What’s New this Fall?

Cover Photo: Chef Tom Lin serves up four great cooking classes this fall, see page 4.

Introducing…Obstacle Dash!

Last spring, Rec&Ed’s pilot Obstacle Dash after school activity taught hundreds of kids to hop, run, and crawl through a variety of indoor and outdoor obstacle courses. Students from four pilot schools worked in small groups to overcome obstacles and build teamwork and leadership skills. This program was offered as part of the Michigan Dept. of Community Health-funded “Fuel Up for Fun” grant program and created in partnership with One on One Sports.

For fall 2013, we have expanded the Obstacle Dash program to many more elementary and some middle schools. It’s perfect for all children – whether they prefer individual or team sports – because it builds confidence for conquering life’s obstacles. See Obstacle Dash after school classes for boys and girls in grades 2-5 (p. 56-57) and grades 6-8 (p. 57).

Participants from all fall 2013 programs will come together for a final BIG obstacle course event. This event will be held on Nov. 16 for elementary school and Nov. 23 for middle school participants. Parents are invited to cheer for their athletes and may also try the obstacle course themselves if they’d like!

Preschool and Youth after School Classes Drawing for the Preschooler (p. 40) and The Power of Drawingfor elementary school students (p. 44) is a new program offered in response to requests from parents through our after school survey last spring. Rec&Ed is partnering with Young Rembrants® to provide these classes. Children who learn to draw using the Young Rembrandts® method develop spatial reasoning and fine motor skills, order and sequencing abilities, visualization, and self-discipline as well as fundamental art skills. To find out more about this program, enroll in the free Power of Drawing workshop scheduled for September 11 (p. 44).

In addition to LeGO robotics, we are also offering Bricks 4 Kids classes (p. 50) and partnering with Mad Science staff to offer Crazy Chemworks. (p. 51).

New Classes for adultsAdult participants will enjoy Super foods = Super You, a series of healthy cooking classes offered by Tanya Andrews (p. 6). Instructor Patrica Na is offering Working with Windows 8 (p. 13), Master Your iPhone 2 and Take Great Photos with Your iPhone (p. 14) and Ukulele for Beginners (p. 35) is offered in cooperation with the Ann Arbor Music Center.

For our participants with special needs, in response to our parent/caregiver focus group, we are offering these new classes for grades 9 through Adult: fun Night Out, Halloween Dance and Snowflake Dance (p. 37).

Swim Program ClosedWe are very sorry to announce the closure of our adult and youth instructional swim classes. The school board’s decision to eliminate funding for middle school pools effectively ended Rec&Ed’s long-running instructional swim program. However, as part of our Fitness program we are offering four aquatics classes: • Parent/TotSwim,20 • TherapeuticDeepWaterExercise,19 • OpenTherapeuticSwim,19 • DeepWaterAerobics,19

We understand that the loss of our swim program is not only a loss to Rec&Ed, but to the school district and community as well. We hope that families will take advantage of other local organizations that provide swimming lessons. The City of Ann Arbor offers swimming lessons at about the same price and uses a very similar curriculum to Rec&Ed’s. Other local swim programs include Goldfish Swim, the Y, Washtenaw County's Meri Lou Murray Recreation Center, and numerous neighborhood-based pools and clubs.

The Recreational Advisory Commission (RAC) is a citizen’s advisory group that helps Rec&Ed deliver the best programs possible for our residents.

Chakra Energy Workshop Chakras are the major vortices of energy that act as the junction points between mind and matter. Each chakra governs a particular area of your body, including the bones, organs and body tissue.  A chakra acts like a funnel that directs energy into major intake points of the body. When your chakras are blocked energy intake is dimin-ished and you lose the ability to function at an optimal level. Chakras are your  springboard to physical, emotional, mental and  spiritu-al health and wellbeing.  Get ready to go on a journey of self-discov-ery to a more balanced, peaceful and joyful you. The first class will include a Chakra Diagnostic Test so the class can be personalized to you. Required textbook: ABC of Chakra Therapy by Deedre Diemer is included in the class fee. Instructor: Carl Gunderson, CPT/CYI, Simply Holistic Fitness, LLC. 8 weeks.

WeDo roboticsYoung students develop their higher level thinking skills playing with an easy-to-use LEGO set featuring working motors and sensors. Stu-dents explore a series of cross-curricular, theme-based activities that helps them acquire skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as well as language and literacy.

robotics and Game Animation with Scratch Give your child a boost in learning key 21st century learning skills: creative thinking, teamwork, communication, and analysis. Using Scratch, a computer learning tool and WeDo LEGO Robotics, a vi-sual programming language, your child creates games, animations, stories, and art. Students draw pictures, add sound and movement, and share their projects with the class.  These activities help students understand mathematical and computational concepts and the pro-cess of design.

robotics with LeGO MindstormsUsing the LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot kits, students will become fa-miliar with the fundamentals of computer programming. Then with drag and drop computer language, students program their robots to follow multi-step programs. Integrating “vision”, touch and sound sensors along with individualized challenges teaches students to think outside the box, challenges their minds and prepares them for the world of technology.

Guided Building: Thinking Outside the BrickStudents get a new building challenge each week. In each challenge there are specific parameters such as height, weight, design and/or task. These challenges stretch and push young minds towards de-veloping their higher level thinking skills. Welcome to the world of thinking outside the brick with LEGO!

LeGO Creations with Digital Designer Everyone has used LEGO bricks to create and invent everything from cars to castles. But what if you could actually see your designs before you built them? With the special design software, students become their own LEGO building architect!

Bricks 4 Kidz fee: $119Grades 1-5. Children are natural scientists, engineers, and problem-solvers. They consider the world around them and try to make sense of it the best way they know how: touching, building, dismantling, creating, discovering, and exploring. Bricks 4 Kidz offers project-based programs using LEGO Bricks that will motivate and reinforce S.T.E.M. based princi-ples. All the models that Bricks 4 Kidz uses are unique and can’t be found in the store. What’s even more exciting is that every model is motorized and moves, with themes that include animals, inventions, life science, air travel and space exploration. Instructor: Bricks 4 Kidz staff. 6 weeks.TIMe: 3:50 PM - 4:50 PM.

Obstacle Dash - Middle School      (Boys edition & Girls edition)             Grades 6-8. Boys or Girls. This exciting, new approach to physical fitness will keep your child active and healthy! The Obstacle Dash Middle School Edition is a fun, challenging, and exhilarating program that will teach them about camaraderie, leadership, and self-confidence while leaving them with a feeling of accomplishment, and the understanding that he or she can conquer any obstacle life puts in front of them.

Once a week for 7 weeks, your child will have a nutrition lesson, enjoy a healthy snack, and then be led through different exercises that work on producing and resisting force, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and strength in an obstacle course format. Our coaches are trained in modi-fying every obstacle to fit each child’s age level while also having the knowledge to safely guide them through each obstacle. Each week there will be a theme that is stressed to help build character and focus on the core principles of the Obstacle Dash program (self-confidence, leader-ship, courage, sportsmanship, teamwork, dedication, and character). At the end of 7 weeks, all obstacles will be combined in our grand finale, The Obstacle Dash event on Saturday November 23rd. Parents are invited to attend to cheer their athlete on and, optionally, try the obstacle course themselves. Coaches: The Obstacle Dash Staff. fee: $149 includes snacks, t-shirt, final event. 7 weeks.
