Note from Teacher Advisor:

Ms. Tan Consilz,

Lecturer-Business Programme,

Founder and Advisor for

KDU-Murdoch Commerce Society.

By forming Murdoch Commerce Society and with its existence, I

have the opportunity to work closely with the students in

numerous occasions. The objective of the Society is to initiating

student activities, inspiring and encouraging students to become

future leaders.

I hope students can develop their personal skills (i.e.

communication skills, team building, social interaction, etc.)

through organizing variant types of self-enhancement courses

and activities. I always believe that the students will be able to

excel in either their studies or future career with an earlier

preparation, which is starting from now. Of course, the Society

can help representing students’ interest and empowering

students to pursue their passions.

When looking back to the activities that we have

organized together, I think I have learnt a lot, as well as the

students. I always wanted to inspire them, and in fact, they have

inspired me too. I will take this as OUR learning experience, so

let’s move forward together.

Thanks to all of my Teammates! Bravo!

Young Entrepreneur Series (YES) Talk-

Social Entrepreneurship & Motivation

Reported by Ian Fan

Checked & Edited by Jin Chieh

March 7, 2012

Young Entrepreneurs Series (YES) talk was a series of inspiring and

motivational talk for students. For this time talk, it is about one young

man’s journey in social entrepreneurship. This young man is Mr.

Brian Lee, who hails from Victoria University, Australia and works

for many Non-Government Organizations (NGOs).

Mr. Brian opened the event at 12pm with a short Q&A session to with

the audience. He interacted with the audience, asking them about their

interests and ambitions. Then Mr. Brian gave a brief introduction of

himself, his achievements, and his works. Next, the audiences were

treated to a personality test. The test was interesting as it identified the individuals’ personalities,

and related it to certain animal characteristics. One was either a natural leader (lion), discipline

player (zebra), flexible doer (buffalo), or spontaneous opportunities (hyena).

Moving on, Mr. Brian gave a motivational talk about success, touching on the meaning and

methods to achieve success. He gave the audience 7 pointers for success. In summary, success

begins with the person’s acknowledgement for change, then identifying his or her strengths and

weaknesses, having faith in his or her actions, and striving towards success.

Then, Mr. Brian gave a walk-through of his NGOs career. He shared about his community and

social works, locally and globally. Mr. Brian illustrated the walk-through with a visual

presentation; highlighting and explaining the various events in his journey as a social entrepreneur.

Finally, the Young Entrepreneurs Series (YES) talk came to a close at about 2pm. Overall, the

response was good, with an estimated number of 40 people attending the talk.

The talk was motivating to a certain extent where it encourages students to work for what they

would want to achieve in their lives. The talk does not help the students as to how they should

achieve what they want to pursue but it managed to convey the message that everyone can have

accomplishment if they believe that they are able to achieve it. The talk sets a clear "mind map"

as to where the students can identify which level to achievement they are situated at the current

phase of their studies or lives, and subsequently enabling the students to really think thoroughly

their respective progressions.

Ian Fan

Mr. Brian was indeed an inspirational and motivational speaker. He taught us the meaning of

success. He also gave us some guides and pointers as to how we can achieve success. Through

this meeting, I learned that success begins within oneself. We have to identify our personality

traits and constantly motivate ourselves towards success.

As a friend of Mr. Brian, I really inspired by what he is doing in his career and his heart for the

community. Success of a man is not valued by how much money someone has but the positive

impact of that person to the society. As well, Mr. Brian is passionate to share his life with

students and I believe through this sharing session, many lives have been impacted and students

will start to live differently in the way that comes with positive thinking, be responsible and act in

love in every phase of their lives. A new meaning of Success is being defined through this talk.

What is Social Entrepreneur?

Social entrepreneurship is the work of social entrepreneurs. A social entrepreneur

recognizes a social problem and uses entrepreneurial principles to organize,

create and manage a venture to achieve social change (a social venture). While a

business entrepreneur typically measures performance in profit and return, a

social entrepreneur focuses on creating social capital. Thus, the main aim of

social entrepreneurship is to further social and environmental goals. Social

entrepreneurs are most commonly associated with the voluntary and not-for-

profit sectors, but this need not preclude making a profit. Social entrepreneurship

practiced with a world view or international context is called international social

entrepreneurship.

LOVE is a VERB – Feeding the Homeless

Project Reported By Ian Fan

Checked & Edited by Jin Chieh

March 23, 2012

Murdoch Commerce Society (MCS) organized this occasion to give its members an experience of

what it’s like to be part of a community project. Through this initiative, MCS members joined

others in a quest to give something back to society. This was an opportunity for us, the blessed

and privileged, to serve the under-privileged. Though we may be limited in our resources, but all

that was needed was an initiative and someone to lend a helping hand. Lend a helping hand we

did; helping to distribute food and drinks to the poor and needy.

A total of 11 Murdoch students, 4 girls and 7 guys, took part in this event. We were very

privileged to have Ridzwan Razalee, the president of KDU’s Student Union, and Mr. David Lee,

Senior Executive of KDU Student Service Centre (KDU S.13 Campus) as our guides for the night.

