BigMoney. Big Love. Big House. Time to wipeaway the minutia of the past and see yourbright future in ALL CAPS.

And what if you don't want to drive aBig Car into the driveway of a Big House?Well, that's downright un-American.You've probably heard this statistic, butindulge me: Since 1950, the average sizeof new single-family houses in the UnitedStates has more than doubled, even as the

We humans love to wrapthings into balls: yarn, tape, rubber bands, tinfoil. And now we have a plastic tubefilled with hundreds of little lights to add to the list. If you've already mastered therubber-band ball, tryout the rope-light chandelier-provided you have thrift andabout an hour's worth of patience.

Posi-tion the waistband lak a the str apl insidethe bag so that the right side (I he frontl ofthe strap is facing the right side of whatused to be the front of the pant leg. 12. If you really want to get crazy. sew onpockets to stash sunglasses. loose change. and other odds and ends.

~BI3I1 DO1. Iron your fabric. 2. Measur@ desired widthand length. then add 4" to the length. 3. Cutfabric to size. Fold over and hem the sides,if necessary. 4. Fold over the top half of thefabric 2" and pin in place. 5. Stitch down theedge to create a sleeve for the dowel rod.Repeat on the bottom half of the fabric.6. Use the saw to cut the dowet rods to thewidth of the fabric. 7. Screw eyehooks intothe ends of the top dowet rod. Pre-drillingwill make this easier. 8. St ide dowel rods intothe sleeves. 9. Determine how high you wantto hang your room divider. and cut the fishingline to length. Secure one end of the line toeyehooks with a sturdy knot. 1D. Screwin the ceiling hooks. 11. Secure the otherends of the fishing line to the ceiling hooks.using the level to be sure your divider hangsstraight. 12. Catch up on some reading inyour newly partitioned nook.

Measure and cut the wood 10serve as vertical bracepieces, two per set of stacked windows. (We constructed our room divider in twopieces so it can be easily disassembled and moved aroundl c. Stack a pair of windows,and with the edges flush and straight. use the naiL gun and brads or wood screws tosecure them together with a vertical brace on both sides. Repeat for your other setlslof windows. For added reinforcement you can also secure the top and bottom edgesof the stacked windows together using a biscuit jointer, biscuits, and wood glue, whichyou shouLd then clamp and Let dry overnight. 5. Once the windows are secured, setthe sections side by side and measure the overall width of the divider. 6. Measure andcut wood for the bottom of the frame, We used one piece of wood as the actual base,then gave it sides by stacking. gluing. and screwing together strips of wood to form achannel deep and narrow enough for the windows to rest in without tiLting or rockingback and forth. [To add a Little flair. we used saLvaged moLding to top the sides of Ihebase.17. Screw casters into the base. 8. Set the windows in the base and attach drawcatches to connect each set of windows to its neighbor. 9. Our configuration allowedfor a tittle knick- knack shelf. which we attached with wood gLue and finishing brads.10. Pick a room thai needs some help. and work your magic.

Make a sketch of the parts so youcan maximize the sheet of wood that vouttbe cutting them from. 3. Using the table saw.cut the pieces. Labeling each piece will makeassembling the boxes much easier le.q., "Box1, top'I. 4. Dry-fit each box with the top andbottom abutting the sides. 5. Mark each piecefor biscuits every 3 ' to 4 " " . The tops and bot-toms shoutd be slotted on the end grain. whilethe sides should be slotted on the inside face.Cut slots using the biscuit jointer. 6. Assem-ble the boxes using wood gLue and biscuits.Clamp and let dry overnight. 7. Unclampboxes. On the tops and bottoms of each box,carefulLy measure and mark where you wantthe aluminum poles to pass through. Spacingbetween poles should be l8" or less to ensureadequate support when assembled. Double-check to make sure the spacing is the same

on every box, as each pole must go throughall the boxes. 8. Using a 1 5/16" forstner bitin the drill press, make holes in the topsand bottoms of the boxes for the aluminumpoles. 9. Sand boxes and appty polyurethanein a well-ventilated area. Let dry overnight.10, Move all pieces into the room where thedivider is to be installed, Set boxes on theiredges so that the holes align. Starting withthe bottom, place collars at the underside ofeach box as you slide the poles through theholes. Attach flanges to tops and bottoms ofeach pole. 11. Enlist a friend to help move thewhole assembly into the desired location inroom and lift it into place. Attach top flangesto ceiLing using 2" screws. If you don't hitframing with the screws, use anchors.12. Move the top box to the desired heightUse a leveL to make sure irs horizontal,then slide collars fLush against bottom ofthe box and tighten with set screw. Repeatfor remaining boxes. 13. Secure the bottomflanges to the floor using 2" screws. 14. Driveyourself nuts trying to decide which way yourtchotchkes should face.

Downing drinks while perched on the bed, the floor, and the arms of thecouch is totally awesome iii [If you're a college freshman.l Otherwise itsucks. Don't get us wrong; living small doesn't mean you can't party likea rock star, it just requires a little creativity. This project offers dualfunctionality: wall art on quiet evenings, and extra seating and sidetables on nights when friends roll in to bring down the house.

ClBmo DO1. Since these stools are serve as eye candy when not in use, we de-cided to get lancy and miter the edges to make a clean box. We cut nine20" x 20" panels for the tops and 36 20" x 4 'I, ' pieces for the side pan-els, with mitered edges on all four sides of the top panels and on threesides [two short, one longl of the side panels. 2. Start assembling theboxes by laying one top and four sides on your work surface, miterededges. down. Carefully line up the side pieces around the top panel,and with the edges flush, secure them with strips of packing tape. 3.Keeping ailihe pieces together, flip the taped unit onto irs back side.4. Run a bead of wood glue along the mitered edges. then lift them upinto place 10 farm the box. 5. Secure the sides and lop with finishingbrads lo r wood screws and a drill. if you don't have access to a naiLgunl. 6 . Repeat steps 2 through 5 for the remaining boxes. 7. Removethe tape. 8, We created supports for the legs from a 4" x 4" piece 01scrap wood, which we cut at a diagonal that left one side approximately2 3ft " and the other 7!S", We then measured and drew out a square onthe underside of the box approximately 2 II,' in from the edge. Finally.we put some wood glue beneath the bottom Iflat endl of the supports,placed a flange on the angled top, and secured the assembly at a 45angle just inside the marked square using four wood screws Longenough to go into, but not through, the top panel.
