President’s Piece for September 2019
The Matchplay competition continues; now that the preliminary round is just about completed there are some sur-prises and some expected results, but all include some good golf played in great spirit.
We’ve had our first sausage sizzle since a winter adjournment and look forward to more fun playing golf, including our match against Peninsula Pirates on October 13 at Ringwood and our road-trip to Flinders on 23rd October.
Our Christmas function – always a good night, is set for December, Saturday 14, so make a note on your calendars now.
We send warm greetings to those on our sick list; if you can make it in for coffee we’d love to see you.
Best wishes to all Red Cappers,
Roger Henderson
One Day I accidently overturned my golf cart. Elizabeth, a very attractive and keen golfer, who lived in a villa on the golf course, heard the noise and came run-ning out: Are you OK, what’s your name? It’s Phil and I'm OK thanks, I replied. Phil, forget your troubles. Come to my villa, rest a while and I’ll help you get the cart up later. That’s mighty nice of you, I answered, but I don’t think my wife would like it. Oh, come on, Elizabeth insisted. She was very pretty, very sexy and persuasive.... I was weak. Well OK I finally agreed, and added but my wife won’t like it. After a few restorative brandy's and some creative putting lessons, I thanked my host: I feel a lot better now, but I know my wife is going to be really upset.. Don’t be silly! Elizabeth said with a smile: She won’t know anything, by the way where is she? Still under the cart..... I said.
Early in the month about a dozen of us ventured north to Swan Hill to the play beautiful Murray Downs course over three days. In gorgeous weather we played 9, 18 and 9 holes. The lakes and dams have a green dye added; they even put a green dye in the sand so that divot repairs blend in aestheti-cally to the surprisingly lush fairways for that part of the state. Modesty forbids me fully describing one of our number scor-ing a 2-shot birdie across water on the signature #3 hole, but some great golf was played.
Course Care—Repairing Divots: Some clubs will require divots to be repaired differently, however at the majority of clubs, sand buckets are available at the starting tees and divots should be repaired as follows: ~ Use the sand to fill the divot hole (and any others nearby). ~ Use a foot or a club to level the sand so that a reasonably flat lie remains for following players. ~ If buckets are not available or you have run out of sand, replace the divot in its hole if it is intact, or otherwise knock in the sides of the divot hole with a club so that a level lie is maintained. A careless repair may provide an unfair lie for other players, and may also damage course equipment and will result in the divot taking longer to repair.
