The Oscar money for best song this year is on "The Shadow of Your Smile" from"The Sandpiper" and here is that tune with an exciting Joe Sherman arrangement(Amy 948). Chance's chances are extremely good to hit with his version of theBeatles' ditty, "I'm Looking Through You" (Roulette 4664).

Another album of beautiful music from Harry Belafonte is out this week. This timehe's teamed with Greece's leading songstress, Nana Mouskouri. They chant, togetherand solo, lovely Greek tunes. The meeting officially startedFriday, Jan. 14, at 9 a.m. withbreakfast, although the grouphad actually arrived through-out Thursday. Leonard Chesswelcomed the distributors at 10a.m., thanking the body forthe banner year (since the ori-gin of the company), 1965.Leonard Chess introduced hisbrother, Phil Chess, who alsowelcomed the group and gavehis thanks for the biggest yearto date. Established Trust RelationshipLabel's Dick LaPalm spoke

LaPalm introduced MarshallChess and Paul Gayten whomade brief remarks followedby individual distributor meet-

A fashion show was held atpoolside for the ladies whilethe men were in the meeting.

New Order DebutsWith Pucci Galore
Famed Italian Designer OutfittingSinging Group for Mexico Gigs
B1 DANE FIN hl L
NEW YORK - New singinggroups are formed every day.( The statistic would probablybe both staggering and fright-ening.) And new groups makea first public appearance everyday.
But no new group has evermade its first public appear-ance as auspiciously as theNew Order, which had its firstrehearsals last week and thisweek is bowing to society at around of parties in Acapulco-one of which is a yacht partytossed by movie star MerleOberon.
And to boot, when the fel-lows first step on stage, theywill be attired in clothes de-signed by world famous Italiandesigner, Emilio Pucci, who in-sisted on having the fellowsentertain at his Mexico show-ings. (These will be Pucci'sfirst designs for men. Hisclothes for women are usuallycolorfully patterned silk num-bers. Prepare, tradesters, foryet more new bags.)
Formed by Songwriters
So it might reasonably beasked (as have a few deftlyplaced teaser ads recently),who is the New Order? TheNew Order is a sixsome (nolabel contract yet) formed bysongwriters Bobby Weinsteinand Billy Barberis, who re-cently parted amicably fromSouth Mountain pubbery wherethey had written, with TeddyRandazzo, successful dittieslike "The Weekend," "So Fine,""Goin' Out of My Head," "HurtSo Bad," "On the OutsideLookin In," "Around the Cor-ner," "Have You Looked IntoYour Heart" and "Think ofYou," to name a few.
Barberis and Weinstein hada few ideas in their headsabout new sounds-technicallyand structurally-to give tosongs and they decided a groupof their own was the way towork the ideas into reality.
Gathered Up Musicians
So they gathered together anumber of musicians withwhom they had laid downsounds on disks they had pro-duced in the past. The mu-sicians are: Gerry McGee,Roger Joyce, Larry Taylor and
Lewis Williams. "We wantedthe best musicians we couldfind," Billy Barberis toldRecord World last week in themidst of rehearsal, "And theseguys are it."
Already the Barberis-Wein-stein team has composed andarranged a dozen new dittiespublished by their own Trip-pington house, which they pre-viewed for Record World. (Thereporter is sworn to secrecyabout titles and new wrinklesin new bags.)
Weinstein and Barberis havenot signed any recording dealsyet, because they want to bein the best possible bargainingposition when they do and soare waiting for Mexico word-of-mouth. They intend to write, arrange and produce all theircuts, and labels will be ableto hear the first masters a weekor two after TNG get backf r o m their break-in jaunt.(Some waxeries have alreadyexpressed interest in the sex-tet.)
The schedule for the Mexicotrip is as follows: The MerleOberon soiree, Wednesday, Jan.26; the Ambassador's ball Fri-day, Jan. 28; the Pucci FashionBall, Saturday, Jan. 29.
The entire weekend, inci-dentally, will be the basis ofan upcoming CBS TV docu-mentary.)
Continue Pucci LiaisonThe Pucci ball will not be
the last the fellows see of thedesigner. Pucci is just aboutto venture into the men's fash-ion line and wants to use TNOas his mannekins in an efiortto get to the teenage market. The fellows have also writtenthe jingle Pucci will use forall advertisements pushing hisnew perfume for women.
The New Order will alsowrite and sing commercialsfor a new line of collapsiblemotorcycles about to be intro-duced in the states.
In other words, for the NewOrder: many orders.
McNair LP OffNEW YORK - The planned
Motown recording of BarbaraMcNair "live" at the PersianRoom the other week was can-celled because of the transitstrike.
Jordan Christopher ChangesLocale, Image for Pic, LP
III' DOUG McULELLAN I)
NEW YORK - As of thisweek, there are two big eventsin Jordan Christopher's younglife (and wife "Syb," as hecalls her, makes three, ofcourse) :
1) he leaves for Spain to co-star in the important UnitedArtists color film, "The Returnof the Seven"; and
2) his first UA album sansthe Wild Ones, "Jordan Chris-topher Has the Knack," is be-ing released.
tit rung LP React ion
And, the label reports, thereis extremely strong distributorreaction to the new LP, which, incidentally, has liner notes byRoddy McDowall as well as astriking, Mc D owa 11 - photo-graphed cover photo of Jordanin which he resembles a Shake-spearean brooder. The latteris not inappropriate, since in-cluded in this homogeneouspackage is a song from theBard's "Twelfth Night" whichJordan delivers in a warmlymellow -fashion as "The Windand the Rain."
Acting is becoming increas-ingly important to Jordan, whose screen test of a "Seven"scene has UA execs excited. Al-ready being compared to thelate French act or GerardPhilippe, Christopher will playthe character created by HorstBuchholz in 1960's "The Mag-nificent Seven," to which his"Return of the Seven" is asequel. Yul Brynner is top -billed. (Jordan is also in theunreleased film, "The Fat Spy,"with the Wild Ones.)
"I have a three-year contractwith United Artists Pictures,"he said, "for four films. I don'tknow what the next one willbe. But the Mirisch Brothers, for whom I'm doing this one,are preparing the film of 'Howto Succeed in Business withoutReally Trying,' and whoknows . . .?"
Changing ImageAs a singer, Ohioan Jordan
is anxious to lose the purelyrock image he acquired withthe very English group -lookingWild Ones. (He did the UAalbum, "The Arthur Sound,"with them.) "I don't want tolose touch completely," headded. "But I have to do a lotmore. Rock, although I love it,is too limiting. It's not veryrewarding to keep plunkingout rock and roll songs aroundthe country. I want to better

