Reception to Year 5 Swimming Week 8 - 18 - 22 March 2019
Parent helpers welcome for Rec - Yr 2
From the Principal
Term 1 Week 7 Newsletter No. 04
15 March 2019

Dear Families,
Composite classes
At Modbury School we have
composite classes. There have been
some misconceptions about
composite classes (when two year
levels are taught by the one teacher)
within our community. Some of the
questions being asked stem from the
preconception of education today.
We draw on what we know from our
own experiences at primary school.
Education for today’s digital learner is
much different; our curriculum is much
broader and emphasis is on the ability
to transfer skills and understandings
into different contexts, enhancing
metacognition and individualized
learning.
There seems to be preference by
parents to have their child in a
“straight” year level class, however if
we compare our classes, be they
composite or straight and regardless
of age differences, there is often very
little difference in the student cohort
learning needs or scope of the
curriculum needed to be taught. For
example; a year 3 class could have
individual students that still require
access to year one curriculum (say in
Maths and Writing) while others may
require extension in number and
algebra from the year 5 curriculum.
We know that not all children learn at
the same rate or have the same level
of skills in all areas of the curriculum
therefore giving all students exactly
the same task at the same time is
futile.
Having a task however with multi entry
points, where feedback is given during
the task process, and assessments
done on completion, enables students
to work to their full potential.
Fortunately, as we engage our
inquisitive and innovative learners, we
always look for your child’s prior
learning at the start of any new
learning and then ascertain the next
developmental steps needed to be
explicitly taught. Through inquiry,
students can then take the explicitly
taught skills and understandings to
their own personal level. Importantly it
should be noted that at all times
students are closely monitored. Data is
continually being collected as
evidence that the individual student’s
learning outcomes are being
achieved.
Originally, as a means to combat
funding restraints, the practice of
combining multiple aged students into
composite classes has remained over
many decades. The advantages for
our students not just academically but
socially, emotionally and physically
have been realised and well
researched.
Composite classes have therefore
become a common practice in most
schools across Australia.
Parent Engagement
In the last newsletter I looked at Parent engagement in education. It basically
is about parents and carers, schools and communities working together to
ensure that every parent can play a positive role in their child's learning,
school community, sport and social life.
Parents and families play a very important role in supporting their child's
education. Research has shown that when schools and families work together,
children do better, stay in school longer, are more engaged with their school
work, go to school more regularly, behave better, and have better social
skills.
Parent engagement also results in longer term economic, social and
emotional benefits. The Australian Government has many initiatives and
resources to help parents, schools and communities work together to improve
their child's learning.
To help your child develop their literacy and numeracy skills a website, funded
by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training has
been developed to provide activities that reinforce and build on the
concepts and skills your child will encounter in the classroom.
We encourage you to visit the website (link below) which supports the
Australian Curriculum for primary school and is child (and parent) friendly. You
may browse by your child's year level, or search a topic and the website will
suggest ideas, activities, games and videos you can use to support your
child's learning. Alternatively, download the free app

Shared Partnership in Embracing Reading
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the State Literacy Summit and
Leaders’ days. A key message was the importance of reading at home every
day.
The results are astounding; those children who read at home for 20 minutes a
day were far more likely to succeed at school. They scored in the top 10% of
readers (90th percentile), learning 180,000 words a year. By comparison, those
children who read 5 minutes/day dropped to the 50th percentile learning
approximately 28,200 words.
Reading at home is not teaching children to read but importantly gives
children valuable opportunity to practise the skills they are taught during the
day.
For our Reception children who are developing early reading skills, the
importance of reading to your child everyday supports the enjoyment of
reading and developing the habits of being a successful reader.

HOW DOES OUR SCHOOL CANTEEN WORK?
Our school canteen is open on Monday (lunch only), Wednesday and Fridays
(recess and lunch) and offers a variety of foods including vegetarian, vegan,
gluten free and halal options).
HOW DO I PLACE A LUNCH ORDER FOR MY CHILD?
Written order via classroom
We recommend your child’s order is either written on a brown paper bag
(available at your local supermarket in the glad wrap/alfoil isle) or on note paper
inside a snap lock bag enclosing the correct change. Please write your child’s
name and room number on their order.
Students should take their lunch order to class and place in the class lunch order
basket. Each class has a lunch monitor who will collect and take the orders to
the canteen and collect orders at lunch time.
Online Orders
Online orders can be placed via the school website https://www.modburyp7.sa.edu.au/parent-info/
canteen/ To use online ordering a bank transfer can be made in advance to have your canteen
account in credit, or a cash payment at the office can also be made.
Please note - Canteen payments can not be made via EFTPOS in the front office.
Special Orders
Our canteen holds special orders several times each term. These are special promotions offering
different foods that our students identified during a recent student survey.
This term we have been working
with Ms Delsar to develop our use of verbs in our oral language and
our writing.
There are three types of verbs that we have been exploring. They are:
action verbs (jump, hop, run)
saying verbs (shout, whisper, talk)
sensing verbs (feeling, remember,
contemplate)
We are learning to use a wider range of verbs accurately when speaking and writing and to put these verbs in past and present
tense.
The learning has allowed us to learn new concepts
such as music and Neuroscience.
We have been applying
our learning to other areas such as writing,
morning talks and bookmaking.

WAKWAKURNA
Modbury School has a strong commitment to developing
authentic Student Voice. Class representatives, two from
each class make up what is known as ‘Wakwakurnas’ (which
means ‘kids’ in Kaurna).
Wakwakurnas create opportunities for students to come
together and make decisions. They communicate the
thoughts and opinions of their peers which improves our
school community.
Wakwakurna Executive
Four senior students are ‘Executive members’ who lead four
working parties in the areas of Education, Marketing,
Environmental and Sports. Executive members in 2019 are
Nikki S, Aiden W, Veronica V, Damien W. Congratulations to
all our students who are part of Wakwakurna this year.
Classroom
Student Voice is an important aspect to the daily running of
classrooms where they:
Design and discuss what they learn, how they learn and
their learning environment
Give and receive feedback from peers and teachers to
challenge their thinking and learning
Run class meetings and identify areas that can be
discussed at a whole school level at Wakwakurna
meetings.
