Some More RandomThoughtsby Joe McDonald Sr.Siemens Schakert Schkroo Up. (in 3 acts)For years the S.S. D III has been a favoriteof mine going back to a stick and papermodel built from plans in M.A.N. in the 40's.When Roden announced the relase of a1/32nd scale version in plastic, I resisted theurge. Eventually, I paid my December bills(including items not insurance covered frommy hospital adventure) and said "Go for it"!Michelle and Tiffany from BB59's gift shopduly ordered it on Monday, entered it in thecomputer on Tuesday and I bought it onWednesday.Typical Roden kit. Box art is for Udet's redfuselage with Lo in white. Just one thing, Icouldn't find any color reference to the lowerwing surfaces. Same late war German A.C.were in pale blue and some in light grey.Couldn't find printed references so went tothe catacombs while thinking "Go ahead, pick any color and panit it. No one will careor know if it's right or wrong especially in acase on "Big Mamie".I was stunned to find a DIII kit in 1/72nd byToko I had forgotten about. Cover color wasfor Udet's red and white job plus another inBrunswick Green. Well dig deeper andanother Red fuselage showed up in a 1/48thscale by Eduard with that white Lo on theside. But six different markings from Lo to V,to arrows, to starbursts, to skull andcrossbones to a swastika. All show loyenge

camo tips and bottoms. Lord, my memory really"schbooed up".

To make matters worse (or better) I reexaminednew 1/32nd kit carefully and found lightly stuck tothe bottom of another sheet of decals. Now I havedecals for both tops and bottoms. No pale grey orpale blue needed after all.

Look at the bright side! One in 1/72nd, one in1/48th, one in 1/32nd. Perfect. There's my 3 modelsfor the collection category for this year's Baycon if Ichoose to compete. Senility has it's own rewards.

Note to the judges No less than 3, No more than 5.No bands, No armies. No singles. Must have atheme.

Kit Review, Tamiya 1/48thDornier Do335 v11By Hal Marshman Sr

The Do335 was a most unusual Germanfighter developed in the latter part of WorldWar II. The revolutionary design featured twoDaimler Benz 603A2 liquid cooled engines, one in the conventional puller mode, and theother in a unique pusher position. The 2seater, which is the bird I elected to do, hadits second cockpit perched atop the center ofthe fuselage, giving the airplane a decidedlyhumpbacked look, prompting the Germansto nickname it the Anteater. Maximum speedwas a quick 478 mph, and the single seateris on record as having outrun a P51Mustang.Tamiya's Do335 is cast in the usualmedium gray, easy to work plastic, andfeatures nicely done engraved panel detail. The major assemblies go together well, asbefits a Tamiya offering. The only area thatoffered me difficulty, was the assemblymeant to be placed in the belly scope. Just awee mite tricky to line up. None of the othersmaller assemblies proved difficult to handle, and fit together like the proverbial glove. Both cockpit interiors are quite welldetailled, with my own seatbelts and buckles

being the only non kit additions. Instrumentpanel is typical Tamiya, instrument bezels withno inner detail. Sticks, rudder pedals, gunsight, and side consols are all wellrepresented. Speaking of the interiors, Tamiyacaps these with very thin, well detailedtransparencies. The cockpit coversthemselves include tabs on the right bottomthat fit into recesses in the cockpit sill, if youwant them in the open position. Personally, taking into consideration the well detailledinteriors, I don't know why anyone would wantthem shut, but if they do, those tabs are easilytrimmed away. The landing gear are quite well representedwith wheels, gear covers, and much supportequipment, in particular the nose gear.Wanting to show weight, I had to file a flat spotonto the tire bottoms (Don't forget the nosewheel). Tamiya provides a metal slug to putinto the nose for the purpose of keeping thenose wheel on the ground. The rear of theairplane is quite heavy, what with the cruciformtail surfaces, the rear prop, and the innards ofthe belly scoop.Armament consists of 2 MG151 cannon forthe upper front cowl, and a hole in the spinnerto represent the Mk103 cannon dornierinstalled through the propellor shaft. Otheraccessories are well cast, being the exhausts,DF loop, and pitot tube. There's a tricky littleclear plastic lens for the tail light, mountedtoward the top of the lower fin/rudderassembly, that I wish Tamiya had donedifferently. In my case, I installed a tiny MVrailroad clear lens, and built up the cover withTestor's Window Maker. I also installed 2 MVlenses in the port wing landing light assembly.I substituted a vinyl coated paper clip for thekit pitot tube, as I have terrible luck trying topreserve the kit part.