myself as an entertainer, trya little bit of everything.
"I hate albums where thewhole thing sounds like thefirst cut."
His next single may well bethe exciting "Hello, Lover" cutfrom his "Knack" album.Gerry Granahan produced thepackage, and Arnold Golanda r r a n g e d and conducted,"beautifully," Christop heropined. He also plans a bookof his own drawings.
United Artists Records iskicking off 1966 with a con-certed "New Faces" drive,Jordan Christopher topping thelist of potential big stars. Hedoes indeed appear to have theknack.

AGAC Celebrates 35th Early NARM ReturnsReveal Biggest GrowthYear with Big Plans
NEW YORK-The AmericanGuild of Authors and Com-posers is marking its 35th an-niversary this year and RecordWorld wandered over to thelocal offices last week to findout what was in store in theway of celebration.
What was in store, and isin store, is a number of proj-ects, under President BurtonLane, in the continuing AGACcampaign for obtaining justiceand completely equal rightsfor songwriters.
The activities were discussedby AGAC Executive Vice Presi-dent Leonard Whitcup, councilmember Joe Meyer, GloriaShayne and Executive DirectorMiriam Stern, all of whomdescribed the upcoming yearin between reminiscences ofthe past 35.
The big AGAC push for 1966is the negotiation of a newpopular music contract. Theformulation of the new con-tract has been completed andthe Guild is just about readyto start conferring with theMusic Publishers' ProtectiveAssociation and other publish-ers.
Composer Over PublisherThe most significant feature
of the new contract is thatsong copyright would be in thename of the composer ratherthan the publisher. AGACpoints out that this situationin no way alters the publish-er's rights in handling a song, but that the gain for the com-poser is meaningful. A copy-right in the author's namemeans better bargaining posi-tion during copyright renewal, better bargaining position if apublisher is not exploiting atune to the composer's satis-faction, and, thirdly and (ina psychological way, the Guildfeels) perhaps most impor-tantly, the composer retainsthe pride of ownership.
The second most strikingclause in the new contract isthe "option agreement." Itwould stipulate that no con -
Joseph Meyer, veteran writer("California Here I Come,"etc.), and Gloria Shayne, youngwriter ("The Men in My LittleGirl's Life," etc.), are AGACmembers. Meyer is on ExecCouncil.
tract goes into effect until apublisher obtains a recordingof a song. Until that time theinterested publisher options asong for six months and canreoption a tune for additionalsix-month periods for a $250non -returnable a d v a n c e. Athird important feature of thenew contract is the right forAGAC to conduct auditing atforeign sources.
In addition to the pop songwriters revised contract, AGAChas begun work on a standardcontract for serious music.Heretofore there has been none, and the guild feels it's hightime.
After New MembersAnother major AGAC project
and a continuing one is gettingnew members - especiallyyoung writers, whom the guildfeels, need counsel in what isnot only a creative professionbut also a highly complicatedbusiness. Word-of-mouth, it isfelt, is the most successfulway to gain new members andso all members are encouragedto spread the gospel to fellowsongwriters.
AGAC is proud of what ithas wrought in the way ofbenefits for the songwriterover the last 35 years-manyof the realities once not muchmore than dreams in first presi-dent Sigmund Romberg's head. These years have been pre-cedent setters. AGAC obviouslyplans now to follow precedentby setting more precedent.
Yardbird Label Set Action at JamecoHOLLYWOOD - Red Lath-
rop, owner and President ofG.I. Records, has announcedthe formation of his new sub-sidiary label, Yardbird Rec-ords. Red's initial release onthis new label is entitled "Un-chain My Heart" and "There'sStill Time," by the Starfires.
Jameco Records, reportingaction on "Dance Girl" by Roy"C" on Black Hawk and "CallMe (Baby Won't You CallMe)" by Edward Hamilton andthe Fifes on Jameco, has madea distrib change. In New YorkCity, Beta Record Distributorsreplaces Portem.
PHILADELPHIA-Early re-turns of questionnaires to theRegular Members of NARM,in preparation for the 1965 An-nual NARM Study indicate that1965 saw the greatest growthin record merchandising everrecorded in the phonographrecord industry.
Based on the first group ofreturns sent to the NARM of-fice, indications are that out-lets serviced by rack jobbermembers of NARM will go sub-stantially above the 1964 fig-ure of almost 25,000. This netincrease is noteworthy, par-ticularly in view of the factthat the questionnaires showthat rack jobbers are droppingsmall, unprofitable accountswhich are either bad creditrisks or difficult to serviceproperly. The growth of rec-ord rack merchandisers out-lets is basically in the area oflarger, full-scale record de-partments, featuring all hitand catalog product. The gainin this area more than over-sha dows the loss of smaller, unprofitable accounts.
Gross volume figures in earlyreturns reveal a substantial
increase in multi -million dol-lar operations in rack mer-chandising. Early indicationsare that there is a much largergroup of NARM record mer-chandisers doing in excess oftwo million dollars, as well asa growing number quoting agross dollar volume in excessof five million dollars.
In keeping with this appar-ent trend in growth, on theother end of the scale thesmallest volume figures quotedon early returns are consider-ably higher than the low vol-ume figures of 1964-indicat-ing that even the smallest rackmerchandising operations havegrown percentage -wise along-side their giant competitors, and have entrenched them-selves with their outlets, do-ing more business with them,in addition to expanding intomore and different types ofoutlets. A small, but notice-able trend in types .of outletsserviced is in the area of rec-cord stores. Indications arethat a growing number of rec-ord specialty shops find the

