FREE Sunland Springs Village Community Tele-phone Directory? If not, we have your directory waiting for you at the HOA office. Come in and pick one up for each of your SSV addresses. Ad-ditional directories are a bargain at only $2 each.

All residents: We have been collect-ing directory information for resi-

dents who moved in after the directory was actually printed, for those we may have inadvertently missed, and for those who have had information changes. This information is compiled in a continuously-updated supplement which is avail-able free of charge to each household. Pick yours up at the HOA office now.

Every summer we take advantage of the off season quiet time to undertake larger maintenance projects. This year we’ve already gotten a few things done, but there are more to come.

Spa GroutingWe replaced the grout

in the spa again this year. That’s the strip of grout between the top tile and the pool deck, and you can’t see it unless you are in the spa. The heavy use we get during Spring Break season by heavily lathered visitors makes this appear to be an

annual event. The oils per-meate the grout turning it an unappealing black.

Pool Area We replaced the worn

swimming pool rail covers with new ones that look good and fit snugly.

We also plan to do some painting in the pool area. Terry has begun this project by touching up some of the walls where the paint was flaking off, and he painted the pump room door that was be-ginning to show some rust.

During the month of June we will be painting the

high travel areas of the pool deck. It has been less than one year since the entire deck was painted, but the relent-less footsteps of a couple of hundred users daily at the pool leave their marks. We use a solvent based deck paint to which we add grit to impede slippage. We will do the painting in sections to reduce pool closures.

Upcoming ProjectsA couple of years ago

we painted the main hall of the auditorium. This year we will paint the corridors on ei-ther side of the stage and the

rooms off the corridors and repair the baseboards on the west side of the main hall.

Every year we strip and replace the acrylic coating on the floor of the auditorium. We will do the same this year, but we are also due to replace a layer of the polyurethane under the acrylic coating.

We will also do some touch up painting in the Fitness Center and in other buildings.

We want to keep the facilities looking as good as possible. If you have some ideas, let me know.

Village Voice Of Hope Pastor Milt Zeeb BIBLE STUDYArdella Burtman

There is a community Bible Study every Friday morning at 9 AM in the Superstition Room. This is an interdenominational study, open to men and women. We are careful to keep the class to one hour so you will be out by 10 AM. There is no charge and no book to buy. Please bring your Bible - any translation will do.

We are presently studying Philippians. This is a verse by verse study which will take 12-15 weeks total. We started in February and anticipate that we will con-clude the study early in June.

Beginning the second week of June, we will spend approximately 3 weeks reflecting on the lives of men of the past from Augustine and on who have held on to the truth of Christian thought and left us a legacy which has uplifted and encouraged the church throughout the centuries. Sylvia Hansen is the teacher for this study and will be drawing heavily on the writings of John Piper for this study.

Even if you have missed some classes or know you will miss classes in the future because of other scheduled events and commitments, you are welcome to attend as you are able. While there is some building of content from one class on the next, in a sense each class stands alone. Any questions call Ardella Burtman at 480.993.3102.

As Sunland Springs Village continues to grow, it becomes increasingly necessary that we stay in touch with each other. We have many ways to do this. One way is through our growing collec-tion of Village photos. Whether you are a pro-fessional, an avid amateur or somewhere in between, you may have just the shots or filmstrips we need for our archives or to post on our web site.

This is a chance for you to help serve the community without becoming a member of any com-mittee or attending meetings.

If interested, email your photos to Paul Leber, [email protected].

Springs Chapel is blessed to have registered attendees from several states across the USA and Canada. Each spring season we are sad-dened to see approximately 80% of our attendees return to a summer home out of state. The “year-rounders” are special, faithful attend-ees, who have made Springs Chapel their “Home Worship Center”. God has and is blessing our worship minis-try beyond measure, as these wonderful and faithful ser-vants serve in many volunteer ministries together.

Considering the fact that we are all senior adults in an active community, activity is certainly true at Springs Chapel. The spirit of love, joy and commitment among us is strong and enduring. To-gether we believe the words of Hebrews that affirms our attitude. “Let us not give up meeting together....but let us encourage one another...” (Heb. 10:25). God has sent Springs Chapel gifted and committed attendees who Love the Lord and want to be found faithful serving Him until His return to earth again one day. That may be sooner than later. The author of Hebrews concludes Verse 25 with the words that encour-age everyone to be faithful in servanthood and “all the more as you see the day ap-proaching.”

