Admiral Sir Charles Madden, Com­mander-in-Chief of NATO's Eastern At­lantic Area and Commander-in-Chiefof the British Home Fleet, visited Can­ada July 2-11.

He was in Ottawa July 2-4 for dis­cussions with senior officials of the De­partment of National Defence and thenwent to Kingston, July 5.

On July 6, Admiral Madden em­barked in HMS Tenby, a Whitby classfrigate, at the northern end of the WeI­land Canal for passage down the St.Lawrence Seaway and river, to arriveat Quebec City July 9.

Admiral Madden was to fiy fromQuebec City to Halifax on July 10 andleave Halifax the following day by airfor Britain.

New CommandantFor Royal Roads

Captain William P. Hayes has beenappointed as commandant, CanadianServices College, Royal Roads, effectiveJuly 17.

Captain Hayes bas been serving atNaval Headquarters since September1961, first with the Joint Missile De­fence Staff and later with the Director­ate of Strategic Studies.

He succeeds Group Captain Alan F.Avant who has held the appointmentsince July 1960. Group Captain Avantwill take up a new appointment as com­manding officer of 1 Wing at Marville,France, July 30.

Captain Hayes, who was born in SwiftCurrent, Sask., entered the RoyalCanadian Navy in August 1939 aftergraduating from the Royal Military Col­lege Kingston.

He served in ships of the Royal Navyuntil July 1942 and during this periodwas with the force which launched thenaval air attack on the Italian navalbase at Taranto. He witnessed the sink­ing of an Italian destroyer by his ship,the cruiser HMS York, and took partin the evacuation of Crete. He survivedthe sinking of the York in Suda Bay inMay 1941.

In October 1942, he was appointed tothe Iroquois and served on convoyroutes to Russia and on patrols in theBay of Biscay and the English Channel.In the postwar years, Captain Hayesserved in the destroyer Nootka, andMagnificent and held various shore ap­pointments.

He took command of the destroyerCayuga in February 1953 and, after atour of duty in the Korean War theatre,was appointed officer of Naden, in Janu­ary 1955.

Captain Hayes was appointed forcourses with the United States Navy inJuly, 1958. He commissioned the Col­umbia in November 1959.

He was promoted to his present rankand appointed Commander Fifth Cana­dian Escort Squadron on April 26, 1961.

RN SubmarineVisits East Coast

The British submarine Odin was inHalifax in mid-May for ·a two-dayinformal visit. Commanded by Lt.-Cdr.Simon Burrage, the Odin has a com­plement of 71 officers and men.

The minelayer Bluethroat and oceantug St. Charles were singled out forhigh praise at Newport, Rhode Island,following a recent NATO exercise. Theconvoy commodore said the civllian­manned, Halifax-based ships did anoutstanding job in the convoy, especiallyduring a period of heavy weather inlate April on the North Atlantic.

More recently the St. Cltarles receiveda "well done" from Rear-Admir,al K,L. Dyer, Flag Officer Atlantic Coast,on the excellent seamanship displayedby her master, Captain Walter May, ofDartmouth, in a heavy swell whiletransferring a patient off Halifax fromthe USNS General Maurice Rose on thenight of May 13.

The transport was en route to NewYork from overseas when it becamenecessary to convey a U.S. service­man's child to hospital.

Helicopter AidsInjured Boy

An injured 13-year-old boy was res­cued by two Royal Canadian Navyhelicopter pilots on April 15 from Fin­layson Mountain, 10 miles west of Vic­toria.

The pilots inched their helicopteralong a face of the mountain at tree­top level to pick up the boy, Ken Peach,of Victoria, who suffered head and backinjuries when he fell 30 feet on themountain.

Volunteer rescuers, firemen fromnearby Langford, carried the boy downto the mountain's 100-foot level andstrapped him into a stretcher for ~he

helicopter to pick up. He is in goodcondition in Royal Jubilee Hospital inVictoria.

Sub-Lt. 1. A. Powick, pilot of thecraft, and PO Ronald Greenbury tookthe helicopter into a narrow space withonly 10 feet of clearance on either sidebetween the mountain face and trees,to make the rescue. The helicopter gotout by flying backwards along its course.

On the East Coast, a helicopter wasdespatched from Shearwat-er on May 4at the request of RCMP to search for aseven-year-old boy lost in woods nearSheet Harbour, N.S. The boy found hisway out of the woods while the searchwas in progress.

Artemis JoinsDivision Briefly

The British submarine Artemis joinedthe Sixth Submarine Division at Halifaxfor the first three weeks of June.

She exercised with ships and aircraftof the RCN until leaving the Halifaxstation to meet other commitments ofthe Royal Navy.

Six DDEs Go OnAtlantic Exercises

Six RCN destroyer escorts left HalifaxJune 10 for exercises in the Atlanticto be followed by a six-week trainingcruise to Britain and Europe.

They were the Gatineau (Cdr. J. W.Roberts), the St. Croix (Cdr. D. M.Maclennan), the Ch.audiere (Cdr. R. H.Falls), the Kootenay (Cdr. D. H. Ryan),the Columbia (Cdr. A. E. Fox) and theTerra Nova (Cdr. J. B. Young).

The ships are units of the Fifth Cana­dian Escort Squadron, commanded byCaptain, C. P. Nixon, who was embarkedin the Gatineau.

After fuelling at Plymouth, England,June 23, the ships were to visit Kiel,West Germany, from June 26 to July IfCopenhagen, Denmark, from July 2 to

July 9, and be based at Londonderry,Northern Ireland, from July 13 to 28.The squadron will return to Halifax onAugust 5.

Families TakenOn Short Cruise

May 18 was "family day" for fourdestroyer escorts of the Pacific Com­mand's Second Canadian Escort Squad­ron.

Wives and families of personnel serv­ing in the Fraser, Skeena, Margaree andSaguenay were invited on board theships for a cruise in local waters.

During the five-and-a-half-hourcruise the families witnessed gun-firingpractice, the transfer of personnel fromone ship to another by jackstay, andthe firing of the ships' anti-submarinemortars.

The combination business-and-pleas­ure cruise permitted further training

for ships' companies, and at the sametime gave wives and children of thesailors a first-hand look at a fleet op­eration.

It was the first time that four shipsof the command have joined in such adependents' day cruise.

Anniversary ofBattle Observed

The 150th anniversary of the engage­ment between HMS Shannon and theUSS Chesapeake was commemorated aspart of the regular 11 a.m. service onSunday, June 2, at St. Paul's Churchin Halifax.

A United States Navy task force visit­ing port at that time landed 100 officersand men to attend the service. TheSixth Submarine Division of the RoyalNavy provided British naval representa­tion and the RCN was represented also.The RN-RCN contingents totalled 100.

Canon H. St. C. Hilchey, rector of St.Paul's, conducted the service, assistedby Lt.-Cdr. Edwin J. Nerthling, USN,senior Protestant chaplain of the visit­ing U.S. warships. Captain J. M. West,commanding officer of the aircraftcarrier Essex, read the flrst lesson(Micah 4: 1-5) and Cdr. Kenneth Vause,RN, Commander Sixth SubmarineDivision, the second (Romans 13: 1-9).

Senior naval officers attending in­cluded Rear-Admiral E. E. Christensen,USN, Commander Carrier Division 18,and Rear-Admiral Kenneth L. Dyer,RCN, Flag Officer Atlantic Coast.

Commemoration of this particularengagement was considered appropriatesince it has a prominent place in thehistory of Halifax and of St. Paul's.The presence of British and Americanforces in port on the anniversarystrengthened these historical links.

The New Hydrofoil"::

A PPROVAL has been given to pro­ceed with plans for the design

and construction of a prototype hydro­foil ship for the Royal Canadian Navy,it was announced on May 17 by Hon.Paul Hellyer, Minister of National De­fence. This is a further key step in .aresearch and development program, ina new and unproven field, with theaim of extending and increasing theanti-submarine capability of the RCN.

A contract has been awarded to Thede Havilland Aircraft of Canada Lim­ited, Downsview, Ont., to complete

.the details of design and construct thpprototype. Marine Industries Ltd., of

Sorel, Quebec, has been selected as thesub contractor responsible for the hullassembly and fitting out operations.

It is emphasized that the project isof an experimental nature, and whetherthe hydrofoil craft will be successful inthe anti-submarine role is still to 'bedetermined. However, design studiesand model tests have been promising,and Canada's development of the pro­totype is in areas not covered 'by otherallied countries conducting hydrofoilexperiments.

