Congratulations to the Hinsdale Central Girls Track and Field team for winning both levels of its 26th Annual Devilette Invitational this past Saturday. Congratulations to senior Annie Zaher for being named Athlete of the Meet. Zaher ran an all-time school record 4:53.58 fully automatic time in winning the 1,600-meter run. Varsity won 120-115 over Oak Park-River Forest to win for the second year in a row and sixth time in the past seven years. The sophomores won for the fifth straight year with 163 points -- 78 ahead of second-place OPRF.

The Hinsdale Central High School Sailing team competed in the Midwest Central District Mallory Trophy Qualifying Regatta held at Sheridan Shores Yacht Club on Apr. 16-17. The Mallory Trophy is the oldest national high school championship regatta dating back to 1930. The championship is put on by the Inter-Scholastic Sailing Association (ISSA). Originally sailed in Atlantic-Class sloops, the regatta and its qualifying regattas are now sailed in double-handed 420s in a two division format. This weekend’s regatta was the first round of qualifiers for the Mallory Trophy Regatta. Seven District teams qualified for the Regional Regatta where the top two teams will qualify for the National Championships. Hinsdale Central placed 7th and advanced to the second round qualifier for the first time in 4 years. This year, the Mallory will be held in Charleston, South Carolina. The weekend’s warm temperatures made for two beautiful days near the water. Winds were light at just 5-7 knots on Saturday morning. The winds picked up to 10 knots in the afternoon and 16 races were completed. Sherman Thompson skippered in Division A with Berenger Jeannides as his crew. In Division B, David Phlamm and CJ Enright alternated skipper duties and Evan Fallon and Mitchell Thompson alternated crew duties. At the end of the first day of racing, the Devil’s young sailors had Hinsdale within 3 points of qualifying for Regionals. Team Captain Jacob Dannhausen-Brun missed Saturday due to the state-level high school engineering competition. Sunday brought light morning winds of just 3-5 knots. Jacob Dannhausen-Brun returned to the water on Sunday as skipper and CJ Enright (junior) as his crew for 3 races and Sherman Thompson and Berenger Jeannides as skipper and crew for 3 races, Hinsdale Central steadily rose in the standings. Dannhausen-Brun and Enright led the second to the last race through three marks, but were nearly overtaken by New Trier’s Alex Folkes and Ben Spring. When Folkes’ boat hit the finish mark, the Central team took first place in the race

All three levels of the Badminton program won against Hinsdale South Monday night at Senior Night. Come on over and watch some great badminton!

The Varsity Tennis team (10-1) continued their impressive season with victories over each of the teams that won the last three Wisconsin state tennis championships Saturday in Elm Grove, Wisconsin. Doubles went undefeated in 12 matches as the #1 team (Michael Czlonka/Zack Elliott) went 3-0 as did #2 team (Joe Gurevicius/ Jack Gartlan). #3 (Joe Daw/ Billy Burress) and #4 team (Nick Alex/Marty Fecarotta) likewise were a perfect 3-0 on the day. Singles was led by Nick Calzolano and Trevor Hamilton (4-2 overall) while Will Thornton and Andrew Buhelos went 6-0 helping HC win the prestigious "Best of the Midwest" Tournament. Overall the Red Devils won 19 of the 21 matches they played. Way to go HC! Good luck this Weekend in the Jay Kramer Invite.

The Boys Varsity Lacrosse team has been on a bit of a tear recently, upping their record to 5-1 in state play. The team has notched victories over St. Charles North 13-8, Maine South 15-11, and perhaps their best victory to date, over highly regarded Fenwick High this past Saturday in a thrilling overtime victory 11-10. On Apr. 12th, St Charles North challenged the Devils early, taking a lead with a 3-2 margin after the first quarter. The

Page 10: Red Devil Update Student E-News April 22, 2016 · 2016-04-22 · On Thursday, April 14, 2016, the Red Devil JETS team descended upon the UIUC campus in Urbana for the WYSE State Finals

