Let’s talk fluorideAugust 28, 2012

(Red Deer, Alberta)– Two experts will present cases- one forand one against adding fluoride to municipal water- when TheCity hosts a speaker session and debate on September 11 at theSheraton Red Deer Hotel.

The day kicks off with the speaker session running from noonuntil 1:30 p.m. in the Monaco Room. Dr. James Beck, professorof Medical Biophysics from the University of Calgary, will presenta case against fluoride; and, Dr. Digby Horne, an Alberta HealthServices’ Central Zone Medical Officer of Health will present acase for fluoride.

A council panel and debate will follow at 5 p.m., where amoderated session will give people an opportunity to present toand ask questions of Council, with a maximum time limit of fiveminutes each.

“We want people to come out, hear debate on both sides of theissue, share their feedback and connect with Council. Everyoneis invited to attend,” said Tara Shand, Acting CommunicationsManager.

Red Deerians and regional water customers who cannot attendthe speaker session can visitwww.reddeer.ca to see a videobroadcast of the session immediately following thepresentations.

Right now, The City adds fluoride to its municipal water supply ina concentration of less than 0.7 mg/L per the guidelines set outby Health Canada. The City is legally required to continue thispractice until administration is directed, by City Council, to applyfor an amendment to its operating approval.

This is the final phase of public consultation before City Councildecides whether to move the issue toplebiscite or councildebate.

Red Deer streets are comingBy: Steve Woolrich

It’s no secret that art and music can have a significant impact on any community. However, many residentsmay not appreciate how it helps create safer places. It all began back in 2010 around an old piano, nowreferred to as the Ross Street Piano located on our new Ross Street Patio in the heart of our great city. This was part of the impetus for supporting new projects that incorporate more art and music for all of us toenjoy throughout the year.

Creating this urban synergy requires much more than an instrument or a canvas, it requires talented peoplewith a passion for their craft and those that care deeply for theirCommunity. This summer marked thebeginnings of a new collaboration for us at SeCure Consulting Solutions Inc., by seeking additional partnersthat possess the same passion for community as we do. It’s great musicians like Randi Boulton and greatartists like Brian Usher that help us restore balance in our life, even if it’s for a moment or two as we listen toa tune or get mesmerized by their art.

Through the arts we often find new meaning and connection to others around us. It helps heal us andstrengthen community bonds. As fall approaches, we are quickly preparing for an Art Show at the ScottBlock in mid-October and a Special project in the Dominican Republic this November, including RandiBoulton and myself. We are continuing to help foster a culture of caring in Red Deer and beyond and hopeyou will join us.

FLAM

ENCO

!

The hauntingly expressive voice ofElena Morales and the musical genius of guitarist Liron Manreflect an undeniable flamencotradition. These talented artists come from heart of Southern Spain and joinFiona Malena Flamenco Ensemble for this uniqueperformance on Saturday, September 22nd at the City Centre Stage.

This is Canadian dancer Fiona Malena’s latest production, which alsofeatures percussionist/saxophonistOliver Migueland thepassionate dancing ofAnastassiia Moussatova,Marinella SurianiandNorie Tani. Reflecting on the visual and magical statesconjured by an eclipse, a dynamic musical dialogue emerges between performers. For the first time ever in Canada , flamencodance is fused with the Hang Drum, a modern melodic percussion instrument, rich in overtones.

As in an eclipse, audiences are left with a sensation of being taken out of one’s normal perception and the sudden emergence ofsomething extraordinary
