    Three Unconscious Traps of Cigarettes

    Hello, my name is Garry Johnson Master Hypnotherapist, I've written this report becauseI've found that in over 18 years of helping people to make changes, there are a few

    important distinctions I've made in regards to the success of stopping smoking for good.

    If youve ever decided to quit smoking and found yourself right back under the control ofthe weed stick, then its probably because youve been trapped by one or all of The ThreeUnconscious Traps Of Cigarettes.

    I can absolutely say in all my years of experience, that it doesn't matter what you choose todo to stop smoking from cold turkey to Nicotine replacements to hypnosis, if these 3crucial things are not understood, and dealt with properly, then there is a 95% chance thatyou wont quit, will find it very difficult to quit, or if you do quit, you will go back to it atsome point.

    But when they ARE taken care of in a complete and proper way, the numbers will work in

    your favour. Weve found that with the right strategy and support that 86% of our clientswill stop at their first session, but the future follow up sessions are where the deep andlasting changes occur. Our success rate with clients who stop smoking within the length ofthe program suggested is 96%, and we track our clients every 6 months for a minimum of 2years to confirm their long term success.

    Unconscious Trap #1 ~ The Addiction Factor?

    I strongly believe that the first thing you need to do when deciding to stop smoking, is tounderstand the first unconscious trap that I call Physiology. While it might seem obvious to

    some, most people overlook this one and are forever in the grips of the, quote-unquote, Allcontrolling weed!

    The first thing you need to do is determine whether or not YOU are truly physiologicallyaddicted to the nicotine or the components in the cigarettes you need to do this for 2reasons;

    1. If you are, then you will need to respect that there is a physiological need and weanyourself off in a gradual way, stopping too suddenly will have very negative effectsIF you are physiologically addicted notice that I said IF.2. If you are NOT physiologically addicted, but think or believe you are? Then therewill be an unconscious fear that if you get don't get your fix that there will be adverseeffects for you, and that fear will either prevent you from stopping or make theprocess very difficult.

    So the question you're asking now is, Well, how do I find out?well the first thing to do isanswer the following question Have you now, or have you ever woken up because of thecraving for the cigarette?... and before you answer that, it doesn't mean waking up and thenwanting one, I mean woken up because of the craving?

    Is Your Answer Yes or NoIf the answer is Yes then you may be physiologically addicted, so begin to plan aprocess of gradually cutting down and giving your body healthy nutrients, vitamins andminerals which we'll discuss in your program

    If the answer is No then the chances of you being physiologically addicted are slim tonone I find that most people will answer No but need some more reassurance that it'snot physiological so let's take this a little further

    Please remember that I'm not questioning whether or not Nicotine is an addictivesubstance I know it's what's considered a Class A Drug Highly addictive, along withCrack Cocaine, Morphine and others What I am questioning is whether or not YOU arephysiologically addicted to it

    How Much Do You Need To Be Addicted?

    Let's consider quantity - In order for the average human being to become physiologically

    addicted to nicotine, based on the small trace amount you get from a cigarette, you'd have tosmoke approximately 80 cigarettes a day, over 3 large packs a day.

    Let's consider symptoms - When an individual is physiologically addicted to a Class ADrug and they are cut off from it for longer than 5 hours and don't get a fix, there are a fewthings that might happen in extreme cases their body will go into shock and die in mildcases they will have psychological fits of rage, throwing things and become very dangerousto themselves and others around them they need to be restrained in light cases they willhave hallucinations and won't have a very good grip on what's real or what's not.

    This means that if you regularly have times in your life where you can go 5 or more hours

    without one and you don't get any of those symptoms, then you are NOT physiologicallyaddicted this includes; plane flights, bus rides, sleep and even those times when you justget caught up with what you're doing and you don't even think about it for a while, or you getdistracted and completely forget about it for a period of time.

    So what are those physical sensations you get when you don't have it for a while? People arequick to call them withdrawal symptoms, when in fact they are not consider this how

    long have you been smoking?... for that many years you've been putting into your body asubstance that contains anywhere from 500 to 6000 different chemicals if all of a suddenone day you stop? There is a good chance that your body may miss some of thosecomponents, but missing something and needing it are 2 different things.

    Have you ever been in a relationship which ended suddenly for whatever reason? For aperiod of time you feel like you needed the other person, but really you were only missingthem, and after a certain time you were able to move on if not completely at least to somedegree, and in that missing phase a person may even go through many physical symptoms,that's what happens with your body and the cigarette. It gets used to having those chemicalsaround and when they don't show up, it lets you know.

