MANY CULTURES, ONE GAME.By Kirstie Fitzgerald

If there has been one thing we have learnt from this week in football, it is that we are all proud of where we have come from. Whether we have a European, Asian, African, Middle Eastern, Australian or indigenous background, it is pleasing to know that

the common denominator of simply playing football, can bring us all together. While the past week may have divided football critics on whether the nation has taken a step backwards with regards to racism, it is times such as this which can also bring the community closer together and band as one to acknowledge our rich cultural diversity. This weekend, the WRFL and wider football community will join in the festivities and celebrate the AFL’s Multicultural Round over August 7-9.Producing AFL products such as Bachar Houli (Spotswood FC) and Majak Daw (Wyndhamvale FC), the WRFL is proud to have a vast array of multicultural members dedicate their time and passion to our great game each week. Add to that the support from fellow AFL stars such as Western Bulldogs Lin Jong and Brett Goodes, the greater western region community is a solid platform to embrace the rich heritage we are synonymous for. However while it is rounds like this which raise awareness of our cultural diversity, we continue to embrace our different backgrounds

every week outside the realms of the dedicated round. In the WRFL alone, there are more than 64 unique cultures represented on the field every week and a further 28 countries which our players parents were born in. With a third of the world’s countries represented in the WRFL, this is a positive sign of the strength we have as not only a league, but as a community. For a closer look at how you can get involved in some of the Multicultural activities across the west this weekend, please ensure you flip to page 3.In other news, this weekend will see the first round of junior Grand Finals being played at Wootten Road Reserve (Tarneit) and Hogans Road Reserve (Hoppers Crossing). With 13 different clubs represented in the 12 grand final matches played today, it is great to see that the talent across the west is spread far and wide. For a full run down of Junior Finals fixtures, please turn to page 64.Of course for all the latest news, videos and photo galleries, make sure you visit our website www.wrfl.asn.au or keep up to date with our social media pages using the handle @westernregionfl. Football is about togetherness. It’s about people of all nationalities, beliefs, and genders coming together for the joy of sport. While multiculturalism is thriving in the western region on a regular basis, the WRFL will join the wider football community to celebrate the AFL’s Multicultural Round from August 7-9.The Asian Cup will be in full swing again this year, as the curtain raiser to the Western derby VFL game between Williamstown vs Footscray, which will be held on Sunday August 9 at Burbank Oval. Two Asian teams in the Western All- Stars and the Southern Dragons, will battle it out for the Asian Cup which has been a fierce tradition for the last three years. In their first three years of competition, the Southern Dragons have won the SFL’s Division Three title, and despite having a break from competition this year, will be filled with immense talent this weekend. The Western All-Stars is a community football team made up of predominantly Vietnamese players, who are committed to growing the game and creating a pathway for all backgrounds into local western region clubs.AFL Victoria Football Development Manager, Tony Nguyen, said that the event was a good way for both players and local clubs to embrace each other. “The Asian cup is really about breaking down the barriers for highly talented Asian players who don’t have the belief of joining a local football team and showcasing their talent.“As a result, the Braybrook Sporting Club has recruited four to five players over the journey so it’s great to see that transition of players back into the community.

“We want people to embrace football, and embrace one another, which is what these programs are aimed to do.”On the other side of the western region, the Werribee Football Club is doing their part to celebrate our vast diversity with a dedicated Multicultural Day held at their next home match against Footscray at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday August 30. With many different nationalities represented in the Wyndham area, Werribee Football Club Community Development ambassador, Majok Ngong, said the club is dedicated in bringing the community together through its cultural diversity.“Werribee is very heavily involved in the community with our school programs and it’s something we are passionate about and engaging with people.“This will be the fifth year that we will be hosting a multicultural day, and I guess it’s all about celebrating different cultures around Wyndham.”Ngong himself comes from a Sudanese background so for him to see the club so heavily involved in multiculturalism “is an honour for me and creates a sense of belonging for us within the community.”With many successful AFL players coming from a range of diverse ethnicities, people across the west should encourage others to get involved in the various multicultural events this weekend, in order to not only bridge the gap, but to also embrace one another’s company. TRIBUNAL REPORTWeek 16 August 1 - 2