BY ALAN FREEMANIt's been a strange sort of
week.I had a portrait painted in
oils sent me by a fan, and onshowing it to a colleague I wasasked, "Was it painted 15 yearsago?" Then while I was on theair at BBC with my program,"Pick of the Pops," MadameGinette Spanier burst into thestudio fresh from her Americanlecture tour, and when I in-quired, "Who did you meet?",she replied "Everyone!" (I knewshe wasn't kidding either, andI'll tell you one or two of herobservations in a minute.)
I then went to Manchester forthe BBC TV program, "Top of
the Pops," which by the way, was voted the No. 1 musical pro-gram in the late 1965 pop polls, and on the program we hadthe pleasure of Herman's Hermits . . . the Nashville Teens . . .
The Spencer Davis Group, among many, and also a film of TonyBennett wandering around New York to his British release of"The Very Thought of You" (going very well it is, too).
I must report to you of the never -ceasing wonders of medicalscience. I was having a little trouble with a wisdom tooth andsurrounding gum, so off I went to my dentist who pushed mymouth wide open only after great protest, held it open andgazed for so long, I was absolutely convinced he'd discoveredgold other than what he'd put there himself! Anyway, he gaveme some very strange looking tablets, assured me I would becured if I followed instructions to the letter, and he was ab-solutely spot on! I took the tablets as directed, and I'm happyto tell you that my burnt fingers are completely healed, andthe only problem I have left is that my wisdom tooth and sur-rounding gum have been very painful for days, and still are!
Now, getting back to Ginette Spanier of Paris and fashionand hemlines and all. She told me that having been nicknamed"Mugsy" by Lena Horne some time ago, she at last had the

