In the movie, “An Officer and a Gentleman”, a selfish, totally self- centered young man wants to be a naval flight officer. The tough drill sergeant sees through him and makes it a point to challenge him with every test and ordeal in the book. In the process this young man discovers his soul, and undergoes a change of heart; transitioning to become not only an Officer, but also a Gentleman. It is this change of heart that God looks for in our lives during Lent. He calls through the prophet Joel right from Ash Wednesday itself: ‘Let your hearts be broken, not your garments torn’; Let us make every effort to avoid the usual mistakes that we make. The first is this: do I attend Church, receive Holy Communion and visit the Blessed Sacrament every day? Be very regular in my contribution to the Church, etc. but I cannot forgive my brother or sister or mother or father or friend or neighbor? Do I run to help anyone in need, but am unwilling to do it for my very own who needs me at home? As the priest unzipped his coat, the thief saw the priest’s collar and apologized, “Sorry Padre, I didn’t know you were a priest.” The priest greatly relieved, offered the man a cigarette, but was surprised when the man said, “I don’t smoke during Lent.” Let us then have our hearts broken, listen to what the Spirit tells us and be ready to do whatever God is asking us to do; because as the prophet Joel continues: ‘The Lord is kind and full of mercy, He is patient and keeps his promise and is always ready to forgive.’ Then as we walk through this Door of Mercy, we shall experience a new spring, our hearts will be filled with joy and peace, overflowing with love and compassion. The Record InterviewContinuing our series of showcasing the youth in our parish who have taken the entrepreneurial route,

Margaret da Costa met up with Elvis D’Silva and Manuel Barretto. These young men are part of a web and app developing start-up, interestingly called Lightbulb.

While web designing and app development is a popular field it takes a lot of confidence and guts to go it on your own. How did it all begin?

Manuel – I majored in Computer Science and worked with Sound and About, which as the name suggests, was a firm dealing with sound and created my first website and app for them. This was a success and while at an expo, the app attracted attention and an order from a Chinese firm to do something similar yet bigger. There was no looking back.

Elvis – I did a course in animation through Frameboxx and worked for a year with a start up. Soon there were inquiries and I started freelancing. Slowly business picked up and I realized that I wanted to do something on my own and this seemed like a great opportunity.

How did you meet up? And how is it working as a team?We have been friends from our Holy Name youth days and we gradually started working together, Manuel is technically very sound and Elvis likes designing, so together we make a good team. There are no compartments. Both of us brainstorm together and come up with ideas. There is a combination of practical versus design and so far it has worked well. There are no egos involved and differences are sorted out peacefully.

What are the challenges? It takes some time to develop a website or app. Unfortunately, most people, generally the older generation do not realize the work involved and expect us to work for very little money. Developing a full-fledged website takes a lot of time and sometimes can run into months. Also, the general perception is that one needs to have a website just to advertise the address and what the company does. There is very little knowledge about what can be achieved. Fortunately the younger generation or rather our peers know what is involved and so it balances out.

RECORD INTERVIEW

If you are a young entrepreneur in our parish and would like to be featured in this column, please contact us at [email protected]

What advantages does one get in business by approaching you? There is so much more that can be done, e.g. one can catalogue products in its simplest form, have a service-based brochure advertising what the firm can do for you. And these days e-stores are very popular where one can catalogue and sell stuff. A great boon when one is starting out and do not want to invest money in space and staff. A good app can do all of this.

With an online presence, you can reach out to a wide audience – both within the country and internationally. The potential clients can check the products online thus eliminating the need to go to a physical store or an office. With the right app the website can look pretty and at the same time user friendly and informative.

Currently we are working on an app that becomes a connecting point for firms needing interns and vice versa – a great boon for freshers who struggle to get their first break.

What are your plans for the future? Any plans for expansion? This March we will complete two years of our existence as a company. We do need extra help to do some of the basic technical stuff but right now instead of hiring we are using the help of freelancers. This will not tie us down or burden us if work does not keep coming in. We have set ourselves goals for each year. We have not been able to attain all but are definitely on the right path.

What is the adage you live by?Something that Steve Jobs – a person we admire because not only did he create Apple but he made it easy for even non technical people to access technology and all the services involved, once said –

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”

“God willing, I will celebrate the Golden Jubilee of my priesthood in December”, he told us when we interviewed him for the HNR in July 2015. And God not only willed it but would have been smiling as our dear Fr. Joachim da Costa celebrated his Sacerdotal Golden Jubilee on 21st December, 2015, at the Holy Name Cathedral.