    So hopefully at this point you know which side of the fence you're TRULY on, and now you

    can take the appropriate course of action. If there was any part of you that was held back bythat trap, you can now let it go and move on to reclaiming the Tobacco Free You.

    Unconscious Trap #2 ~ Identity

    The second unconscious trap is very subtle, yet very powerful, and ALWAYS overlooked,and I call that trap Identity. In certain fields which study human behaviour, Identity is

    one of the highest levels of change that a person can go through, topped only by a Spiritualexperience (which by the way doesn't always bring about any changes in behaviours).

    The best example of Identity changes are people who have Split Personalities when

    they switch between personalities most times they have no recollection of the otherpersonalities present, they are THAT ONE fully. I remember when I was younger and I readabout documented cases where there was a patient who switched personalities and eyecolour changed from brown to blue in front of the therapist, cases where rings will fit onepersonality and won't fit the other. One personality having diabetes gets a blood test andshows high blood sugar and when switched to another personality that blood test is doneagain (before it's physically possible for the human body to flush the blood) and blood sugarwas back to normal, and thats just one of the mind boggling effects that therapists havedocumented.

    What does all this have to do with you becoming tobacco free?

    If everyday for as many years as you've been smoking youve affirmed in any way toyourself, I am a smoker, well what you had been doing was accepting a false identity astruth and over time your unconscious mind starts to believe it. So if you don't properlyrelease that false identity and all of a sudden you no longer smoke, there's a part you feelinglike there is a void, like all of a sudden you are not yourself.

    The only way the ego mind will release a false identity is if it gets another one that's moretrue and undeniable (it can't knowingly live with a lie for too long), so let's see if that identityis true or not.

    Let Me Prove To You ThatYou Are NOT A Smoker!

    In a moment I'm going to propose something that on the surface may seem a littleoutrageous, but I'll continue to prove it, and since you are not here with me to give me theanswers, I'll use an example of a client I saw yesterday, and ask that you just fill in your owninformation appropriate to the questions ok?

    First I'd like you to think again about how long you've smoked? In this example I'm going touse 20 years. How much do you smoke? I'll use the average 1 pack a day. Now here's myproposition. Even though Im sure it's not the case, I propose that even if you had smoked afull pack of cigarettes every single day from the very first day you had one, all the way tonow without missing a day even if that was the case I still propose that you've spent asignificant more amount of those 20 years as a clean air breather than you have as a smoker.

    Now remember to fill in the years you've smoked into this example and the amount ofcigarettes you smoke, and the proposition still stands, even for those of you who are on the

    higher ends of those numbers 50, 60 or more years 1, 2, 2 packs doesn't matter!You've still spent a significant more amount of that time as a clean air breather than you haveas a smoker.

    I usually get a bit of a puzzled look at this point. Let's continue with proving my statementnow. I'm going to continue using 20 years and 1 pack a day to make my point, but before I dothat, how long would you say it takes to smoke a cigarette? Think of an answer mostpeople say 5-10 minutes depending on the weather. Let's say it's in the middle at 7 minutes.

    If every time you went out to have a cigarette there was a little angel on your shoulder with astopwatch, and the angel started the timer every time you put the cigarette in your mouth andstopped it every time you took it out, what would you say, of that 7 minutes, is the ACTUALsmoking time? The rest of the time you're just holding it, not smoking it. How long wouldyou say? Most people say about 2-3 minutes of ACTUAL smoking time.

    In over 18 years of working with clients, I have yet to find anyone that can make a cigarettelast longer than 60 seconds of ACTUAL smoking time. Thats 20 full 3 second drags... one-one-thousand... two-one-thousand... three-one-thousand... you have to be very creative andthink about it quite a lot to do that.

    If we go back to our example and say that 20 years ago you started smoking and decided tohave 1 pack a day, and the way you were going to distribute those cigarettes was on the hour

    every hour you decided to have 1 smoke. Let's round off a large pack to 24 cigarettes insteadof 25, just to make the numbers more round, and let's give you the benefit of the doubt andassume that you could do a full 60 seconds and you had the luxury of time to complete everycigarette from beginning to end every time.

    That would mean that 1 minute of every hour you were smoking and 59 minutes of everyhour of those 20 years you returned back to what you are genetically designed to be which isa clean air breather. Yes, you interrupted your day 20 times or so but your default was being aclean air breather, and this is a fact you can not deny.

