausage sizzlers and sellers. And you will never be left alone at the Redcliffe RSL; we are always to show you the ropes if necessary. Remember that our 2015 AGM is scheduled for 2 November, and will be held immediately following our monthly meeting that day. A notice of AGM and the appropriate nomination forms for Committee positions were either emailed or posted to all financial members by Secretary Mick. Nominations for Committee positions have closed and Mick has emailed the list of candidates.

For members who were not present at our October meeting, I can inform you that I have heard the TPI Travel Pass will continue - but you need to reapply. A copy of the Application Form has been emailed to members on our email list, and a copy of the form should be included with this Commscord.

We had our usual BBQ at Jamieson Park on Friday 9 October. It poured rain at my place on the Thursday night so I was a bit concerned about the weather. But I needn’t have worried. Despite the constant threat, there was no rain, and we successfully deployed our wind protection (tarps). Once again our chefs cooked up a treat, and as usual the ladies

brought some tasty delicacies. So many thanks to everyone in our TPI family for pitching in and making it a successful barbie and we revelled in the bountiful bonhomie. We were pleased to welcome John and Lynelle Schrader who joined up at the BBQ. I am sure you will both enjoy being a part of our Redcliffe TPI family. And to top it off, Bob and Lynda Hadlow brought Bob’s injured shoulder along. He’s going to be a “leftie” for a while as he recovers from surgery. People at the BBQ may have noticed two subtle changes. The first would have been the new tablecloths we purchased - the old ones were getting a bit shabby. The second was a small folding table for our brewing corner. We acquired the table from Bunnings who were looking to dispose of it because it was too dirty to use at sausage sizzles. After some bleach and a little elbow grease it scrubbed it up very nicely. Thank you Bunnings. I mentioned in previous reports that we had acquired two frames from Bunnings, and that we had purchased a cover for one (see the photo below). With summer advancing and the need for some UV protection, we will purchase a second cover.

5

And just to prove no one is immune from our clandestine corps of camera operators, here are some more photos from the day. You can see from the photos it really wasn’t wet or that cold.

But a nice warm brew did come in handy. Thanks for the offer Ted, but I just had one (and also a bit too much to eat).

On Monday 12 October we again fired up and sizzled at Bunnings. Business was slow between 0730 and 0930 and we only sold one snag in the first hour. As usual, as soon as I walked away at 0930 the customers began to line up.

In the end we had a good result with a steady day and not too much stock left. So thanks to everyone who helped. This photo shows some of our workers on the late shift when all three services were represented. Sorry Elfie, I didn't get you in this frame, so I owe you one.

6

On 14 October some of our ladies gathered at Gloria’s home for an enjoyable morning tea sans les garcon. I have been informed they had a good time, but as usual I can’t provide a report because I am not allowed to know anything other than they “had something really nice to eat and drink”. However; I did find this photo on Facebook.

October 25 was an overcast spring day: but very comfortable as our party of passionate punters arrived at Corbould Park (Sunshine Coast Races). It was our annual race day out and, as customary, track management looked after us. We had our usual private enclosure in the Members’ area, and appreciated the indulgence buffet.

Monty always enjoys this particular outing, so we were especially pleased to see our good mate join us once again. I have featured two photos of our propitious punters enjoying the day out.

7

On 22 November we gather at the Sandstone Point Hotel for a luncheon date. Note the change from previously advised 15 October. The Beach Boys will be there on the 15th and the hotel couldn’t fit us in. Our good vibrations will have to wait a week.

If you haven’t been there, Sandstone Point is located on the mainland side of the Bribie Island Bridge, on the right as you approach from the highway. Some may know the place as Toorbul Point. Did you know the area was the site of an allied amphibious training base during WW2? In order to carry out General MacArthur's plans for Allied amphibious advance from New Guinea to the Philippines, Australian and US forces required training in this type of beach landing. A Combined Training Centre (CTC) was established at Toorbul Point in mid 1942 to train army and navy units. The camp had jetties, slipway, mock ships, workshops, lecture rooms, messes, accommodation and camp sites set out along the shoreline on either side of today's bridge to Bribie Island. After boarding vessels at Toorbul Point, practice landings of men and vehicles were carried out on the beaches of Bribie Island. Some traces of the internal CTC road remain southeast of the bridge, but it is bad luck if you want to explore the area because very little remains of the CTC today.

