All the officials present at the ceremony which was about to begin could be recognized in accordance with the Song imperial protocols. e scene is mainly composed of the Khitan tributes lying in the center, the Song officials being neatly ranked closely around the tributes while the Khitan envoys standing away in the background. e composition reflected the Song-Khitan relations and expressed the idea that the Song dynasty still took up the central position of the political pattern at that time. The Northern Song Court Painting ‘The Khitan Envoys’ Paying Tributes to The Song Court’ (Qìdānsh Cháopìn Tú) from ‘The Four Pictures of Jingde’s Regime’

Abstract: The Northern Song court painting of ‘The Khitan Envoys’ Paying Tributes to The Song Court’ (QìdānshǐCháopìn Tú), one of ‘The Four Pictures of Jingde’s (景德 ) Regime’ (Jǐngdé Sì tú) included in ‘Illustrated Paragons and Virtues of The Song Taizu (太祖 ) , Taizong (太宗 ) and Zhenzong (真宗 ) Reigns’ (Sāncháo Xùnjiàn Tú), showed the ritual scene of the Khitan envoys’ presence at the Song Court after The Song-Liao Chanyuan Peace Treaty had already been signed in the reign of Emperor Jingde ( 景德 ). find out why the works by the four masters of the Southern Song dynasty were much more adored and appraised and how much they were imperially appreciated at that time. Many evidences supported the fact that Emperor Qianlong (乾隆 ) enjoyed and held in esteem the paintings the same way as many literati did during the Ming and Qing periods. When it comes to aesthetic standards, the idea that enjoyment and appreciation of a painting absolutely oppose each other is biased in the author’s opinion. The Mutual Impacts of Sino-Islamic Jade Carving Art during The 13th to 17th Centuries

Xu Xiaodong Abstract: Islamic jade carving has a long history. Ever since the 13th, especially the 15th centuries the development of Islamic jade carving art owned much to the Mongol’s western expedition who enjoyed and introduced jade-carving tradition of the Han people area. The Song and Yuan art style can be seen on the early Islamic jade wares that were made during the 13th – 15th centuries. The Ming jade objects share some techniques, design, style and decorative patterns with Islamic wares by the 16th

– 17th centuries. The prosperous Mughal jade products during the 16th to 17th centuries consumed an enormous amount of high-grade raw materials imported from Xinjiang area of China, which resulted with the poor quality of jade objects of the Ming dynasty. Besides, the route across Tibet played as an important role as both prairie and maritime silk roads to bridge Middle and South Asian with the Ming dynasty in history.

More Interpretation of ‘ 即 ’ and ‘ 既 ’ in Oracle Bone Inscriptions Zhang Xinjun Abstract: Both ‘即 ’ and ‘既 ’ are frequently read in the inscribed oracle bones unearthed in the Yin Ruins. It has been generally considered that the character ‘即 ’ follows ‘皀 ’ and ‘卩 ’ to form a shape of a man who is seated in a kneeling posture dining, whereas ‘既 ’ takes after ‘皀 ’ and ‘旡 ’ to form the figure turning the mouth backward after dinner. They mean differently. However, the fact that oracle bone inscription is complicated and occasionally to the point of obscurity usually leads to several forms of one character, followed by confusing interpretation between ‘即 ’ and ‘既 ’. This essay makes a further analysis of the structure and form of ‘即 ’ and ‘既 ’ and other similar characters based on the oracle bone inscriptions and divinations to come up with different interpretation of the two characters.

On The Authenticity of A Collection of Yongle Qin Literature on Music(Yǒnglè Qínshū Jíchéng)

Yang Yuanzheng Abstract: The disputes remain in the academia on the authenticity of A Collection of Yongle Qin Literature on Music (Yǒnglè Qínshū Jíchéng) consisting of 20 volumes. Zhang Yunliang views it be compiled under the order of Ming Emperor Chengzu (成祖 ) (r. 1403-1424) but copied on the red checkered silk paper by the imperial scribes of the Ming court, whereas Zha Fuxi takes the different idea that it not be the manuscript but a copied-book by the late Ming antique book dealers off The Complete Volumes of Qin Literature on Music (Qínshū Dàquán) edited in the reign of Emperor Wanli (万历 ) of the Ming period. Based on the content and edition, this article stands by the conclusion that A Collection of Yongle Qin Literature on Music (Yǒnglè Qínshū Jíchéng) is the product by the imperial scribes of the Ming dynasty which covers the whole Song-Yuan theories on music included in The Yongle Canon (Yǒnglè Dàdiǎn). Emperor Qianlong (乾隆 ) (r. 1736-1795) used to read it right after it had been bought and collected in the imperial library of the Qing court in 1759. The Compilation of Qing Court History (Guó Cháo Gōng Sh ) and Court Studies of Qianlong Period

Chen Lianying Zhang Nan Abstract: It was not until Qing Emperor Qianlong’s (乾隆 ) regime that the government for the first time inhistory mobilized a lot of manpower and material resources for compilation of the history of that dynasty by starting from Qing Court History (Guó Cháo Gōng Shǐ) which reviews on file the imperial collection of heritages, cultural activities, architecture and gardens, personnel, organization and administration, decrees and regulations, expenditure of the inner Court and so on. It is of great significance for later generations to study the imperial court culture with such a large amount of historical documentary forming the base upon which more researches about Qing Court history, traditional art and classical literature would be carried out systematically. On Granting Fù upon The Bereaved Family of The Court Official in The Ming Dynasty

Song Jigang Zhao Kesheng Abstract: It was actually a political policy to grant a certain amount of money and items upon the bereaved family of the deceased official as extra subsidy for his funeral expense by the imperial Court, which was called Cì Fù in Chinese literature. The amount of subsidy depending on his deeds, status and relation with the imperial court symbolized the reputation of the deceased official. However, the Ming dynasty did not stick to the past to present it as a sure gift but as a special gift favored by emperor for his ever contribution. It cut down funds and items and the number of officials to be awarded. The implementation of the Ming reformed policy based on the principle of social status was to meet the historical context of that time, enhance the construction of funeral rituals, by which the imperial clansman, the relatives of imperial consorts, civil and military officials would be placed properly after they passed away. The Management System of Japanese Hizen and Chinese Jing Dezhen Porcelain Industries Xiong Huan Abstract: The development of Japanese Hizen porcelain industry owes much to the proper management system. This thesis analyzes the management systems of both local official and folk kilns, pointing out that Nabeshima kiln carried out the direct and closed management system in order to prevent the local techniques from flowing out to other places, so as to ultimately strengthen the local government politically and economically. By the way, the author compared Hizen and Jingdezhen porcelain industries in view of their good exchanges with each other for a deeper insight of Hizen’s administration.
