Jesus offered hope, a living hope that even death cannot destroy. As we celebrate this profound event in salvation history, a question that is often asked (maybe, even by us) is: “Do I truly believe Jesus has conquered death and will never leave me? Christian author and apologist, Hank Hanegraaff, wrote an article entitled, “Jesus’ Resurrection: Miracle or Myth?” Hanegraaff writes: When I first began examining the evidences for Christianity, I discovered that belief in the Resurrection does not constitute a blind leap into a dark chasm but rather a step into the light. Indeed, the evidence for Christ’s resurrection is so overwhelming that no one can examine it with an open mind desiring to know the truth without becoming convinced of its truth…Of the many evidences available, none is more compelling than the fact that the resurrected Christ appeared to over five hundred individuals at a single time (1 Corinthians 15:6). Christ appeared to numerous other individuals as well, providing “many convincing proofs” of His resurrection (Acts 1:3). Christ in His resurrection body was even touched on two occasions (Matthew 28:9; John 20:17), and challenged the disciples (Luke 24:39) and Thomas (John 20:27) to feel His wounds. 1 Additionally, theologian and author, Dr. Michael Horton, notes two, key points about the historicity of Easter: The earliest Christians testified to the following elements of the resurrection claim, even to the point of martyrdom… 1. Jesus Christ lived, died, and was buried… Marcus Borg, co-founder of the skeptical “Jesus Seminar,” even concedes that Christ’s death by Roman crucifixion is “the most certain fact about the historical Jesus.” There are numerous attestations to these facts from ancient Jewish and Roman sources. According to the Babylonian Talmud, “Yeshua” was a false prophet hanged on Passover eve for sorcery and blasphemy. No less a towering Jewish scholar than Joseph Klausner identifies the following references to Jesus in the Talmud: Jesus was a rabbi whose mother, Mary (Miriam), was married to a carpenter who was nevertheless not the natural father of Jesus. Jesus went with his family to Egypt, returned to Judea and made disciples, performed miraculous signs by sorcery, led Israel astray, and was deserted at his trial without any defenders. On Passover eve he was crucified. 1 Hank Hanegraaff. “Jesus’ Resurrection: Miracle or Myth?” Chris- tian Research Institute.

A New DayThe season of Easter is upon us! The solemn days of Lent, a season that calls us to reflect upon the sinfulness and brokenness of our human condition, as well as the cost God Himself paid to get us back, leads us to the joy and victory of Easter. The death and resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of the Christian faith. This is what Paul is insisting when he writes:

Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised.16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. (1 Corinthians 15:12-19)

On the cross, Jesus Christ faced all the loneliness, pain, and fear that comes with sin and death and He conquered it! As we read the Easter story, as well as the post-Easter narratives, we see that Jesus did not disappear or abandon his disciples after the resurrection, but continued to live with them, teaching them about the new life to be lived in light of the resurrection. Jesus offered hope, a living hope that even death cannot destroy. As we celebrate this profound event in salvation history, a question that is often asked (maybe, even by us) is: “Do I truly believe Jesus has conquered death and will never leave me?

Christian author and apologist, Hank Hanegraaff, wrote an article entitled, “Jesus’ Resurrection: Miracle or Myth?” Hanegraaff writes:

When I first began examining the evidences for Christianity, I discovered that belief in the Resurrection

does not constitute a blind leap into a dark chasm but rather a step into the light. Christ in His resurrection body was even touched on two occasions (Matthew 28:9; John 20:17), and challenged the disciples (Luke 24:39) and Thomas (John 20:27) to feel His wounds.1

Additionally, theologian and author, Dr. Michael Horton, notes two, key points about the historicity of Easter:

The earliest Christians testified to the following elements of the resurrection claim, even to the point of martyrdom…

1. Jesus Christ lived, died, and was buried…Marcus Borg, co-founder of the skeptical “Jesus Seminar,” even concedes that Christ’s death by Roman crucifixion is “the most certain fact about the historical Jesus.” There are numerous attestations to these facts from ancient Jewish and Roman sources.