Cooper to EpicA & R Staff
Ted Cooper has joined EpicRecords as Producer, and Aand R, according to an an-nouncement by Robert Morgan, director of A and R for thelabel.
Cooper will be responsibleto Morgan for recording artistsas assigned and for developingalbum ideas and artists.
Cooper comes to Epic fromShapiro, Bernstein & Co., Inc.,music publishers, where heserved as General ProfessionalManager and, prior to that, asa staff writer.
In addition, he was inde-pendent producer for the Sha-piro -Bernstein -owned Alice -in -Wonderland Productions, wherehe recorded the Drifters andthe Flamingos, as well asothers. Previously, he was em-ployed as staff writer at ScreenGems.
opportunity to talk to the "Mugsy" Spanier on the phone whileshe was there, and it was one of her great thrills. She is quiteconvinced that Angie Dickinson is the luckiest girl in the worldhaving a husband like Burt Bacharach, and goes on to say thatSybil is the second luckiest girl in the world being married toJordan Christopher; and feeling that this was the right momentto ask, I said "What about the girl who marries me Ginette?"To which she replied, "Absolute disaster for the poor devil!"Anyway, before she left, we both agreed on one thing withoutany doubt at all, and that was that the Swinging Blue Jeanshave a big potential hit on their hands with their new releaseof "Don't Make Me Over." From the album "My Name Is Barbra,Two," "Second Hand Rose" has been released as a single, andlooks as though it might make the Top 20 before it's spun toomuch further.
I don't know if Peter Nero would approve, but yes or no,there's a new release by the Second City Sound entitled "Tchai-kovsky One," and it could be a very big ONE indeed! ThatBeatles song, "Michelle," has hit the Top 20 from the Over-landers, and further down the charts there's another goodversion from David and Jonathan and it looks like an early suc-cess for Roy Orbison with "Breakin' Up is Breakin' My Heart."Incidentally, watch out for a record that's coming over yourway from Paul and Barry Ryan, "Have Pity on the Boy." Theboys don't need pity because the record's rather smashing!
Incidentally, how do you look your doctor in the face andsay, "Do you know a good dentist who can fix teeth?"

NARM Study(Continued from, page 11)
services of a record merchan-diser the most economic an-swer to their buying problems.
Discounting DeemphasisIn listing the major problems
which they face, NARM recordmerchandisers' early returnsshow for the first time, adeemphasis on discounting asa major business problem. Al-though all returns receivedthus far show that to a greateror lesser degree, record prod-uct is discounted almost uni-versally, discounting is not amajor problem, and discountedprices seem to have reached alevel with which the recordmerchandiser can live.
Jules Malamud, NARM Ex-excutive Director, in issuingthe statement on the early re-turns to the NARM Study ques-tionnaire, said:
"The tremendous growth involume which early returnsshow was the situation withvirtually every NARM recordmerchandiser has underscoredthe importance of the themeof the 1966 NARM Convention- 'Planning for Profits' -toevery Regular Member ofNARM. With a greater num-ber and variety of outlets toservice, with a greater grossdollar volume to handle andwith the more complex prob-lems this type of rapid busi-ness growth brings with it, theBusiness Sessions program ofour forthcoming convention-which this year will be pro-fessionally planned and ex-ecuted by a team of top man-agement, merchandising, andbusiness consultants-will bethe most valuable in our his-tory. We are well aware thatlarge volume does not neces-sarily reflect realistic profits.Proper profit management canbe the key to the future re-liability and growth of the rec-ord merchandising segment ofthe phonograph record indus-try."
The 1966 Eighth AnnualNARM Convention convenesMarch 6 through March 10, atthe Fontainbleau Hotel inMiami Beach, Fla.
Most Successful YearHOLLYWOOD-Philip Skaff,
Executive Vice -President, Lib-erty Records, Inc., has called1965 "The most successful yearin the history of Liberty Rec-ords."
Skaff went on to cite thefirm's accelerated growth dur-ing the latter period, whichincluded the purchase of WorldPacific Records, a pressingplant and added land for ex-pansion.
Skaff pointed up the corpora-tion's domestic sales increased50% over 1964. Important fac-tors which contributed to therecord high was the flow ofhit product, publishing in-terests and the development ofnew artists. "It was truly abanner year," said Skaff, "high-lited by our 10th anniversarycelebration and a series ofpowerful sales programs."
In addition to maintainingits record of hit singles, Lib-erty and its subsidiaries (Im-perial - Dolton- World Pacific -Pacific Jazz) produced LPchart items in an ever-in-creasing manner, further en-hancing the company's albumcatalog.
Many New ArtistsLiberty's alert A & R depart-
ment in all three divisionscreated many new artists andbrought others "over the top."Mel Carter and Jackie De -Shannon both achieved starstatus in 1965. DeShannon via"What The World Needs NowIs Love" and Mel Carter with"Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me."
Newcomers who hit paydirtinclude the Deep Six ("RisingSun"), Leon Hayward ("She'sWith Her Other Love"), theGants ("Road Runner"), BobLind ("Elusive Butterfly"),Jimmy McCracklin ("Think"),the Delegates ("Pygmy") anda string of hits by Gary Lewisand the Playboys and Cher.
The label further diversifiedits interests with formation ofa tape division for the manu-facturer of cartridges forautomobile and home. RonBleddsoe heads up the newdepartment with Dick Bowmanhelming sales.
Philip SkaffLiberty's Executive VP
Another major move was thesetting up of a budget recordline, Sunset Records, underthe direction of Edward Bar-sky, who is now establishingthe division at Liberty's homeoffice in Los Angeles.
International IncreaseInternationally, Liberty has
increased its prestige con-siderably with added personneland a string of potent artistssuch as the Ventures. RonaldKass was appointed Directorof Overseas Operations andserves as a direct liaison be-tween the home office and Eu-rope, coordinating closely withInternational Sa 1 e s DirectorJerry Thomas and Mike Gould,General Manager of Liberty'spublishing interests.
"Perhaps another reason forour success during 1965" saidSkaff, "was the division sys-tem, providing a competitiveand autonomous spirit for eachlabel. Under this set-up, Lib-erty, Imperial and World Pa-cific each operate indepen-dently."
"Our blueprint for the fu-ture includes further diversi-fication, additional emphasis onconsumer advertising and, ofcourse, a continuous search forunique marketing procedures. While Liberty has achievedmajor status, it will never losethe 'personalized service' imageprevalent wherever Libertybusiness is conducted."