    Empowering You Not Scaring You

    And just to get another perspective, let's say you got tired of doing one on the hour every

    hour so you decided to get them all out of the way one time. That would mean you spend 24minutes of ACTUAL smoking time and 23 hours plus a little more of every single day ofthose 20 years NOT SMOKING.

    I present it this way because one of the biggest issues that people have when trying to stopsmoking is that they make it out to be this all consuming monster, a daunting task, I've beendoing it 20 YEARS! Well no wonder it seems undoable, you had been making it a biggerissue than it really is, the reality is that it's a 1 minute behaviour that you participate inthroughout your day, but not as life consuming as you thought. When you see that it's reallyonly a very small amount of time you spend doing it, then you turn the table on it and make it

    seem more doable. Empowering you instead of scaring you. Hopefully I've done at least thatwith these examples.

    The key thing to remember here is that, it's what you did, it's not now, nor ever will be, whoyou are, if it was then smoking would be your default and the numbers we just went throughwould be reversed.

    Say to yourself out loud or to yourself with conviction, I choose to FREE myself from thesmoker identity now I know, it's not who I am it's what I did. I am genetically designed tobe a clean air breather.

    The Final Trap #3 ~ The RelationshipWe've determined whether or not you are physiologically addicted (and I'm certain that mostof you are not). We've established that your identity is that you are already a clean airbreather and NOT a Smoker. Now we are ready to understand and address the final, andwhat I consider to be, most important part about being tobacco free forever.

    The third unconscious trap is what I call The Relationship for those of you who are leftbrained analytical thinkers this may be a stretch for you but remember that if the level ofthinking you used before wasn't able to help you be successful maybe it's time for aparadigm shift.

    What I mean by The Relationship is that time and time again when I sit down withsomeone who's smoked for a period of time, they refer to the cigarettes as if there was a

    relationship that was going on. It's like my buddy, My friend, My Confidant, andwhile your conscious mind fully understands that it's an inanimate object, your unconsciousmind sees it as a relationship. Lets face it, your conscious mind hasn't been successful atstopping the behaviour as of yet, so it's probably a good idea to look at this behaviour anddeal with it from the perspective and level of mind where it seems to have the strongest grip,your unconscious.

    Without a doubt this is the most overlooked and undervalued aspect of quitting, and in myexperience it's most definitely the one aspect that can make the biggest difference in theoutcome of your effort to be tobacco free. Ive found that if this aspect is taken lightly,stopping may be a very difficult journey. If on the other hand it's addressed fully andproperly, then the rate at which you stop and the ease will give you a buzz that the smokingcould never match.

    An Unconditional Friend

    Where am I going with this? Well let's say that 20 years ago (using the same time frame as in

    the last example), 20 years ago a friend shows up at your door, and came unconditionally toserve you the way you need to be served. It never nagged you, never judged you, never saidno, was there in the good times, there to help you in the bad times, it was there to assure youcould be around some people and to help you to be away from others, it became a reminderfor you to take a break, treat yourself or just plain have alone time, and the list goes on.

    Sometime in that 20 years you started to realize that every time the friend came and went itleft behind a little bit of poison, and whether the poison was mentally with stresses ornegative emotions or physically with sickness, illness or disease, it doesn't matter becausethey're both the same to me, and the poison started to out weigh the benefits of the friend, soyou decide to stop

    Does that scenario sound about right? For most of you it will, and so you need to bringclosure to that relationship on your terms. A final goodbye, a send off, an honourabledischarge, not see you later, stand by just in case goodbye for good! The faster you get tothat place and the more genuine you are with that process, the better stopping smoking willbe for you.

    To your unconscious mind it's equivalent to having a best friend around and then all of asudden they are taken from you, and you never get the chance to bring closure to therelationship it will always feel unsettled and if you don't say goodbye, then anyone oranything that assists you in quitting will be like a parent telling you that you can't hangaround with your best friend anymore. You'll feel resentful and most people will probablysneak out to meet it at the local grocery store at the first opportunity.

    When you say goodbye, you and the friend know that it's on your terms no one else's.

    Let me share a quick story to illustrate the importance of this trap, and then I'll cover a

    couple of research projects that prove hypnosis is the best option for quitting smoking.

    10 Years Of Failures Because Of One Unconscious Trap!

    12 years ago, I had a client come to me for stopping smoking and she been trying to stop for10 years she tried everything zyban, patch, nicorette, herbal remedies, stuff I hadn'teven heard of. She had even worked with other hypnotists one on one and in group sessions,

    but everything had minimal success and she was still smoking.