Red Hill Lutheran ChurchDiscipleship and Spiritual Growth Assessment

“Vision: 120”We are nearing the end of our congregational process, “Vision: 120.” We will have taken 120 days to gain a greater understanding of our corporate and personal vision as disciples of Jesus. Thank you to those who completed the “Discipleship and Spiritual Growth Assessment” survey. We truly appreciate you taking the time to do this and giving us your feedback. In May, our Board of Directors will meet for their annual retreat and will analyze the information and feedback provided by you, for the purpose of future planning, ministry priorities, and budgeting as we go forward. Additionally, we will provide the congregation a summary report of what we have learned through this process and where the Lord may be leading us as a church. Again, we ask you to continue to prayerfully reflect upon your life as a disciple of Jesus and how you can grow in your relationship with Jesus through your church. And…

*Continue to participate in weekly Worship, Bible study, Life Groups, daily prayer time, and servant opportunities at Red Hill.

*Commit to pray daily for Red Hill and your relationship with Jesus.

The burial of Jesus in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea is mentioned in all four Gospels (Mt 27:57; Mk 15:43; Lk 23:50; Jn 19:38-39). This is a specific detail that lends credibility to the account. Furthermore, it’s an embarrassing detail that the disciples would not likely have forged. After all, according to the Gospels, the disciples fled and Peter had even denied knowing Jesus. Yet here is a wealthy and powerful member of the ruling Jewish Council (Sanhedrin), coming to Pilate to ask for permission to bury Jesus in his own tomb. Adding to the embarrassment, according to John 19:38-42, Joseph was assisted in the burial by another leader of the Pharisees, Nicodemus (who met with Jesus secretly in John 3). Joseph was of such a stature that Pilate conceded to deliver the body over to him, but only after confirming with the centurion that Jesus was in fact dead (Mk 15:44-45).

2. Jesus Christ’s tomb was empty after three days…Not even this claim should be controversial today, since it was acknowledged by Romans and Jews as well as by the first Christians. Of course, there were widely divergent explanations, but there was a remarkable consensus on this point. The Jewish leaders claimed that the body was stolen by the disciples. This is asserted in Matthew 28:11-15)…unable to locate Jesus, dead or alive…the very fact that they sought alternative explanations for the resurrection demonstrates that the empty tomb was a historical fact.2

Of course, there are other evidences of the resurrection that I have not mentioned here. As one of my professors said to me, “When you look at all the evidence of Easter, it takes more faith not to believe than to believe!” Easter is our hope. Easter is God’s promise. Again, I cite Hank Hanegraaff who makes the point so well:

The importance of this event cannot be minimized, for Jesus Himself proclaimed that His resurrection would prove His power over death, and thus His deity (John 2:18-22). Not only that, but Christ’s resurrection is the very heart of the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

May you and your families have a happy and blessed Easter!

In God’s Joy,

Pastor Seth

New Sermon Series: “A. D.” The Bible Continues

(Through June 28, 2015)

Beginning on Easter night, NBC TV will be airing a new mini-series entitled, “A. D.” The producers of The Bible and the Son of God movies have created this twelve-week series about the history of the early church as told through the book of Acts. Consequently, beginning in April, our sermon series will follow the themes from the movie “A. D.” and we will add texts from the book of Acts, other parts of scripture, and the Gospels!

In conjunction with the network mini-series, “A.D”, we will examine the life of the early church as told through the book of Acts. The early church struggled against persecution, martyrdom, Roman oppression, and political revolts to launch a movement that literally changed the course of human history. The book of Acts is the story of the power of the Holy Spirit working through real people to share the story of Jesus. This mission continues today through the ministry of Jesus’ church in this community and around the world. Here is an outline of the series for the month of April:

April 5th: Easter Sunday: Sermon Title: “The Grave Robber.” Text(s): Acts 1.1-5; Mark 16.1-8.Everyone wants a miracle. But here’s the catch: No one wants to be in a situation that necessitates one! Of course, you can’t have one without the other. The prerequisite for a miracle is a problem, and the bigger the problem, the greater the potential miracle. God is a God who can make your impossible possible!