If you are looking for a Worship Center that honors

God’s Word, promotes the spirit of love in fellowship and ministry, Springs Chapel is where you will find these blessings of life. You are invited to join in with our Springs Chapel attendees and experience the contentment, peace and hope we have in Christ Jesus, the Lord of the Church. We are a non-de-nominational worship min-istry. We adhere faithfully to the Word of God, the Bible, as our guide and authority for faith and practice, “Even more so, as we see the day of the Lord approaching.” You will find peace and great hope in preparation for that day of the Lord as you worship Him at Springs Chapel. We meet every Sunday morning at 9 AM, followed by a cof-fee fellowship hour at 10:00. We meet in the beautiful SSV Auditorium and exercise the Joy of the Lord together.

Get Brawny - Get Brainy!Dr. Wayne Phillips

We all know that strength training can make us stronger, but I was speaking to some SSV members in the Fitness Center the other day about a recent research study that had identified yet another benefit of strength train-ing for seniors. The study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, found an improvement in brain “Executive Function” among elderly men and women who participated in a strength and balance-based exercise program. “Executive Function” is how the brain deals with things that are essential to everyday liv-ing such as judgment, problem solving, decision making, planning and social conduct. These functions in turn depend on cognitive abilities such as attention, perception, memory and language -- functions that keep us up and running efficiently at any age!

The study found that participants in the strength training program scored much better on tests of brain func-tion and physical function than participants who did no strength training. The strength training group also had more than 50% less falls after one year compared to the non-strength training group. The researchers concluded that the strength based program may reduce falls by improving cognitive performance.

This study strongly supports my belief that maintaining and improving strength is essential as we age. Ben-efits can be gained from only two or three times a week for as little as 15 minutes per session. Of course to make the most of these benefits you have to ensure your lifting “technique” is both safe and effective, and, as I have observed over the last few months, there is definitely room for improvement in this area at the Fitness Center!

I conduct wellness orientations at the Fitness Center the first Thursday and Third Tuesday of each month between 9.00 am and 11.00 am. I will be available in person after these sessions for strength training/wellness questions or information, and at other times by appointment @ (602) 793-0752 or [email protected]

So remember - get more ‘brawny’ - get more ‘brainy’!

RECYCLESJane E. Harrel

The residents of SSV sure know how it is done! They recycle everything!

RONALD McDON-ALD HOUSE:

For several years now, you have been pulling the aluminum tabs off your drink cans and saving them for the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) where families of sick children may stay free while

their child is in the hospital being treated. RMH collects these in a large dumpster then a recycler claims them and pays RMH the going rate for the aluminum. You have donated over 1.2 million of these little puppies, and we are not going to stop now. This will be an ongoing proj-ect for years to come. Thanks Dick and Karen Paulin for spearheading this project.

WOODSHOP:What do you do with

the cans after you have re-moved the tab? Don’t just throw them in the garbage or the blue recycle bin in your garage, instead take them to the Woodshop and let them recycle them. There are three large cans outside of the Woodshop to drop them in any time of the day or night. They have a hydraulic lever machine that crushes the cans and drops them into another large can all in one smooth action. When they have six or eight bags full, the cans are taken to the nearest recycler paying the highest return.

They use that money to buy new equipment, replacement tools and parts, sharpen saw blades, and the machine that crushes the cans. Good job guys!

LIBRARY:We have one of the best

lending libraries where you can find a book, magazine, use the computer (a recycled donation from a resident), select a VHS or DVD movie

to watch, audio tapes and CDs. Do you like to work jigsaw puzzles? If so, there is always one being done in the library, or take one off the shelf to put together at home. These items have all come from your recycling dona-tions, but the volunteer crew, headed by Jan Orr, have to do some recycling of their own. Old, damaged and multiple copies of books are donated somewhere else.