    She had been referred to me by a friend of hers who got great results with our program. We

    sat down and I started going through these 3 unconscious traps to find out which one was preventing her from being successful. She kind of figured she wasn't physiologicallyaddicted otherwise the medications should have been successful. She easily let go of theidea that it was who she was, but when we got to The Relationship and I mentioned thatshe had to say goodbye to her friend, she broke down in tears and cried for a good 15-20minutes. After the crying was done, I told her that because failure is not an option whenworking with me, she had to free herself from this trap and go home to say goodbye to hercigarettes before I was willing to do a hypnosis session for her.

    Two weeks later she scheduled for a Monday night. When she came in I asked her what shedid to say goodbye, and she said, Well I have to be honest I tried over a dozen things I

    got mad at them I smoked until I almost got sick I soaked them in vinegar and looked atand smelled them for an entire day I got so upset with them that I bought a full carton oneday and put it in a tin can and burnt the whole thing up but nothing seemed to feel right...

    With a little bit of concern I asked, Well how did you say goodbye? She said that on theFriday before booking her appointment, she got that the only way she'd be free of it was ifshe put it to rest... so yes you guessed it she set out for Sunday night to be the funeral. I

    have to give it to her because she played full out. She set aside specific time, dressed in black, did a whole ceremony and included everything associated with the cigarettesincluding any pictures she had of herself with the cigarettes, and buried everything!

    3 Hours Of Crying... And Then A Breakthrough

    She said she cried for over 3 hours, but that something interesting happened, she said thatafter about the 2 hour mark of crying, that there was a shift that occurred for her. She saidthat every time she had tried to stop smoking in the past she always felt uneasy, jittery,mentally and physically, but this time everything just went still. She got that this was thefirst time in her life that she had the opportunity to bring closure to an importantrelationship, before the relationship came to an abrupt end.

    A little bit of background here is that she had just spent the last 10 years dealing with 5deaths (friends and family members) who died unexpectedly, accidents and illnesses, andthe only thing she had to see her through those times was what she called her Rock, hercigarettes. Getting the chance to give it an honourable discharge was a very spiritual thingfor her.

    She went on to say that she came in to the appointment to tell me how she did it, the impact it

    had on her and that she felt that she didn't need to do the hypnosis anymore. I said, Nowhold on a minute here, you sure you're not being too cocky? If for 10 years you've beentrying all this stuff and this is the only thing you've done differently, how can you say that?

    I believe your success will be determined before you come

    in for your first hypnosis session and it will be based on

    how fully you feel you've done what you needed to, to bring

    closure to that relationship AND if youve freed yourself

    from the other 2 traps.

    I usually suggest something simple like a goodbye letter, thank the friend for serving youthe ways that it had, and end the letter in the tone of the best way to serve me now is tonever be here again Good Bye!

    She said that this was the first time in 47 years that she went 24 hours and it didn't even crossher mind as an option, and she was smoking 2 packs a day. She said congruently, Thatrelationship is done!

    A comparative review of the effectiveness ofhypnosis, an advanced method of hypnosis, andother interventions used for the cessation ofsmoking. This section of the report presents

    some of the findings from a study looking atall methods of smoking cessation, includingstandard hypnotherapy techniques andcompares those to a specially developedadvanced method of hypnotherapy forsmoking cessation.

    High quit rates for hypnosiscompared to other methodsA larger meta-analysis of research intohypnos is to a id smoking cessa t ion(Chockalingam and Schmidt 1992) (48 studies,6,020 subjects) found that the average quit ratefor those using hypnosis was 36%, making

    hypnosis the most effective method found inthis review with the exception of a programwhich encouraged pulmonary and cardiac

    Law and Tang (1995) looked at 10 randomized trials, carried out between 1975 and 1988, of hypnosis in smoking

    cessation. They found that the effect of hypnosis was highly statistically significant. The research they examined involved646 subjects and cessation rates at 6 months post-treatment ranged from 10% to 38% (the average figure was 24%).

    Table 2 (previous page) shows that the meta-analysis of Law and Tang confirms, to a large extent,the meta-analysis of Chockalingam and Schmidt (1992); in both cases hypnosis appears as the mosteffective form of intervention to achieve smoking cessation with the exception of groups who arehighly motivated to quit for medical reasons, such as those with existing heart or pulmonary

    problems.

    A more recent study, by Ahijevych et al (2000), produces a similar overall figure for the success ofhypnosis. This study looked at a randomly selected sample of 2,810 smokers who participated insingle-session, group hypnotherapy smoking cessation programs sponsored by the American LungAssociation of Ohio. A randomly selected sample of 452 participants completed telephoneinterviews 5 to 15 months after attending a treatment session. 22 percent of participants reported notsmoking during the month prior to the interview.