April 12th: Sermon Title: “The Reality of the Resurrection.”Text(s): Acts 1.6-11; John 20.24-29.It matters how we treat the resurrection. It either entertains us or propels us forward. Jesus’ resurrection is meant to be real in our everyday lives—not tucked away in some nice little story, but living, breathing, and powerfully stirring our lives just as it was in the lives of the disciples.

April 19th: Sermon Title: “The Work of the Holy Spirit.”Text(s): Acts 2.1-13; John 10.11-18.The Holy Spirit’s arrival at Pentecost fulfilled Jesus’ promise in Acts chapter 1, resulting in great revival and a world-changing missions movement that is still happening today.

April 26th: Sermon Title: “Stand”Text(s): Acts 4.13-22; John 15.1-8Every day, for the rest of our lives, we will face circumstances and situations where we have to choose whether we will stand for Christ. Peter and John had every reason in the world to not stand for Christ. They were imprisoned, threatened, and their lives endangered, but they chose to stand and God did powerful things in and through their lives.

As you will see elsewhere in this Newsletter, we are going to have classes and groups using curriculum based on the movie, and we will watch the movie as well. You are encouraged to watch (or record) the weekly episode (invite a friend over!), and with our group offerings, sermons, and the Compass, learn about the power of God through the movement of the early church.

God is still at work in the church today! What God began in the first-century continues through Red Hill and other Jesus-centered churches—the proclamation of the Gospel and the life-changing power of the Holy Spirit working through ordinary lives! We look forward to seeing you in church!

Adult Sunday SchoolThe Book of ActsSundays at 10:00am and 11:15amBeginning April 12th in the Fellowship HallIn conjunction with our sermon series and the airing of the television show, A.D., we will be studying the Book of Acts in our adult Sunday school classes beginning April 12th. Acts picks up where Luke’s Gospel leaves off, recording the early progress of the gospel as Jesus’ disciples took it from Jerusalem throughout Judea, Samaria, and the rest of the Mediterranean world. The story begins with Christ’s ascension and the events of Pentecost. As Gentiles begin responding to the gospel, the focus shifts to Paul and his missionary journeys. Acts forms a bridge between the four Gospels and the rest of the New Testament, showing how the apostles carried on Christ’s work and provides a historical background for Romans through Revelation. Acts is the second of two New Testament books written by Luke. Like his Gospel, Acts was a letter to Luke’s friend Theophilus, written sometime in around 60 A.D. Bring your Bibles and join us for our study through this important book!

Wednesday Morning Bible Class“I Believe.” A Study of the Ancient CreedsWednesday 7:15 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. in the Prayer ChapelTeacher: Pastor SethBelief - Biblical belief - is more than simply thinking something is true. Biblical belief is living as if what we believe is true. For example, I can say I believe it is true that Jesus said to forgive my enemies; it is another thing to actually forgive my enemies!

The Creeds, the Apostles’ and Nicene, are meant to reflect this reality. When we confess, “I believe…” we are really saying to God and to one another that because of these confessional truths, I can live differently. As a Christian, I (can) live according to the alternative truths articulated in the ancient creeds. Is this true for you?

Join us on Wednesday mornings as we explore the Creeds and the difference they make for Christian belief and practice. In addition to the Creeds themselves, we are studying the Biblical foundations of the Creeds. Here are some upcoming topics to be discussed:

*Why say the Creeds at all? Isn’t the Bible enough?*The history of the Lutheran Confessions and the Creeds.*What does it mean that Jesus “descended into hell?”

As a part of this class, we also worship together and pray for others. This study is open to all! Men and women, young and “seasoned” saints—you can begin at any point in our study! You are also invited to join us after the class for breakfast at Coco’s in Tustin. Bring your Bibles. If you do not have one, we’ll get you a Bible! Looking forward to seeing you!

