ĒRIKA TEIRUMNIEKA, Project manager

Rezekne Academy of Technologies (RTA) welcomes Latvia`s Centenary with new 0achievements in the fields of study, research, innovations, and infrastructure modernisation. One of the objectives of the RTA is to provide the necessary labour for the economic growth of Latgale, Latvia and Europe, as well as encourage new specialists to engage with science and research. To achieve it, STEM-oriented (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programmes: academic Master`s study programme “Laser Technologies”, first level professional higher education study programme “Mechanical Engineering”, and professional Bachelor`s study programme “Mechatronics” are being upgraded.

From March 2018, the RTA implements the project “Modernisation of Study Programmes in Laser Technologies, Mechatronics, and Mechanical Engineering at Rezekne Academy of Technologies” of the specific aid objective 8.1.1. “To Increase the Number of Modernised STEM Study programmes, Including in the Fields of Medicine and Creative Industry” within the operational programme “Growth and Employment”, the agreement on the implementation of the EU fund project No.8.1.1.0/17/I/011. The cooperation body of the project is Central Finance and Contracting Agency of the Republic of Latvia. The estimated cost of the project is EUR 964917.00, to which ERAF will contribute 85% and 15% is financed by the state budget. The estimated implementation period of the project is less than 10 months- from 16 March 2018 until 31 December 2018.

Currently, new machinery, equipment, materials, and instruments for work with laser technology are being purchased and later will be allocated in the building of the Physical Processes and Laser Technologies Research Centre, which is currently under construction, and for mechanical engineering and metalworking, part of which will be allocated in the existing laboratories. New computers, WEB conference equipment, and data storage systems have already been

installed. All that enables to improve the quality of study process and to achieve excellence in research and innovations. The construction of the centre building, which will be located on the RTA Campus between the existing facilities K1 and K2, is in full swing.

The project is a base for future growth, including the development of studies and research, as well as for strengthening cooperation with partners in laser technology field, both in Latvia and abroad.

RTA Public Relations Department

On 7th November, with aim to inform students and academic staff of Rezekne Academy of Technologies (RTA) about opportunities provided by the Erasmus+ mobility programmes and encourage to participate in them, RTA organized the event which also offered insight into the rich diversity of the RTA students and Diwali, the festival of lights, which is celebrated in India and around the world. Diwali is the festival to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

The hosts of the event: Santa Gricāne (Latvia), head of International Relations, Student Council, student

at the study programme “Applied Communication and Translation” and Jesus Moreno Quesada (Spain), volunteer at the Erasmus+ programme, did their best to create vigorous atmosphere.

The first part of the event was

devoted to the presentations of the RTA`s students. Zane Grāvīte (Latvia), student at the study programme Social Pedagogue, shared her Erasmus+ experience and told the audience about her studies at VIA University Collage in Denmark revealing not only the differences in the study process, but also her own observations on Danish lifestyle. The student`s presentation was followed by the fun game Fruit Salad, during which Jesus Moreno managed to stir up the participants of the event.

After that everyone was invited to the Art Terrace where Indian students offered to try delicious dish- manna pudding. In the relaxed and light-hearted atmosphere, Indian students answered questions and gave insight into Indian culture and traditions.

Having partaken of the sweet and nutritious dish, everyone gathered in the hall to listen to the rest of the presentations. French students gave a brief insight into French culture and introduced to the University of Saint-Nazaire. Turkish representative showed a video revealing the diversity and beauty of his country and invited everyone to visit Turkey to get to know it.

The presentation of Pakistan began with a call to stand up because, in showing respect

for their country, the students played the national anthem before their story. The audience learned not only many general, geographical, and historical facts about Pakistan, but also gained information about Pakistani dishes and famous personalities.

The first part of the event ended with a presentation by Indian students during which not only general and historical facts were revealed, for example, that the world`s first university was established in Takshila (India) in 700b.c., but also information about Indian national symbols was provided. Furthermore, a cartoon about Diwali was demonstrated, revealing the traditions of the festival.

After the presentations everyone was invited to the yard of the academy to light up candles and, in accordance with Diwali traditions, arrange them in rows. The atmosphere of Diwali was emphasized by a rangoli design created by Indian students. Rangoli is a traditional Indian ornament in which patterns are created on the floor or the ground using materials such as coloured rice, dry flour, coloured sand, or flower petals. During the event, a traditional Indian dance was demonstrated.

