Mission Viejo Recycling News Winter 2020 Waste Management has proudly partnered with the City of Mission Viejo to sponsor free quarterly shredding events for Mission Viejo residents and business owners in 2020! Disposal of up to 10 banker-size file boxes (24” wide x 12” high) is permitted. Please ensure all documents and boxes are free of binders, paper clips, plastic sleeves and metal butterfly clips. Items not accepted include CDs, credit cards, three-ring binders, wire dividers, newspapers, magazines and spiral notebooks. When: Saturday, March 7, 2020 Where: Mission Viejo High School, 25025 Chrisanta Drive, Mission Viejo Time: 9:00-11:00 am, or until truck capacity is reached. Curbside tree collection for residents will take place on your collection day from December 26, 2019, through January 16, 2020. Please place trees at the curb, or in your green waste cart, on your regular collection day. • Trees longer than six (6) feet must be cut in half. • Please remove all decorations including tinsel, lights, ornaments and tree stands. • Flocked trees will be collected but cannot be recycled. This accounts for nearly 20% of all waste in our landfills. As a result, California has passed a new Senate Bill titled 1383 which will require residents to recycle their food waste beginning in 2022. You can help by following the below tips to reduce food waste: 1. Make a plan before grocery shopping. Check your fridge to see what items you already have and plan your meals around these items to ensure they are used. Once you make a list, stick to it and only buy what you need. 2. Micro-shop. Instead of purchasing a lot of groceries in one large trip, make smaller ones throughout the week. If you know you will be coming back to the store within a few days, this will prevent you from buying more than what you need. 3. Store your food strategically. By keeping everything neat and following the “first in, first out” principle, it will allow you to see older products and consume them before they spoil. 4. Eat your leftovers or use your leftover food when cooking a new meal. Keep in mind, some foods can be frozen and prepared later as well. Make a New Year’s Resolution to Reduce Food Waste! Free Bulky Item Pick-UpIf getting rid of junk is part of your New Year’s Resolution, let us help! Mission Viejo residents may request three (3) free bulky item pickups per year. We will retrieve up to five (5) large items, such as furniture or appliances, or up to 20 bags of trash or yard waste (less than 50 pounds) for each request.Electronic waste, such as TVs, computers, monitors and DVDs, is also included in this program. Please call the Customer Service Center at (949) 642-1191 at least 48 hours in advance of your collection day to schedule a pickup.