The Canadian concept has certainunique features which, it is felt, meritdevelopment to the prototype stage so

that the hydrofoil ship can be "givennecessary evaluation tests in rou'gh seaconditions. I

The hydrofoil" craft basically consistsof a hull mounted on struts fitted withlateral blades, or "foils". On' reachinga certain speed, the hull is raised abovethe sea surface by the liff generatedby the foil system.' .

In this state, the craft can' work tipto high speeds and maintains relativelyeven plane.)

The White Ensign of the Royal Canadian Navy will be flown no more by HMCS Lauzon, Halifax­based frigate paid off for disposal on May 24. The Lauzon served during the laller part of theSecond World War. In two postwar commissions she steamed more than a quarter-million mileson the North Atlantic. (HS-48204)

by changes in craft trim as the bowfoil reacts to changes in wave height.No moving parts are required. Signif­icant attributes of this fixed foil sys­tem are reliability, ruggedness and !:lase·of maint.enance. ~

Studies into the adaptation of hydro­foil craft to naval usage were begun atHalifax in 1951 by the Naval ResearchEstablishment of the Defence ResearchBoard. First experiments were carriedout by NRE with a 45-foot boat ac­quired from a private owner and fittedwith a "ladder" foil unit as continuationof the work started by AlexanderGraham Bell and F. W. (Casey) Bald­win on the Bras d'Or Lakes in NovaScotia in 1919.

In 1957 a larger craft, built in Britainfor the Defence Research Board, wasbrought to Halifax on board HMCSBonaventure and was made the subjectof further NRE experiments. In addi­tion, the NRE scientists used a small,barge-like experimental craft to testvarious types of foils.

These studies culminated in a detailedproposal by NRE for a full-scale all­weather ocean-going hydrofoil craftand in 1960 the Department of DefenceProduction placed a contract with Thede Havilland Aircraft of Canada for adesign study based on this proposal.In so far as could be determined throughthe use of scale models and scientificand engineering studies, the de Havil­land project established that such ahydrofoil craft was feasible. On thisbasis, approval has been given to pro­ceed with detailed design and construc­tion of a prototype.

Hydrofoil craft are in commercialservice in several parts of the worldbut there is .none in existence havingcharacteristics needed for a vehiclecapable of performing in the wide rangeof weather and sea conditioQ encount­ered on the high seas.

Design and construction of the pro­totype is expected to take about threeyears. On completion, the vehicle willbe put through extensive trials to de- .termine' its seakeeping qualities. Nextstep in the program will be the testingof equipment and weapons under' oper­ational. conditions.

The vehicle will be approximately 150feet in length, will displace about 180tons and will be capable of speeds inexcess of 50 knots. The craft will havetwo propulsion systems: a marine dieselengine,for use when operating in thedisplacement conditions and a gas tur­~ine ,for; use. when foil-borne.

The hydrofoU craft offers promise ofperforming a variety of roles, com­mercial as well as military.

Lauzon RetiresFrom Service

The frigate Lauzon was paid off fordisposal on May 24 in a ceremony inthe Dockyard at Halifax.

The ship's company was addressedby Lt.-Cdr. C. E. M. Leighton, com­manding officer. CPO B. G. Penwarnpresented a cheque for $2,500 to CaptainW. M. Kidd, president of the Fleet ClubAdvisory Council, towards the establish­ment of permanent new quarters for theclub. The money was accumulatedthrough canteen profits and non-publicfunds in the ship.

CPO Penwarn also presented a TV setfor use in the existing club, whichopened May 11 for the benefit of theleading seamen and below of the fleetin the former chief and petty officers'lounge at Stadacona.

AB R. C. Downey, a sonarman withalmost four years' service in the Lauzon,presented another TV set to the Cana­dian Forces Hospital. It was acceptedby the matron, Lt.-Cdr. (NS) GraceWalker.

Following prayers by the EasternCommand chaplains, Chaplain (P)Bruce Peglar and Chaplain (RC) JamesMacLean, the Stadacona band playedtwo verses of the Naval Hymn. TheSunset Hymn and National Anthem fol­lowed, at which time the Lauzon's WhiteEnsign, commissioning pennant andCanadian jack. were lowered for thelast time. The ship's company marchedoff to "Heart of Oak".

The frigate will be disposed ofthrough Crown Assets for scrap, afterall items useful to the fleet have beenremoved.

dog and, if there's some left over,give it to your horse. If unexpectedguests drop in, drag it out again andfeed it to them;

Twist it, tramp on it, throw all buta pinch of it away, tuck it into yourshirt pocket and bring it out again nextday for another meal all around.

What is this magical food, you ask?Why, that wonderful leftover of left­overs-sourdough. The staple of thenorthland kept many a prospector fromstarvation in Gold Rush days.

Sourdough still is used extensivelytoday, by outdoorsmen everywhere andmore particularly in the northland. Forinstance, Mrs. Ruth Allman of Juneau,Alaska, brought out her 40-year-oldleftover for a group of officers and menof the Fourth Canadian Escort Squadronfrigates New Glasgow and Ste. There'se.

The frigates called in at the Alaskastate capital in April while on a north-.ern patrol.

Mrs. Allman kept the luncheon partyentranced for more than two hours withtales of old Alaska. She is well qualifiedto speak on the subject as she and herhusband, the late Jack Allman, pros­pected throughout the north in the1920s and '30s.

THE FACTS ABOUTSOURDOUGH

Could be that sourdough flap­jacks will be standard items onthe menu of HMCS Yukon, pro­viding the cooks find out what todo with that "sourdough starter,"presented to the ship on behalf ofYukon Territory. If they don'tknow what the starter is for, theycan ask the people on board HMCSSte. Therese, who made a visit toJuneau, Alaska, in April andthereby became authorities in thisstaple item of the Trail of '98.

Lt. A. G. Gibson, informationofficer witlt HMCS Malahat, Vic­toria naval division, was in theSte. Therese for training and sawtlte sourdough starter in actionwhen he was a guest in an Alas"/{anhome. He tells all about it inthe accompanying article.

Mrs. Allman's main claim to fame,however, is the fact that she's the nieceof the famous Alaska district courtjudge, author and explorer, the lateJames Wickersham. !

All of the famed judge's books,Eskimo and Indian artifacts and evenhis 70-year-old two-storey frame houseup on Chicken Ridge in Juneau havebeen kept in fine condition by Mrs.Allman.

She now makes tourists welcome yeararound with her unique lunches andstories of the Panhandle. Mrs. Allmanneed only turn around in her chair toreach for a book, a diary or photostatsto help explain some phase of theWickersham saga.

But it's that small wad of dough thatMrs. Allman keeps in an earthenwarepot that interests the Chechako (or new­comer to Alaska) the most.

Mrs. Allman has used this fist-sizedbit of sourdough for more than 40 years,storing it, in the refrigerator in itsdormant state. She could double its sizein less than a minute by just addingflour and water and ,have three tubfulsof the doughy mass by next morning.

Three gifts were bestowed by Yukon Territory on HMCS Yukon when she was cammissioned in North Vancouver on May 25. Roy Minter, of Van­couver, officially representing the Yukon commissioner and territory, gave the ship's captain, Cdr. R. W. J. Cocks, Yukon licence plates for the Yukon'sjeep, bearing the ship's hull number, a badge of the territory and some sourdough pancake starter (yeast) said to be descended from the days of theKlondike gold rush of '98. But waffles are only one baking by­product of sourdough. You can makedoughnuts, cakes, breads-in fact almostanything in the baking line from it.

The natural question about now mustbe: Of what is sourdough made? It'smerely some mashed potato that's beenfermented, then stored in a cool temper­'ature. In other words, a source of yeast.

-- All the old prospector had to worryabout packing around with him was hispinch of sourdough (perhaps tucked inan old tobacco can) and a sack of flour.The wild Alaska rose was his main 'source of vitamins to ward off thedreaded scurvy.

In fact, down there, in the smallprint on today's vitamin bottle, it maybe acknowledged that rose hips are itsbase.

The opening remarks about theanimals eating sourdough are no exag­geration either. It was often sourdoughor nothing for a dog-team, packhorseor mule when the weather closed in outon the trail. Mrs. Allman had a cat tll'l.trefused to eat much else.

young seaman passed the remark thathe thought every mess should have itsown sourdough. --.