The President's ColumnMea culpa, mea culpa! I’m the reasonyour newsletter is late. Bob was waitingfor this column. I knew it had to be donebut I just couldn’t get to it. There wasalways another fire popping up. So Iapologize to you all, especially Bob.The trophies for BayCon have beenordered. There are still a fewunsponsored categories left. If you wouldlike to sponsor one of them you need tolet me know quickly. By the time you readthis it may be too late to get your name orbusiness listed on the trophy. For futurereference, If you have a business or knowsomeone that does, consider sponsoringa trophy pack as advertising. Weannounce the sponsor’s name whenreading the awards and their name isengraved on the trophy as sponsor, andwe produce a handout listing all of ourcorporate sponsors. You just need to getus a business card to do this. Trophypacks are now $32 each.Once again we will have a ‘club table ‘atBayCon. For those of you that would liketo sell off a few of your unwanted kits, books, tools, etc., see the instructions onthe club web site, in the forum.Remember there is only one 8’ table so

don’t bring a dozen cartons of kits. Giveeveryone a shot at some space. Theimportant points are the log sheet and thetags to mark your kits. Once again check theweb site for that info. Kevin Colburn has runthis table in the past but has said that hecannot do it this year so we are looking for avolunteer to take over. Do I see any raisedhands out there?BayCon is Sunday November 6th at the So.Attleboro Knights of Columbus. That’s just afew short weeks away. On top of that, Nov. 6is the return to Eastern Standard Time, (fallback). And once again here I am up on mysoap box trying to encourage themembership in general to show up andparticipate in some manner. This is, after all,our big event of the year. There is a lot to bedone that day and many hands make lightwork. (Is this beginning to sound like déjà vuall over again?) I write this message everyyear but it’s not my favorite paragraph towrite. You would think by now I’d have this ina standard format and just paste it in. Thereare a number of members that just show upevery year and do their jobs, (roles theyhave picked for themselves), I don’t ask inadvance, they’re just there. But there aremany other jobs to be done and any help isappreciated. Some of the things that need tobe done are registration, taking entry &admission fees, table setup, tablebreakdown, manning the front table, awardsceremony, raffle table, club table, and asalways judging, and so on. We havevolunteers that step in and fill these roles butthey need a break from time to time. Thinkabout filling in for a short while. As far asjudging goes “I don’t know how” is noexcuse. On the job training will be providedand your efforts will be appreciated. Pleasecome out and give us a hand.Just a few words on judging, with myapologies to Gian. Potential judges, pleaseread and familiarize yourself with the judgingguidelines that are posted on our websitebefore you go to the show. You don’t have

to read them all, just the ones thatpertain to the categories you mayconsider judging. I know I’ve said itmany time, I think judging is one of thebest ways to improve your modeling.Participating on a judging team can helpyou realize what goes into a goodmodel. The mistakes you can make andthe little things you can do to enhanceyour models. If you are not comfortablewith judging other peoples work askGian Montecalvo, our chief judge, toassign you to a team as an observer soyou can listen in on the judgesconversations. Another consideration isthat you are part of a team that makesdecisions as to the outcome. One of thereasons we use teams is we hope thateach member will bring his strong pointsto the decision and will serve as anadditional pair of eyes and see thingsthe others haven’t. You may haveexperience with the model in questionand the others not. Please remember, should you become deadlocked, don’targue about it, ask the Chief Judge tointervene and he’ll help your team cometo a decision.Once again this December we will havethe secret kit swap at the meeting. If youwish to participate just wrap a kit inXmas paper or brown paper ornewspaper to conceal the kit inside. Thekit should be complete and unstarted. Itcould be a kit from your stash that youno longer want, something you won in araffle that wasn’t quite your thing ormaybe a gift from your Aunt Effie thatthought a 1/72 B24 was a better choicethan the 1/35 Panzer IV you wanted. We’ll draw names and you’ll make yourpick. Now lets see what’s new on the shelvesor soon to hit them. Something thatcaught my eye in the Oct. issue of Scale