The event went down a storm and revealed the international atmosphere at the RTA.

In the 13th century, the German crusaders destroyed it and built the Livonian Order stone castle (Rositten). The castle was located in a strategically important place; therefore, the Russians, Lithuanians, Poles and Swedes were seeking to conquer it, until the castle was destroyed in the 17th century during the Polish-Swedish War.

LATGALES MĀRA- the monument “United for Latvia” is the most recognizable symbol of Rezekne (location- Atbrīvošanas aleja, near Rezekne City Council).

In 1939, a monument to Latvian unity was erected in Rezekne. Twice felled down by the Soviets, but re-erected in 1992 after the liberation of Latvia, the monument has come to symbolize the historically rich and culturally complex eastern reaches of Latvia. It represents the efforts the nation has undertaken to rebuild and protect our country.

LASER TECHNOLOGY - a bridge between higher education institutions of Latvia and Bulgaria

RTA Public Relations Department

At the end of October and at the beginning of November, a group of students from Bulgaria visited Rezekne Academy of Technologies (RTA) and worked at the RTA Laser Technology Laboratory increasing their knowledge and conducting practical research.

On 7 November, the students presented their research “Laser Marking Technology for Civil and Military Products” informing the audience about the aims of the research, progress, and results achieved.

At the beginning of their presentation, Bulgarian students from the Vasil Levski National Military University (Националeн военен yниверситет „Васил Левски”) thanked the RTA for cooperation and opportunity to visit Latvia and work at the RTA laboratories. The students studied opportunities of laser marking, laser cutting, and laser engraving on different materials. They could also make tokens for themselves and partner-universities.

It should be noted that the

students had no previous experience with laser technology which further demonstrates the RTA`s contribution to international cooperation in the field of student exchange and research and efforts not only in the development of the RTA`s students but also those from partner-universities.

Prof. Dr.sc.ing., Leading Researcher of the RTA Physical Processes and Laser Technologies Research Centre, Lyubomir Lazov, noted that the successful two-week cooperation was possible thanks to financing provided by the Ministry of Defense of Bulgaria. He also welcomed the students` untiring efforts while working on the study.

One of the objectives of the study was to make the logo of the Vasil Levski National Military University. The students successfully managed this task in cooperation with the RTA staff, and one copy of the logo was presented to the RTA as gratitude for the opportunity to train in the contemporary laser technology and as the confirmation of the

intention of further cooperation.

Representative of the Vasil Levski National Military University, Manager of the Project BG05M20P001-2.009-0001, Phd. Engineer, Assistant Professor, Nikolai Todorov Dolchinkov (Николай Тодоров Долчинков) works at the Vasil Levski National Military University Civil Defense Department. His activities relate to radiation security and emergency situations. In addition, he is actively involved in organization of extra-curricular activities at the university. N.Todorov Dolchinkov also gives lectures at Moscow Energy Institute since 2017.

The cooperation partner noted that projects within Erasmus and Horizon 2020 were developed along with Professor L.Lazov during the last year and work would continue in this direction in the future.

Referring to the cooperation, Professor L.Lazov revealed that in the framework of the Erasmus programme the both higher education institutions are planning to develop a project for a joint master’s study programme, but, given that one

of the cooperation institutions is a military university, agreement with the Ministry of Defense is required, therefore the process to approve the study programme is more complicated, however, a framework agreement has already been signed between the RTA and the Vasil Levski National Military University, which has already been approved by the Ministry of Defense.

“It means that we have been given the green light for successful cooperation in the next years. Our students have already been in Gabrovo and Veliko Tarnovo and are satisfied with their experience. In my opinion, there is a good exchange between the two universities.

Students from the RTA Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes also participated in this work, so it could be said that to some extent this is a joint work of students from Latvia and Bulgaria,” said L.Lazov.

At the end of the visit, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Ērika Teirumnieka, and the guests discussed the opportunities of further cooperation in the field of information technology and common areas of scientific work.

5

While visiting laboratories at the faculty of Engineering, Mr. Seong-Jin Han with particular interest listened to Pāvels Cacivkins, laboratory assistant at the Physical Processes and Laser Technologies Research Centre (RTA), who told the guests about the RTA`s purposeful work in the fields of mechatronics, 3D, and laser technology.