Words Are the ThingTo Noel Harrison
BY DOUG McCLELLAND
NEW Y O R K - "Words, words, words" cursed JulieAndrews as she sang about herrelentless diction teacher RexHarrison in "My Fair Lady,"beseeching the professor to"Show Me."
"Eliza" wouldn't favor "Hig-gins' " son Noel Harrison anybetter. He is just as obsessedwith words, although Noel'swords are more likely to extolDylan's Fourth Street thanLerner-Loewe's plain in Spain.Talking with the London Rec-ords diseur at his New Yorkdigs last week, Record Worldgauged the exact distance thefruit had fallen from the tree.
"To me, melody and beatare merely a means of gettingacross a lyric," said Harrison."Which is not to say I don'tenjoy them, of course. I thinkI have to love a song beforeI can do it," added the artiston the currently successfulsingle record, "A Young Girl."
First U.S. LP Due
Coming out in a week or soon the London label is Noel'sfirst U.S. LP ("I did three orfour in England, but they onlysold about 365 copies"). It'scalled "Noel Harrison," andfeatures tunes by CharlesAznavour, Oscar Brown Jr.,Lennon and McCartney, BillieHoliday and Bob Dylan, thelatter an idol of Harrison's.
His newest single, "It's AllOver Now, Baby Blue," is byDylan.
He says he does songs byvery few composers.)
"I chose the songs for thealbum based on what the wordssay rather than anything else. There's a whole new feel aboutsongs since Dylan."
Georgia Brown, who livesdownstairs in Harrison's West
Noel HarrisonHis Law Is Word
Side brownstone, is doing theliner notes for the LP. Harri-son said he usually eschewsstandards-"They tend to berather cliche in form, eightbars, eight bars, etc. Thelyrics, too."
An Actor, Too
A singer for several years.Noel is now "getting near" thestage of songwriting. He'salso acted some, has appearedin several movies and has anew film coming out, MGM's"Where the Spies Are," star-ring David Niven.
"But singing comes first."he says. "And to perform thesongs, you have to perform thelyrics."
Harrison, who looks not un-like his dad (but whose babydaughter-he has three chil-dren-looks even more like lastyear's Best Actor Oscar win-ner), once thought of doing asingle disk with his father.Heretofore a tribute to hisclass, Noel mumbled the rea-son why the record never cameabout with an inaudibility thatwould have stunned ProfessorHiggins.
ESP Rents TheaterBernard Stollman's ESP -Disk
Records announced last weekthat they have rented a theaterin NYC's Greenwich Village, and will sponsor a series ofconcerts beginning Jan. 24.
Assistant to the PresidentElizabeth Vandermei says thatthe Astor Place Playhouse willbe used as an outlet for all thecreative arts. The Mondaynight set will feature AlbertAyler, one of the label's mostforceful and successful talents.Future sessions may well in-clude ballet, music, theater, etc.

18 RECORD WORLD-January 29, 1966
NEW YORK-A number ofyears ago, when people talkedabout what a manager could dowith a recording artist, theytalked about Bob Marcucci. ThenMarcucci tired of the managinggame and took some time off.Now he's back and with a stableof people whom he will be mold-ing into shape during 1966.
"I've learned a lot about man-aging since I began and I knowthere are things I don't have todo. I don't have to be a handholder and I don't have to be adresser. I learned that I can doa much more effective job spend-ing time behind a telephone thanaccompanying an artist to everyappearance.
"Of course, I'll always bealong on important TV or re-cording stints. And I'll go on theroad when an artist is breakingin an act. But I know more nowand the business has changedsince I started. You have to movefaster now to establish an art-ist."
First Love: Records"My first love, of course, is
the record business," Marcuccistated. "I love making recordsand I'm back at that. I've gotproduction deals with MGM, Col-pix and Columbia." His recordproduction will share equal timewith his managing work and, ofcourse, overlap.
The growth of the Marcuccifold, which he co-partners withNew York -based Stan Polley, hasmultiplied rapidly within thelast few months. MGM's John