And while I am mentioning social events, I have some important dates for your diary. You can appreciate that December will be a busy period for us. Our Christmas Party will be on Friday 4th; our General Meeting will be on Monday 7th; our Christmas BBQ will be on Friday 11th; we have a sausage sizzle on Monday 14th; and of course we will be doing our usual Wednesday night raffles. Then some of us will be having a little rest (we hope).

8

You will recall reading in one of my previous reports about a campaign underway to restore fair indexation to the DVA above General Rate disability pension, I also mentioned a petition on Change.org on this matter, and have since been asked by State Office to bring the petition to your attention, and ask you to sign it. So here I go.

If you want to look at the petition, go on the Internet and go to the TPI Federation website (http://www.tpifed.org.au) where you will see a link to the petition. Or you can go direct to the Change.org website and search for “Fair Compensation for our Most Disabled Veterans”. The last time I looked there were over 3,750 supporters, with support growing, but very slowly. From what I can determine, and leaving out the politics, the case for the petition can be summarised as follows: • TPI (Special Rate) is compensation; it is NOT welfare.

• The DVA General Rate is compensation taking into account medical impairment

and lifestyle effects of an injury or illness due to service (pain and suffering). • TPI includes a portion above the General Rate to account for economic loss – in

other words an income replacement component. • The Above General Rate or income replacement component has slipped from

about 80% of the Average Minimum Wage in 1951-52 to about 64% in 2014-15. • TPI Federation is requesting that the Above General Rate component be

adjusted to at least 100% the tax-adjusted Average Minimum Wage. • TPI Federation is not asking the Federal Government to change legislation. TPI

Federation suggests that this requested change would only involve a structural change in how the Above General Rate component was related to the Average Minimum Wage as a measured index for the income replacement component of the TPI compensation payment.

This issue is relevant for TPIs. Apparently many young veterans these days are opting for a lump sum, and so this issue will not effect them. But it will affect younger veterans who opt for a Special Rate disability pension. They must be fairly compensated for loss of earnings over what could turn out to be a long period of time. The compensation component of Special Rate for their loss of earnings should be at least the equivalent of 100% of the average minimum age. I advised you previously that TPI Federation and some other ESOs had jointly written to the Prime Minister, but had received a less than satisfactory response. In George Robinson’s report (read the next item – TPI Federation Directors) it is now obvious that both the government (LNP) and the opposition (ALP) are against the proposal – perhaps, I suspect, because of the cost more than anything else. My personal inclination is to support the petition, but have a look at it and make up our own mind.

9

Did you realise our Redcliffe Sub-branch currently provides the TPI State Treasurer (George Mialkowski) and State Secretary (George Robinson)? George Robinson now wears an additional hat; along with Ken Savage (TPI State President) - George is a Director of our TPI National Federation.

The Board of Directors of the TPI Federation consists of 14 directors as follows:

• 2 Directors from NSW; • 2 Directors from VIC; • 2 Directors from QLD; • 2 Directors from SA; • 2 Directors from WA; • 2 Directors from TAS; • 1 Director from NT; and • 1 Director from ACT.

George recently returned from a meeting of Directors and was kind enough to give me a short written briefing from the meeting. With George’s permission the brief has been included in this Commscord. Thanks mate, much appreciated.

November 11 is of course Remembrance Day, and from a Facebook Overwatch page I belong to I can inform you about a Veteran Suicide Awareness event taking place in Canberra on hat day. The organisers are John and Naomi Enchong and they have the support of the ACT Sub-Branch of the RSL.

The Canberra event will honour those who have fallen to invisible wounds; and is a remembrance not a protest. There will be a black cross and three pairs of boots representing Army, Navy and Air Force. An RSL Poppy Service will be conducted at 0800 including the laying of poppies to honour those who have succumbed to PTSD, and to show solidarity with those left behind. 8am has been chosen so as not to compete with the 11am ceremony, and they have permission to use the parliamentary assembly area, so it will probably be on the news.

