SOUTHAMPTON TWP. — Residents here enjoy a lack of taxes, along with an abundance of services provided by the township’s recreation department.

Tom Ginnick, a member of the township’s board of supervisors, said the township does not have a property or per capita tax. Instead, he said the town-ship relies on the earned income tax. Along with a lack of taxes, the township has a strong parks and rec-reation department.

“I think our park and rec commission, I can’t say

enough about it,” Ginnick said.

He said the soccer pro-gram is popular, and that 176 children have signed up for the township’s t-ball program. He also said that 62 reservations have b e e n m a d e fo r t h e t h e township’s multipurpose center, and pavilions have been booked “virtually ev-ery weekend.”

So u t h a m p to n Tow n -ship is west of South New-ton Township and east of the borough of Shippens-burg. Interstate 81 pass-es through the township, with Route 174 (Walnut Bottom Road) also passing through to the south.

Who lives there?Census data from 2010

shows 2,341 households are located in Southamp-ton Township with a total population of 6,359. The population is made up of 49.5 percent male (3,145) and 50.5 percent female (3,214.)

The population’s age range includes 22.5 per-cent that are ages 14 and under, 18.4 percent are 15 to 29, 20.4 percent are 30 to 44, 19.9 percent are 45 to 59, 13.7 percent are 60 to 74 and 4.6 percent are 75 and older.

In 2012, 32 houses were sold, with an av-erage sales price of $153,040. This is down slightly from $161,928 in 2011. The me-dian sales price was $165,025 for 2012, up slightly from $157,500 in 2011. The average days on market for the year were 170.

Shopping and commuting options

There are no park and ride locations in the township. For bus routes and schedules, vis-it www.cattransit.com. There are no commercial shopping opportunities in the town-ship. Ginnick said the town-ship has been successful with its zoning of agricultural, res-idential and woodland con-servation. Commercial, he said, is still a work in progress.

“We are zoned, but one of our difficulties, and we’re ad-dressing it, is our commer-cial,” Ginnick said.

He said the township’s commercially zoned areas are within close proximity of Exit 29 of Interstate 81. That same bridge is where Ginn-ick said traffic tends to be a problem. While the bridge is in good shape, he said traffic gets congested when a lot of tractor trailers travel through the area. He proposed that it be increase to a four or six-lane bridge, but said he didn’t know where the funding would come for such a proj-ect.
