Overview

The Recovery Simulator is a tool used to test the integrity of Disaster Recovery backups made withCristie BMR, EMC Avamar, EMC NetWorker, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager or IBM Spectrum Protectin conjunction with Cristie ABMR/CBMR/NBMR/TBMR Windows 7.3.1 and later, Cristie ABMR/CBMR/NBMR/TBMR Linux 7.3.1 and later, TBMR 7.3.1 for Linux PPC and TBMR 7.3.1 for AIX. Itdoes this by running an automated restore of the backup to one of the supported virtual environmentsVMware vSphere, vCloud, Microsoft Hyper-V, Microsoft Azure, IBM VIOS and IBM TSM for VE.

Current limitations

i) Recovery Simulator is not supported on Windows 'Core' systems.

ii) IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)/Spectrum Protect backupset recovery simulations are notsupported. However image backups are.

iii) IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)/Spectrum Protect encrypted backups are not supported.

iv) EMC NetWorker encrypted backups are not supported. However password protectedbackups are.

v) Post-boot script support for Linux test systems is only available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux6/7 and Suse Linux Enterprise Standard 11/12 distributions.

vi) When running EMC Avamar based simulations on Windows or Linux systems the hardwaremust be pre-configured in the target VM as Recovery Simulator cannot access the backup atthis time.

vii) When running EMC NetWorker based simulations there may be an IP address conflict withthe original source machine if it is active at the time of the recovery.

viii) If you opt to boot a restored VM there may be an IP address conflict with the original sourcemachine if it is currently active. Please change the VM's hostname and IP address using Advanced Configuration before you start the simulation test if this is likely to occur. This doesnot apply to NBMR recoveries where the original IP address must always be used in therecovery (see limitation above).

ix) Cristie Spectrum Protect backups can only be recovered to a VMware vSphere environment.

x) Only ABMR, CBMR and TBMR recoveries are supported to Microsoft Azure clouds.

xi) Only ABMR, CBMR and TBMR recoveries are supported to Amazon Web Services EC2clouds.

xii) Where supported only Windows 2008 R2 and later OS's are supported to Microsoft Azureand Amazon Web Services EC2 clouds.

xiii) Only TBMR 7.3.1 for AIX and TBMR 7.3.1 for Linux PPC recoveries are supported to IBMVIOS™ Hypervisors.

xiv) For Linux Intel only the recovered system must have an active network at boot for any post-recovery scripts to run.

xv) Recovery Simulator doesn’t currently support Post Recovery functionality in conjunction withEFI(GPT) BIOS based source systems on Microsoft Azure targets.

xvi) Recovery Simulator will provision a new virtual machine as BIOS(MBR) boot, regardless ofthe boot type of the source system.

Requirements

i) Only supports Cristie BMR, EMC Avamar, EMC NetWorker, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager orIBM Spectrum Protect backups configured to use Cristie ABMR/CBMR/NBMR/TBMRWindows 7.3.1 and later and Cristie ABMR/CBMR/NBMR/TBMR Linux 7.3.1 and later.

ii) Only supports IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)/Spectrum Protect backups configured touse TBMR 7.3.1 for Linux PPC/TBMR 7.3.1 for AIX for IBM VIOS™ Hypervisor targets.

iii)Supported virtual environments are VMware vSphere, vCloud, Microsoft Hyper-V, MicrosoftAzure, IBM VIOS and IBM TSM for VE.

iv) Ensure a DHCP server is available in the target VM environment to enable the created VMsto obtain an IP address on boot and perform the scheduled recovery test.

v) The Recovery Simulator can be hosted on Windows 7, 8.1, Server 2008 (including R2) andServer 2012 (also including R2). Both 32 and 64-bit versions are supported where applicable.

vi) The Recovery Simulator can test recoveries of any Windows OS supported by Cristie ABMR/CBMR/NBMR/TBMR Windows 7.3.1 and later.

6

Recovery Simulator 5.1 - Readme

vii)The Recovery Simulator can test recoveries of any Linux OS supported by Cristie ABMR/CBMR/NBMR/TBMR Linux 7.3.1 and later.

viii) If Oracle JRE v1.8.0_40 is not detected on the host system, it will be installed automaticallyduring installation.

ix) The minimum supported version of IBM TSM for VE is 7.1.

x) Requires version 7.3.2 of TBMR to support Cristie Spectrum Protect mode recoveries.

xi) To support IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)/Spectrum Protect recovery simulations theIBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)/Spectrum Protect Administrator client and Backup-Archiveclient must be installed. Similarly to support EMC NetWorker simulations, an appropriateEMC NetWorker backup client must be installed and to support EMC Avamar simulations, anappropriate EMC Avamar client must be installed. Note that at least one of these clients mustbe installed prior to installing Recovery Simulator or it will not be possible to install.

Refer to the Cristie ABMR/CBMR/NBMR/TBMR Windows 7.3.1 and later and Cristie ABMR/CBMR/NBMR/TBMR Linux 7.3.1 and later product documentation for an exact list ofsupported backup product client/server versions. Cristie Software Ltd. recommends using theIBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)/Spectrum Protect client version 6.4.0.x (minimum version6.2.0.0), the EMC NetWorker 9.0 client (as a minimum use a version to match the version ofthe EMC NetWorker server containing the backups used for simulation tests) and the EMCAvamar client version 6.1.101 (minimum version 6.0.100).

xii)Supports Microsoft Azure as available to end users in April 2016 and later. RecoverySimulator only supports the recovery of Windows 2008 R2, 2012 and 2012 R2 to MicrosoftAzure.

xiii)Supports the cloning of Linux RHEL/Centos 6.4/6.5/7 x86/x64 and SLES 11 SP3 and SP4SLES 12 x64 only to Microsoft Azure. Note only systems that are booted from the first diskare supported.

xiv) About 70 MB of free disk space is required to install the Recovery Simulator package.

xv) The Recovery Simulator needs certain TCP/UDP ports to be added as exceptions to thesystem firewall if active. This will be done as part of the Recovery Simulator installationprocess.

xvi) A minimum of 2GB RAM size is required on the test VM for recovery to be successful.

Known Issues

i) It is not possible to specify external drives (e.g. USB disks) for loading drivers duringdissimilar hardware preparation.