Now if somebody will just pass theflour and water, and turn up the griddle,it's hands to supper. But before youdig in, there is a grace that accompaniesa meal involving sourdough. It has beenadopted by the International Sour­doughs' Reunion and is to be said bySourdoughs the world over whereverthey gather. The word "Sourdough" isthe nickname of the men of the GoldRush.

The grace, written by another famousfigure of the North, the "Sky. Pilot ofthe Yukon", the late Rev. George C.F. Pringle, is as follows:

She eliminates the problem of startingthe sourdough culture of fermentedpotato by selling small quantities ofpowder already made up and this seemsto the writer to be the safest course.

Select a sourdough pot-a wide­mouthed glass jar or bean pot is ideal.Never use a metal dish or spoon. Awooden spoon is a must.

Dump a packet of sourdough mix intothe pot. Add only white flour and warmwater to the consistency of thick richcream.

Be sure to allow space for expansionfor sourdough will start "working" im­mediately and more than double its size.

At night, mix the starter for themorning stack of sourdough waffles orpancakes. Remember, flour and wateradded the night before, never in themorning when it's to be used.

Recipe for hotcakes or waffles:Pour into mixing bowl two cups of

starter that's been sitting over­night;add one egg;two tablespoonsful of sugar;four tablespoonsful of cooking oil.

When - ready to bake, fold in oneteaspoonful of bicarbonate of sodastirred in a jigger of water. (Incident­ally, Mrs. Allman says it's best to usethe little finger of your left hand forthis operation as it's generally thecleanest). Then gently mix and thesourdough will thicken and soundhollow like whipped cream.

They replace sailors in shore postsinvolving operations, communications.medicine and supply. helping to main­tain the HCN's high sea-shore ratio.

HMCS Stadacona employs the most,some 85· wrens. Others are at the HCNAir Station. HMCS Sltearwater; HMCSShelburne. oceanographic station. andHMCS Cornwallis. Annapolis Basintraining establishment. Two serve atNaval Headquarters in Ottawa. six areat the medical school in Camp Borden,Ontario, and one is on the West Coast.

He was born in OriIlia, Ontario, in1935, and entered the Nl\vy in 1952. Hewas promoted to sub-lieutenant in Sep­tember 1960, At college, he maintainednaval connections, serving on specialduty in ships and establishments dur­ing the summer. He has said that hewould like to be a naval chaplaineventually.

At the beginning of June, Sub-Lt.Benner was ordained in the UnitedChurch of Canada.

New StructureFor Jrl'ren Trades

Introduction of a new structure andspecifications for wren trades in theRCN has been announced by NavalHeadquarters. Revised trade specifica­tions are in course of promulgation.

The new structure includes the fol­lowing trades: Wren Secretary (SS),Wren Accounts (SA), Wren Medicaltrades, Communications Operator (CO)and a new trade of Naval Operations(NO), which combines the duties ofthe former Seaward Defence (SD) andNavigation Plot (NP). The NO tradewill comprise the largest number ofwrens.

The trade of Wren Personnel Rate(WP) is being retained in the newstructure on a transitional basis andspecifications are under revision.

The Wren Medical trades are includedin the current CFMS trade revIsion andspecifications will be promulgated sep­arately.

"Navalaire"Welcomed Back

The end of May saw the welcome re­appearance of The Navalaire, fort­nightly newspaper of. HMCS Shear­water, after an absence of severalmonths.

The first number of the new series isa 16-page, semi-tabloid production ongood quality paper, with what appearsto be substantial support from the ad­vertisers-an essential for a newspaperpublished from non-public funds.

The managing editor is Lt. G. E.(Jan) Salter, photographic officer atShearwater, and his assistant is CPO L.T. Edwards. Circulation is the respon­sibility of AB W. N. Cridland.

In welcoming the return of ·TheNavalaire, Captain G .. C. Edwards, com­manding officer of Shearwater, pointedout that the naval air base is the largestshore establishment in the RCN and thatthe newspaper had in the past per­formed a most useful function in dis­seminating news to naval and civilianpersonnel serving. there.

Twenty-four chief petty officers andpetty officers of the· Royal CanadianNavy have been promoted to the rankof commissioned officer after completingan eight-month limited duty officers'qualifying. course at the Fleet School,HMCS Naden.

Sackville JoinsNorthern Cruise

When the Canadian ~aval AuxiliaryVessel Sackville sailed for the far northin Mayas part of Canada's contributionto the special program of. the- Inter­national Committee on North AtlanticFisheries, she carried a member of theRCN's meteorological. staff from Shear­water.

PO John Hebgin sailed with the Sack­ville as a meteorological observer.

The Sackville, a former corvette sail­ing with the ICNAF fleet, is engaged inan oceanographic and biological survey.

Ships representing Denmark, France,West Germany, Iceland, the UnitedKingdom, Russia. and Canada are in­cluded in the special survey which iscovering an area of more than 1,000,000square miles. The area lies. off thesouthern coast of Greenland and theCanadian shore of Davis Strait.

PO Hebgin is looking after ice andweather forecasts and reports for theCanadian ships CNAV Sackville andCCGS Baffin. He joined the SackviUeMay 20.

"Up periscope!"This could well be the cry that marks the open­

ing of official busine-sss at the old Craw's Nest Clubin St. John's, Newfoundland.

The club was founded in January 1942 as a Sea­going Officers' Club for naval and merchant serviceofficers visiti:ng the Old Colony, was closed for a fewmonths after the Second World War and then re­opened as a club for serving and former officers of thethree armed services and merchant service.

That it is still largely nautical in character isattested to by the fact that it is now navigated bypersicope. Members, if they are so minded, can inspectthe rooftops and waterfront of St. John's through whatwas once the all-seeing eye of the German submarineU...190.

The U-190 surrendered to HMeS Victoriaville offNewfoundland on May 12, 1945. She was escorted to

Bay Bulls, paid a brief visit to St. John's and thenoperated out of Halifax under the White Ensign fora couple of years. Stripped of valuable equipment,the U-190 was taken to sea in the summer of 1947 andsunk in an anti-submarine e·xercise.

The periscope had- been placed in the custody ofthe Maritime Museum of Canada in Halifax. Now,through the efforts of Commodore E. N. Clarke, Com­modore Superintendent Atlantic Coast and Superin­tendent HMC Dockyard, Halifax, a charter memberof the Crow's Nest Club, the periscope has been re­turned to the first land it visited as part of a recentlyCanadianized submarine. It took. a crane with an im­pressively long boom to lower the periscope to theroof of the club on the top floor of a four-storey build­ing on Haymarket Hill on a recent quiet Sunday.

One of VS 880's commitments whiledeployed to the USAF base at Charle­ston, South Carolina, in June, was toco-operate in anti-submarine exerciseswith Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla Six ofthe United States Navy.

Rear-Admiral J. W. Ailes, Com­mander of Cruiser Destroyer FlotillaSix, showed a keen interest in theoperations of his CRUDESFLOTSIX.He flew with Lt. K. P. Sheedy, RCN,in a Canadian Tracker, to gain firsthand knowledge of progress being made.The USN ships were totally unawareof the presence of their commander.Lt. Sheedy said he carried out hisnormal tasks while the Admiral justsat back and observed.

The admiral caused some little degreeof consternation in his ships, however,when he spoke to them before leaving,identifying himself with his personalcall sign. After the plane had landed atCharleston Air Force Base, the com­manding officer of VS 880, Cdr. R. C.MacLean, presented Admiral Ailes witha copy of the squadron badge.

In Charleston, as always, the USNshowed every consideration to the RCN.Admiral' Ailes sent Lt. Sheedy a letterthanking him for his flight in theTracker and praising his proficiency asa pilot and ASW tactician.

Prevost's Captain"Towed" Ashore

Traditional naval protocol for retiringcommanding officers was followed asclosely as possible for Captain G. A.Maclachlan when he relinguished com-

mand of the London naval division,HMCS Prevost. Lack of navigable water,however, led to a one-letter changewhich made "rowed" into "towed".

When Captain Maclachlan's retire­ment came up, personnel at the divisionfabricated a likeness of a boat, mountedit on a dolly and decided to let theirparade square double as the ocean.Appropriate signs adorned the stern andsuperstructure, like "Wot! No water?"under a Kilroy-was-here face.