The Eucharist was celebrated with His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias being the main celebrant and concelebrated by Fr. Joachim and several associate priests. In attendance were many priests, nuns, his former and current parishioners, in short all who were a part of his long journey in the Lord’s vineyard.

A visibly touched and emotional Fr. Joachim thanked all who came and very generously invited the entire

congregation to the celebration that followed. As we trooped into the school grounds, we heard the lovely sounds of music from Ambassadors for Christ, the one and only priests’ band, which set the mood for the evening of entertainment and festivity.

When dinner was announced, looking at the huge gathering, I wondered if there would be enough

food for all but the scrumptious meal was like the miracle of the fish and the loaves, satisfying and more than enough for all!

If you thought that after celebrating fifty long years as a priest, Fr Joachim was ready to hang

up his boots or rather his priestly garments, think again - as His Eminence remarked in his homily “it’s

not retirement time for you as yet, you have many more years of active service to the Lord”. Encouraging words indeed to Fr. Joachim as he continues to celebrate the Lord with his hands, his heart and his voice!

Evening of Carols – 19th December, 2015

This year’s festivities were packed with great voices and great moments. The evening kicked off with the Parish’s little cherubs all decked out as sprigs of holly and with little flashlights to hold your attention taking to the stage. The nativity scene unfolded to the background score of their adorable ‘Lavender’s Blue’. The rest of the evening passed in a blur of community choirs each putting their own spin on the old familiar carols to give us quite a few noteworthy moments. The Little Flower Community’s clear sweet voices transcended their numbers. A row

of dancing children in the Immaculate Conception Community’s choir stole the show. The John Bosco Community’s choice to do away with mikes gave their voices a wonderfully untouched quality, their sound unaffected by distortion. The St. Thomas Community’s rendition of ‘Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer’ in Hindi was a strong step towards including all the parish members in the Christmas celebrations. To wrap it all up was an expectedly stellar performance by the Cathedral Choir and a hearty set by the girls of the youth.

sisters – we celebrate this very specially at Christmas. He prayed that the parents of the children would be able to find work and that the children themselves would get the opportunities to move forward in life. He hoped that the New Year which had just begun would hold out ‘saphalta’, ‘sukh’ and ‘vishwas’ for everyone. The response was a fervent ‘Amen’.

A game was enthusiastically played in which His Eminence participated! Four flags – red, blue, green, yellow – were positioned at four locations and the

children had to ‘park’ at a colour of their choice when the music stopped. His Eminence then called out a colour and the children had to sit out the following round. Once the game was over, the children returned to their free spirited revelry and brought their own brand of joy to the occasion. That they were more than capable to lead the entertainment was evidenced by the talent on show when some of them took the mic to belt out their favourite Bollywood numbers, supported by whole-hearted

audience participation.

Soon, it was time for the Grace before the repast and the delicious aroma of biryani filled the hall as the plated meal and a fruit were served out.

Post lunch, His Eminence handed out gift hampers to each family. Blankets, sweets and goodies were given as parting presents to the guests as they made their way to their homes under the skies.

Here was the Gospel parable from Mathew come alive – ‘So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find. So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find’ – because this is exactly what the SVP volunteers of the Parish of the Holy Name did, going to every street and inviting the pavement dwellers to come!

And for the pavement dwellers themselves, we hope that this occasion marks the beginning of better things in their meager existence.

A big thank you also goes out to all the helpers - parishioners of Holy Name - who spent the best part of their Sunday energetically occupied in making sure the event was a success!!!

That familiar childhood injunction, ‘Wash your hands!’ came vividly to mind as one followed the line of parents and children forming at the door to the hall of the Holy Name High School. Volunteers with liquid soap and hose pipe helped the invitees wash their hands, while another volunteer gave them a hand-towel to complete the operation. Entry was guaranteed anyway, but everyone gleefully obliged. And they came in numbers, from the wrinkled elderly to the very smallest infant cradled in the arms of mothers who were little more than children themselves.

Once inside, families and friends migrated towards each other and seated themselves in expectancy of what was to come. The event had been arranged and organised by the St. Vincent de Paul Society and on the agenda were games, snacks, lunch, spot prizes. The children, once they had tucked into Punjabi samosas and chai, took over, and the decibels rose higher and higher – the sound of the younger generation dancing and shouting in gay abandon to the Bollywood beat. Jumping, laughing, spinning, every child present was on the floor and every plea for attention from the MC, Fr. Jervis, went unheeded, so he gallantly surrendered to popular demand!! The parents, in the meantime, sat and watched and chatted, for once able to relax in the relatively sheltered environment – a brief respite from daily life.