The Wyndhamvale Youth Girls team are ready to make history this Saturday as they run out to play in the Western Youth Girls Grand Final against Melbourne University. While the combined Western Youth Girls competition between the EDFL and WRFL has been running since 2013, the WRFL is yet to have one of its own teams taste premiership glory. Over the past three seasons, the Youth Girls competition has become exceptionally strong, with players having the opportunity to compete against an array of different clubs as well as give new teams time to develop. Having played each other only twice this year, the Falcons seem to have the upper hand on their Melbourne University counterparts, having convincingly defeated them on each occasion. But it’s not only Melbourne University who the Falcons have defeated this year, with co- captains Sabin Nyawela and Brook Eley leading the team to an undefeated season and sit comfortably on top of the ladder. Having played each other a fortnight ago in the second semi-final, long time Wyndhamvale coach Steve Tessari is hoping their unbeaten run continues.“While we have had a good season so far, the girls must stay grounded and focused.“It was unfortunate that Melbourne Uni played straight after the girls Under 18 carnival which meant they didn’t have their strongest side performing, but make no mistake, both sides will be out to win so we must play our best game if we want to win the premiership.”The return of Melbourne University State players will be just one of the challenges that Wyndhamvale faces today as they aim for the flag.

Having lost to Melbourne University last year in the preliminary final, Wyndhamvale is determined to even the ledger, with the loss motivating them to increase the standard of football and review their tactics.“The girls’ standard has risen a lot since last year and they are incredibly committed,” Tessari said. Commencing training twice a week since last November by request of the players, Tessari said that they have worked well as a team. “The girls are very easy to coach and hang off every word.” The team ranges from girls aged 13 – 18, with all players having exceptional skills and a “willingness to learn” which makes the Wyndhamvale Youth Girls “really good footballers.”Earning a week off with the bye last week, the mood around the club has been “very positive” as they continue to prepare for the big day. Here’s hoping all their hard work pays off and the 2015 Western Youth Girls premiership returns to the WRFL this season.

While Saturday’s Division Three clash between Albanvale and North Sunshine will be a normal day at the office for most, for Cobra duo Brendan Cassar and Dean Formosa, it will be something special when the pair run out for their 300th and 400th games respectively. However reaching the milestone club is not uncommon at Robert Bruce Reserve, with 11 other current players achieving 300 games or more.In addition to the duo’s achievement, the day will also celebrate teammate Justin Allen’s 300th match when he reached his milestone in round 14 earlier this season. Formosa, Cassar and Allen are looked up too by the rest of the club, and this match is an excellent opportunity to celebrate all they have done for the Cobras over the journey.Wearing number #27 for the blue and white, Brendan Cassar is a strong and reliant player for the senior side, along with the powerhouse of Formosa who has consistently played in Albanvale senior side since 2012.

Formosa will be joining teammate John Sirianni who is the only other current senior Albanvale player to have achieved 400 matches. In addition to this, Allen and Cassar will be joining fellow Cobras Michael Bassi, Jarryd Formosa, David Azzopardi, Michael Spatolisano, Jason Curmi and Paul Adams who have all reached 300 games for Albanvale.Amazingly, with the exception of Bassi, all of these players are under the age of 30. In a time where loyalty to one club is a rarity, it is evident that the leadership from these senior players is valued in high regards as both the senior and reserve sides strive to win the club’s first senior premiership.Congratulations to all players who have achieved this milestone, especially the three players that are set to celebrate at today’s match.Win, lose or draw, I’m sure it will be a great day for all involved and one to savour for many years to come.

Has there been a more important round of matches in the 2015 season than the tantalizing games on offer this weekend? I think not.

Altona currently sit in fifth spot and must cool their jets this weekend with the bye.

They will be watching with great interest the game between Spotswood and Sunshine at McLean Reserve.

If Sunshine wins they move to just two points off that fifth position and the two sides meet in the final round of the year. If Sunshine loses the race for the five is over. The big question is can Sunshine win?

When they last met in round 8 Spotswood won by a point. The lead up for both teams has been very different, with Spotswood coming off the bye and the Kangaroos losing at home to Hoppers Crossing. Both of these sides are yet to convince me they are genuine premiership threats, but if ever they are to stand up and be counted, this Saturday is it.

Sunshine keep their finals hopes alive with a win and Spotswood will move into the top three. The stakes don’t get much higher and picking the winner much harder. When in doubt always go the home team is my usual motto, so Spotswood by a whisker.

Soldier’s Reserve also boasts a game of great importance when second placed Werribee Districts host third placed Hoppers Crossing. The double chance is vital for any realistic tilt at a premiership and while not assured of that luxury the winner will be well placed.