Auto Aoshima is advertising 1/32 scale‘material handling vehicles’. That translatesto fork lifts. Good idea, wrong scale? Why1/32 and not 1/24 or 1/25? They would beperfect for some of the trucks and tractortrailers by AMT and Italeri. Are there some1/32 trucks out there that I don’t knowabout besides a couple pickups? You cannow go to www.ScaleAutoMag.com andpurchase articles to download such as‘Painting Techniques’ or ‘How to BuildEngines’. Also in the Oct. issue in the‘Bench Racer’ column is a how to article onadding an aftermarket engine to a curbsidemodel. The review in Fine Scale of the newTamiya 1/32 P51D Mustang was allthumbs up, “…they pulled out all the stops”.There were some cons but very minor. It’sall of 550 parts including 17 magnets. Theylist the price as $165. It better be good! TheHobby Boss 1/32 F84 gets good marksalso and it’s about half the price. TheNovember 2011 Fine Scale issue is the“Start Building” issue. Almost all articles are‘HowTo’s’ or reviews of tools and glues, including ‘How to Enter a Contest’.Evidently a must read for all you guys.Revell Germany is releasing a 1/32 HeinkelHe 111P1, price listed is $110. Great WallHobby is announcing a 1/48 P61A BlackWidow. Dragon has released a 1/35Kettenkrad with 3.7cm PaK 36 and crew.I’ve seen photos of this model, veryinteresting. Bronco is bringing out a British17/25 pdr. AT gun. But my favorite is fromMIG Productions, a 1/35 Damaged Hiluxpickup. Price tag………(drum roll,please)…..$90. Let’s all run out and buy acouple. You can take one and convert itback to an undamaged one.[Ok, one ear just heard an Olive Gardencommercial. Evidently you can now get ahalf grilled panini. How do you half grill aPanini? Welcome to my world.]

I made no modifications to the figure, and mounted it onto another Monogram base.

I had given these figures to a friend who has nowpassed on, and his son recently returned them to me.Just thought you folks might get a kick out of seeinghow we did figures 40 years ago. have fun, Hal Sr

    Metal FiguresBy Hal Marshman Sr.

These figures were painted in the very early1970s, making them at least 40 years old. They are in 54 mm, and are painted inoriginal Imrey Risley enamels, before theEPA caused IR to remove the lead from theirformulae. Notice how vibrant the colors are, even after all these years. I've never gottencomfortable with artists oil paints, or for thatmatter, acrylics, probably being one of theunderlying reasons I seldom paint figuresanymore. Oh yes, the figures are cast inwhite metal, also no longer permittedbecause of the lead content, although I'mnow seeing figures in metal advertised again.Perhaps they've been able to reformulate thelead content..

The figure wearing the visored hatrepresents a member of the SD(Sicherheistdienst ), and is a MonogramMerite figure. That's right, Monogrammodels did a series of 54mm figures back inthe day. They also provided the black plasticbases. To modify the figure, I molded ridingbreeches out of the straight trousersMonogram cast the figure with.

(Kit Review Dornier Do335v11 Cont'dfrom Page 3)For paint, I used the diagram provided byTamiya to make soft masks for airbrushingthe finish. I use "Yellow Stuff" from thestationery store to hold the masks about 1/8inch from the surface, and apply the spraydirected vertically to the mask edge, givingme a scale soft demarkation line. betweencolors. I find those hard maskeddemarkation lines you often see to beinauthentic in appearance for late wasmachines. The paints used were WEMColorcaots for the upper RLM 81 Braunviolett and RLM 82 Hellgrune. Theundersurfaces were done with ModelMaster RLM 76 Hellblau. Most of theinterior work and landing gear wells werepainted with WEM RLM 02 Grau. (Myreferences say that RLM 02 was used, notthe RLM 66 you'd expect for a late warbird.)I thoroughly enjoyed this build, and canheartily recommend it to you. Matter of fact,I'm now very seriously considering thesingle seater for one of my winter builds thisyear.

    have fun, Hal Sr