After Captain Maclachlan had climbedon board the single-masted craft tomark his formal retirement, his· officerstowed him around the parade to theresounding cheers of his ass~mbled

ship's company. He had served in thereserve for 23 years, of which the lastfour-and-a-half were in command.

Following a march-past, Cdr. D. W.Paddell witnessed the signing of thechange of command document in whichCdr. H. W. Littleford took over.

Captain Maclachlan's last official actwas to present two Canadian ForcesDecorations.

Prevost's new executive officer is Lt.G. A. Baker.

Se1,en, Awards forSu.pply Depot

One award of honour and six certifi­cates of merit were presented to theAviation Supply Depot, Dartmouth, atthe 44th annual meeting of the NovaScotia Accident Prevention Association.

The award of honour is for companies,employing 20 or more employees,which have operated 365 days without alost-time accident.

Certificates of merit are awarded todepartments or groups of' departments,employing 20 or more employees, whichhave worked a calendar year withouta lost-time accident.

Awards were presented to the varioussupervisors by Cdr. R. V. P. Bowditch,Officer-in-Charge, Aviation Supply De­pot, Dartmouth. It was pointed out thatthe award of honour achieved by thedepot was one of 14 awarded by theNova Scotia Accident Prevention Asso­ciation throughout the province.

CORRECTIONFour lines of type were transposed in

Reserve WrenOfficer Promoted

Promotion to the rank of lieutenant­commander is a rare achievement for awren. Only three wrens have that rankin the Royal Canadian Navy and one inthe RCN Reserve.

Provision exists for just one lieuten­ant-commander in the RCNR structureand, as a matter of fact, only two haveheld that rank since the return of wrensto the Reserve in 1961.

The first was Lt.-Cdr. Carol Sellars,of HMCS Discovery, Vancouver navaldivision, who is now on the' retired list.

The second to achieve this rank is Lt.­Cdr. Edith J. Williams, of HMCS Chip­pawa, Winnipeg naval division, who waspromoted on April 22.

Lt.-Cdr. Williams joined the war-timeWRCNS in Regina on January 6, 1945,as a probationary wren writer. Sheserved in several establishments includ­ing HMCS Conestoga, Wren basic train­ing establishment 'at Galt, Ontario, dur­ing the Second World War. She left theservice April 22, 1946, as a wren writer.

When the wrens were reorgani:<:ed,she enrolled in October 1951 in the rankof acting sub-lieuteant and assumed theduties of wren divisional officer inHMCS Queen, Regina naval division.

In 1956 she was transferred to Winni­peg by her civilian employers andjoined Chippawa. Her promotion tolieutenant was confirmed in June 1959although she had held the acting rankof lieutenant since June 1955.

In civilian life she is secretary to theDean of Dentistry at the University ofManitoba.

Chippawa boasts the largest wren di­vision in Canada, with a full comple­ment of 50, and much credit for thisachievement 'must go to Lt.-Cdr.Williams.

I N THE Royal Canadian Dental C.orpsclinic in HMC Dockyard, Hallfax,

the dental officer prepares a patient'stooth, straightens up and leave's thecubicle. He also leaves a mystifiedpatient.

But not for long.

Sergeant-Major (W02) Hilton Thor­son, Danish-born, B.C.-educated, movesin quickly and continues the treatment.As a "Technical Dental Therapist", he'sthe only one of his kind in the Halifaxarea and one of three to date in theRoyal Canadian Dental Corps.

Sergeant-Major Thorsson has beentrained to insert fillings, make impres­sions, carry out minor denture repairsand administer dental first aid. He isthe dental officer's right hand man andis trained to do anything which doesn'tinterfere with the oral structure of thepatient. This means he can't giveanaesthetics, design dentures, do cavitypreparations, pulp conservation orsurgery.

This is all part of a study being con­ducted by the Royal Canadian DentalCorps to determine whether such auxil­iary dental personnel can be trained to"carry out certain restricted proceduresat the chair under the supervision of adental officer and whether they can beemployed effectively in the dental clin­ics throughout the Corps.

The advent of Sergeant-Major Thors­son as a therapist at the beginning ofthis year in the clinic heralds a trendin the Dental Corps of equal importance,say, to the' steps long since taken byhospitals, who permit orderlies to giveinjections to patients, nurses to handleintravenous feedings, and lab tech­niCians to take their ow~ ,samples fortest. Much routine work \thus is re­moved from a doctor's busy rounds.

Sergeant-Major Thorsson is a directentry into the Royal Canadian DentalCorps. The corps looks after the dental

requirements of all the armed forcesalthough for purposes of pay and ad­ministration it comes under Armyauspices, and the personnel are uni­formed and ranked accordingly.

The sergeant-major, whose familysettled in Langley, B.C., in the 20s,started as a dental assistant in 1951 andprogressed to the Trade Group II level.He was selected from that trade fortraining as a clinical "hygienist" andattained the top trade level (Group IV).Last surtlmer he was selected to take acour'se of several months at the RCDCSchool in Camp Borden, .Ontario, toemerge as 'a therapist. His class wassmall and its graduates distributed toHMCS Naden, RCN Barracks, Esqui­malt; the Army's Camp Borden andHMC Dockyard, Halifax.

Major R. E. Dyer, who is in chargeof the Dockyard Dental Clinic, considersthe work of Sergeant-Major Thorssonand his select breed is one of the moresignificant things that have happenedin the corps in the past 18 years, and"there have been many significantthings"

Major Dyer says: "I can see threepatients in 50 minutes now, whereasbefore I saw two in an hour." SinceFebruary 1961, when the major tookover the clinic, until March of this year,the Dockyard Dental Clinic, whichcaters largely to sea-going personnel,had a total of 16,649 patient appoint­ments in 405 actual working days.Treatment.was carried out by a staff of10 (all ranks),' of whom three weredentists.

Major Dyer, reorganizing his clinicstaff to take the fullest possibI~ advan­tage of Thorsson's welcome qualifica­tions, fervently hopes the trend willcontinue.

Whether technical therapists will con­tinue to be trained and employed in theCorps will depend on the outcome ofthe study which has been underway forthe past two. years and is expected tocontinue for at least another six months.

Meanwhile, Sergeant-Major Thorsson,who has taken to the work like a duckto water, says, "I'm keeping my fingerscrossed."

W HEN BOYS had finished their.training in the Lion, they

awaited drafting as required. llequestswould come in for so many boys forthe Chann.el Fleet or the ChinaSquadron or elsewhere. Chance decidedtheir immediate destination. It fell tomy lot to go with about 30 other boys

" to the surveying ship Egeria then at­tached to the Pacific station. We weresent to the depot ship Agincourt atPortland to await the rest of the ship'scompany from Chatham, a crew consist­ing of 122 ratings and 12 officers. Wealso had a number of other seamen inthe complement who were proceeding torelieve those on the Pacific station whowere time expired or who were beinginvalided out of the service. In the endwe numbered about 200 in all.

At that time, in January 1900, theEgeria lay at Esquimalt, the naval baseon Vancouver Island in British Co...lumbia, about three miles from Vic­toria, the capital of the province.

It was considered more economical tosend the new ship's company to thePacific Coast rather than bring theEgeria back home round the Horn, forthere was no Panama Canal in thosedays. It was therefore arranged thatwe should travel by the most directroute and, after everyone had beenassembled at Portland, we entrainedfor Liverpool where we embarked onthe Allan liner .Tunisian. It was not aquestion of travelling liner fashion forour ship's company. We had to sling ourhammocks in the steerage quarters ofthe ship the same as we had done sooften in the Lion. We did not know untilthe Tunisian had put to sea that shehad only rceently carried a cargo ofcattle, some of which had been stalledin our accommodation.

I T WAS NO holiday trip for.us bOY.s.Each day we were told off to do

physical jerks and rifle drill withbroomsticks taking the place of rifles.As we swung them to and for to keeptime with the ship's band playing suchmusic hall favourites as "Sweet RosieO'Grady~', "Comrades" and "Waiting atthe Church", the passengers seemed tothink we were doing it for their benefit.And this was followed by Swedish drill,riding the vaulting horse and doingelaborate tricks on the parallel bars.

Fortunately we were only called on tomake a public exhibition of ourselves inthe mornings-the rest of the time dur­ing the eight-day crossing to Halifaxwe were on our own.