And that leads me into the next item. Exercise Stone Pillow 2015 was held on the evening of 17-18 October. Participants spent the night roughing it in an effort to approximate the conditions of homeless veterans. There are some great photos on the Stone Pillow Facebook page including some good ones of supporters Dan Keighran VC, Ben Roberts VC, and a host of supporting organizations. Well done that crew, and it is fantastic to see this ground swell of support emerging for Aussie homeless veterans.

Did you know that the original Stone Pillow story was a 1985 television movie starring Lucille Ball portraying an older homeless woman?

10

I have mentioned in a previous report a Facebook Overwatch page to which I belong, and how the Overwatch groups can assist ex-servicemen and women. I am a strong believer in the Overwatch system, and have cited a couple of examples in a previous report. Here is another example which typifies the frustration many Vietnam veterans have felt with DVA, and which many of today’s younger veterans feel. In March last year, a veteran sent a desperate email to DVA;

“Thanks DVA. Am done. Talk to you in the next life. You say I have 0% depression. i’ll show you.” Alarm bells rang and thanks to RAR Overwatch the man was tracked to his home and a veteran dispatched to talk him down. His family and the police were also notified and he was prevented from joining the growing list of veteran suicides. How did the Overwatch system in Australia come about? Well, the following passage from Marc Kirwin sums it up pretty well [anything in these parameters is my insertion]:

“Letme introducemyself. My name isMarcKirwan, I served from1986 to1994with2nd/4thBattalion,TheRoyalAustralianRegiment. IamalsotheNationalCoordinatorofOVERWATCHAUSTRALIA.TheprimaryMissionofOVERWATCHAUSTRALIAistoprovidefirstresponseactiontoanyexmemberoftheADFincrisis.To facilitate that mission we have established multiple Service/CorpsFacebookpagessowecantrytogetpeerresponsestopeers. 11

Before I go I must let you know that I had a small problem at the Sunshine Coast races this month. The horse I backed in one race came in so late I asked the jockey to show me his diary of the trip. I then spoke to the owner who told me the last time he took this horse to the vet he asked the vet If he would be able to race the horse again. The vet replied: “Of course you can, and you will probably beat it”. Feeling a more than a bit frustrated, I asked a passing punter: “How can I make a small fortune at this track?” She replied: “Start with a large one”. Never mind, as usual we all had a good time and there were a few winners within our group.

Snakes alive, I almost forgot! If you need help with slithering serpents, then Pete the Snake Catcher is available to assist. Pete has been very busy lately (check his Facebook page) and has agreed to provide a service to Redcliffe TPI members for free - thanks mate. Pete can be contacted on the mobile number shown in the picture at left, and a fridge magnet is available on request.

And finally, come along and join with us at our 2015 AGM to be held concurrently with our November monthly meeting on 2nd November.

Do you recall last month I mentioned that we will have a group photo taken at our AGM? If you have a TPI

polo shirt, please wear it on the day. If you don’t have one, you can get one from Quartermaster Bill who took orders for 9 polo shirts at our October meeting. To make it a great week, make sure you follow up by coming along to our Jamieson Park BBQ on 6 November. And remember, It’s better to look back on life and say: “I can’t believe I did that”, than to look back and say: “I wish I did that”. Cheers everyone, and take care.

TPI FEDERATION CONFERENCE SEPTEMBER 2015 QLD DIRECTORS

REPORT

A new TPI Federation President: A recently held election for TPI President resulted in Ms Pat

McCabe being the first successful female candidate to be elected to the position.

Previously Pat was the Federation Vice-President and prior to that she was President for the ACT-

TPI. Pat is based in Canberra and brings to the position many years of experience in dealing with

matters that concern TPI's, where she is well known and respected both DVA and Federal Politicians.

The Directors elected John Reeves (TPI-TAS) to replace Pat as the Federation Vice President.

Pat thanked the outgoing President (Mr Tony Mogeridge} for his support and commitment to the

Federation and the members.

Pat then explained how she would like to see the Federation progress in the future, with an emphasis

on the use of modern technology to communicate and attract younger veterans to the organization.

She outlined the need for 100% commitment by all Directors to any future proposals and for State

Associations to be proactive in looking after members and their entitlements.