Presenting the chemistry laboratories of the RTA, Ērika Teirumnieka, dean of the Faculty of Engineering, gave an

insight into the collaboration between the RTA and entrepreneurs, stressing commissioned work implemented by the RTA students.

Mr. Seong-Jin Han welcomed the RTA`s performance and students` achievements and discussed possible further collaboration between the Republic of Korea and the RTA in the field of education, especially in the area of engineering and ICT.

I come from India, from beautiful city Chandigarh.

I study laser technology as it`s beneficial for me in the future, I`m more interested in it, and my bachelor studies were in aeronautics. I can combine them both in the future, because the future depends on aircrafts and laser.

I skipped over catalogues for some good universities and found RTA, and decided to come for my master studies. I study at RTA for the second year and I am satisfied with my choice.

I like winter. When it was -250C, I loved that!

As for the future, I am going to return to India after studies, but you never know what can happen in the future. That`s life!

What is it like to study in Rezekne? Find out from our students!

We asked some of our international students to share their views of RTA experience. Each one of our students has a different story. That’s why we asked a few of them to tell us about their experiences – why they chose Rezekne, what they’ve learned, and what advice they would give to you.

When I was little my English teacher recognized my ability to learn language. We were having German and English lectures, and she told me that I needed to improve my English as far as

possible. So I decided to be in language courses, and it brought me to English teaching. And here I am, in Latvia, learning English from Latvian teachers.

I come from the city with 13 million people. Rezekne is small, the serenity and small population here make me happy, because there are no traffic jams, there is no noise, it`s a small peaceful place for me, so I like it.

I had three options: Germany, Poland, or Latvia. I wanted to experience real winter, because winter is my favourite season.

I wanted to be close to the Scandinavian countries, therefore Latvia was my choice. I can go to Germany any time I want, I have relatives there, and Poland was not so interesting for me.

So far, my experience here has been positive, because the staff is really qualified, we have had small number of classes, but the efficiency was really good, so I would like to thank you for the Erasmus experience.

My best friend here is a Latvian. He is a programmer. We met on the first night in the dorms.

They said Latvians were like Russians, they were cold-hearted, you need to break some barriers, but that`s a cliché. He was really nice, we really get connected in the first week, and so far we are best friends. Locals help us. We had to find a school for practice, and I did not know the address. Our keyboards are different from Latvian, so we couldn`t find it on Google Maps, and a Latvian girl helped to get there. I was really thankful. Just imagine, you are a stranger in the street, you ask a person the address and they just help you, with sincerity.

Alpay Recai Orta, Istanbul, Turkey Faculty of Education, Languages, and Design, English language teacher, Erasmus programme

In Pakistan I earned Bachelor`s in Information Technology, and my major is in programming languages and networking. My current course Computer Systems is totally based on my previous studies, therefore I chose this programme.

I can say only positive things about the academy. The staff is very helpful.

I came here a month ago, and I have heard from others that it might get very cold in winter here. It is very difficult for me, but OK.

I would recommend RTA to other students, because it`s a state university and globally recognised, there are many opportunities, and RTA implements students exchange programme.

Muhammad Qasim Butt, PakistanFaculty of Engineering, Master study programme Computer Systems

Victor Quarello, Renne, France Faculty of Economics and Management, Erasmus programme

In France I study in Saint Nazaire. In future I would like to establish my own enterprise, therefore I decided to study economics.

I chose Latvia because I wanted new experience. There were some other countries like Spain, England, but they are very close to France, and I wanted to go far away from my city, friends, and

parents to get new adventure.

Rezekne differs from France. It is a little bit difficult for us, because it is not the same like France, for example, the dormitories, but that`s OK, because it is really cheap to travel and live here, we can have fun being here, and we are going to see Sigulda.

I would recommend the academy

to other students, it`s very good. The professors are very good, they speak good English, I can improve my English. And lectures are good as well.

When the weather is good, we take a walk around the city or sometimes to the lake. I make my own radio, it takes my time, too.

Gurkirat Singh, India Faculty of Engineering, Bachelor study programme Mechatronics.

I`m interested in designing and study mechatronics at RTA for the second year. The teaching staff is very helpful. You can go and ask any question and they will help

you. I have recommended RTA to many friends, and they also came here.

I like here very much, I have nice

friends. I spend my leisure time with friends- international and local students, we go to clubs or just simply around the city.

Risham, India Faculty of Engineering, Master study programme Laser Technology
