• “Reds” was a name they used to call communists.

• Occurred during the Cold War.• People destroying the country were American

communists and citizens assisting communists.

Accusations During the Red Scare

• Many people were suspected of being communists.

• Investigated the government, educational systems and entertainment industry.

• Intellectuals were suspected.

McCarthyism

• McCarthyism was a second Red Scare.• Occurred during the 1940s and 1950s.• Joseph McCarty made an accusation that

there were communists in the United States.

Accusations During McCarthyism

• People who were suspected were mostly writers and entertainers.

• Consequences of accused communists.• Unable to continue working.• Got passports taken away.• Jailed.• The trials were publicized.• Political tensions were heigtened.