Media Sub Committee Report: The sub-committee has worked to develop and release a media

program that explains to the public why we are pressing the Government to review the Special Rate

compensation so that it reflects a similar dollar value to the average wage. The Federation is aware

that this project may involve a long' term commitment, however it is far too important to ignore.

Directors approved for the sub-committee to continue its work and required it to report back at the

March 2016 meeting. George Robinson Qld Director was added as a member to the Sub Committee.

Hospital Television Hire: DVA will pay for the hire of a television set when a member is hospitalized.

Senator Lambie: The Senator strongly supports the veteran community and believes that the

Government is not doing enough for veterans and their families. She was particularly critical of the

Government's lack of support for those who are injured in service. She is aware of the current

Federation submission and is a strong supporter.

David Feeney (Labour), Shadow Minister for Veterans Affairs: The Shadow Minister outlined the

opposition’s position on veteran’s matters, during which it became quite clear that they do not support

any change in relation to the TPI Special Rate.

Federation Petition: The Federation has a petition asking the Prime Minister to restore the economic

loss component of the Veteran's Special Rate (SR) and TPI compensation payments to 100% of the

minimum wage. All directors agreed to support the petition. Members are requested to add their name

to the petition. See http://qldtpi.org.au/fair-compensation-petition/.

THE ROYAL NAVY’S NEW £1 BILLION SUPER SUB:

Deadly Hunter Killer submarine is capable of hearing a ship leaving port in New York while sitting

underwater in the English Channel.

· Powerful nuclear reactor allows her to cruise non-stop for 25 years.

· One of the world’s most sophisticated and powerful nuclear submarines.

· Her sonar can detect vessels moving on the other side of the ocean: so sensitive it can hear

other vessels 3,000 miles away.

· She carries a giant payload of 38 deadly Tomahawk cruise missiles, capable of hitting targets

1,200 miles away.

HMS Ambush, which was built by BAE Systems, is believed

to be the world’s most powerful nuclear attack

submarine. Her huge weapons payload includes super-

accurate Tomahawk cruise missiles and Spearfish

torpedoes for fighting other vessels.

A cross-section of the sub shows the complexity of her design and the need to fit as much

technology in as possible. Her crew instead using a digital camera system to see above the surface

when she is submerged.

Built by BAE Systems, she has enough nuclear fuel for cruising for up to 25 years non-stop—giving

her huge tactical flexibility. Her nuclear reactor is so powerful her range is really limited by only the

need for maintenance and resupply.

The super hi-tech vessel has undergone rigorous testing ahead of today’s launch. Her listening ability

is quite awesome, having a sonar system with the processing power of 2,000 laptop computers. HMS

Ambush was fitted out with her sophisticated technology at Devonshire dock hall in Barrow-in-

Furness Cumbria. She contains some of the most hi-tech weapons and sonar systems ever created.

Foreign forces will find it almost impossible to sneak up undetected by her incredibly powerful sonar

equipment that can hear halfway around the world.

18

Astute-class submarines are the largest, most advanced and most powerful in the history of the

Royal Navy, boasting world-class design, weaponry and versatility. They can travel over 500 miles in

a day, allowing them to be deployed anywhere in the world within two weeks. The vessel is also one

of the quietest sea-going vessels built, capable of sneaking along an enemy coastline to drop off

Special Forces or tracking a boat for weeks.

Her Tomahawk missiles are capable of hitting targets up to 1,200 miles away—making her a vital

weapon for Britain’s armed forces. The sub’s commander Peter Green, 47, said the vessel's

capabilities are 'unparalleled. This sub is a huge step forward in underwater operations,' he told the

Daily Mirror <http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/inside-super-submarine-ambush-ahead-

1323450> .

The weapons room of the £1 billion sub. Many details

of her weapons system remain top secret.

The submarine’s galley will be staffed by five

chefs, providing food 24-hours/day for her

officers and crew.

Technology: Leading engineering

technician Andrew Gee tests out the sub's

steering system in the control room.

‘It is possible this class of submarine is the

most advanced in the world.' Another

Astute Class sub is currently

undergoing sea trials and could be

operational within a year.

Most of her 103-strong crew live in bunk-

beds measuring two metres by one metre,

with up to 18 submariners sharing one

room.