When the Cardinal entered, some of the women and children spontaneously ran towards him seeking his blessing. No formality here! His Eminence moved among the people, greeting and blessing them. He then led a general prayer, in Hindi, reminding everyone present that Christ came into our world to bring peace, love and hope and that, as one family, we are all brothers and

contributions which would be used to buy gifts for the housebound. This initiative by the Parish attracted the whole-hearted support and the generosity of its parishioners, if the tidy sum of Rs.43,000+ garnered in contributions, was an indicator. Hampers of healthy food items were bought from the proceeds and personally presented to the 50+ housebound parishioners. Surprised by the unexpectedness of the gifts, and touched by the thoughtfulness of the gesture, the housebound members expressed their sincere appreciation. Delighted also at knowing that ‘out of sight’ was not synonymous with ‘out of mind’, they promised to include their well-wishers in their daily prayers.A small but well-meaning gesture of living out the command of our Lord, of loving our neighbour, succeeded in spreading a little Christmas cheer.Surely, the true spirit of Christmas is a spirit of giving, and yes indeed, the spirit of Christmas is alive and kicking in our Parish!

‘Christmas Tree’ for the Housebound

Fighting the cold and finding themselves in the unfamiliar area of Colaba, they made their way to Archbishop’s House to meet with Cardinal Oswald Gracias. These are the families from the Chotta Nagpur area, who have migrated to the city in the hope that Mumbai would be their ‘land of opportunities’. They work in menial jobs and struggle to make ends meet and every little that they can spare, they send home to their village so that their families at home, too, could have a better life. The meeting was arranged by Fr. Paul Vaz and his team from Seva Niketan, who try to bring some Christmas cheer to this community. It started with a few Christmas

Growing old is hard, being housebound is harder. Theirs is an increasingly shrinking world, their lives confined to their homes, wheelchairs or beds, often lonely, with the passing on of spouses, family and peers, unseen by the world, hence at times, forgotten. With the steadily growing numbers of such housebound people within our Parish, a need was felt, to reach out to these members to make them feel a part of the community. And there’s no better time than Christmas, the season of joy and giving, to do just that. Just as the wise men gave the baby Jesus meaningful gifts at his birth, likewise, it was felt, why not reinforce their sense of belonging to the Parish community, through appropriate gifts to them.

With that as the objective, Advent saw a Christmas tree in our Church trimmed with colourful envelopes, for

Carols sung in Hindi by those who came in first, and was followed up with games for the children. The Cardinal then addressed the community, and expressed

his joy in hosting them here at the Archbishop’s House. He told them that he hoped in the coming year he could organise the celebration of the Eucharist for all people of the Chotta Nagpur belt and that Cardinal Toppo had expressed his desire to be a part of this celebration. The Cardinal also explained that though most of these families were migrants and could feel lonely and lost in this festive season, he wanted them to

know that they could always count on the Archdiocese of Bombay and himself to be there for them. The Christmas story is, itself, a story of a migrant family in search of shelter. The morning ended with each family receiving a goodie bag of household essential and a few treats for Christmas. Indeed, this Christmas morning witnessed to the joy of giving and those who were there to help, felt blessed to be a part of this celebration of love.

Some of our community members visited Our Lady of Piety at Chira Bazaar. It was a joy to meet the lovely ladies of this Home, all of different ages. We talked to them enquiring after their health and lives, and after conversing with them for a while we sang some Konkani and English songs and carols, and they too joined in the singing and merriment.

We learnt, through our conversation, that each one of them in whatever way - big or small - help one another and are living like one big happy family. As we were leaving, they wished us a very happy Christmas, and extended an invitation to come over again for Christmas to taste the goodies prepared by them. We left with a happy and wonderful feeling of shared love and learned that you don’t need too much to be happy.

sessions have been exceptional. His latest talk was what Pope Francis had conveyed: Developing the church from the Centre to a church at the periphery. What we need to make people realize is that the real church is not a “cement-concrete building with the cross on the top of it” but the real church is where the communities live out their lives and tackle problems of fellowship, justice, equality and love.

