Matthew 6:9-139 “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, 

on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, 

as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.’for yours is the kingdom and the power 

and the glory forever. Amen

1. Not Into Temptation:

1.1 Temptation and Testing

† ‘Tempt’ comes from the Greek (‘peirazein’) which could also mean ‘testing’.

† Purpose of ‘tempt’ is to ‘sin’ and the purpose of ‘test’ is ‘righteousness’ (Read James 1:3, 12).

1.2 God Tests, Not Tempt

James 1:1313 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; † God does not tempt but allows us to be “tested” so we will know ourselves.

1.3 The Devil Tempts

Matthew 4:33 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” † The devil “tempts” us to try to get us to sin against God and His word.

1.4 Enticed by Our Sinful Nature

James 1:1414 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed

1.5 Prayer for Help

Matthew 26:4141 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
