2012 Worldwide Winner: Sean Millichamp

Senior Linux Architect, Secure-24, Inc.

Sean has been deploying Red Hat-based

systems into production customer environ-

ments for 14 years. However, it wasn’t until

he encountered Red Hat Linux 4 in 1997

that he believed he’d found a distribution

professional and well-designed enough to

use for a customer’s critical business needs.

Since then, he has deployed Red Hat Linux

and Red Hat Enterprise Linux in countless

different configurations and roles for a

number of different companies. Some of

the projects he’s worked on include Red Hat

Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, ldirectord,

Cobbler, Augeas, and Puppet.

As Senior Linux Architect, Sean is charged

with setting the technical standards and

direction of his company’s Red Hat Enterprise

Linux environment. His responsibilities also

include interviewing and working with his

company’s recruiting department to ensure

they find the best Linux candidates, preferably

those with Red Hat certifications.

Congratulations to Sean and all those who

submitted their impressive stories in our

annual Red Hat Certified Professional of the

Year contest.

Individual Exam Session

Red Hat Certified Professional of the YearThe Red Hat Certified Professional of the Year award recognizes the hard work, expertise,

and ingenuity of Red Hat certified professionals.

Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst presents Sean Millichamp with the RHCP of the Year Award.

“ The hands-on nature and quality of

material covered on Red Hat exams

ensures that candidates possessing

a Red Hat certification have a

predictable and strong baseline of

knowledge. When we interview a

candidate with an RHCE they always

do well on our technical interview.”

Red Hat® Enterprise Virtualization 3 has the features you need and the fl exibility that will carry you into the future. All at a price you can afford.

Enterprise readyRed Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3 has more

than 100 new features to improve virtual

machine performance, increase manageability,

and enhance usability. It also includes scal-

ability, performance, and hardware support

enhancements inherited from Red Hat

Enterprise Linux 6. Red Hat Enterprise

Virtualization Manager is hosted on Red Hat

Enterprise Linux 6, and powered by JBoss®

Enterprise Application Platform. A simple,

powerful graphical user interface lets you easily

manage hundreds of hosts with thousands of

VMs—ensuring you have everything you need

to virtualize your most challenging workloads.

Fast and scalable

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization dominates

the independent, industry-standard bench-

marks for virtualization (SPECvirt_sc2010®).

As of January 1, 2012, Red Hat Enterprise

Virtualization claimed top virtualization

performance scores for two- and four-socket

servers, and had the only eight-socket server

scores published. This includes the highest

overall performance score and the highest

scale-up of 552 high-performing virtual

machines on a single server.*

Easy to extend

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization has the same

hardware compatibility as Red Hat Enterprise

Linux. Extended reporting, virtual machine

consolidation, and chargeback capabilities

are a few of the software options available

from vendors at marketplace.redhat.com.

Our online marketplace helps you learn more

about certifi ed products that integrate with

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization.

Refreshingly open

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization is built

on two open source projects: kernel-based

virtual machine (KVM) and oVirt.

KVM is a robust open source project

providing virtualization at the kernel level.

KVM is supported by leading software vendors,

including Red Hat, IBM, AMD, Intel, HP, and

SuSE. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization

hypervisor is built with KVM.

oVirt is an ecosystem of projects offering

feature-rich datacenter virtualization

management. Red Hat has open sourced

the entire Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization

management stack, and donated it to the

oVirt project. Through oVirt, the open source

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.1 is:

community—including commercial partners

such as IBM, Intel, Cisco, NetApp, SuSE, and

Canonical—continues to develop cutting-edge

open source virtualization management.

Red Hat also helped create the Open

Virtualization Alliance (OVA), a group that

focuses on fostering interoperable virtual-

ization solutions. The OVA’s mission is to

drive open standards and the adoption of

open virtualization based on KVM.

Remarkably affordable

Like all Red Hat solutions, Red Hat Enterprise

Virtualization is purchased by subscription.

One yearly price includes access to software,

updates, upgrades, and technical support.

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Servers

is sold on a per-socket basis for the hypervisor

and includes the hypervisor, manager, and

other features—including the power user

portal and reports portal.

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for

Desktops is an addition to Red Hat Enterprise

Virtualization for Servers and is sold in

packs of 25 concurrent desktop connections.

It is available with business-hours and

24x7 support options.

No matter how many servers and desktops

you need, Red Hat offers a lower total cost of

ownership and faster return on investment

compared to proprietary solutions.

“ We’ve seen improvements in how we can provideon-demand resources to our artists by leveragingopen source and working with Red Hat.”

Red Hat Training and certification

When organizations include Red Hat Training as part of

a deployment and maintenance strategy, they can maximize

the value and performance of their open source technologies.

Red Hat Training arms IT organizations with the knowledge

and proven, hands-on skills to optimize the performance of

Red Hat and JBoss technologies, enhance productivity, and

mitigate risk.

Red Hat-trained customers are better prepared to:

• Successfully deploy and manage new Red Hat and

JBoss enterprise applications and solutions

• Solve both routine and challenging problems in less time

• Better manage internal resources with cross-trained staff

• Spread best practices within their IT organizations to

improve efficiencies

• Keep IT organizations competitive and reduce turnover

With more than 20 Red Hat Enterprise Linux courses, Red Hat

delivers one of the most comprehensive curricula offered in

today’s marketplace. Unlike most vendors, Red Hat orients

training and certification around real-world job roles and tasks.

Certified instructors actively engage students in task-focused

activities, lab-based knowledge checks, and facilitative discus-

sions. This ensures maximum skills transfer and retention,

which in turn enables increased productivity and a higher

return-on-investment (ROI).

The value of Red Hat Training

Industry-leading, role-based training courses

Performance-based certifications from Red Hat are among the

most highly regarded in the IT industry. The program’s success

stems from a solid track record of benchmarking and hands-on

skills assessment. Since candidates are required to perform the

tasks required in actual IT environments, Red Hat customers

can be assured that certification professionals on their teams

have demonstrated the skills required. Red Hat offers a full

hierarchy of credentials to provide a comprehensive and flexible

program for an entire IT staff.

Red Hat continues to lead the pack in open source curriculum

and certification. IDC consistently ranks Red Hat in the leader

category in training and certification in its competitive analysis,

IDC MarketScape: Worldwide IT Education and Training Vendor Analysis . This third-party study assesses OEMs that offer train-

ing, and ranks them on strategy and vision.