At Halifax, where we were quarteredin military barracks, we had time tolook round the town, before getting intoa special train the following morningthat took another eight days to makethe 3,640 miles across Canada to 'Van""!couver.

I suppose it was the most excitingrailway journey in the world. Westopped for an hour every day forexercise except when travelling throughpart of the American state of Maine. Iguess the authorities knew a thing ortwo. If a man deserted on United States

soil, it would have been the devil's ownjob to reclaim him. Not that any suchthought entered the heads of our littleband of eager boys. We. had embarkedon a high adventure which had beenworth every moment of those days ofhardship and near privation in theDevonport training hulk.

Because ours was a. special train itmoved at a leisurely pace. We seemedto crawl through the long stretches ofprairie land, with. its miles of tall grassundulating in the breeze like wavesapproaching a lee shore. There werehalts. at Montreal and ottawa and onthe shores of Lake Superior. Whenevera long-distance express was signalledour train was shunted into a sidingand we watched it thunder by, waitingfor a long time before our locomotivegot up steam again. We had time tostudy a special guide book we had beengiven, with information about placesalong the line arid learned a lot aboutMoose Jaw and Medicine Hat, altoughwe saw few cowboys and, alas, noIndians.

At the foothills of the RockyMountains, observation cars were at­tached to our special so that we couldsee the grandeur of the scenery incomfort. At Calgary came ·an extraengine with a hugh snow plough tokeep the track clear and another at the

back to act as a brake:when decendingsteep inclines and to give. an extra·shovewhen climbing·. Once we had scaledthe mountain barrier it. was sometimesimpossible to see the bottom of theravine on tJ.le side or the summit ofthe peak on the other. In places thetrack was covered with snow sheds toavoid danger from avalanches or heavysnowfalls.

There was a six-hour halt at Banffwhere we watched people skiing andtoboganning, a new experience for mostof us. We knew nothing about wintersports but we organized a snowballfight with the locals. They knew muchmore about such things than we didand that day the British Navy had toacknowledge a signal defeat.

A T AN ALTITUDE of 5,337 feet wereached the Great Divide, where

a notice informed us that we wereentering British Columbia. The descentwas so steep on the other side thatit was obvious why a rear engine hadbeen called into service. It was taken offwhen we came to Revelstoke, at the footof the western slope of the mountainbarrier. And so past Kamloops to Van­couver City,.

It took seven hours to cross theGeorgia Strait to Esquimalt, the head...quarters of the Pacific station, which wereached on March 5, 1900, and thenext day Cdr. Simpson assumed com­mand of the Egeria.

T HE BRITISH NAVY at the turnof the century was a real world

force. Its strength was spread overevery part of the world. The Pacificfleet was only one of several. Therewere the Channel Fleet, the AtlanticFleet and· the Mediterranean Fleet andothers in the South Atlantic, the WestIndies, the China Seas and the EastIndies.

The various overseas naval formationsoperated together. For example thePacific Fleet based on Esquimalt had aregular rendezvous with the. Australianfleet on the annual cruise to Honolulu.The West Indies Squadron, so called,manoeuvered in the North and SouthAtlantic between Halifax and the Falk­land Islands, The East India Squadronhad bases .at Bombay and in Ceylonand kept an eye on the Persian Gulf "toprevent slave traffic. piracy, and we all know the part theRoyal Navy played in suppressing theBoxer rebellion and in the relief of theinternational legations at Peking in1900. And it was the navy which sup­plied the 4.7 guns for HMS Powerful,commanded by Captain Percy Scott,which were so important in the reliefof Ladysmith during the South AfricanWar.

The Royal Navy was everywhere, "asecurity to such as pass upon the seasupon their lawful occasions". It israther different now when the Dom­inions and other countries of the Com­monwealth have their own naval pro­tection but I like to think, and indeedin myoId age I believe, that the samespirit and tradition still prevail as whenI was a boy.

The Pacific Fleet was not very bigbut it was substantial enough. When

I arrived at Esquimalt the flagship wasHMS Warspite (Rear-Admiral Beau­mont), a first class cruiser of 8,400 tonsand a crew of 527 officers and mim.She mounted four 9.2 guns and ten6-inch guns and could steam at 16knots. The second class cruisers Phaetanand 4.mphion (each 4,300 tons) werefaster, with 16.6 knots and 5,000 horse­power. There were two sloops-theShearwater and Icarus (each 980 tons­and the Condor, then on her way tojoin the fleet and to which I shall referlater. The effective strength of theformation was brought up by the twofast destroyers Sparrowhawk andVirago of 300 tons. The Egeria was nota combat vessel. She was employed onmarine surveying work off the coast ofBritish Columbia and only joined upwith the main squadron in winter timeor for the July celebrations of DominionDay.

T HE EGERIA was a screw survey­ing sloop of 940 tons, 160 feet long,

with a beam of 31 feet. She was 27years old, having been built at Pem­broke in 1873 at a cost of £42,882. (Iwonder what a similar ship would costtoday). She drew 14 feet, 3 inches, ofwater and her only armament was two20-pounder bneach-Ioading guns andtwo machine guns-a five-barrelledNordenfelt and a Maxim, both mountedon high pedestals on top the poop. Therewas also a brass mortar, originalllyintended for judging distances, by com­paring the rates of light and sound, butlong since disused. For the youngermembers of the crew, it was just some­thing to keep bright and shiny. Shecarried 100 tons of coal for her auxiliaryengines but coaling ship was just asstrenuous~and dirty-as for a muchbigger vessel, for all the coal had tobe carried in baskets through the gun

ports along the deck to chutes. At steam,she could make about 11 knots but shewas rigged as a barque and went bysail as often as possible.

The men from, Chatham who hadtravelled 7,000 miles from the Medwayto join her were a tough company.Among them were recovered desertersand inveterate drunks who did not carea fig for authority. It was said that theywere sent to the Egeria so that theycould abscond in some obscure placeand never be found again. It was alsowell known that there were agents onthe American shore who could be bribedinto giving shelter to deserting Britishsailors .It was all arl"anged by JackDay's Hotel, the only hostelry of anyimportance in the village of Esquimalt.Here contact could be made withAmerican go-betweens who would bringalong a suit of civilian clothes and awad of dollar bills. The :money wasrepaid out of the earnings of the manwhen he had crossed the border; thepercentage demanded was such as wouldmake the most rapacious moneylenderflinch. These sharks made a dead setat the crew of the Egeria once theyknew the type of men that formed thenew complement. If a man had a tradesuch as a blacksmith, carpenter orpainter ,then the inducement wasdoubled, but even unskilled men werepromised fancy wages as labourers andwere induced to desert. And so many didthat on one occasion we had such ashortage of hands that we could not putto sea until replacements were sentfrom the fleet.

Most of the deserters were quite use­less on board and the authorities madeno undue efforts to recover them. Theywere just posted a.s deserters and it wasleft at that. Our blacksmith, was not solucky. He had deserted almost as soonas we reached Esquimalt and crossedthe border where, after a while, he did,very well for himself. Two years laterhe was stupid enough to write to oneof his old buddies in the Egeria askinghim to come down to Jack Day's placeto celebrate. All might have been wellbut somehow one of the officers gotwind of what was going on. This wasreally too much. Had the blacks,mithstayed in Seattle no one would haveminded very much. But to come and getdrunk in the only hotel at the basewas going too far. A file of marineswas waiting for him. He was court-

martialled and given 90 days, afterwhich he had to serve the rest of histime instead of being discharged.

W I-IEN WE WENT to sea our jobwas to survey the inland waters

of British Columbia, which had lastbeen surveyed 'by Captain Vancouver100 years before. It was mostly in theStrait of Georgia which stretches thewhole length of Vancouver Island, some285 miles from Victoria in the south toQueen Charlotte Sound in the north.It is: 20 miles wide on an average, sothat we were rarely out' of sight ofshore. It is filled with little islands andsubmerged r~cks which we had to locateby soundings.

The whole of the ship's company,including petty officers, stok~rs, "idlers"and seamen were accommodated in asingle mess deck. The chief petty officerand the master-at-arms occupied whatlooked like horseboxes which' were sodesigned that by looking over the edgethey could keep an eye on the crew,There was a similar sort of box forthe writer who acted as the captain'sclerk and for the ship's steward. Thefirst class petty officers messed by them­selves as did the stokers. The daymenwho kept no night watches, such as the

,armourer, blacksmith, carpenters, but­chers, painters and other artisans, alsohad their own accommodation. Thesewere the "idlers" to whom I havealready referred.

