TRUE STORIES

Bruce ReynoldsThe year was 1976. Richard Sullivan, Sr., account

guy, and Bruce Reynolds, art director, met in the

smoky Billiards Room at the Athelstan Club, and

a new advertising agency was born. With a new

mouth to feed (Rich) and $7,000 in his pocket,

Richard gave his employer the middle finger and

partnered with Bruce to form Reynolds-Sullivan

Advertising with Fact-O-Bake as their lone client.

Bruce Reynolds was an amazing art director and

a whole lot of fun to be around—he loved both

food and beverage. Sadly, the beverage got in

the way of the business, and Richard and Bruce

parted ways. The beverage also affected Bruce in

other ways, and eventually he died of cirrhosis of

the liver.

Mike JackMichael Collins started working at Red Square as

the runner in 2008. One day, Richard asked him

if he ever wanted to be named anything other

than his given name to which Mike responded,

“I always wanted to be named Jack.” From that

day on, Richard (and everyone else) called him

Mike Jack. During the time he worked at Red

Square, he dabbled in a little copywriting, dressed

in a haz-mat suit for a photo shoot and wore

Blake Sullivan Herndon’s shorts during the office

olympics. But he was best known for drinking and

using recreational drugs, and after getting a DUI,

is the only runner in the history of Red Square

runners to have a driver. Mike Jack eventually

moved to Los Angeles to go to film school and

tend 200 acres of strawberry fields he inherited

from his grandfather.

14

Page 17: Red Square Yearbook 2013

TRUE STORIES

Bonnie BishopAsk Richard about Bonnie, and he will first tell

you she had really bad teeth. Then he’ll tell you

that she didn’t wear a bra, but of those two dis-

tractions, her poor orthodonture got his attention

every time she opened her mouth to speak—

which was often because she was a secretary at

Reynolds-Sullivan. Richard, who has never been

one to hold back, offered to pay for Bonnie to get

braces. Little by little, she paid him back, and little

by little, her teeth straightened up. Shortly after

the braces came off, Bonnie met a man, got

married and left Reynolds-Sullivan. We’re still

not sure whether she wears a bra now.

Brian JenkinsBrian Jenkins, former creative director at Sullivan-

St. Clair, was a bit cagey and never wanted to

have his picture taken. Now we know why. His

tenure at Sullivan-St. Clair was cut short when he

took advantage of a co-worker’s identity. Brian

applied for a loan using Jennifer Jenkins as the

co-signer. Note that Jennifer’s husband’s name is

Jerry, and no one is really sure if Brian even had a

wife. In fact, Brian and Jennifer were not related

at all. Once the jig was up, Brian took his taxider-

mied alligator and automatic rifles and left Mobile

under the cover of darkness. He’s has been on the

lam ever since.

Jennifer JenkinsAffectionately known as JJ, Jennifer Jenkins did

two stints in Public Relations for Sullivan-St. Clair/

Red Square, leaving in between to have babies.

Barefoot, she was about 5 feet tall but always

wore high heels to compensate. She is tiny—her

thigh is smaller than Matt Whitfield’s bicep. What

she lacks in stature, she makes up for in per-

sonality and is quick to tell you that she is from

Fayette, Alabama, and was a majorette at The

University of Alabama. She owns the statement,

“Dad gum, y’all, I’ve gotta pee,” and was known

to have urinated in a cup on a six-seater Cessna

en route from a new business pitch because she

couldn’t wait until the plane landed.

Frappe 2012JUNE 1, 2012

Frappe 2012 started out with bloody marys and

mimosas under threatening skies, but a few

raindrops weren’t enough to dampen spirits.

Anyway, once Diana employed her weather

superpowers, the rest of the day was nothing

but blue skies and bushwackers.

RSQ EVENTS

Page 20: Red Square Yearbook 2013

RSQ EVENTS

RSQ Night at The Hank JULY 31, 2012

The weather held out long enough to allow the

BayBears to play a make-up game from July 30

and give RSQ spectators a double-header treat.

While Nick’s moment of glory (throwing out the

first pitch) was delayed, everyone enjoyed hot

dogs, hamburgers, cold beer and popcorn

while socializing and watching the first game

go into extra innings. The only thing missing

was apple pie.

David Shing RED TUESDAY | SEPTEMBER 11, 2012

AOL’s Digital Prophet David Shing joined us last

month for Red Tuesday, and while he shared a

vast knowledge of all things digital, he also proved

to know little about geography. Nevertheless, he

was extremely entertaining, and the event, held at

Space 301, was well attended by employees, clients

and friends.

18

Documentary Screening RED TUESDAY | DECEMBER 4, 2012

Red Square gathered again at Space 301 for a

screening of the film, “From Nothing, Something:

A Documentary on the Creative Process.” The

film’s director Tim Cawley was on hand to give an

introduction, and employees, clients and friends

joined us for catered lunch and the screening.