NEWSPAPERS:

There is a large green and yellow container in the parking lot for recycling newspapers, magazines, shredded papers, junk mail, and used computer paper (no cardboard). This container is emptied on a regular basis by Abitibi Con-solidated for recycling which brings in a handsome profit for the HOA. Please help by bringing these throwaways to the container rather than put-ting them in the blue recycle bins in your garage.

CLASSIFIEDS:One of the best additions

to the ssvhoa.com website is the Classifieds. Being able to sell that recliner, sofa, TV, dining set, car, timeshare, condo in the cooler clime, even your services is prob-ably the most visited part of the website. This is the purest form of recycling. This type of “trading” is also done on the SSV Forum, which is al-ways chock full of interesting news and tips.

MONEY RECYCLED:The resident-run game of

Bingo recycles their profits to the HOA. You can see their contributions all over the village. Keep up the good work Bingo Bill and thank you to all of your wonderful volunteers.

All of the activities that Janet West puts together for us have a profit, which is

rolled into the Village En-hancement Fund, and then those dollars are used to make improvements to the Village. This helps keep your main-tenance fees down. Thank you Janet. What would we do without you?

MISCELLANEOUS THINGS WE DO:

The Quilters Club is always on the lookout for material scraps, thread and yarn. Poker and cribbage is played with recycled cards from casinos. Thanks to Joan Loux the Office is col-lecting your used eyeglasses for the Lions Club. There is also a receptacle in the Office for Campbell’s labels and General Mills box tops. These benefit a grade school in Mesa. The ink cartridges for printers can be recycled as is done in the Activities Office.

If you have more sug-gestions on other ways to recycle in the Village, please email [email protected], and I’ll write an addendum to this story.

Clubs and ActivitiesPHOTO CLUB

Fran DavidsonFrom the ‘helpful hints’ files of the SSV Photo

Club. you might try these hints this summer when taking photos of children-- 1) When taking pictures of newborns (since it’s not known how much the bright light might disturb them) work by available light. Indoors, during the day, have a parent hold the infant near a window without placing the child in the harsh direct sunlight. Take photos up close of just the cradled infant, and also take some pictures from a greater distance showing the child and the proud parent. Be very careful with infants. Don’t prop them up or leave them unattended on a table while trying to take a photograph – even for a second. So they won’t be frightened, put the camera down every 30 seconds or so, and talk to the subject to offer reassurance.

2) Try to take candid photos of kids while they are involved in some activity, so they’re unaware of your presence. Use a fast shutter speed to freeze action, and don’t ask them to pose. It’s possible to interrupt an activity and say, “Look at me for a sec-ond,” or “Hey, look this way,” when the child is in the midst of an activity, but don’t ask them, or expect them, to hold a pose.

3) One of the most common mistakes when tak-ing pictures of kids is taking the photo from too high an angle. Get down low for the most effective camera angle. Taking the photograph from a high elevation means we’re looking down at the child. From a low angle, the child looks more imposing in the scene, and that’s always a good thing. For a toddler’s first steps, the lower the camera is, the more exciting the photograph will be.

4) As with all photographs, try to get in close to the subject, avoid distracting backgrounds, and watch out for clutter anywhere in the photograph.

Try these hints out and share your photos with us when our meetings start back up this fall on Monday’s in the Superstition Room at 1pm. Fran Davidson-SSV Photo Club

SHUFFLEBOARD NEWSLouis Furtaw

The SSV Shuffleboard Club started their “Summer Shuffle-boarders Invitational” the first week of May. The club has invited shuf-flers from the surrounding com-munities to join them on Monday and Wednesday evenings during the summer months.

We have eight boards that have lighting available for evening play. The opening evening was a great success, as all eight boards were filled, and a great time was had by all. This is intended to give the SSV club the opportunity to build rela-

tionships with other East Valley shufflers, as well as promote our community and facility. If any residents are interested in learning more about shuffleboard and joining us, all

you have to do is come by the courts any Monday or Wednesday at 6:30 PM and ask for Bill Iverson or Louis Furtaw. We will get you started.

SSV SOFTBALL CLUBLinda Graszow

Welcome to June; it’s officially summer now and the heat is on! The SSV Softball Club has already wound down most scheduled activities for the season. We want to remind our fans/sup-porters that the Softball Club continues sales of soda pop and snacks at all Thursday evening Bingo games, begin-ning when Auditorium doors open around 5:30 p.m. and ending after intermission.