The real church exists in the families, the neighborhoods, the communities and workplaces where people spend most of their time. This is how the early Christian community lived. Their leaders and elders assembled the people together to pray, worship, discuss, plan and solve their common life problems. This was the church at the periphery rather than the church at the centre. This is the paradigm change required of people. As we were 12 of us – we paired up to share this very thought-provoking subject so as to reach out to the community to rope in more participation and also ensure a lively and vibrant community.

After Bishop’s discourse, the evening ended with fellowship, carol singing and a sumptuous dinner.

Youth PagesOur parishioners will be happy to know that our Youth won the First Prize in the Deanery Crib Competition. Congratulations – we are so proud of our Youth!

Youth members Vanessa Quadros, Nikita D’Silva & Jaison D’Sa share their experiences on the making of the Christmas Crib 2015.

We wanted the crib to be a little different from the mundane and also introduce the upcoming Year of Mercy through it. Kicking off with brainstorming sessions, we essentially pondered on the meaning of mercy and how we could incorporate it into the crib - thus we came up with the idea of a ‘Walk in from Darkness to Light’.

The walk from darkness to light highlights the various temptations that draw us to sin and having sinned, we bear the burden of the guilt that comes along with it. But though we feel so condemned by the world and also in our own eyes, God does not condemn us. This light shines through his mercy.

With this thought set into place, we designed the structure consisting of 3 panels ‘sin’, ‘guilt’, and ‘light’ and divided ourselves to take charge of each panel. Meetings were held on a weekly basis to make sure that the work being done was in sync.

We came across a lot of ups and downs, clash of ideas, miscommunication, etc. But as the days progressed, communication increased and there was a blend of ideologies that eventually resulted in something beautiful.

Weeks of planning and preparation, days of execution, moments of ups and downs paid off with the overwhelming

The short programme started with a game for children after snacks had been served. For the first time the entire hall was utilized for the “Lemon and Spoon” race. It was hilarious, enjoyed by one and all. “Passing the Ball” another game for adults kept everyone in high spirits. This event would not have been possible without the cooperation and support of our animators and the financial support from our donors – the Nathan family and Vernon Carasco. The gifts for the spot prizes

were sponsored by Barbara Craven. Another first was that Bernadette Lewis received the “Best Resourceful Person” award from our Rector Fr. Michael Goveas for her active participation in the community. The evening wound up with an exciting game of Housie conducted by Alwyn Coelho with his witty calls. A big thank you to Fr. John Lopez for the use of the hall and sound system.

response from the parishioners as well as winning the Youth Crib Competition.

The Cathedral Crib received some rave appreciation for our youth – we bring you some of the reactions from our parishioners….

To the Youth of the Parish who have created that fantastic Crib in the courtyard:

How inspiring! What relevance to the Year of Mercy proclaimed by our Pope Francis. You have touched the very depths of humanity in each of us, striking

the darkness deep within, symbolized by the dark alley. On all sides are envisioned on dismal, dark, sombre placards and posters, the attraction of sin, our ego-centredness and hard-heartedness, our pride and hypocrisy, our irresponsibility as children of a loving, merciful Father and sisters and brothers in the family of God, our failure to

see the light, … only sickness and death!

Then… our world is shot through with the realization of our guilt and brokenness, our powerlessness… the “noose” … But there’s no turning back … we must follow the LIGHT… forgiven, restored, saved, because of His MERCY which triumphs over guilt and sin. Truly we have need of a Saviour … JESUS. The brightness and brilliance are indicative of this forgiveness, mercy, steadfast love, love undeserved, enveloping the Crib and all who are drawn within its ambience.

Creativity to the hilt! Such a “stunner” can only be executed by those who have experienced the reality themselves! Congratulations! You are truly blessed!!

With the crib theme this year representing “from darkness to light”, the Youth have set the ball rolling on various occurrences of day to day life.

Three of the posters touched and moved me:

“I wish you were never born”, reflecting on the girl child. Life is not about the destination but about the journey.

“No one will accept me, there is no turning back”.

Through all of the pain that this life brings, there are still things that make life worth living.

“She will give birth to a Son and you will call Him JESUS because He will save His world from their sins”. Are we one of His people? Think of God’s Mercy as an investment in our future growth.

POPE FRANCIS

“Do not forget this: the Lord is never too tired to forgive. But sometimes we are too tired to apologize.”

For Catholics, the Jubilee is a great time for reconciliation with God. For this special Jubilee, the central theme is Mercy, so the Sacrament of Confession is very important.
