Weekly Calendar Rector’s Corner

This week concludes our Lenten Homily series on the Seven Capital Sins.

The Divine Longing for Well-Being "In uniting yourself to God's will, you take on new life and gather great courage, willingly embracing the cross and kissing His hand. . . , a hand that reaches out to you in love and has no other intention but your greater spiritual well-being" - St. Paul of the Cross (Popcak, Broken Gods, Ch. 9).

We wish to be well, to thrive. It can be hard to balance so many different aspects of being well. Where does this divine longing for well-being come from? The Garden of Eden was a place of peace with God, with everything in its right order. With original sin we lost both an internal sense of peace as well as order in the external realm.

Gluttony is a distortion of the divine longing for well-being. "It prevents us from living mindfully by substituting self-indulgence for self-care and by thwarting our call to be truly loving and accepting our bodies as the gift they are” (Popcak, Ch. 9). Our inner hunger for peace can lead to emotional eating, resulting in overeating. It can also lead to a type of super vigilant care about what we eat called "preciousness."

Temperance is the ability to pursue every good thing in a healthy way, helping us to achieve balance. Temperance asks the question, “What do I really need?" Mindfulness is temperance in action. Grace allows us awareness of the present moment, and puts us in touch with the parts of ourselves that really need God's help. "For it is not in the food of the belly, that we have heard good to be situated" (St. Clement of Alexandria, quoted in Manual for Conquering Deadly Sin, TAN).

Divine Longing for Communion "I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one. . . The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one." - John 17:20-21

We are created in communion. This need is so deep that babies—if not held, touched and loved—can develop a failure to thrive, refusing food to the point of starvation. God's deep heart calls forth the deepest part of our hearts. He provides us an icon of His love in the sacrament of marriage, a lasting communion between man and woman. In marriage man and woman are to live a free, total, faithful, and fruitful love and so "experience a taste of the immense bounty of love God has in store for them in the heav-enly communion that will supersede marriage” (Popcak, Ch. 10). Fifth Sunday of Lent

Nosotros queremos estar bien, queremos prosperar.
