How to use your food caddy

We are making changes to the way your food waste is collected from your flats so that you can recycle more.

How do I get more liners? Please only use compostable liners with the seedling logo (below) as these will break down to make compost. You can buy more 5 litre compostable liners from

local shops and supermarkets – view a list of stockists on our website www.bathnes.gov.uk/foodwaste Online offers are often the cheapest visit www.getcomposting.com You can also use newspaper to wrap your food waste or line your caddy.

Please do not put food waste in your rubbish sack but use your kitchen caddy instead.

Your outside food waste bin is near your existing recycling bins. We will empty this bin every week.

What we will give youTo enable you to separate your food waste easily from the rest of your rubbish we will give you:

1. Line your kitchen caddy with a compostable liner (bag) or newspaper. Do not use plastic bags as they will not break down to make compost.

2. Put all your food waste into your caddy.

3. Before it gets too full, tie up the liner or roll up the newspaper and drop it off in your communal outside food waste bin on your way out.

• Remember to tie up your liners to stop food spilling.

• Empty your caddy regularly to prevent any smell.

• Scrape uneaten food straight into your caddy.

• If you run out of liners you can use newspaper to line the caddy carefully. Or you can wrap your food waste ‘fish and chip’ style.

Why are we collecting your food waste separately?Food leftovers and peelings make up about a third of household rubbish in Bath and North East Somerset. The food waste we collect is taken for processing locally and recycled into compost to use on farmland and used to make renewable energy. It is also much cheaper for the Council to process food waste into compost than send it to landfill or other specialist treatment.