Andrew Panayi is no certainty to return this week and it would be foolish to risk him so close to the biggest games of the year. Districts have found some strike power up forward with Molivas and Harrington, and the midfield is starting to get involved on the scoreboard. They need that spread of goal kickers against the better sides.

Hoppers Crossing is starting to see valuable contributions from some of its lesser known names and that is what Steve Kretiuk has been searching for. The old primary school ‘good team effort’ is what wins you big games. Falling back again to my tipping motto-Werribee Districts to win this.

Depending on the results of these two games we might see every spot in the five (except top spot) up for grabs.

In other games Port Melbourne Colts will host Deer Park and that score line will probably be ugly. Albion went very close last week against Altona and might just be able to knock over the troubled St. Albans side. In fact I think they can win and in doing so will avoid the wooden spoon. It is their last game of the season and they will be able to celebrate accordingly.

Round 16 saw heavy defeats across the board as three teams enjoyed percentage boosting wins, just weeks out from the start of the 2015 finals series. Werribee Districts had the biggest victory of the round as they easily downed lowly Port Melbourne, 21.7(133) to 2.6(18).The 115-point win was officially over after four quarters, but by half time the end result had well and truly been sewn up. The Colts could only manage two majors for the game, as they struggled to launch attacks on goal, due to the relentless pressure applied by Werribee. This, combined with poor defence by the visitors, allowed the Districts to chalk up multiple uncontested marks inside fifty, gifting many of the home side’s 21-goals. Aaron Taylor was arguably best on field, receiving five votes and kicking a game and season-high seven goals. The percentage boosting win could pay almost immediate dividends, as the Districts are scheduled to play Hoppers Crossing, in a match that could determine who finishes as ladder leaders going into the finals. The road doesn’t get any easier for Port Melbourne, who will play host to Deer Park this afternoon. In other results, Hoppers Crossing came out on top against fellow top four side Sunshine, by 34-points. The first quarter teased a game that would be tight and tense, as Sunshine led by just two points going into the first break, however the Warriors used a powerful second term to break the game open. Six goals to one spelled the beginning of the end for the Kangaroos, who had been in good form heading into the game. The second half only added to the final score line as Sunshine could not reduce the margin, seeing Hoppers Crossing run out 15.9(99) to 9.11(65) victors.

A win today against Spotswood would almost guarantee Sunshine its finals spot, while a loss could see them push further away from securing a double chance. At Grant Reserve, Altona dispatched Albion to the tune of 87-points. The Vikings used 11 individual goal kickers in the win, which saw the Cats goalless in three of the four quarters. Altona can today rest easy, scheduled with the bye, knowing it cannot be knocked out of fifth place, while Albion will aim for just its third win of the season as they battle finals bound St. Albans.A game-high four goals to Kirk Wintels helped the Saints thoroughly outclass Deer Park in its 15.14(104) to 4.2(26) victory. The 78-point thumping was decided early on, as St. Albans had 14 scoring shots to the Lions one by half time, finishing the game with a round high of 29 scoring shots.

ROUND WRAPDIVISION TWO SENIORS

TIVBUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING

DIVISION TWO

There is little more to be decided in the 2015 regular season with just two rounds remaining. Our four finalists will be West Footscray, Wyndhamvale, Yarraville Seddon and North Footscray while Sunshine Heights shall finish rooted to the foot of the table.

Some questions do remain though – can Sunshine Heights break their duck and will West Footscray manage to overhaul Wyndhamvale for the minor premiership? If the clash between the Roosters and Dragons was anything to go by, West Footscray is primed for one final charge while Sunshine Heights’ nightmare season will end without tasting victory.

There is no real way to dress up the lopsided drubbing that this game was. 36 goals to six and 57 scoring shots to 10, left a 197-point margin on the scoreboard. It’s any wonder West Footscray’s 36 goals were shared between only eight players. Munir El Houli and Damien Yze – the most dynamic double act in the competition’s most dangerous forward lines, shared 27 goals between them in delivering what can only be described as football torture. Yet they weren’t even the best on ground – Tobi Bray, Steven McAnulty, Michael Kennedy and Jadyn Trowsdale were all terrific, showing how far down the depth runs at Shorten Reserve.

What good can be taken of the carnage for Sunshine Heights? Perhaps only that this disastrous season is one game closer to being done. Chris Kyriakou has something to build on after his first promising game in the seniors and Junior Eliepa battled but the club’s pre-season prediction that Division Two was a struggle, so far has proven correct.

The win puts West Footscray on the tail of Wyndhamvale by four points but with percentage in hand – a Falcons stumble would see them relinquish their position at the ladder’s head.