Proceeds raised for the Softball Club treasury are used toward softball field up-keep and team(s) equipment, etc. We’ve been able to make substantial improvements and upgrades to our ball field facility as an outcome of our fundraising efforts. Your generous assistance to make our varied fund-raisers suc-cessful is greatly appreciated throughout the year!

Speaking of fund-rais-

ers, next season we plan to reprise our now legendary series of Pancake Breakfasts and our annual Hamburger Feast. To properly thank the SSV community at large, we will also conduct our third an-nual Community Fun Day in November 2010. Stay tuned for all of the pertinent details as we approach our autumn season.

Thanks to the following additional member of the Softball Club Board, re-elect-ed in March (besides yours truly): Paul Hensley (ground-skeeper--a BIG job!). Our past presidents, Dick Paulin and Rex Smith, also deserve a commendation, as do Dave Chase and Larry Selear for spearheading our major fund-raisers (and agreeing to do so again in 2010-2011).

Open practices for SSV residents/Softball Club mem-bers/authorized guests are held at 7 AM Saturdays at the

SSV softball field during the summer months, through the end of September. We also continue to recruit women for the SSV Scorpions (ladies’) team; practices will com-mence in the fall and league play runs January through early March. If interested, please contact assistant man-ager Barb Pointer at 393-3814 for details.

We are publicizing our field usage policy for SSV residents/homeowners’ and their guests only (not ap-plicable for organized teams not authorized/recognized by the SSV Softball Club). Residents who wish to re-serve the softball field for their personal use should call Rex Smith at 380-8544 for reservations. Reservations are available on a non-inter-ference basis with existing teams’ playing schedules throughout the season.

WANTED: Ladies Who Want To Play Softball

Linda Granzow, Coordinator of Team Promotion, SSV Softball Club Have you ever played softball? Would you like to join a fun league? Would you like

to enjoy exercise and “fun in the Arizona sun” while experiencing a feeling of accomplish-ment? Or, how about forming new friendships forged in the true spirit of teamwork? The Sunland Springs Village Softball Club has a team with an open slot just for you!

As demonstrated in our last league season, we are in the throes of establishing a win-ning record -- but we cannot continue in our winning ways without YOUR help, ladies. Please call Barb Pointer at 393-3814 for more information. All Sunland Springs Resident ballplayers and ballplayer “wanna-be’s” are welcome to join at any time. We especially need experienced players and pitchers, or anyone who is interested in learning how to pitch.

SSV COMPUTER CLUB

Couples 18-Hole Golf LeagueDick Gebhart

It’s May 1 and many of the couples have returned to their homes up north. The Couples 18-Hole Golf League will continue playing Friday mornings during the summer months. Please check the bulletin board at the Club House to sign up to play and for announcements regarding the starting time.

Starting May 1, the new officers are Janine and Jim Mullinnix, President; Mary and Ron Knies, Vice President; Shirley and Dick Gebhart, Secretary; Trudy and Bill Ramer, Treasurer; Mary Lou and Seth Taylor, Tournament; and Sharon and Gary Keech, Rules. If you are interested in becoming more involved with the Couples Golf League, feel free to contact any member of the present board. Couples Golf League is a fun group and new members and new ideas are always welcome.

By Jane E. Harrel, [email protected]

Yes, Computer Club is still meeting on the first and third Wednesday of each month through Sep-tember. In the summer, no dues are collected, no

attendance is taken, and we don’t conduct any of those boring business meetings. We just have fun. Here is what we have scheduled for June (but they may be subject to change):

June 9: Comparing Internet Browsers

June 23: eReaders, eB-ooks – Jane Harrel

We are always looking for program ideas, so if there is something you want to learn or investigate, please advise and we will have a meeting on the subject.

ALL SSV RESIDENTS TAKE NOTICE: Do you have some VHS tapes that you would like to convert to

DVDs? Contact Jane

Harrel (480-214-5264) to borrow the Club’s dubbing machine. It is an easy process, and all it takes is the time to play the tape so it can record to a new, blank DVD. Kathy Anderson has been converting the VHS tapes in the library to DVDs, so check some out to see how good it can be.