Page 18: RED issue 2

P a g e | 18

KDU-MURDOCH COMMERCE SOCIETY (KDU-MCS) RED ISSUE 2

Ridzwan has the experience and knowledge, constantly guiding us through the night. As a group,

we followed Pertiwi, an NGO, in its mission to contribute to the homeless.

We left KDU University College Damansara Jaya Campus at 8pm, stopping first at Bangsar for

briefing. There, Ridzwan briefed us on the procedures and processes. Things such as where the

food and drinks were stationed, and how we should distribute the meals, were explained to us.

The food and drinks were not only important, but also the people. The service of the people was

vital. It can be something as small as a smile, but it leaves a big impression, sending a pleasant

and sincere message to the other person. This is to show that we care, and it’s coming from our

heart with care and love.

We reached our first stop at about 9.30pm. When we arrived, already present were a crowd of

people queuing up for the food. Slowly and cautiously, we made our way to the front, where the

van, carrying the food and drinks, was located. The girls joined the other female volunteers to

help distribute the food and water to the people. While we guys were there to assist and provide

security. Though it didn’t really seem like a big role or essential, but it was. Our presence as

security provided a sense of security and safety. We men were there to ensure that everything runs

smoothly without any disruptions and disturbances.

Page 19: RED issue 2

Then, at about 10pm we adjourned to our next stop, Kota Raya. A similar scene occurred; people

came to queue for the food and drinks. However, this time the crowd was more than at the

previous stop. Again, the girls distributed the food, while some of the guys gave the drinks. Then,

at about 10.45pm we left to our third stop - Masjid India.

At Masjid India, there were a handful of people who came for the food and drinks. Hence, our

help was not really needed at that time. There, we called it a night.

“I have come to the conclusion that charity is only charity when you give money,

services or food without personal gain, benefit or recognition of any kind. Real

charity is anonymous. It starts and ends within you.” – Mohd Syafiq

What they have to say about their experience?

Amanda Lim

I feel happy to be able to join this event, to do charity work for the poor. It is a great experience to

be able to see how these poor people survive, and to be a part of Pertiwi to help them. It was my

first time seeing many people queuing and lining up for food and drinks patiently. I learned that

these poor people must line up in the following order; whereby ladies first, followed by men

below 60’s, and then men below 50’s. Based on what I have seen with my own eyes, I learned

that we must appreciate whatever we have now, and giving a genuine smile to these poor people

is a great thing to do. If it is possible, we should do more charity work to help those less fortunate.

Moreover, my other experience is that people are willing to help one another even though they are

of different race and culture.

Roshan Panditji

First and foremost, I arrive at the college with no expectation at all. The question on my mind and

I guess everyone else’s mind was where the food we were to distribute was. To my amazement it

was a whole van full of nasi lemak (Malaysia Traditional Food), tea, coffee, mineral water and

juices. When we arrived at our first destination, I was amazed at the organization skills of all the

volunteers. Everything was done systematically and orderly. The task I had to carry out was

crowd control. I have to admit that I was quite nervous at first, but as the evening progressed, I

felt more and more comfortable. Overall, it was a fun and great experience, and it made me

appreciate and realize that how fortunate we all are. Last but not the least, I would like to thank all

who were involved, it really was an inspirational humanitarian work being done. We all can make

our society great by playing these little parts

Yasutaa Manogaran

The event of feeding the homeless people was indeed an eye opener for me. I felt so touched to

see that there are people out there still surviving without the basic necessities of life, and yet they

are not complaining about it. They keep surviving till they can. I realize how lucky and blessed I

am, as God has given me everything in life. I also learned my lesson, that there is no obstacle we

cannot overcome if we believe in ourselves.

Ian Fan

I know that there are poor, unfortunate, and homeless people in this world. I know that such

people live within our midst; eating, sleeping, and going through life like any other ordinary

person. But tonight, this event opened my eyes and mind to see the reality of life. I am grateful,

thankful, and blessed for my family, friends, environment, and quality of life. Also, I have come

to realize that I do not need to do something extraordinary or big for a better tomorrow. Instead, it

can be as simple as a smile, and giving out food and drinks to the needy.

When I came across with the idea of bringing students for community project, I have no faith at

all whether there were any students joining in for the project. It was the very 1st time after such a

while KDU student service finished their previous CSR event. I was told about this from Mr.

David, and to come with a team of 8 to 10 people to continue with this project. I had fear of

getting this number of students in a short period. Glad that I didn’t stop of doing it and when I

announced about doing this Feeding the homeless project, I received sufficient number of 11

students within half a day. And we carried out the event together. I received personally many

enquiries from students to have more of this kind of events and me and my Dream Team is

working in progress for the next event. Community project wasn’t sound new to me but Love is

just an ordinary word if we do not put it into practice. And I believe that to be an agent of LOVE

is our call in this world. (That’s why the last sentence of MCS’ mission statement is on LOVE

LIFE, LOVE PEOPLE.) Life will only be great and come with fulfillment when we are able to

bless and give. Remember: LOVE is a VERB!!