Andrea was the first of the cur-rent crop. Andrea is just aboutto go into production on a movieunder his 20th Century Fox filmcontract.
In the summer while guidingAndrea around, Marcucci wascontacted by Larchmont Pro-ductions and thereby came thesecond member of the presentteam. Larchmont, a new recordproducing firm, wanted to seeif Marcucci could do somethingto turn a new artist of theirsinto a more polished night clubperformer. The performer wasand is Barry Young. And Mar-cucci went to work on the fel-low's style and also went to workon the fellow's first single, "OneHas My Name." He stayed onthe Dot release for four monthsand when the record became ahit, he signed Young into thisoffice.
Marcucci's plans for the singerare very big-keeping him inthe Dean Martin groove hescored in, but also adding to thatvaried performing approaches.A big build-up is just about tobegin on him.
MANAGED BY MARCUCCI: Barry Young, Ann -Marie, John An-drea and Lou Christie.
FINKLE
Lou Christie came to Marcucciwith his currently clicking"Lightnin' Strikes" on MGM;Marcucci liked what he heardand especially liked the poten-tial. Right now he's preparingto send Christie out in all direc-tions. A night club act is in theworks. Movie and TV deals arebeing bruited about with MGM.A February release date istagged on the MGM -Christie al-bum.
Marcucci is aiming Lou forwider adult acceptance (as he ismost of the people he is workingwith).
"I don't want to be botheredwith anyone who doesn't havethe ability to branch out in manydirections. You can be classy andget the adult audience and stillget to the teens. They are accept-ing elegance these days and notjust the long hair, long pantsthing."

He's justguiding her recording career atthe moment.
Her recording contract withColpix has Marcucci excited. Hereports that it all started whenGeneral Manager Bud Katzelcalled him one Friday to sayColpix was looking for a 16 -year -old singer who had a feel forjazz.

R18WHERE IT'S AT
BEA
BY KAL RUDMAN
We hate to tease you about something that is coming up,but we are not at liberty to give you the full details abouta new record coming out in February that Jerry Wexler saysis "The most exciting, swingingest, most 'down,' greatestsound created in the last decade in the world of R&B!"
I can only clue you that King Curtis and his boys wrote thefigures, that the vocal is done by the great Ray Sharpe, thatit was cut in the Atlantic studios but the atmosphere is allSouth of the Mason-Dixon line, and that it is so down that
you will feel those icy soul fingers pull yourscalp skin clean off your skull bone.
The title of the new Wilson Pickett is"6345789." Why numbers? Last week whenI interviewed Len Barry, he clued us thatusing numbers as a title will always "makeit," and that's why he wrote "1-2-3" ... Thenew Mar -Keys is "The Philly Dog" and theyhave a new Mar -Keys LP that will blowyour mind . . . The new Mad Lads broke
wide open in N.Y.C. and Philadelphia (because they ownPhilly ). The title is, "I Want Someone" . . . Bill Williamstells me that he is going with "You Make A Strong GirlWeak," Premiers, Stax, and the Pick on WCHB, Detroit is,"Little Bit Of Soap," Exciters, Bang . . . The Eddie Holmanand Jerry Williams are smashes for Cameo/Calla.
Burke Johnson, WAOK, Atlanta, is cooking with some "B"sides: "Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide" by Jackie ("TheDuck" ) Lee; "I Need a Lot of Loving," Ovations, Amy; and"Funny Not Much," Walter Jackson, Okeh . . . Meanwhile,Ken Hawkins of WJMO, Cleveland, tells me that, "My Judge -Day," Darrow Fletcher, Groovy, broke wide open as a "B" side"gone from the hot-line but not forgotten" . . . Meanwhile,Lucky Cordell, PD of WVON, Chicago, confirms the power of"My Judgement Day" and agrees with Burke on the "B" sideof "The Duck" and made the Jackie Lee The WVON "Top &Bottom" of the week.
Jim Stewart of Stax just called to relate that the new Rufusand Carla Thomas is "Birds and he Bees." He said that whenFat Daddy saw the cover of the new Thomas where she is sit-ting in a big red bed with her big eyes, they had to revivePaul with oxygen. Jim says that he and Jerry Wexler are allout on album product, and have some great ones on deck. AlBell has done a great promo job for them. The new DannyWhite is going for Hal Atkins and there is reaction to bothsides: "Keep My Woman Home" and "Dedicating My Life ToYou." Ken Reeth of WAMO is excited about "Ya Ya," Mike &Ike, Arctic, which Jimmy Bishop is handling for him . . . JohnRichbourg is excited about the Detroit breakout on "Easy Go-ing Fellow," Roscoe Shelton, S.S. 7, and the big play on WWRLwith Rocky Groce and all the other guys . . . Ed Wright andLes Anderson are excited about the action on "Got To FindA Girl," Intertains, Uptown, which all the guys are playing. . . And with all this "in" product, they are still finding ithard to find enough good records to program.
The new Edwin Starr, "Stop Her On Sight," is a gas andLe Baron Taylor tells me that Ric Tic has a Top 10 smash with,"To Win Your Heart," Laura Lee . . . Barbara Mason is mak-ing it . . . "Have No Fear," Danny Boy Thomas, Groovy, brokein Pittsburgh and looks good in Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago,Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington . . . The DarrowFletcher is breaking Pop on WIBG, Philadelphia and CKLW& WXYZ, Detroit . . . Hot Rod, WWIN, Balt. loves, "Mama,"Audry Slo, Bay. Sales are starting -a solid Pick.
The Lorraine Ellison on Mercury is Top 10 at WVON andthe Deon Jackson is a smash . . . Lucky Cordell is pickingRonnie Milsap; Christine Cooper and going with AnnabelleFox and the Intertains.

