RECYCLING GUIDEConstruction and demolition debris is material generated during the building,remodeling, or removal of buildings, roads, homes, tenant improvements, andlandscaping projects. The materials resulting from these activities include, but arenot limited to: concrete, asphalt, drywall, wood, glass, metals, red clay brick,soils, tree trimmings and shrubs.

Fortunately, most material from construction and demolition activities can be recy-cled into a number of useful products or reused. Concrete and asphalt are crushedand used as aggregate base for new roads; scrap metal is recycled into new metalproducts; yardwaste and non-reuseable wood can be converted into soil amendmentsand boiler fuel to generate electricity; and good quality red clay brick can bemarketed for re-use.

If you are a contractor, construction company, or a do-it-yourselfer, use this guideto begin minimizing and recycling your construction and demolition debris.

CONSTRUCTION &DEMOLITION DEBRIS

• Reduce: Proper materials management practicescan result in substantial cost savings. Ensure thatprecise estimates are made prior to purchasingmaterials, and that accurate measurements are madeprior to cutting materials so that excess scrap andwaste can be avoided. Consider having materialspre-cut at lumberyards, using engineered woodproducts, steel framing or other pre-manufacturedcomponents to reduce waste at your job site.

• Re-use: Donate salvageable materials to localcharity organizations. Items available for donationcan also be listed on the County’s materials exchangeweb site, LACoMAX, at www.lacomax.com, or call theSmart Business Recycling Program at(800) 741-9236.

• Recycle: Use the companies listed in this guidefor recycling construction and demolition debris fromyour jobs. Compare the costs of recycling with thecosts of disposal. Even if you have to pay forrecycling, you will still “make money” if you payless than the cost for landfill disposal.