That slip wasn’t going to come last week as the Falcons ended the Lakers slim finals chances with a comprehensive victory. Yarraville Seddon also secured their own final’s place with an 11-goal victory over Manor Lakes on the back of Samuel Boyce’s six goals. Finally North Footscray romped to victory over Glen Orden by 145-points.

Round 17 should be more competitive as the two Footscray sides do battle with both in great form. Manor Lakes also host Caroline Springs in a mid-table contest.

Finally, Wyndhamvale should touch up Sunshine Heights to strengthen their grip on the minor premiership and Glen Orden travel to Yarraville Seddon.

Caroline Springs has had to say goodbye to their finals chances after suffering their ninth loss of the season, this time at the hands of premiership favourites, Wyndhamvale.

Earlier in the season, Falcons coach Mark Elso said that the Lakers weren’t to be forgotten in the race for the premiership, but Wyndhamvale have now made sure this is a race that Caroline Springs will not be participating in.

From the first bounce, Wyndhamvale took control of the ball and restricted Caroline Springs from scoring at all during the first quarter.

As the game progressed, the Lakers were able to gain some much needed possession and tried to make up lost ground on the scoreboard, but Wyndhamvale were always one step ahead, eventually running home 49-point winners.

Falcon Shannon Evans had one of his finest games for the season, named in the best players after kicking seven goals for the match-the most he has kicked this season.

With two matches left before finals, Wyndhamvale is once again stamping its authority on the competition, as they move closer to taking home their second premiership in a row.

At Heathdale Oval, the Devils enjoyed a percentage boosting win over the Hawks, downing the home side by 94-points, while Yarraville Seddon made light work of Manor Lakes, the final margin 25.18 (168) to 2.5 (17).

Unfortunately, Sunshine Heights were unable to get enough numbers last weekend and were forced to forfeit their match to West Footscray who sit comfortably on top of the ladder.

It’s the second last round for the home and away season and with the top four teams already decided, the remainder of the year determine who the minor premiers will be.

Wyndhamvale will go in as hot favourites when they take on Sunshine Heights at Ainsworth Reserve, hoping their performance will deliver a big margin against the Dragons in order to increase their percentage.

The 3012 postcode will be fiercely contested as the two Footscray teams battle it out at Hansen

Reserve, as North Footscray take on West.

Caroline Springs will host Manor Lakes, while Yarraville Seddon are favourites to win against Glen Orden.

29 WRFL FOOTY RECORD

This season in the Under 16 and Under 18 sections there has been a handful of females waving flags. One of them is Darcy Kirkpatrick who is in her first year of umpiring. A Year 8 student at MacKillop Secondary College, aged only 14, Darcy decided to become involved in umpiring because she enjoys football and wanted to be a part of the game without actually playing.

Darcy was part of the WRFL goal umpiring mentoring program where for the first three or four games the trainee actually has an experienced goalie standing with them. One mentor said, “Darcy knew lots about football which meant she also understood many of the things that a goal umpire would do. She just lacked a little bit of self-assurance and confidence.” Darcy definitely benefitted from the help and guidance from her mentors who included Craig Hill, Graeme Hodgart and John Sutton.

Darcy lists the highlight of her short umpiring career as the day when she was given her first

game by herself without a mentor by her side. That was the Under 18 game on 30 May at Sanctuary Lakes. Since then, she has regularly umpired on both Saturday in the Under 18s and on Sunday in the Under 16s. This has enabled her to get lots of experience and develop the necessary skills to perform as a competent goal umpire.

Her goal for this year is to be selected in a junior grand final. On her present form in games and her commitment to training and improving her skills, she may well have her name read out come finals selection.

UMPIRES CORNERBy Graeme Hodgart

LAWS OF THE GAME – QUIZ #17

Last week’s question: The ball is thrown up by the field umpire in the forward pocket. Player A grabs the ball cleanly out of the ruck contest and is immediately and correctly tackled by Player B from the opposing team. After being held briefly, Player A breaks away and snaps a great goal. What happens next? The correct answer was (OPTION B) The field umpire awards a free kick to Player B for holding the ball.

This week’s question:The ball is kicked by Player A and while it is in transit the siren sounds. Although several players try to stop or touch the ball, they are unsuccessful and it eventually rolls through the goals. What happens next?

(a) The field umpire signals the end of the quarter, gives the all clear and a goal is awarded.

(b) The field umpire signals the end of the quarter.

