If I had written this article two months ago you all would have thought I was stark raving mad! Who was even thinking about water and moisture in the middle of a hot summer draught, but as fall has �nally made its appearance, and it has brought along some rain and cooler temperatures, it’s time to be aware of the pitfalls that water intrusion brings with it. With just a little time invested in checking for moisture you can save yourself a lot of headache and money.

Here are just a few places you might take a look at to determine if you need to make some preparations for the cooler, wetter weather. Check for leaks around your windows and doors, especially near the corners. Check for peeling paint, it can be a sign of water getting into the wood. Inspect for discoloration’s in paint or caulking, swelling of the window or door-frame or surrounding materials. Make sure shingles are in good repair and doing their job. Leaks are particularly common around chimneys, plumbing vents and attic vents. Make a trip around your foundation and watch for cracks, particularly where wiring or plumbing go through. When it comes to the plumbing there are several items to check out. Look for leaking faucets, dripping or “sweating” pipes, clogged drains, and faulty water drainage systems Inspect washing machine hoses for bulges, cracks or wetness. Replace them every few years or sooner if problems are found. Inspect the water heater for signs of rust or water on the �oor.
