Red Tape Challenge’ A summary of changes to the Code of Practice for Chimes in England. These changes will not be put in place until autumn 2013 as the summary of changes needs to go before parliament. SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE CODE Current Provision - Do not sound chimes for longer than 4 seconds at a time. Change - Do not sound chimes for longer than 12 seconds at a time. Current Provision - Do not sound chimes more often than once every 3 minutes. Change - Do not sound chimes more often than once every 2 minutes. RED TAPE CHALLENGE RESULTS OFTHE ICA’S Current Provision – Do not sound chimes when the vehicle is stationary. Change Do not sound chime more than once when the vehicle is stationary at a selling point. Current Provision – Do not sound chimes except on approach to a selling point. Change – Do not sound chimes except on approach to or at a selling point. Current Provision – Do not sound chimes when in sight of another vehicle which is trading. No change. Current Provision Do not sound chimes when within 50 metres of schools (during school hours), hospitals, and places of worship (on Sundays and other recognised day of worship). No change. Current Provision Do not sound chimes more often than once every 2 hours in the same length of street. No change. Current Provision Do not sound chimes louder than 80 dB(A) at 7.5 metres. No change. Current Provision Do not sound chimes as loudly in quiet areas or narrow streets as elsewhere. Change Do not sound chimes as loudly in areas of low background noise or narrow streets as elsewhere. Current Provision (In Control Of Pollution Act 1974, not in Code of Practice) It is an offence to sound your chimes before 12:00 noon or after 7:00pm. No change.