The seamen paid ;for their own mess­ing, which amounted to a tidy sum atthe end of the month. The boys paidnothing, and they could hardy be ex­pected to on their miserable pay. In­stead they acted as lackeys .and bottle­washers for the older men and pettyofficers, and took their turn as cooks.

F' ODD WAS plaih and there was': not. too much of it. The standard issue

of rations when I first joined was flour,cocoa, salt pork and beef,(sometim'esfresh meat when in harbour) split peas,salt, ship's biscuit (again bread whenin harbour) and lime juice to keep awayscurvy. We also had a daily allowanceof tea, sugar, preserved fruit and thenecessary condiments.

While in harbour there was generallya fair supply of fresh provisions butwhen we went to sea we could onlytake on board stocks to last a week,After that biscuits were issued in placeof bread. They were hexagonal in shape

and your guess is as good as mine as tohow long they had been in the vic...tualling yard. They were as hard as abrick. If you gave them a sharp knock,you would see the weevils fallout. Itwas the test of a hardened seaman thathe could break a ship's biscuit on, hisforehead. The salt pork disintegratedinto shreds when cooked but salt beefremained a hard lump no matter howlong it was boiled. And the fat re­maining in the harness casks washanded to the cooks to make pastry.

You had a basin of cocoa on turningout, with breakfast at 8 o'clock, dinnerat noon and tea at 4.15. After that therewas nothing until next morning unlessyou scrounged some bread and cheese orbiscuits. The commander and themaster-at-arms went the rounds at ninea.m. and at 10 p.m. all lights went outand you were piped down until nextmorning. We also had to be very carefulabout fresh water although we werenever rationed.

Each man was issued with a pound ofleaf tobacco on the first of the monthfor which he was charged a shilling.The tobacco had to be stemmed andthe stalks returned to make snuff. Itgave the leaves added flavour if yousteeped them in a little rum beforerolling them out in sacking into a "prig".The "prig" became ~uperfine tobacco,so hard that it had to be cut with ajack knife and shredded before using,You could also cut off "quids" for chew­ing but in all my service I never gotround to that.

Fat a young rating who had no tastefor hard liquor the daily rum rationcame in as a useful means of barter.You could get a lot of things done foryou by the ship's carpenter or the otherartisans if you handed over your tot ofrUt:n. Even in those days, however,there were many men who went withouttheir grog and took a money allowance

I have mentioned the difficulties aboutwater. In such a small ship it wasalways in short supply. One t~b wassent to each mess for morning ablutionand as the boys come last it was prettygrimy when it eventually reached them.The ship's water tank was always keptpadlocked and we irreverently parodieda well known hymn "Tanky, tanky,tanky, serve out washing water; allhands are waiting to scrub a~.d washtheir clothes".

A VISIT TO MAZATLANF OUR SHIPS of the Pacific Com­

mand steamed from Esquimalt onMarch 25 last on an eventful six-weektrip to southern waters.

HMC Ships Margaree and Saguenayof the Second Canadian Escort Squadronsailed together for gun~ery exercisesalong the way, and the Skeena had thehonoured task of bping a part of theCanadian team guarding the route overwhich Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth IIand His Royal Highness the PrincePhilip flew from Australia and NewZealand via Vancouver, to England.

HMCS Cape Breton, escort mainten­ance ship, sailed independently to SanFrancisco.

Even though it is a relatively shortvoyage to San' Francisco, this one hadits moments. After a hasty retreat toCape Flattery and Port San Juan witha suspected appendectomy case, theships drove their way southwardthrough a heavy storm off Cape Blanco,something not unexpected at that timeof year.

In a matter of houts, the barometerhad dropped ominously. All upper deckhands were busy, making last-minutepreparations for the storm. The windincreased to 70' knots and the seachanged from glassy hillocks to rough

mountains of black water capped withwhite foam and blowing spray. Variousspeeds were ordered in an attempt toride the sea and swell comfortably andsafely, but with little luck. The shiptook several heavy waves across thedecks and suffered damage to some ofthe fittings.

Abating as fast as it had built up, thestorm was over only a few hours laterand was soon practically forgotten. Twodays later, on March 29, the Margareeand Saguenay arrived in San Francisco,berthing alongside at Treasure Island,followed by the Skeena and Cape Bretonthe next morning.

San Francisco, with its varied. en­tertainment and sights is a leaveport always enjoyed by Canadian sail­ors and this visit proved to be no ex­ception.

The squadron left San Francisco onApril 1 and the next few days were busyones on two counts. Her Majesty's Cana­dian Forces afloat had the opportunityto exercise their right to vote in the

Federal general elections. The polls forthe first three days of April gave thoseinvolved in evolutions plenty of time tovote. The remainder of the time on thisleg of the journey was occupied in ex­ercising with the Cape Breton. The key­note of the exercises was alongside re­plenishment both at night and duringthe day. Keen competition amongst thethree descroyer escorts increased theirspeed and efficiency in this evolution:

Arriving in San Diego on April 5, theships commenced a pleasant 10-daystay. The squadron took advantage ofthe excellent training facilities offeredby the USN to send several sonarmento the naval ASW School. Captain G.H. Hayes, Commander Second CanadianEscort Squadron, and his staff visitedthe ASW School, Anti-Aircraft WarfareTraining Centre and Navy ElectronicsLaboratory. Early in the week, CaptainHayes paid official calls on Rear-Ad­miral A. E. Loomis, Commandant, 11thNaval District, and Vice-Admiral R. T.S. Keith, Commander, 1st Fleet.

But all was not work in San Diego­"Make and mend" routine was carriedout whenever possible. Twice the USNorganized much appreciated tours ofthe San Diego area. RCN personnelwere invited to use the recreationalfacilities of the USN and passes weregiven to the city's world-famous BalboaZoo. Early Saturday morning, two bus­loads of men, composed mostly of or­dinary seamen who had not previouslyvisited San Diego, left for Disneyland.Even those for whom it was a secondtrip thoroughly enjoyed the excursion.

Three days of the next week at seawere spent exercising with USN sub­marines, ASW ships and aircraft. Bythis time, the Cape Breton had left SanDiego for home. When working withthe Americans, an invaluable exchangeof information takes place on bothsides. Recently learned new techniques,their merits or their faults can be as­sessed, thereby permitting the USN andthe RCN to improve their ASW capa­bilities to a common end.

On April 20, an unscheduled stop wasmade in one of the Pacific Fleet'sfavourite hiding places, Magdalena Bay.Ships' companies took advantage of thequiet night at anchor to hold "banyans"on the quarterdeck. The party on boardthe Margaree proved to be a smashingsuccess, not soon to be forgotten. Earlythe next morning, all ships weighed an­chor and set course for Mazatlan,Mexico. It was evident that the shipswere finally in Mexican waters as thetemperature rose to 74°F; the tropicalsea also took on its characteristicsmooth, rolling, glassy appearance.

The visit to Mazatlan, commencingApril 22, began with Captain Hayesmaking his official calls on the Mayor,the Canadian Ambassador, the BritishVice-Consul, the Naval Zone Com­mander and the Governor of the Stateof Sinaloa. He was accompanied byCdr. J. L. Panabaker, commapding offi­cer of the Margaree, Cdr. R. H. Leir,captain of the Skeena, and Cdr. H. R.Tilley, in command of the Saguenay.

Mazatlan is on the mainland coastof Mexico, opposite the tip of LowerCalifornia. Of two main industries,cotton-browing and shrimp-fishing, thelatter is probably the more important,some 20,000 tons of shrimp being ex­ported annually to the United Statesalone., Of late Mazatlan, has come to be'known as a fine tourist resort area, be­ing advertised as the "Pearl of thePacific". Among the most fascinatingattractions to the visitor are the sweep­ing, white sand beaches, which stretchfor miles along the coast. The water iswarm and- sections of calm beach canbe found by those who like to swim,or pounding waves by those who liketo romp in the salty surf.

Recreational facilities for the spots­man are almost unlimited. Local watersabound with such game fish as marlin,sailfish and tarpon. Fishing expep,itionsundertaken by several sailors were re­warded with catches of sailfish or mar­lin. The name Mazatlan is derived fromtwo Indian words meaning "the placeof the deer", indicating the plentifulsupply of wild game in the nearby area.

