Langton Green Community Farm March 2017
RECENT NOTEWORTHY ITEMS ~~~
Klaus Leven, Manager of Langton Green Community Farm, has completed studies for
a certificate in Sustainable Food and Farming at the University of Massachusetts.
Klaus already has a degree in horticulture. We’re fortunate to have a Farm Manager
who can apply the latest methods and his full range of experience and knowledge to
our farming ventures.
Congratulations to Program Director Karen Chase! Karen
and her husband will be welcoming a baby girl the end of
May! She kept us all in suspense this week as she revealed
the baby’s gender with “is it a boy or girl” cupcakes.
The Day Hab Program sold Whoopie Pies in the office in early
March for $1.50 each. They learned to make the pies them-
selves for some great kitchen experience.
Russell of Yellowtwig has taken his first LYFT (same as UBER, similar to a taxi) ride home
from work. Superstar House Manager Marquis Paige helped him set this up on his
phone, and got him a coupon code to make this first attempt free. When Russell got
off of work, he was able to start the process on his phone to call for a ride and then
got home safely. The whole process went smoothly and was a significant step in self-
reliance. As our efforts move toward assisting more Supported Employment individu-
als with alternative modes of transportation to and from work, this win for us as an
agency is an even bigger win for Russell’s independence.
See photos later in the newsletter of these individuals:
• Barb is happily learning the ins and outs of her new iPad. Langton Green has
helped many of our clients get set up with assistive technology.
• Juantwanette went on a tubing trip to Ski Liberty with her friend Emily! Thanks to
Direct Care Professionals Tiara and Crystal for making sure the ladies had a great
time.
• Congratulations to Matt on earning his Silver Medal at the Special Olympics Duck-
pin tournament!
• Emily recently rescued her new hamster friend, Hazel!

TOWANDA SHELL
Towanda has worked for Langton Green for a combined total of
eleven and a half years. Her favorite part about working with our
individuals is simply…our individuals! She loves taking the clients
on outings, and In her own free time, Towanda loves to travel.
Three traits that define Towanda, in her own words, are “loyal,
honest, and hardworking”. In describing her mentoring style,
Towanda says she mentors as if she was in her “mentee’s” place.
In other words, she mentors like she would want to be mentored
herself.
Advice Towanda would offer to those who are considering work-
ing for Langton Green: Look at the job as if the individuals were
your own family members, rela-
tives, or friends. If something
happened to them, how would
you like them to be cared for?
Treat our individuals with love
and respect and your job will
be very rewarding, and you will
make a true difference in their
lives.
Thank you for your exemplary
demeanor and mentorship,
Towanda! We appreciate you! Towanda with Richard, who has been
in her care for many years.

DONATE AND SUPPORT LANGTON GREEN, INC.
Langton Green is a 501(c)3 organization that provides residential and vocational op-
portunities to adults with developmental disabilities. For services provided to each per-
son in our program, we receive a per diem from the Developmental Disability Admin-
istration (DDA). This funding covers our basic operational expenses but does not allow
for supplemental program development that can only be afforded through our fund-
raising efforts. We need community support to truly enable us to grow and meet the
increasing demand for our services.
WHY SUPPORT LGI?
We have asked these two questions of our donors: “Why Langton?” and “What does it
mean to you to support an agency like ours?”
The overwhelming response to both questions is that Langton Green - whether through
residential supports or Langton Green Community Farm - helps people live full lives with
purpose and promotes a quality of life that would not be achieved without the sup-
port and services we provide.
HOW TO SUPPORT LGI?
Make a monetary gift. DDA funding allows us to
provide the basics, but it is through your generous financial support to our Annual Fund that we are
able to develop and advance our program.
Join us for our annual Farm Festivals each sum-
mer and fall.
Come out and be a volunteer.
Enjoy a personally rewarding experience serving
on a committee or on the Board of Directors to help
foster new relationships and bring necessary re-
sources to strengthen our future. Take advantage of various online fund-raising
opportunities such as iGive and Amazon Smile (as
Matt at right is encouraging!).
We’ll update you with new opportunities.
WHERE DO I START?
For more information about supporting LGI, contact Development Manager Cristina De
Avila at 410-269-1019 ext. 20, or email her at [email protected]. Donation
information is also on the web site at http://langtongreen.org/donate/.
