May 14, 2017-Fifth Sunday of Easter Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Tears often flow in departure scenes at airports, train stations and bus terminals as loved ones come to the unwelcome dreaded moment of “goodbye.” One of the oft-forgotten joys of dwelling in eternity will be the de-cisive end of such scenes and no more “goodbyes.” Why? Because eternal means “never-ending.” For the hand-picked Twelve who formed Christ’s original entourage, these post-Easter days were so full of joy that none of them wanted such times to come to an end. Can we blame them? Six weeks in the company of the risen Jesus! All the gloom of Good Friday gone. All their doubts about Jesus’ return destroyed. All their hopes for the future reinforced, even though that future was, like all futures, to be determined. Then there came that day and time when Jesus put an end to it all by saying “I am going to the Father.” If there were a soundtrack provided for that moment, it would have been something like a thunderclap or the loud bang of a drum. Not that Jesus hadn’t said those words before His Passion and Death; not that He hadn’t warned the Apostles that His earthly stay had an endpoint. It’s just that they, like us, often fell under the spell of wishful thinking. But if, as St. Peter wrote in his letter, we are a “chosen race, a royal priesthood and a people set apart” then an element of our makeup has to be a realistic appraisal of our situation replacing any daydreams. Nostalgia is fine in its place but we cannot linger there or wish for a return to the past in every detail. As a Church, we have to be focused on the here and now while at the same time being loyal to Tradition. Jesus only left the Twelve (and us) in His physical Body. His promise was to be “with us ’til the end of time”. How He does it is up to Him. We should thank Him for His promise. Meanwhile, we have our mission: to make Jesus known by our preaching, with St. Francis’ reminder that we are to use words only when necessary. Our good example is our best sermon. While we think about this, there is, of course, another side to the coin. Call it “bad example.” Such can steer an onlooker the wrong way every time. Here is an example from everyday life. Forget about today’s cable technol-ogy to get the point. Once there was a TV repairman who didn’t like to think about his job when he came home. As a result, he never bothered to properly install the TV antenna on the top of his house, or fix it when one arm broke in a windstorm. One day a new family moved in next door, and the owner went up on his roof to install an antenna. Knowing that his neighbor was a TV repairman, he put his up exactly the same way and turned his antenna to face in the same direction as his neighbor’s. Then, after studying his neighbor’s antenna for a while, he reached up and broke one arm off his new antenna!’ As disciples, living with Jesus, we teach by example, whether we intend to or not. First Reading: Acts 6:1-7 The mission of the nascent Church begins to spread outward from Jerusalem. Seven Hellenists (Greek-speaking Jews) are chosen by the community for service to widows needing food and support. Second Reading: I Peter 2:4-9 Peter exhorts the new community to live as a “spiritual house.” He then applies to them four Old Testament ti-tles of Israel: chosen; royal; priest; people of God. Gospel: John 14:1-12 Jesus promises His Apostles places in “the Father’s house.” Thomas and Philip question Jesus, and He answers both men, and promises them new powers.