From the moment the ships arrived,sailors were greeted. by the colourful

local merchants whose wares variedfrom bright-hued serapes to intri­cately tooled leather purses. The latterwere very popular items. Mexicans area highly musical and entertainingpeople and singing or playing can beheard any time of the day or night.Mazatlan residents are also primarily anight-life people, midday under theblazing sun being far too hot for muchactivity. Fine Spanish guitars providegay high-spirited entertainment in thenight clubs and cabanas.

The squadrop was challenged to abasketball tournament by the cadets ofthe Mexican Naval Training School.Although it was a close battle, thephysical training program of the navalcadets proved its worth and they cameout, happily, the victors. On Saturday,April 27, the Mackenzie, under the com­mand of Cdr. A. B. German arrived tojoin the squadron in Mazatlan, afterher journey from Halifax through thePanama Canal. While still in the At­lantic, she passed and hailed a sistership, the Saskatchewan, which she hasreplaced on the West Coast.

On Sunday morning before departure,the local populace observed the ships atceremonial divisions and church inwhites. Ship's company photographswere taken on respective forecastles. Atnoon, the squadron sailed for Esquimalt,arriving on May 5.

At the entrance to Esquimalt Harbour,Rear-Admiral W. M. Landymore, FlagOfficer Pacific Coast, boarded the M ac­kenzie and sailed with her into harbourto welcome her to the Pacific Fleet.

Home from the Sea

Setting aside for the time being their own requirements for new quarters, members of theSault Ste. Marie Naval Veterans' Association built and presented to local sea cadets a mllch·neededboathouse. This was the flag-raising ceremony at the dedication of the new structure.

A fine example of the comradeshipthat exists between men of the sea hasbeen seen in the Sault this week by thepresentation at Clergue Park of a boat­house. The .presentation was made bymembers of the Naval Veterans' Asso­ciation in the Sault to local units of theSea Cadet Corps and the Navy League.

The spacious building- 26 by 40 feet---.,.with a ramp leading down to thewater, will be invaluable to the youngsailors. Until now they have had tostruggle nearly 100 yards across thehighway and the park, carrying theirheavy boats from their headquarters tothe water.

This has tended to put a blight on theboating activities of the boys. Many ofthem are only small and can't be ex­pected to help lift a navy longboat. Theonly snag this year is that the riverlevel is extremely low and water barelylaps to the bottom of the ramp.

The Naval Veterans, who badly needa new building for themselves, decid!,!dtwo years ago to put aside their ownprojects for the sake of the boys. Sincethen a "hard core" of about 18 membersof the Naval Veterans have given uptheir spare time to building the boat­house. The Veterans' Association hasraised over $2,000, by competitions, formaterials.

They had help from local companiesfor some of the materials. The ParksBoard leased them the 100 by 100-footsite at a nominal fee. A lot of lumbercame from the temporary office build­ing at Mannesmann Tube Company'splant when it was pulled down for anew building.

The veteran seamen toiled for longhours last summer, transporting thetimber and putting it into the boathouse.It was common for them to start rightin with the building after work, as soonas they'd finished their supper. "Someof the wives got a bit fed up with it,"said one member.

A lot of concreting had to be done tothe floor of the boathouse and the sur­rounding area and that cost the mostmoney. Roofing had to be bought. Themetal flag pole was donated, though oneof the veterans did the welding on it.

When he attended the dedicationceremony and key presentation Sunday,Captain Eric P. Earnshaw of Ottawasaid, "It is an excellent thing that theolder generation of sailors has been ableto do something ~s valuable as this forthe younger men."

Though their sea-going days are overfor most members, the Naval Veteranswill no doubt get renewed pleasure outof seeing the cadets learning aboutboat:>. And the present location of theboathouse will enable members of' thepublic to watch the activities as well.

The Naval Veterans' aim now is toincrease their membership. They have70 paid-up members though they be­lieve there is a potential membershipin the Sault of 600. For servicemen thisis a worthwhile organization that com­bines social activities with service. Thisboathouse will serve as a monument totheir work.

The End of HMS SeraphT HE LAST of. the British "8" class

submarines, HMS Seraph, paid. offfor the last time on November 7, 1962,at HM8 Dolphi~. The final triumph ofher long and distinguished life wasachieved when she reached her "major­ity" on the preceding October 25. Thiswas the 21st anniversary of her launch...ing at Vickers Armstrong, Barrow-in­Furness, on, October 25, 1941. At thetime of this birthday she was the oldestsubmarine in commission in the RoyalNavy.

The Seraph was one of a line of manymodified and improved "8" boats builtsince the first was designed and orderedin 1929, She belonged to a class ofsubmarine that was to fight with dis­tinction in every theatre of the SecondWorld War, and to provide useful ser...vice for the Royal Navy until November1962.

Of medium size, the "S" class wasoriginally designed for use in the NorthSea and the Mediterranean. The boatswere simple in design and reliable. Thefact that in the Seraph's final year therewere no major defects, testifies to thequality of workmanship that went intoher building.

HMS Seraph is of interest to Cana­dians for three reasons. Two of theseconcern the Second World War and thethird, the recent part of that post-warperiod.

Firstly, she was the submarine, thenknown as P.219, under the commandof Lt. N. L. A. Jewell, RN (now CaptainJewell, MBE, DSC, RN), that landedGeneral Mark Clark and his party, con­sisting of GeneralL. Lemnitzer (nowSupreme Allied Commander, Europe)~nd two colonels, in North Africa in anattempt to obtain French co-operationfor the fo'rthcoming operation "Torch".

The Americans had believed that theirfriendship with France since 1940 gavethem a political advantage over theBritish, and that when they arrived inNorth Africa they would be hailed asliberators. To help theln to achieve this,they thought that by obtaining the helpof General Giraud, then the hero of aspectacular escape from a Germanprison and by getting him out of VichyFrance to join their troops in Africa,they would have someone around whomall loyal Frenchmen would rally. TheBritish, on the other hand, knew theywere not too popular with the Frenchat that time, and so were agreeable tosending an American. The Americanscould not use one of their large ocean­going submarines in the Mediterranean.As a result, the Seraph sailed with twocaptains for the operation, the actualcaptain, Lt. Jewell, RN, and the "poli­tical" captain, Captain J erauld Wright,USN (now Admiral Jerauld Wright,USN (Ret). Their task was successful. Alight-hearted reminder of his episodewas displayed in the Seraph for the restof her life, This was abras.s plate overthe door of the wardroom heads stating"General Mark Clark Sat Here".

The second part of this operation con­sisted of the Seraph. arriving 20 mileseast' of Toulon to take off General Gi­raudand his party, consisting of hisson, his aide-de-camp and a staff officer,Major Beauffre. This was scheduled forNovember 6, 1942. On November 7another submarine, HMS Sibyl, Lt. E.J. D. Turner, RN (now Captain Turner,RN), Captain SIM, First SubmarineSquadron, at HMS Dolphin) arrived tocollect the remainder of the party,which included Madame Beauffre andofficers of General Giraud's staff. TheSeraph had been delayed somewhat and

it turned out that the Sibyl went in asthe Seraph came out. In fact they heardeach other on their sonar, Had theybeen at the same depth it might havebeen a different story.

As we all know, the operation wassuccessful, although the taking of aFrench general who later demanded thesupreme command of all Allied forcesin Africa and an irnmediate invasion ofFrance as the price of his co-operation,made things complicated. In fact, thesubsequent negotiations were carriedout with Admiral Darlan. The operationis described in the book The Ship withTwo Ca.ptains.

Secondly, the Seraph was the sub-·marine, again under the command of Lt.Jewell, that launched the body of,"Major Martin", or the "Man WhoNever Was", under the codename"Operation Mincemeat". The idea arosefrom an incident', just prior to theNorth African landings, when a Catalinaflying boat crashed off the coast ofSpain and the bodies of the passengerswere washed ashore at Cadiz. One ofthe passengers, a naval officer, wascarrying a letter disclosing the fact thatoperations in North Africa were aboutto take place'~"Fortunately the letter wasrecovered before the German "agentsin Spain could get their' hands on it,but the idea stayed, and under thedirection of the Hon. Ewan Montague,operation "Mincemeat" was developed.

