Alumni Prize Recipients Michael Farber and Cynthia Luo

Mikey’s “lifetime” career at RCDS ended with a bang. He was awarded the Alumni Prize, the School’s high-est honor, on the heels of being named a winner of a National Merit Scholarship and a high school All-American in lacrosse. Born and brought up in Harrison, he was a “lifer,” attending Rye Country Day from pre-kindergar-ten through 12th grade. The Farbers are a Rye Country Day School family. His mother, Pam, is a member of the Class of 1980, his sister, Allison, class of 2011, is a senior at Wellesley College, his brother, Andrew, class of 2012, is a junior at Harvard University, and his brother, Matthew, is a member of the RCDS class of 2016. Mikey is joining his brother at Harvard. He’s undecided about the future, but plans to take courses leading to a major in economics or engineering. At RCDS, he was committed not only to aca-demics, but also to community service and sports. He cites the School as “a great environment, with teach-ers and peers providing support and always going out of their way to help. They give you so many options that prepare you to do virtually anything,” he said. Academically, Mikey completed eight AP courses and exams, and also completed two post-AP courses. He was a leader of Saturday Enrichment tutorials (SET), an RCDS literacy program for Port Chester grade-school students, and was co-leader of the Student Leadership Council, which organizes and

runs various community activities. During the summer, Mikey worked in the RCDS ACTION program, providing enriched studies to area students. He also worked in Let’s Get Ready, a national organization that provides college counseling and SAT preparation assistance to local students. He was a member of the Young Physicists Tournament team, and during his four years in the Upper School was a campus tour guide for prospective students. His awards include The Class of 2008 Award in his freshman year, the Harvard University Book Award, the Latin Award, the Wildcat Award for both soccer and lacrosse, and the Coaches’ Award for both soccer and lacrosse. Mikey was the goaltender for both teams, was captain of the lacrosse team for the past two years, and was selected to the All-Fairchester team in both sports. This past spring he received the scholar athlete award from the Fairchester Athletic Association, and was named an All-American in lacrosse. “I’m a big sports fan and root hard for the Yankees and football Giants,” he said. He didn’t explain how he plans to handle that at Harvard in the heart of Red Sox and Patriots country.

Alumni Prize Recipients Michael Farber and Cynthia Luo

Her senior year at RCDS turned out to be a dream come true for Cynthia. She was awarded the Alumni Prize, the School’s highest honor; won a National Merit Scholarship; and cheered home the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA championship. “My dad and I are huge Spurs fans, and I just knew they’d win,” she said. Add to that her selection to the New York State School Music Association All-State Chorus, her role as a starter on the RCDS league-champion fencing team, and four additional honors on Prize Day, and it’s obvi-ous that things couldn’t get much better. When she attends Harvard in the fall, she plans to focus on studies in English, biology and pub-lic health, with the objective of going on to medical school. “Since elementary school, I’ve wanted to be a pediatrician,” she declared. Cynthia entered Rye Country Day in the ninth grade and feels very strongly about the School, “I’ve been lucky to be here. It’s both an opportunity and a blessing. Our teachers are incredible — they’re devoted to their craft and inspire you every day to care about the School and the community.”

She completed her career at RCDS with nine AP courses and ten AP exams, and with nine major awards, including the Alumni Prize. She won the Oberlin College Book Award, the Cornell University Book Award, the George Washington University Medal for math, the Bausch & Lomb Award for science, and department awards for English, Science, Math, and Music. Cynthia was president of the Asian American Club and the Math Contest Club, contributed recipes to Crop, the student newspaper (“I find it very thera-peutic to bake at home”), was a member of the Young Physicists Tournament team and the Cedar Street Dance Company, an executive in Peer Leadership, and an oral proficiency intern mentoring other students in Chinese, the native language of her parents. She was a member of every honors choir, and had a “terrific experience” acting in the School’s one-act play pro-gram in her senior year. She also was a volunteer piano teacher in Songcatchers, a summer music pro-gram for youngsters in the New Rochelle area. During the last three years, Cynthia attended the Saturday morning Columbia University Honors Program and took courses in astronomy, relativity, nano-technology, psychology, cosmology, and genetics. Also, during the past three summers she served as an intern at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in Tarrytown, where she conducted research on antibodies for treating breast cancer. Her work there won her first place in the medicine and health category at the Tri-County Science Fair in White Plains in her junior year.

Headmaster’s Prize Recipients Jason Goettisheim, Franchesca Peña, and Hendrick Townley

The Headmaster’s Prize is presented at Prize Day to “that student who models leadership, courage, or academic excellence.” This year’s Prize was shared by seniors Jason Goettisheim, Franchesca Peña, and Hendrick Townley.

It seems as though the Headmaster’s Prize for “lead-ership, courage or academic excellence” could have been designed for Jason, who has wrung the most out of his six years at RCDS. He received the award on his way to Brown University, where he says he probably will continue to “dabble” in a broad range of activities. He’s enrolled in the bio-medical engineering program, but also is interested in public policy and education studies, as well as continuing some work in the theater and the study of Chinese. Jason, who entered RCDS in the seventh grade, graduated as a National Merit finalist, having taken nine AP courses and twelve AP exams. He was recognized as an AP Scholar of Distinction in 2013 and was elected to the National Chinese Honor Society in 2012. Over his career he also won the James P. Godfrey Award for community service, the Chinese Department Award, Science Department Award, University of Pennsylvania Book Award, Christine Nelson Award and four Founder’s Awards for community service. He credits his teachers for the road he trav-eled. “I owe everything to them — I wouldn’t be inter-ested in so many things if I hadn’t come to school here,” he said, noting that “they encourage you to try