RECORD WORLD-January 29, 1966 21
KAL RUDMAN'S
Money MusicThe big news in the pop music world is that father and daugh-
ter of the Sinatra clan have solid hit records. "These Boots" byNancy went Top 10 in Albany and Memphis fast, took off inTexas and then the world. Frank is Top 15 in N.Y.C., Cleve-land, Hartford, through the South, Top 10 in Dallas, going inDetroit, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Providence,Tampa, Akron, Youngstown and all over.
Again we are breaking our arms patting ourselves on theback about "Call Me," Chris Montez, A&M, which we "called"before it was cut. It's a Top 10 smash in Detroit, Phoenix,Philadelphia, Sacramento, Atlanta, the South, hot in San Fran-cisco, Washington, San Jose, Miami, Beaumont and many othermarkets . . . "Second Hand Rose," Barbra Streisand, broke firstin Philadelphia on the big adult station, Metro -Media's WIP.This station was also first to break Barbra's record of "People."The reason WIP is rated so well is because they grabbed somany adult listeners.
The Supremes is a giant . . . "I See The Light," 5 Americans,HBR is Top 5 in Ft. Worth, a smash in Los Angeles, Detroit andis large in Chicago, Milwaukee, Dallas, Houston, San Diego,San Bernardino, Tampa, Columbus, Phoenix, San Jose, Phila-delphia, etc. . . . "I Fought the Law," Bobby Fuller, Mustang,is a smash in Los Angeles, Detroit, San Francisco, Pittsburgh,Washington, Buffalo, Albany, Hartford, Raleigh, Birminghamand all through the South. It's Top 10 in Baltimore and goingin Hartford . . . "Hurt Yourself," Frank Valli, Smash, is asmash in N.Y. and Philadelphia, going in Boston, Buffalo, Pro-vidence and looks big . . . "California Dreamin'," Mommas &Poppas, Dunhill, is a giant in Boston and going big in Rochester,San Diego, Sacramento, Seattle and is a hit . . . "Elusive Butter-fly," Bob Lind, W. Pacific, is #1 in Miami, big in the South,Top 20 in Sacramento, going in Columbus, and is a hit . . . "TheCheater," Bob Kuban, Amy, went #1 in St. Louis and then wasconfirmed by Sacramento's Top 10 listing, and broke in Balti-more and Washington and Denver. It's a terrific record . . .
"Are You There," Dionne Warwick, Scepter, is much bigger popthan people think. Dig: Top 10 in Detroit, San Bernardino, Top3 in Birmingham, Top 20 in San Bernardino and Miami andMinn., going in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Buf-falo, N.Y., Indiana, Phoenix, Rochester, Norfolk, Hartford, Akron,Oklahoma City, etc. . . . Pete Garris really pulled a coup bybuying the B. J. Thomas for Scepter. It's No. 1 in Houston, then he got the pick at KRLA, L.A. and it broke wide open.Hank Williams' genius for writing songs lives on. B. J. does agreat job on "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry."
"Michelle," David & Jonathan, is a smash . . . "Georgianna,"Princetons, Colpix, looks like the first big hit for Bud Katzel. All his friends in N.Y. are happy for him, like Morris Levy.Record came from Des Moines. It then broke in Chicago andthe Mid -West . . . Pete Garris will have another hit with hisRonnie Milsap-both sides are great! . . . The Ronnie Dove isa Sure -Shot . . . "Recovery," Fontella Bass, Checker, is Top 10in Youngstown and in Dallas and Louisville; Top 15 in Wash-ington and Sacramento, Top 20 in New Orleans and going inPhiladelphia, Cleveland, Buffalo, Dayton, Albany, San Jose,Birmingham, Akron, Oklahoma City, etc. . . . "Andrea," Sunrays,Tower, is going great in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington,Cleveland, Dallas, Sacramento, big in Phoenix, Akron, big downSouth etc. . . . "Michael," C.O.D.'s, Kellmac, will do 90,000 inN.Y.C. when it gets on WMCA because it has that New Yorksound. It's Top 5 in Hartford, Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago . . .
The Stevie Wonder is Top 5 to Top 10 in Atlanta, Philadelphia,Detroit, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, the South, big in Sacramento.