BIBLE STUDY & THEOLOGY

BIBLICAL COMMUNITYBiblical Community, by Angela CalderonOften we hear that living a Christian life is a journey, and God’s word is alive and active, but what does that really mean? I was listening to a radio broadcast the other day, and the speaker clearly defined this journey. He stated that when we make the decision to be followers of Jesus, God guides us through various stages of the “journey”. In fact, the “journey” has many stages: Some people are at the Sunday worship stage; some are ready for deeper learning and attend Bible study; some desire even stronger connection with other church members through activities; some are ready to serve the less fortunate within the community, and some are looking for closer trust and dependency on God. Any one of these stages may be repeated numerous times in various order depending on where you happen to be in your “journey”. No matter what stage you find yourself, the important thing is to allow yourself to remain open to the “Next Thing” God may be leading you to. God wants you to take risks and trust him with the “Next Thing” so you can grow in His love for you. Red Hill is working diligently to provide many “Next Thing” opportunities through a variety of events so you can connect with your brothers and sisters in Christ. Various study groups, life groups and service groups, as well as independent spiritual retreats like Cursillo and Tres Dias, are all available to help you develop a more personal relationship with God. Recently, two longtime members of Red Hill, Buddy and Heather Bullock, answered the call for their “Next Thing”. They have each been on their journeys for many years in various capaci-ties and these long time, faith-ful servants of Christ received a “Next Thing” call, both attending Cursillo in search of deeper, spiri-tual connection. We asked them about their experience and they shared the following:1. Why you decided this last set of weekends was the right time/did you feel God showed you it was indeed the right time?Buddy: I never decided that this was the time for me, or

Page 6: Red Hill Lutheran - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/redhilllutheranchurch/documents... · 2015-03-30 · Page 2 Aril 2015 Red Hill Lutheran Church Discipleship and Spiritual Growth

April 2015Page 6

us. I never wanted to go at all. I only went because Heather couldn’t if I didn’t. You also asked if God showed me that it indeed was the right time. 100%. It was definitely the right time. God is in control.Heather: I have been wanting to attend Cursillo the last few years after hearing of others within our congregation about their own experiences. Having the encouragement of our sponsors, guiding us, believing and praying this was the right time for us. I have been on retreats before grow-ing up in a Lutheran church, but it was in God’s plan and His time that we attended this Cursillo.

2. Did you feel that you heard from God on your Cursillo weekend? Buddy: I heard from God my entire Cursillo weekend and every day since.Heather: Yes, God’s love was abundant throughout the en-tire retreat. From music, worship, food, laughter, tears and fellowship, God was present.

3. What would you tell someone who is thinking about go-ing to Cursillo but unsure? Buddy: We all need to be closer to God. Most of us can’t do this on our own. This weekend is spent with a commu-nity of God’s children that will teach you how to accept more of God in your heart. I have never felt better as a husband, father, friend and son of the one and only God.Heather: Give yourself the gift of these three days. Sur-render yourself to God and reap the benefit of His love through this experience. You are worthy of all the gifts He has to offer you. These retreats have strengthened our marriage, family and our commitment to our church, community and to the Lord.

Together: We will forever be grateful for the experience of Cursillo and welcome the blessing of serving others so they too may have the chance to be closer to our Lord.

So, what is God asking of you for your “Next Thing”? Below are the opportunities currently available. Ask God to show you where and how He wants you to connect. Watch the weekly bulletin, read the monthly newsletters, and visit me on the patio after services on Sunday to stay in tune with all of the current and upcoming events at Red Hill. I would love a chance to talk with you. You may have some great ideas we haven’t thought of yet!

Jason and Mindy HarneyR e d H i l l h a s a l w a y s embraced members from diverse origins. This month we’d like to introduce you to a Jewish girl, whose family converted to Christianity, and who met a young man

from a “secular humanist” family while attending her Chapman University choral music class. But, both have so much else in common - both “SoCals;” Mindy Massey (Cypress High ’90) and Jason Harney (Fountain Valley ’89). Each, one of five children (hers a blended family), both extroverts who loved music and arts, the beach, travel, and with a chemistry that clicked. They dated, but when he continued to challenge her Christian faith, they parted – briefly. In answer to Mindy’s prayers, the Holy Spirit opened Jason’s heart. They reconciled, and wed in 1997, four years after they first met.