    The results discussed so far indicate that when the bulk of random trials are considered hypnosis isshown to be the most effective intervention for achieving smoking cessation. Yet this is only halfthe storymany of the trials discussed so far have used very brief sessions, usingstandardized hypnosis techniques, many have in fact taken place in group sessions (making itdifficult to tailor to each individual's needs) and have not necessarily been carried out by

    expert practitioners of hypnosis. If, under these circumstances, hypnosis can achieve such positive outcomes in terms of enabling smokers to quit, then what might be achieved usingprograms of hypnosis which are carried out by expert hypnotists and are tailored to the needs of theindividual who wants to stop smoking?

    Nuland and Field (1970) found an improvement rate of 60% in treating smokers with hypnosis. Theincreased effectiveness was achieved by a more personalized approach, including feedback (underhypnosis) of the client's own personal reasons for quitting. These researchers also employed atechnique of having the client maintain contact by telephone between treatments and utilized self-hypnosis in addition.

    Von Dedenroth (1968) devised an innovative unique approach which appears to have beenextremely successful. He began by inquiring how long the individual had smoked, whether theyrecalled why they had begun, whether they had ever tried to stop smoking, why they wanted to stopsmoking at this particular point in time, what benefit, if any, they felt that they derived from

    smoking, at what specific times they felt the need most strongly (after meals, before breakfast etc.),and finally he asked them how many cigarettes they smoked. Von Dedenroth believed thatanswering these questions revealed, at least in part, the smoker's own feelings regarding his/hersmoking and the reasons for wanting to give up the habit. The therapy consisted of a series ofsessions where tips and suggestions were given both in and out of hypnosis, and continued until thesubject was tobacco free.

    Von Dedenroth found that his use of a sequence of hypnosis sessions enabled 94% of1000 subjects to stop smoking (when checked at 18 months).

    Practice Builders Study (2000)This research was carried out on 300 subjects (beginning in January 2000 and continuing until March2002) who responded to an advertisement. A 'blind trial' technique was usedsubjects were notaware that they were taking part in a research project although they all ticked a box on their intakeforms saying that they understood that the hypnotist's methods were always being measured, tested

    and improved, and that results would be collated and studied. Client confidentiality was assured sothat their data could be used but not their names and these subjects were randomly allocated to receiveeither 'standard' hypnotherapy or a special formulation of hypnotherapy which Practice Builders hastermed 'advanced therapy'.

    51% of respondents were male and 49% female; the median age of all subjects was 44 years. Norespondents had previous experience of hypnosis51% of subjects had tried nicotine patches, 14%had tried nicotine gum, 7% had tried acupuncture, 6% had tried using a nicotine inhaler and 30% had

    previously tried to quit using willpower alone. 11% of subjects had not previously tried to quitsmoking.

    For all subjects:The client was interviewed to make sure that they wanted to stop smoking for their own reasons, andwere not being pressured into it by someone else (doctor, loved one etc.). Before the actual hypnosis,the client (or subject) was put through a qualification interview to determine they would be good

    candidates for the program. This was to assess their motivation, their history with smoking, theattempts and failures theyve had, their fears and concerns around stopping smoking and hypnosis.

    Hypnosis was then fully explained to the client, as well as how the conscious and the subconsciousmind works, and any myths debunked (such as, you cannot make someone do something they don'twant to do, hypnosis is not sleep or unconsciousness, you will be aware of everything that is going onand will remember everything that happened in hypnosis after the session, etc.).     For subjects treated with the standard technique:A general stop smoking technique is used. This type of standard technique doesn't allow for much inthe way of personalizing a session, as it is the same for every client. The client is then emerged.

    For subjects treated with the advanced technique:Hypnosis is induced using a progressive test induction tailored to the client. Ideomotor techniques are

    used to gain subconscious communication. The client's own motivations, and values are utilized inthe session using a combination of metaphors and suggestions. Additional change technologies areincluded according to the client's processing style. At the end of the session, the client is emergedfrom hypnosis.

    FindingsQuit rates were established through telephone interviews 1 month and 6 months after the first session

    of treatment. Of those who received 'advanced therapy', 95% had quit smoking after 1 session. Theremaining 5% received additional sessions of treatment leading to a further 1.3% of the groupquitting smoking. In total therefore, at 6 months, 97% of those who received 'advanced therapy' hadquit smoking.