Club Review
Rascals Re -open,Wow WhiskeyHOLLYWOOD - The Whis-
key A Go Go re -opened on theSunset Strip last week andmade a wise choice in import-ing the East Coast group theYoung Rascals as the openingact for the refurbished club.
The four youngsters in knick-ers comprise one of the bestrock groups of the currentcrop and should have the linesforming along Sunset Blvd.again. All display superiormusicianship, particularly thedrummer who manages to keepa strong beat going while per-forming animatedly for strongvisual effect. The boys singsolos and in unison on boththeir own material and on rockstandards. Best of the latterwas an exciting version of"You've Lost That Lovin'Feelin'." Topper was t h e i rrendition of their current hotAtlantic disk, "I Ain't GonnaEat My Heart Out Anymore."
Club has a new policy whichadmits 18 -year -olds, and theyoung Rascals will certainlybring in this group as well asthe adult crowd.

The Lloyd GreenSuccess Story
NASHVILLE - Five yearsago, Lloyd Green went to Nash-ville to find his place as a steelguitar player. He found nosuccess after trying for twoyears, and began selling shoes.
He started again; this timehe really applied himself andhis sounds became much in de-mand. Green's sounds areheard on many hit singles suchas Warner Mack's "The BridgeWashed Out" and "Satin' On aRock."

Got a note last week from BobScott, PD at WTHE, Garden City, Long Island, New York. They've just made the big switch to big country sounds, pour-ing 10,000 watts of it into that world's largest country market!WJRZ and WTHE should give them something to listen to in thebig city.
"Goodtime Charlie" is Bonnie Guitar's boy for '66. BossmanRandy Wood says it's a sure bet to break big for Bonnie. ThisDot dandy could make Bonnie another country -pop natural.
Cecil Null, writer of Johnny Wright's current smash, "Keepthe Flag Flying," announces a new record release for LebBrinson. Leb's newie was an original song called, "Without You."According to Cecil (who built and designed the world's mostbeautiful autoharp), Leb's on his way again to the Top 10.
Ran into Buck Owens and Omac Corporation boss JackMcFadden at Phoenix Airport on my way to KINO radio, Win-slow. Manager Bob Donovan setting up a special country showfor the " '66 station" (it's the most listened -to station on West-ern Highway '66). Personalities Bob Polk, Jack Hughes andAlex Kuhn keep traffic on the big hiway moving merrily alongwith "keeno" music. Oh yes, Buck and Jack were in Phoenixfor the giant annual "Pioneer Days" celebration. Buck starredfor the second consecutive year.
K -PUB, Pueblo showed off last week to a full house at Me-morial Auditorium, playing host to Sheb Wooley, Ben Colder,Claude Gray, Hal Willis, Kathy Morrison and Bill Wilbourne.K-PUB's first country spec of '66. This very active outlet is alsoone of the best -sounding operations representing country music.
Saw Polly Bergen on "Tonight" show last week and thoughtof her beginning in showbiz on Carl "Squeakin' Deacon" Moore'stalent show years ago, and subsequent appearances on CliffieStone's "Hometown Jamboree." Yep, she started in country!
Claude McBride and Longhorn Records' Boss Dewey Groomproject their biggest year in '66 with Phil Baugh, Janet McBride,Billy Gray and Vern Stovall (who has a new one due any day).Bill Anderson's single release of Curtis Leach's "Golden Guitar"is moving by leaps and bounds.
Note from Darnell Miller. He seems convinced that "YouCan't Make Hay Pickin' Cotton," but he's convinced me that youcan make hay singing about it. Darnell's a regular on the WWVAoriginal jamboree and Challenge Records' pride. Arlen Sandersand company are making hay with coverage country music hasnever had before. Twenty-four hours, 50,000 watts whopper, that's country power!
Bobby Griggs Off on Promo JauntBobby Griggs, fresh from a healthy hit on "That's Not What
He's Got on His Mind," is off and running on a 3,000 promojaunt in the West to tell 'em about his new "Release Me" single.Tower Records so excited about Bobby's first single successthey're projecting an album session for Bobby in early March.Bobby's record can be obtained with a note on station letter-head to 1041 Pine Ave., Long Beach, Calif. Pamela Miller, busyon the coast with local and syndicated TV tapings, is still gettin'listings and sales reports on her super -cute "Little Miss No-body." She's something!
Gene Davis, popular bandleader, starts a new Saturday nightTVer for Brand Motors, giant L.A. car dealer, on channel 13.Cal Worthington, Dodge dealer, inaugurated the country TVshow car sponsorship some years ago and has sustained it withhis now institutional Sunday afternoon country showcase, "Cal'sCorral."
Johnny Bond has a new Starday single and LP due any day, waxes enthusiastically about the prospects. This guy stays busyand is always ready to rave about country music and its wonder-ful future. Oh yes, Johnny told me he has four controls on hisTV set . . . his wife and three children!