MISSION/SERVICE

Mindy, who’d been singing since she was three, taught at a music academy for children from 1996-2002, sang professionally and was Director of Children’s Musicals at her Long Beach Church. Jason’s early monetary success came from his academic prowess – at 16, winning $11,000 on “Sale of the Century” teen game show. In 1996, Jason received his BM in Choral Conducting and began his teaching career in Orange County schools, as well as leading honor choruses, and is currently teaching music at Aliso Niguel High School. In the first five years of their marriage the Harneys traveled widely, leading choral groups in Europe and Asia, almost causing an international incident when on a freezing day, Jason donned his red “Long Johns” and pranced on the Great Wall of China. On their own, they embarked on a railroad adventure from the Alps to the Eiffel Tower and on to romantic Italy. Their activities evolved when little Clara arrived in 2002, with four siblings following in a 10-year period. Camping trips became the norm. Now their mini-van pulls a tent trailer with accommodations for six (do they rotate the 7th person to a pup tent each night?)In 2008, Jason received his MA in Worship Leadership from Azusa Pacific and accepted a position as Choir Director at Red Hill where he had sung years before with college choirs. He has become a favorite with our choir members, staff as well as our congregants as he leads us in our Sunday services and concerts. He has also played piano and guitar with the 10:00 a.m. Worship Team. His contributions have included adding a children’s choir and summer music camp and organizing the 2014 trip to France. On a personal, level he’s won state-wide competitions and performed at prestigious conventions for conductors, traveling all over the world.Back on the home front in Mission Viejo, Mindy is the official manager of the busy household while home-schooling and hosting schooling events for her four older children, Clara 12, Laura 10, Evan 7, and Annie 5, in all their subjects. (Peter 2, is undoubtedly auditing the classes). As leader of Annie’s Awana group (a fun scripture memorizing club), she creates puppets, scripture songs and Bible lessons. At Red Hill, Mindy is choir member and soloist and has helped at VBS. She and Jason also chaired our Young Families Bible Study. They still make time for themselves as a couple. Each year they alternate surprising each other with a romantic wedding anniversary getaway. (Check in with them if you want some great ideas). Their listed hobbies overlap: Dates with each other, hiking, cooking, and reading. Jason added bodysurfing at the Wedge.Accomplishments and goals: Using their talents to serve and please God: in their careers, in church, as a husband and

wife, as parents, as managers of their material gifts from God and finding joy glorifying God through music. In the future: Jason - Be a guest speaker for homeschooling events and conventions; run the half marathon. Mindy – Train my children in the Lord; build my Homemade Almond Butter business. They embrace both Red Hill worship service styles (traditional liturgy was new to them) and appreciate the church’s commitment to scripture. They enjoy the people of Red Hill and love it when you come and say “Hi.” Oh, yes, be sure to ask to try some almond butter.

Congregational CareAt Red Hill, we desire to be a church that expresses mercy and care for others—inside and outside our church. In times of crisis, grief, transition, and confusion, we believe and trust that God will be with us and strengthen us to go forward in hope. God uses His people, the church, to be His hands and heart! The Pastors, staff and volunteers of our church, will offer appropriate care, prayer, and support for you through the difficult and painful moments of life. Here are the ways that our church will care for you:Pastoral CareOften, difficult and painful times in life happen suddenly. At other times, we may know in advance that a life-change is approaching. • A child is born. We can visit in order to welcome and bless this new life and gift from God!

• You are struggling with a significant decision about health care and faith (See Red Hill Care Counsel below).

• You lose a job, home, important relationship, or are facing a significant transition in your life.

• You are deeply questioning your faith. Contact us for an appointment to explore your situation and needs. Pastor, Donna Kunz at 714-544-3131 etx.100 or [email protected].

