One of the mostimportant servicesI offer as theHorticulturist inthe Payne CountyExtension office isassisting clientsone on one withlandscape/garden-ing issues. Thisweek’s column is anexample of that. Ifyou would like tosee columns aboutspecific topics, con-tact me (informa-tion below) and ifpossible, I will behappy to discuss itin an upcoming col-umn.

As I always tellgroups when I’masked to speak, Iwould much rathertalk about whatyou want to hearabout than some-thing I like but youhave no interest in!

Now, on to cannacare. These longlived perennialswork very well inmany landscape sit-uations. From alandscape perspec-tive, their limitingfactor is probablythe tendency to geta little bit raggedlooking and beat upby the end of theseason by ourwinds. This issuecan be easily mini-mized by carefulsite selection orregular removal ofdamaged leaves.

Cannas are con-sidered winterhardy in USDAzones 7-10. PayneCounty is in zone 7.This means theyoverwinter prettywell for us withoutany special precau-

tions. However, once every decadeor so, we will have awinter hard enoughto kill some of thesetough plants. If youhave trouble withcannas survivingeither because of atender cultivar oran exposed site, trydigging and storingthem over the win-ter.

Cannas should bedug after the firstgood frost or freeze. In most years, thismeans November. This year has beenso mild that right

now is still earlyenough. Preparethe plants for stor-age by removingthe top growth anddigging all the rhi-zomes up. Separatethem into smallclumps (it’s ok tobreak a few) andsave only theplants that lookhealthy. In thiscase, healthy isdefined by firm andlight-colored.Washing the soil offwith a good blast ofwater helps makethis task easier.

After cleaning

and separating, setthe cannas aside ina shady area for afew days and letthem dry and hard-en off. Be sure to

protect them fromfreezing weather atthis stage! Oncethey’ve dried a bit, store them in a cool, dry, and dark place.

A cardboard boxfilled with eithersawdust or peatmoss works well, just avoid some-thing that seals

tightly like a plasticbox.

Even if you don’thave trouble with

During the holi-days, there is quiteunderstandably afocus on food andentertaining, butthe season is also atime when manyhomeowners inviteoutside guests intotheir home for thefirst time inmonths. Want tomake sure yourhome is holidayready? In additionto planning yourmenu and decor, Ialso suggest creat-ing a plan in orderto make your homefresh and festive!

GETTING STARTEDWe often hear

about spring clean-ing, but believe it ornot, the holidayseason is often atime when home-owners benefitmost from rollingup their sleevesand taking on a bigcleanup. In syncwith the end of anew year, transi-tioning out the oldand bringing in thenew is the perfectnew beginning inorder to help greetyour guests for hol-idays.

When it comes tocreating a holidayaction plan, hereare some tips thatshould make yourtop 10 to-do list.

1. Cut the clut-ter. This is the per-fect time of theyear to purge andget rid of theexcess to makeroom for your holi-

day tree and otherdecor. From furni-ture to extra cloth-ing, relieve yourhome of excess.

2. Deep clean. Before you entertainfamily and friends, this is an ideal timeof the year to payattention to thosesmall details.

3. Add fragrance. From diffusers toscented candles or aroaring fire, bring-ing in naturalscents can helpengage the senses.

4. Follow the one-in, one-out rule.Guilty of also shop-ping for yourselfwhile holiday shop-ping for others? It ishard to resist thetemptation! Thisholiday season ifyou buy somethingnew, be sure to also

get rid of somethingold.

5. Swap it out.Now is the time todust off your fancysilverware, specialtoss pillows, glass-ware, etc., and dis-play it when enter-taining your guests. The holiday seasonis also an ideal timeto change over yourdecor. Tired of thatslip cover, beddingor toss pillow? Giveyour home a quickuplift by swappingout an older itemfor a newer one.

6. Finish thatproject. Oftenaround the house, there are numeroushome improvementprojects in variousstages of comple-tion. Make that hol-iday party at yourhome the deadline

and incentive tofinally finish thoseprojects and haveyour home completein time for whenyour guests arrive.