Halloween OCTOBER 31, 2012

While not a sanctioned RSQ event, the day was

eventful nevertheless as several employees wore

their Halloween costumes to work. But none wore it

as well as Chrissy. Her costume consisted of a mask

and a little fake blood, but she managed to scare

the bejeezus out of all of us. At least we think it was

Chrissy and that the blood was fake. Yes, Creepy

Chrissy takes the prize this Halloween.

RSQ Holiday Street Party DECEMBER 14, 2012

While there was no official poll taken, the general

consensus is that this year’s Red Square Agency

Christmas party was the best yet. The food, catered

by Bay Gourmet, was fantastic, and the photo

booth was a blast. Super T was an awesome dance

band, and DJ Trey Stein did not disappoint with his

spinning vinyl—until he quit playing at the appointed

hour. So the Party Planning Committee (PPC) took

some notes for next year: we need to extend the

party’s end time to 1 or 2 a.m.; we need to make

sure there’s plenty of Heineken; and we need to

remember to order dessert.

20

Page 23: Red Square Yearbook 2013

RSQ EVENTS

#MardiRouge FEBRUARY 8, 2013

RSQ’s Mardi Gras Frappe took to the garage this year with

a “very hipster Brooklyn warehouse” feel. The Excelsior

Band kicked off the party while guests enjoyed cocktails,

Foo fingers and Dew Drop hot dogs and hamburgers. The

Crewe of Columbus put on a great parade, and DJ Trey

Stein followed up with dance music for all to enjoy.

RSQ EVENTS

Tres de Mayo MAY 3, 2013

As the name implies, RSQ’s annual observance

of Cinco de Mayo fell on the Friday closest to the

holiday which was May 3. The pre-party started

early in the day with sombrero and moustache

photo ops, Later in the day, beverages were in

plentiful supply, and food was provided by a few

employees and Cruisin Taco. Two piñata’s and

Pandora provided entertainment, and everyone

walked away with an appreciation for our friends

south of the border. Special shout out to Whitney

Hill for blending up the amazing margaritas!

RSQ EVENTS

Amos Kennedy RED TUESDAY | MAY 7, 2013

Amos Kennedy and his traveling letterpress joined us for

Red Tuesday in May. He owns and operates Kennedy Prints!

now based in Detroit. Their tagline: “We are on the cutting

edge of 19th Century Technology.” He talked about his craft

and then demonstrated his printing technique, allowing

employees to pull their own prints. Everyone walked away

with a poster and a love for letterpress.

Habitat for Humanity MAY 4, 2013

Red Square participated in a community service event to

support Habitat for Humanity and a needy family. Several

employees gave up their Saturday to lay tile, hardwood

flooring and more. Creative talents were put to use for a

good cause.

Azalea Trail RunPictured here is the dream team who brought home third place

in the small corporate teams division: Shar’Day, Christina O.,

Ryder, Jarrett, Jarrod, Kate L. and Diana. Not pictured: Josh

Color RunWhat do you get when you combine a 5K run and

the 1980s? You get Color Me Rad, a run where

people are pelted with packets of pastel-colored

dust and buckets of dyed water. A colorful group of

RSQ peeps managed to rise from the psychedelic

ashes of the finish line to take this totally awesome

picture. Featured in front, from left: Brittney,

Melissa, Ashley Rowe, Courtney, Caroline. Back

row: CRowe, Corey, Melissa’s friend Dan, Ryan and

Chrissy. Not pictured, but rumored to have gone

rad, are Jackie, Henry, Shar’Day and Whitney C.

Kick BallPlagued by far too many late game times, teams that take

a child’s game too seriously and poor weather, those who

devoted their Thursday nights to drinking, kicking and drinking

are happy to see this particular season go. On a positive note,

Sarah G.’s Daphne team took the league title, and Corey

definitely rocked the jorts. Participation awards go to Corey,

Alex, Nick, Ryder, Willie, Chrissy, Sarah G. and Melissa.

D O N E I N 6 0 S E C O N D SNo, we’re not describing an overexcited teenager’s sexual performance. We’re talking about your

ability to continually perform miracles with insane timelines. Take this ad for your yearbook. We sent

Blue in BiloxiAdvertising/PR Manager for local casino looking for someone to clutter up bill-boards with. Must have thick skin and the ability to roll with the punches (literally). Must be easy going to complement a “passionate” personality with no filter that will verbally castrate you on a whim. Cou-rageous parties who are in-terested must also be open-minded enough to know that she is always right and you are always wrong. InDesign skills a plus.

No proofreaders were harmed in the making of this

yearbook. In fact, no proofreaders even saw it because

the more eyes that saw it, the less fun it would be.

Sincerest apologies from the yearbook staff to the

QA team for any mistakes you might have found.