Devils fought back to have a narrow lead at 7-6 at half and ended up limiting the visiting North Stars to one more goal while cruising to victory on a fantastic defense and 6 second half scores to climb to a 13-8 win. Kyle Hyland paced the victory in the second half along with Jake Simon, taking 8 of 9 face-offs in the 4th quarter and 18 of 22 for the game. Hyland led the Devils with 3 goals and an assist while four others each scored two goals each, including Zak Marinko (3 assists), Colin Parker, Andy Evans (2 assists), Nate Stapleton (1 assist) with Jake Simon and Joe Dipofi each adding both a goal and assist. Likewise on Apr. 14th, the Devils started slow against a pesky and hard-fighting opponent in Maine South, who took an early lead of 2-1 in the first quarter, only for the Devils to come back and lead 8-5 at half. The Devils again pulled away in the 4th quarter, taking 8 of 9 face-offs (22 of 30 for the game), again behind the amazing faceoff skills of Hyland with a couple of wins from Jake Simon. Zak Marinko had his highest goal total of the year logging a “Double Hattie” with 6 goals and one assist. Junior Defenseman Brian McCarty logged his first assist of the year, taking a ground ball steal in the first quarter off the faceoff to feed Marinko’s first goal. Fellow senior Attackmen Joe DiPofi and Nate Stapleton each added 3 goals for the Devils with others scoring, including Colin Parker with one --and perhaps the game sealer coming from junior Defensive stalwart John Kwasigroch taking a ground ball coast to coast and while dodging several attacking Maine Hawks, buried a shot for the first defenseman goal of the year. The Devils pulled away for a 15-11 victory. Assist makers included Marinko, McCarty, DiPofi, Jake Simon, Andy Evans, Peter Marcus and Luke DiPofi, all with one assist each with Hyland and Colin Parker each having two assists each. No stranger to overtime, the Devils took their experience of winning 11-10 in an extra period against their first opponent of the year in Neuqua Valley and applied it in an equally exciting fashion taking down the Fenwick Friars by an identical score of 11-10 on several last minute heroics. The Devils faced one of the best players in the state in Patrick Donahue (D1 Marquette commit), who despite furious defensive attention and forced turnovers from brothers John and Joe Kwasigroch, and other furious defensemen including Jack Cain, Robbie Kress, Brian McCarty and Andrew D’Aprile, was able to put in 7 of the Friars 10 goals. The game was nip and tuck throughout, with the Devils down 2-3 in the first quarter, 5-6 at half and 7-8 after the 3rd. Late in the 4th, Donahue put the Friars in front 10-9 with 35 seconds left in the game. On the ensuing faceoff, Kyle Hyland took yet another of his winning face-offs (22 of 23 on the game with a couple of wins from junior Jake Simon) and after a Friar goalie save, junior Colin Parker anticipated the clearing pass and took the ball from around the 45 yd. line, and after dodging several players, buried the game tying goal with only 15 seconds left. In overtime, Hyland won the faceoff but the Devils lost the ball in a Friar defensive attack. With the Friars attempting to score, John Kwasigroch was able to dislodge the ball and eventually forward a clear that made its way to Midfielder Zak Marinko, who beat his defender and while looking to pass, found himself open in the Friars zone and ripped a side arm shot for the game winner. Hyland, despite heavy defensive pressure throughout the game, paced Hinsdale with 3 goals with Andy Evans, Nate Stapleton and Peter Marcus all tallying 2 each. Evans added two assists along with one each for Stapleton, Parker and Jake Simon. Senior goalie Charlie Little likewise made several crucial defensive stops making 14 saves. The Devils face perennial rival Lyons Township on Sat. Apr. 22nd at 11:30 at LT - 4900 S. Willow Springs Road. Hinsdale calls upon the Red Devil Nation to make the trip east to support their Lacrosse teams in this storied rivalry!!

The Boys Freshman Lacrosse team had a very busy week playing three games and winning all three. They faced a tough Lincoln-Way team and took it down to the wire and won the game 7-6 with some impressive clock management in the end. Drew Azinger had 3 goals that night, and Nate Sutton scored 2. Single goals were also scored by Matt D'Aprile and Jack McCarty. The Red Devils then faced Maine South and took the victory 6-3. Nate Sutton led the scoring that night with 3 goals. The team showed some fantastic teamwork that night with excellent passing and ball movement. The team is off to a great start with a record of 5-1!

The Boys Varsity Water Polo team competed in the Best of the West Tournament this week, facing some top- ranked teams in the state. The boys started off the tournament losing to an undefeated Naperville Central and quickly following up with a win against Buffalo Grove High School. This placed them into the 4th place bracket group for the remaining games of the tournament that were played on Saturday. There the boys were unable to find a win, but played closed games versus Lincoln-Way Central and Mundelein High Schools. The boys finished in 6th place at the Best of the West Tournament with (1-3) record. Stand-out performances from the weekend go to senior Ryan Musch & junior Mason Schmidt on their offensive play at the tournament. The boys’ next competition will at the Brother Rice Tournament this Friday and Saturday.

The Red Devil Varsity Baseball team went 4-2 last week with big wins over Proviso West, Willowbrook, Benet, and Leyden. The following day, Rob Dandorph threw a complete game against Benet, giving up only two runs. Alex Herbst hit a home run giving the offense a boost. Spencer Tate followed that up with a home run against Leyden on

Saturday, giving a cushion to Anthony Pescara, Andrew Zapka, and Alex Herbst, who threw well on mound. On Monday, Hinsdale Central traveled to Lincoln-Way East to take on the Griffins. Anthony Pescara pitched four strong innings to start, but it wasn’t enough as Lincoln-Way squeaked out a 3-1 victory. At Oak Park, Eric Stephens came back to throw five very strong innings against the Huskies. Oak Park held a small lead of 1-0 into the bottom of the 6th and then pushed across some insurance and finished with a 5-0 win. The Red Devils continue to play good baseball and look to beat rival Lyons Township at Hinsdale Central on Friday and Saturday afternoons.

The Varsity Volleyball team went on the road and defeated conference opponent Oak Park-River Forest Tuesday night 25-19, 25-23. Junior hitter Mark Zelisko led the way with 5 kills and 2 blocks. Seniors Adam Conklin, Will Thompson and Josh Vozenilek came up with big plays to stop OPRF's come back late in the second game. The win improves their record to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference. The Red Devils play in the season's first tournament of the year on Saturday at Minooka.

Fremd is the third team in the group and that match takes place Saturday —both Naperville Invite contests are at New Trier. Go Devils! The JV1 team was victorious against Sandburg—1-0. Despite taking a 1-0 lead into halftime and controlling most of the tempo of the game, the JVII Soccer team was not able to escape from St. Charles with a victory. St. Charles scored two second half goals and was able to muster a 2-2 tie against the Red Devils. The team scored three second-half goals en route to beating Neuqua Valley by a score of 4-0. After a tight first-half contest, the girls were able to put some distance between themselves and a tough opponent.
