WHITE’S MERCANTILE

WHAT: Grand Opening of White's Mercantile Louisville WHEN: Early Spring 2019

Stop by and shop at White's Mercantile, a general store for the modern day tastemaker. Founder Holly Williams named the store after her maternal grandparents and drew inspiration from the mercantile that her great-grandfather once owned in the small town of Mer Rouge, Louisiana. She opened her first White's Mercantile in December of 2013 and has been going strong in the 12 south neighborhood in Nashville, TN. This pet friendly shop is now in our very own NULU with a local co-owner who is super passionate about bringing the White's brand to this community. White's Mercantile is the perfect place for your everyday and must have buys. We have something for everyone! We can't wait to see you. ▪

JOYCE GARNER “LAZY SUSAN” AT GARNER NARATIVE March 31-June 28 | First Friday reception April 5, 6-9pm I paint as I live but not what I live. My hope is there is room in each painting for a connection to flicker between us. These paintings are not supposed to be just my story but stories I see all around me. Joyce Garner's newest works can be understood as a sustained and deliber-ately undirected investigation into life however it shows up. Loss, joy, child-hood, politics, family, addiction, celebration, aging, renewal—these things all at once, on painterly canvases as large as the themes. artist statement: These are what I painted in the last 2 years in my studio at 217 South Clay Street, Louisville Kentucky 40202. lazy susan | sugar high, sugar low | perspective | musical chairs | proper footwear

lazy susan has a dis-guised artist figure—the disguise is the stock-ings, heels and gloves— sitting on a lazy susan on top of a table. She slowly turns and looks out in all directions, thinking let me see, just wait a minute. The hares hold the leash on the hound. In 2019 Pinnochio is growing his nose. There are worry beads when needed.

GREEN BUILDING SOLD Augusta and Gill Holland closed on Friday on the sale of their flagship NuLu property The Green Building and its parking lot, almost 13 years to the day after purchasing it from Cleve Gatchel. Gill says: "We are so proud to have helped jump start the NuLu revitalization with the renovation of this historic 120 year old building, embracing a message of preservation, sustainability, inclusion, arts and cultural impact, the start-up and tech scene, and of course local food and drink.”

The Green Building opened in the fall of 2008 and from the first year when they offered free event space for any non profit that wanted to throw fundraisers or parties there, to opening one of Louisville’s first true cocktail bars at "732 Social" to the ground-breaking art shows at "The Green Building Gallery", The Green Building went on to become Ky’s first LEED Platinum Adaptive Re-use Building KY and KY’s “greenest" commercial structure. With geothermal wells, 81 solar panels, recycled bule jean denim insulation, the building remains a model for the state in terms of local self-sufficiency and still attracts visitors and tourists. The leases for Galaxie / OuterSpace and Edj Analytics remain in place. January 6, 2012, they unveiled the first Bourbon Trail Sculpture by Jake Heustis, an early public art branding effort. Three years ago, the city’s first public EV charging station was installed there. Acquiring principal Kaveh Zamanian says "I have exciting plans that would build on what Gill and Augusta started and help further elevate the neighborhood”. Gallery NuLu opened 12 years ago this month at 632 East Market, which served as their business office while The Green Building was being renovated, and while the name “NuLu" started getting used in the fall of 2007 it wasn't officially adopted by the neighborhood association until about three years later. ▪

ROXYNELL CLOTHING CO. RoxyNell Clothing Co. is a custom Blue Jean Experience. We pride ourselves on having the highest quality denim, sourced from denim companies here in the US, with the best craftsmanship for an authentic custom fit. The name is a tribute to my Grandmother, Roxy Saterly or Nell as she was known to most. She made her own clothes and I spent many days with her as a young girl learning from her about the newest trends in fashion. Believe it or not, there is rich history in Kentucky and even Louisville when it comes to Blue Jeans. Back in the late 1880’s with the U.S. popularity of Kentucky Jeans, it was stated that “Louisville may justly

claim to be the headquarters of the jeans industry.” (Worlds Congress of Bankers and Financiers; Chicago Rand, McNally & Co Publishers 1893) The manufacturing industry in Louisville consisted of over five factories with more than 1500 looms that made over 12 thousand pieces per month. This booming industry brought in more than $2,000,000 in revenue to Louisville per year! Another interesting tidbit in blue jean history: Before he moved to San Francisco, Levi Strauss lived and worked for 5 years in his brother’s soft goods store in Louisville KY where they sold Kentucky Jeans. Our NULU location will offer ready-made or “off the rack” jeans complete with one free alteration or, if you feel like treating yourself, schedule a private consultation for your 12 point measurement session and have custom made jeans that will be designed and made to fit just for you! As a thank you, mention this newsletter and receive 10% off your first pair of custom made jeans. Or visit our website at roxynell.com for more information. ▪