Whether you are a new beginner to com-puters or have years of experience, there is al-ways something to learn at Computer Club. We meet Wednesdays at 10 AM in the Superstition Room. See you there.

Be good to your body and be kind to yourself this summer, come to YOGA. Wear comfortable clothing to move in, and we do yoga in our barefeet!

We meet in the Auditorium at 8:30 – 10:00 AM (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). The cost is $3.50.

10 June 2010 Sunland Springs Village Voice

From the BoardSunland Spring Village Homeowners AssociationMonthly Meeting April 27, 2010 SSV Auditorium

The meeting was called to order by John Lippert, Manager of the HOA through Rossmar & Graham, at 9:35 AM after dis-tributing to the audience a copy of the Master Association finan-cial report for the period ended March 31, 2010. Jeff Decker, Vice President of the Master Association Board of Directors and Farnsworth Homes, attended with Jane Harrel as recording secretary.

In reviewing the financial report, Mr. Lippert drew attention to the Assets, noting total Reserve Funds of almost $800,000, and that there would be a reserve study done this summer. He also noted the $8,792 in maintenance fees received, which were due to collections of past due accounts. Seven homes have not paid with three of these in foreclosure, one in collection with Rossmar and the remaining three have an unknown status. The Working Capital income is down but Transfer Fee income is up. The Activity Account income reflects the 2011 Concert Series ticket sales.

Expenses were under budget for the most part. Rossmar & Graham did not pay New Creations Landscaping its monthly maintenance fee for its March maintenance as their insurance pa-pers were out of date, which has been rectified. Replacement of the projection screen in the auditorium was necessary as was a planer in the woodshop, half the expense was paid by the Woodshop. A year’s worth of propane was pre-purchased at $1.74 per gallon. The pre-emergence weed killer applied earlier in the year was washed away by the storm of January 21, 2010. The landscapers are work-ing hard to rid the beds of weeds and replenish the plantings that were damaged, and add more crushed rock in the median. There was heavy use of oil by spring break visitors causing a film on the grout of the spa and pool. The grout was redone by maintenance. The microphone interference problem detected at February’s annual meeting has been resolved.

Questions, comments, and concerns from the audience followed:

• How do you decide which items are charged to the reserve funds and which are maintenance?

• Those that are part of the reserve study are paid from re-serves. The storm damage was paid from the Reserves because

it was a large extraordinary unplanned expense.Jeff Decker reported that new home sales have doubled

over last year. Twelve closings in March and the same number in April, with one scheduled for May.

Work is proceeding on the new development of Phase 7 at the south end of the development between Wattlewood and Cop-perwood but north of Guadalupe. There will be 82 home sites, 27 of which have been pre-reserved, but it will be a year before homes will be ready for residents.

The perimeter block wall between northwest SSV and the Walgreen’s parking log was run into by a truck. It will be repaired very quickly.

• Will Guadalupe be put through to Meridian?o No, but a new street (New Castle) will connect Springwood

Blvd. to Wattlewood. He also explained the Siphon Draw project that is being constructed on the east side of the subdivision.

• Why does the basin north of the flag pole fill with water?o Mr. Decker said the basin is designed as a retention basin

to catch overflow for the system of golf course ponds. He then explained how the north lake feeds the pond beside it, which feeds the middle lake and thus in turn feeds the south lake.

• Can there be more handicapped parking space at the auditorium?

o Mr. Lippert will check into how this could be done.• Have the swarm of bees been exterminated?o The exterminator told Mr. Lippert that bees have a keen

sense of smell, and can tell is a swarm has resided in a particular area before.

• Are the prices of the new homes going up?o Mr. Decker stated that the incentives will stop April 30,

2010. All prospective buyers have been made aware of this • Does the City take care of the weeds in the sidewalks?o Mr. Lippert said that the City does not but our landscap-

ing company does. It is the home owner’s responsibility if not on common area.

There being no further business to come before the Associa-tion, the meeting adjourned at 10:02 AM.Respectfully submitted, Jane E. Harrel, Recording Secretary