(c) The field umpire signals the end of the quarter, gives the all clear and a behind is awarded.

Be sure to check out the correct answer in next week’s WRFL Footy Record.

WRFL Goal umpire Darcy Kirkpatrick is going from strength to strength this season.

32 DIVISION THREE

The top four teams in the competition all recorded comprehensive victories last weekend after a fixture that promised plenty of intrigue provided quite possibly the most lopsided round of the season.

Parkside ended Laverton’s top four aspirations to solidify an unreachable barrier with just two rounds remaining. Laverton required a few things to fall their way, including an upset win for Tarneit over an in-form Sanctuary Lakes to coincide with an unlikely victory over Parkside.

Unfortunately, neither necessity eventuated with the Sharks toppling the Titans by 58-points to coincide with Parkside’s 51-point victory. Laverton and Sanctuary Lakes will now meet each other in a clash that means significantly less than what it could have if the results fell in the Magpies’ favour.

The Wyndham Suns returned to its winning ways with a relieving 82-point win at Pennell Reserve. Many had the right to argue that Braybrook found themselves against a vulnerable premiership fancy at the right time. However, Matthew Stoodley’s men; who had lost five of their last six encounters, kicked six goals to one in the opening quarter to look more like the impressive side the football fraternity remembers.

The Suns won every quarter, including an eight goal to one third term which set up the morale boosting win. The Brookers will now travel to Tarneit to take on the Titans in a clash that has no bearing on September, however a victory is vital for the development of both teams.

North Sunshine had a significant number of late exclusions that affected their ability to compete with ladder leaders Albanvale for a full four quarters at Robert Bruce Oval. With up to six players forced to double up from the reserves, the Roadrunners sprang into action after conceding the opening two goals of the game.

Albanvale, eager to retrieve some important names to their best 22, found themselves in an unexpected dog fight and led by less than three goals with only three minutes to play in the first half. However, John Sirianni, David Azzopardi and Jamie Di Cicco combined for 19 of the Cobra’s 20 goals in the 77-point victory.

Albanvale and the Wyndham Suns do battle in

this week’s match of the round. The Suns took the points last time in controversial fashion, but they need to consolidate form as the ladder leaders must address certain aspects of their game heading towards the finals.

ROUND WRAPDIVISION THREE RESERVES

DIVISION THREE

It was Laverton who prevailed in the battle of the Magpies, downing Parkside by 15-points in a tight battle.

Laverton held a slender lead of just two points at quarter time, before Parkside looked the most likely over the middle two quarters, gaining back control of the match and leading by 10-points going into the last term.

However Laverton showed why they are serious finals contenders, booting five goals to one in a dominant final quarter to run home victors for the eighth time this season.

Jamie Bublenik, who has been arguably Laverton’s most valuable player in 2015, was again at his best finishing the day with four goals, while Anthony Cowley and Dejan Samovkovic were vital players on the day.

For Parkside, Christopher Hall kicked five goals, and both Enis and Srecko Salopek snagged two goals apiece, while Kain Perkins was judged their best player.

Another finals contender imposed their credentials in round 16, as Tarneit kicked away to a 67-point win over Sanctuary Lakes. It has put a major dent in the Shark’s finals hopes, however an unlikely berth is still possible.

Albanvale again had a very impressive win, this time putting North Sunshine to the sword by 131-points. Ange Messina was at his dominant best, snagging ten majors in a fine performance. The win secures Albanvale the minor premiership for 2015, and puts them in a fantastic position to take out the flag.

Finally, last Saturday saw this season’s first scoreless match, as the Wyndham Suns were given the ultimate percentage booster, outscoring Braybrook 167-points to zero.

Round 17’s most important game is without a doubt the clash between Sanctuary Lakes and Laverton, as the Sharks must win in order to keep their finals hopes alive, whilst a win for Laverton would seal them in the top four.

Another big game between Wyndham Suns and Albanvale could well be a preview to the Grand Final, and is sure to have fans on the edge of their seats.

Tarneit will host Braybrook, and will be hoping for a big win as they will be pushing for a top

two position, while Braybrook will be looking to respond strongly after its Round 16 nightmare.

Finally in a match for pride, North Sunshine will travel to Parkside and hope to upset the Magpies, who have looked very promising this season.