7. Change thebulbs. Adding high-er wattage bulbsthroughout thehome can go a longway in makingyour home feelbright, cheery andfestive.

8. Go natural. From soy-basedcandles to naturalfragrances such aspine and even cof-fee, these types ofnatural scents willlinger in your homeand will likely havegreat appeal foryour guests.

9. Air it out. Itmay be a bit chillyoutside. But thewinter is an ideal

time to air out yourhome; the crisp, coolair will help to revi-talize your space.Consider airing outyour home perhapsfor a few hours eachday.

10. Clean outyour kitchen cabi-nets and refrigera-tor. For many thisis an annual ritual, clearing out andorganizing therefrigerator and

cupboards. Havinga tidy, well-orga-nized kitchen willmake your job thatmuch easier when itcomes time to pre-pare your holidaymeal.

ABOUT REAL ESTATEBy David W. Myers

Those bubble-filled sheets of plastic that arecommonly used to protect fragile items can pro-tect against high energy bills, too.

DEAR MR MYERS: Have you ever heardof using “bubble wrap” that’s used to wrapfragile items on windows instead, in orderto save on energy costs? If so, does it reallywork?

ANSWER: Yes, most energy-saving expertssay that bubble wrap -- those sheets of plasticpacking material covered with small air cush-ions to protect easily breakable goods -- can helpto slash a homeowner’s monthly heating bills.

The catch is that the windows have to beselected carefully, and the bubble wrap has to beapplied appropriately.

Bubble wraps are practical only in lesser-usedareas, such as windows in an attic, basement orgarage. After all, you wouldn’t want to look outof your kitchen or living-room window on asunny day and see nothing but a sheet of pim-pled plastic.

Clean the window first. Then mist it withwater and put the wrap on the pane, with thebubble side against the glass. The air bubbleshelp to block cold air from coming inside, cuttingthe heat loss from an uninsulated window in

half.Because there’s no glue involved, you can sim-

ply peel the plastic off when the weather warms.Poorly insulated windows are among the

biggest energy-wasting items in a home, expertssay, even though many homeowners don’t evenknow that they have such a problem.

To test your windows, place a lit incense sticknear the glass. If smoke from the stick moves, you have a leak. Seal it with an inexpensivetube of caulking.

Rarely-used fireplaces also are often-over-looked energy goblins, because a sizable portionof the warm air generated by a home’s furnacedisappears up the chimney. If you have a fire-place that you don’t use very often, you can buya small “chimney balloon” that keeps the fur-nace’s warm air from escaping.

The reusable balloons take just a few minutesto install. They’re available at many home-improvement stores and online: Most cost about$40, but your energy savings will quickly offsetthe price by slashing the heat loss more than bysimply closing the damper.

* * *REAL ESTATE TRIVIA: Homeowners in

Connecticut pay an average of $410 eachmonth for their utilities, the highest in thenation, a comprehensive survey by

WalletHub.com says. The lowest:Washington, D.C., where monthly utilitybills average $223.

* * *DEAR MR. MYERS: We filed for bank-

ruptcy in August. How long will it stay onour credit record?

ANSWER: It depends on the type of bankrupt-cy that you filed.

Most folks file under Chapter 7 of the U.S.Bankruptcy Code. It usually wipes out unse-cured debt, like a sweater or even a refrigeratorthat was put on a credit card. But it doesn’trelieve a homeowner’s monthly mortgage pay-ment, because the home loan is secured by theproperty itself.

The bank can foreclose on the property if themonthly payments don’t continue to be paid, andthen sell it to the highest bidder.

Assuming that you filed for Chapter 7 “protec-tion,” it will stay on your credit report for 10years.

Some cash-strapped individuals insteadchoose to file under Chapter 13 of theBankruptcy Code, which allows them to repaysome or all of the money that is owed to credi-tors over an extended period of time. A Chapter13 stays on a credit report for seven years.