Deacon Ministry TeamWhile every Christian is considered a priest (1 Peter 2.9), and is expected to offer mercy to their neighbor, historically the church has called, trained, and set-aside certain leaders who have spiritual gifts of mercy. In the New Testament, the Greek word, diakonos means “servant,” and these servants, or deacons, were charged with caring for the needs of the local church through acts of mercy and kindness. The responsibilities of the Deacon Team are:

-Visitation of our members who are hospitalized and/or homebound… -Bringing Holy Communion to those who are unable to attend weekly Worship at Red Hill…-Anointing with Holy Oil and praying with, and for, those who are in need of prayer for any reason…-Sitting with someone and talking about life issues and challenges such as difficult relationships, loss of a job, or significant changes in someone’s life…-With staff assistance and church resources, helping church members with various needs and concerns…

If you have any questions about Congregational Care, need a deacon to connect with you, or would like to serve in this ministry, contact Susie Portune, at [email protected].

Red Hill Care Counsel TeamWhen a quality of life or life threatening medical diagnosis is received, many of us are traumatized by two emotions: fear and denial. At Red Hill, we have a team of knowledgeable and compassionate people to help empower our church members to make more informed decisions as consumers of medical care.

By asking the Red Hill Care Counsel team for assistance with sorting out issues, we can advise you as to how you may gain insight into maximizing your health care benefits, obtain a second opinion at a center of excellence, and assist you with helpful tips when talking with your doctors. If you have any questions about Red Hill Care Counsel, contact Susie Portune, or Donna Kunz at [email protected].

Red Hill Prayer TeamOn Monday afternoon, a group of people pray for the needs of our congregation indicated on the Worship Response Cards from the previous Sunday morning. If you need prayer, contact Susie Portune, at [email protected], or Donna Kunz at [email protected].

20,000 dehydrated, high protein, and highly nutritious meals that will be used primarily to support development programs and save lives in developing countries around the world. “Flower Ministry”Every Sunday, flowers are given by Red Hill members in honor or memory of an important person in their lives. After Worship, loving volunteers take those flowers to the homes and hospitals of those facing illness and at times, celebrations of life.

Susie and Mike travel to Reno several times during the year to visit with their son Matthew and his family. Of her new role as Director of Congregational Care, Susie says, “It is a joy and an honor to be associated with this ministry. To serve our people when they are in need, to continually and prayerfully place Jesus front and center to those feeling isolated or alone, never forgetting that He is our source of help, what better way to do this than being a part of Congregational Care?”

Children’s Ministry is fired up about IGNITE! We love Jesus and want to share the Good News with our young friends. Our goal is to be used by the Holy Spirit to “Ignite the kids to love Jesus and seek him for answers by studying the Bible, engaging our Children’s Ministry program and sharing Jesus’ love with others.” Kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to gather in the Day Care room for fun Bible activities at 10am. For your child’s safety, we ask that you sign-in at the Children’s Ministry table, pick up a nametag and then escort your child to the Day Care room. Then we direct the kids to their classes for grade specific teaching. Preschool/Pre-K meets every week in room 12 for lesson, songs, snacks and playtime. We feel a family worshiping together is important so on the first Sunday of every month, K through 5th grade will worship in church with their families.Don’t miss out on our incentive program. Points are awarded for bringing your Bible (ESV version if possible), reciting your memory verse, learning the books of Bible and participating in class. We have some great prizes to give from our treasure box.

Take the journey! Our VBS will take your kids to uncharted territory where they will begin to understand that obedience to God can lead them beyond the expected. So, toss the map, stick close to your guide, and prepare to listen for God’s direction in this journey that is unknown to us, but known by Him.

The adventure begins: June 22nd – 26th from 9:00am – 12:00pm. Registration is free!Program is for incoming Preschool – 6th grade.Volunteers are needed too – incoming 7th grade through adults. Childcare will be offered for volunteers with children under preschool. Registration is open and closes when we reach our child to volunteer ratio. Stop by the Children’s Ministry table to register.

First Communion – Our spring class is for 2nd grade or older who are interested in participating in Communion. Stop by the Children’s Ministry table to pick up a workbook that parent and child will complete together at home. Parent and child will meet with Pastor Joel to review and answer questions about Communion on April 26th, after the 10am service. First Communion will be on May 3rd at the 10am service.