Jason Goettisheimeverything and engage in the community to help you grow as an active citizen.” Indeed, he hasn’t quite left. Jason is a class agent and 2014 alumni board representative, and this past summer taught a history course in ACTION, an RCDS enrichment program for students in surrounding communities. In his sophomore year, Jason co-founded the Student Centered Outreach Partnership and Enrichment program (SCOPE) in which twice a week he and classmates taught various subjects and tutored 40 fourth and fifth graders from Port Chester schools. On Saturdays, he helped Port Chester youngsters in the RCDS Saturday Enrichment Tutorial (SET), a literacy program. He also volunteered at the Carver Center, where he helped local grade school students with their homework. For three summers, he volunteered as a piano teacher in Songcatchers, a music program for elementary and middle school students in New Rochelle. His Senior Term service project was helping build a house in Nicaragua. Jason was editor and chief of Crop, the school newspaper; director of new student affairs for Peer Leadership; president of the Environmental Club;

an oral proficiency intern teaching Chinese to RCDS Middle School students; and a member of the student-faculty chamber orchestra. He was a member of the Young Physicists Tournament team and, as a senior, was one of four presenters in the School’s third-place finish in the international tournament. During his career, he staged-managed eight theater programs, and last year directed in the one-act play program. Meanwhile, he was one of three starters on the fencing team, which last season was undefeated and league champion, and was also a member of the cross country team.

Franchesca PeñaFranchesca, an incoming freshman at the University of Pennsylvania, won the Headmaster’s Prize to highlight her three-year career at Rye Country Day School. She came here in the 10th grade, commuting daily from her home in the Bronx, where she grew up with a strong interest in community service and a “pas-sion for running.” She has a broad range of interests that include urban studies, writing, continued service work, and running in a half-marathon in either New York or Philadelphia. The fields of law, politics, and education also are on her “maybe” list. Academically, Franchesca completed six AP courses while also winning the School’s James P. Godfrey Award for community service in 2013. She was a member of the concert choir, twice acted in the Drama Department’s one-act plays, and participated in the Model U.N. program. As a sophomore, she took an English writing class at the Brown University sum-mer program. She’s fluent in three languages, grow-ing up with Spanish and studying French since the sixth grade. Her parents are natives of the Dominican Republic, and Franchesca and her two older sisters spoke both English and Spanish at home. Among her major activities were serving as a student executive in the Peer Leadership program, tutoring local public school students in a Saturday morning literacy program, and mentoring RCDS Middle School students in a Student of Color program. In 2013, she helped organize a RCDS diversity conference for Fairchester middle school students. Franchesca joined classmates to build a house in Nicaragua for her RCDS Senior Term service project. At home in the Bronx, Franchesca also has served as a volunteer, helping young students with homework in a local community center, and in an ele-mentary school where she helped students with after-school programs. Relaxation comes from running, she said. Franchesca was a captain of both girls’ cross country and track and field teams in her junior and senior years and won the Coaches’ Award for both as a senior. She ran the mile and 800 meters, and unlike many athletes, “loved practice and the spirit it stimulated among the team members. I always looked forward to practice.”

While excited about moving on, she said she’ll miss her friends and her teachers. “I enjoyed my teach-ers and the challenge of their high expectations of us,” she said.

Hendrick (Henry) TownleyHenry capped a distinguished RCDS career by winning the Headmaster’s Award, as well as a National Merit Scholarship. He’s headed to Yale University to study physics and math, with an eye on fitting in music and theater, as well. “I’m passionate about singing and act-ing, as well as a lot of other things” he said. He was born in Hong Kong, where his father, Dan, and his mother, Birgit, a native of Hamburg, Germany, worked, met, and married. Henry is the fam-ily trail blazer at RCDS — his brother, David, is a mem-ber of the Class of 2016, and his sister, Charlotte, is an eighth-grader. On his way to a National Merit Scholarship, he completed 10 AP courses and 11 AP exams, and com-pleted the School’s math curriculum by the end of his junior year. As a result, he studied linear algebra and multi-variable calculus in his senior year. Fluent in German from speaking the language at home with his mother, Henry researched and wrote a paper on “Anti-German Sentiment” that received the rare honor of publication in The Concord Review, the only academic journal that publishes research papers of high school students. He won the Dartmouth Book Award, Choral Award, Drama Award and four Founder’s Awards. Henry was president of the Drama Club, president of the Environmental Club, president of the choir, and captain of the school’s Young Physicists Tournament team that placed third in the international tournament, where he presented the team’s problem on “water wake angles.” Henry appeared in nine theater productions over his four years in the Upper School. His lead roles included Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, and Paul in You Can’t Take It with You. Meanwhile, as a sophomore, he played Leo Bloom, the co-lead in The Producers, a community theater production at the Westchester Sandbox Theater in Port Chester. Henry sang in the concert choir and in the WildScats, an honors a cappella choir, and in the sum-mer taught elementary and middle school students music, guitar and theater in Songcatchers, a program for elementary and middle school students in New Rochelle. He was a member of the RCDS team that spent nine days in Nicaragua building a house as a Senior Term project. Sports also are an interest. Henry gave up team tennis to concentrate on the theater, but stayed with soccer, playing defense for RCDS. He was named to the Fairchester all-league team in his senior year. And he’s proud of rooting for both the U.S. and Germany in the recent World Cup competition. “I’m a big fan of Rye Country Day School,” he says. “The teachers are phenomenal. And they, with upper classmen and others, inspire you to succeed.”