ROUND WRAPDIVISION ONE U18

DIVISION ONE – U18

Just two rounds are left until we hit finals football with third, fourth, fifth and sixth all level on points following the latest action from Round 16.Spotswood has all but confirmed their place as the minor-premiers, with a gaping 16-point advantage over the next best placed side in Werribee Districts. However the results of some big games in the form of Yarraville Seddon versus Altona and Deer Park hosting Hoppers Crossing would also have an impact on the shape of the top five.At Yarraville Oval, fans were left on the edge of their seats with a nail-biting game between two teams desperate to challenge come the end of the season, as Yarraville Seddon narrowly snuck away with a four-point win over Altona. It was the Eagles who got the fast start, kicking five first quarter goals to two to take a healthy 19-point lead heading into the first break. The second-quarter produced a scrappy affair as only two goals were kicked between both sides, Yarraville however, still holding the advantage.A win was a must for both teams starting the game sitting in fifth and sixth place, and both sides gave it their all in the premiership quarter, booting seven goals between them. While Altona found renewed hope heading into the last term trailing by just one goal, it wasn’t to be as the Eagles held on to remain in fifth spot. The goals were evenly spread across the field for the Eagles with Murray, Wright and Bouris all doubling up on the scoreboard. Blake, Linenert and Wagland produced solid games in the midfield to find their way into the best. For Altona, Aburrow and Reynolds were the only multiple goal kickers for the visitors, bagging two apiece, while Taylor, Rafferty and Dean were named in the best players with decent performances across the ground. In other results, Deer Park returned to its winning ways with victory over Hoppers Crossing by 32-points to move into third position, while Werribee Districts made light work of Albion running out 118-point winners. Round 17 will be highlighted by Altona and Hoppers Crossing who will both be hoping to chalk up a much needed win. Yarraville Seddon will host second-placed Werribee Districts, minor premiers Spotswood will

play host to Deer Park and Albion will have the bye. With just eight quarters left to play in the regular season, it will be interesting to see how the ladder will finish up, with the last two weeks set to have a significant impact on who will play a part in the 2015 finals series.

ROUND WRAPDIVISION TWO UNDER 18

Despite Caroline Springs’ inconsistent form over the past six-weeks, their handful of wins in that time and their competitiveness in losses has seen them remain in finals contention.Yet their chances were running out as they sat two-games back from fourth spot with only three-rounds to play, meaning their clash away to Sunshine was crucial. With the stakes high and both teams desperate for a win, a close first half couldn’t split the sides as the pair went into the main break level at 30-points apiece. Sunshine came into the game one-spot ahead of Caroline Springs and inaccurate kicking from the visitors in the third-term saw Sunshine take a three-point lead into the final quarter. With hopes of finals on the line, the Lakers pulled out all the stops to kick four-crucial goals and hold Sunshine to just two-goals to sneak home by eight-points, the final margin 10.11(71) to 9.9(63).Jarrod Rowan put in a fine performance with five-goals for the Lakers, while Haidyn Boothey was one of the best again. Sunshine was led by Luke Frahm who booted three-goals while Bradley Busuttil was also one of the best for the unlucky Kangaroos. Despite the result, Sunshine remain ahead of the Lakers on percentage, with both sides just four-points behind as they close in on fourth spot. Sanctuary Lakes had the chance to be that fourth placed side at the end of the round as they hosted bottom placed Albanvale. After a slow start, the Sharks turned their 14-point quarter time lead into a 52-point margin at the main break. They kept the Cobras scoreless for the next two terms and added five-goals themselves to lead by 87-points heading into the last term, before storming home with nine-final quarter goals to crush Albanvale by 136-points. Sanctuary Lakes’ depth was spread far and wide, with 11 goal kickers combining for 23 majors, the final margin 23.11(149) to 2.1(13).Of their host of goalkickers, Hayden Vogele was the best with five, while Aaron La Chimia added four and Errik Watts kicked three. Beau Pink tried hard for Albanvale as did Jaykeob Doehnert. The win sees the Sharks overtake Hoppers Crossing in fourth spot, after the Warriors suffered

a deflating 61-point loss at the hands of Newport Power, while Wyndhamvale also flexed their muscles in a 129-point rout of Glen Orden. So as we reach the penultimate round, every game becomes crucial. Round 17 is led by the returning Werribee Districts hosting a top-of-the-table clash against Wyndhamvale. Games between Hoppers Crossing versus Sunshine and Caroline Springs versus Sanctuary Lakes will be important in deciding that last finals spot, while Albanvale and Glen Orden face each other in a match for pride.Newport can enjoy their big win over the Warriors for another week with a bye, before returning to face the Tigers in Round 18.