The body of "Major Martin" waswashed ashore on the coast of Spain asplanned. Attached to his wrist was abriefcase containing false informationabout the forthcoming invasion ofFrance. This information was directedat the Germans in Spain and they swal­lowed the bait. It has been stated thatthis led to the Germans withdrawing

some of their infantry and armour fromthe invasion areas thus saving manyAllied lives. This story is told by EwanMontague in his book The Man WhoNever Was. To this day the identity of"Major Martin" is known only to afew people who were closely connectedwith the operation, in spite of effortsby some members of the press to obtainit for publication.

After these "cloak and dagger" op­erations had taken place, the Seraphfound herself with an overstrained hull,due to an unplanned encounter with the.sea bottom in more than 500 feet ofwater. Thus she was among the first"S" class submarines to be withdrawnfrom operations and in 1944 was con­verted to a fast AjS target, or "Slip­pery (S) Boat", as they later becameknown. Her bridge was streamlined andthe torpedo tubes and attack periscoperemoved. Later she had 46 tons of steelpadding added to convert her to a tor­pedo target submarine, the' role sheplayed until .the end of her life. Herlast year in commission was spent bothin this role, working for the RoyalNavy and .Royal Air Force, and occa­sionally acting as a trials submarine forthe development of new torpedoes. Thiswork took her to Plymouth, Portland,Londonderry and Lochs Long and Fynein the Clyde areas.

Perhaps the most disappointing inci­dent of the year came on a Tuesdayafternoon in the Plymouth areas imme­diately before a planned oper~tional

visit to Bristol. She was acting as atarget for HMS Alaric, when on the lastrun of the day the Alaric hit her witha salvo of two Mk. 20 torpedoes. Thiswiped off one propeller and damagedthe blades of the second and resultedin her being towed ignominiously intoDevonport and spending a long weekendin a drydock instead of at Bristol. TheAlaric bought many a drink to pay forher good aim on that afternoon.

The Seraph's 21st birthday was cele­brated by a mess dinner in HMS Dol­phin on October 25, and it was attendedby as many of those who were con­nected with the submarine during herlifetime as could spare the time..Among the VIPs were the Hon. EwanMontague, QC, and Colonel Giraud, thegeneral's second son, who had comefrom Paris for the occa"ion. Unfor­tunately, General Mark Clark and Ad­miral Jeraud Wright could not attend,and General Lemnitzer had been ex­pt:Cted but his duties with NATO inter­vened. The hosts for the dinner wereSeraph's first captain, Captain Jewell,RN, and her last captain, Lt. H. N. M.Thompson, RN.

Finally, having been commandedsimultaneously by two captains, oneBritish and the other American, theSeraph in her last years saw the addi­tion of Canadian officers and men toher crew. When she paid off there werefive Canadians serving in her. The RCNofficers who had served in her are Lt.M. H. Tremblay, Lt. J. B. Elson andLt. E. R. A. Cullwick.

The Seraph's last few days in com­mission were spent taking trainingclasses to sea for day trips. Theseclasses contained Indian and Pakistaniofficers and men and so, right up to theend, she continued her multi-nationalrole in the Navy.

The Seraph is now sitting in the"Knackers Yard" at Petrol Pier, HMSDolphin, awaiting her final disposal,which will probably be for razor blades.There was a move afoot to present her

to the U.S. as a monument to Anglo­American co-operation in the last war.She was to have been embedded in con­crete on the campus of the MilitaryCollege of South Carolina, at Charles­ton, S.C., under the sponsorship of thepresident of the college, General MarkClark. Those of us who finished thecommission in her had hoped that wemight steam her across and take partin the celebration. This fell through,for various reasons, but the planes andhelm wheels, the bell and the completefore-hatch are being removed and sentinstead.

The Seraph had now been replacedby HMS Otter, one of the new Oberonclass boats modified to act as a targetsubmarine. There is no place for an"oldie" like the Seraph in today's sub­marine fleet, but she has certainlyearned her place in Doluhin's Hall ofFame.-E.R.A.C.

The Princess Helene, after 33 years of fair and foul weather on the 8ay of Fundy, said good-bye April 27, a fine, brisk spring day, to Digbyresidents and the nearby base of HMCS Cornwallis. A salute from the Navy was fired from a 12-pounder by new entries of Gatineau division withPO Donald 8edard in charge. Two days later .the Princess of Acadia (ex-Princess of Nanaimo) steamed into Digby at the start of a new career. Onhand was the Cornwallis band to help in the festivities, while on board were new entries arriving to form the main body of the Margaree Di­vision. (08-17851; 08-17853)

THE IMPRACTICAL K-BOATSA NY INVENTOR who tried to per­

suade the Admiralty to build asubmersible steamship, complete withtwo folding funnels, boiler room, airintakes, and other steamboat accoutre­ments would doubtless be firmly re­:noved from Their Lordships' presence.In normal times, that is.

But the autumn of 1914 was far fromnormal. Five of the proudest ships ofBritain's "sure shield" lay at the bottomof the North Sea, sunk by unseen U­boats. The remainder of the fleet wasordered to remain in harbour until somesolution to the problem could be found.All too late the Royal Navy realized thatonly 17 submarines of its neglected forceof 64 boats could be safely employedoutside coastal waters.

Unable to recognize the real signifi­cance of submarines back in thoseyears, despite the German navy's ex­cellent demonstrations at every harbourmouth, the British decided they mustbuild a class of submarine fast enoughto manoeuvre with the fleet in tightlystationed flotillas. The top speed avail­able from diesels was 21 knots. So theAdmiralty decided to hold out forsteam-driven submarines capable of 24knots or more on the surface.

And so the "K" class was born.Designed by D'Eyncourt in 1913, andbuilt by Vickers at $1,500,000 each, theK-boats were 338 feet long, displaced1,700 tons, and had a 3,00D-mile cruisingrange, mostly on the surface.

Their armament included four 21-inchtorpedo tubes in the bows, four similartubes trained on either beam, and two4-inch deck guns.

The K-boats were the biggest, fastestand most powerful submarines to be

launched until the first American nu­clear submarines left the ways 40 yearslater. Few destroyers of the First WorldWar could match their length or ton­nage.

But they were one of Britain's cost­liest shipbuilding failures. Their divingplanes, contrOl1 surfaces, valves andballast pumps could not control theungainly size of the K-boat at its lowsubmerged speeds. The hull wasweakened by too many openings. Of the17 K-class submarines launched be­tween August 1916 and May 1918, 16

were involved in major accidents. Onesank during trials. Three were lost incollisions. A fifth disappeared at sea.Another sank in harbour. Nearly allstruck bottom at regular intervals inthe shallow North. Sea.

"K for calamity," said the desperateofficers and men who manned them,and called themselves the "SuicideClub". One of the legends of theirdoomed flotilla is a conversation allegedto have taken place between a captainand his first lieutenant: "I say, NumberOne, my end is diving. What the hell isyour end doing?"

The most disastrous chapter in theK-boat story was probably "The Battleof May Island" on January 31, 1918,

when nine K-class submarines steamedout of the Firth of Forth in line-aheadwith 10 battleships iind cruisers aheadand astern.

Modern submariners hate surfaceconsorts, even with radar to help out.But the K-boats of 1928 steameddarkened at 20 knots with only twocables of water between themselves andthe cruisers and battleships astern. Andon this particular night the steering gearjammed on K-14. Within a few minutesthree submarines were sunk and fourmore damaged.

"It looks as if there was somethingwrong with the standard of efficiencyof the officers," commented the FirstLord of the Admiralty in a memo­randum to the First Sea Lord a fewdays later. Their Lordships neverquestioned the K-boilt's qualities, orthe planning that produced such nightrehearsals for classical fleet manoeuvres.

Even after the '1918 Armistice, theRoyal Navy continued to commission­and lose-more K-class submarines. Thelast three were renamed "M" class andequipped with 12-inch guns as sub­~ersible monitors. M-l was lost with69 officers and men on November 12,1925, off the Devon coast, probably afterbeing rammed by a Swedish freighter.

M-2 was fitted with a seaplane hangar.She vanished January 26, 1932, with60 men on board, off Portland. Herwreck was found, with the hangar doorpartly open.

M-3 was converted for minelaying,but was scrapped by the Admiralty in1933, just 20 years after the first draw­ing of the type had been seen by theAdmiralty.

Through endless exhausting exercisesthe two craft come into frequent con­flict, but are prevented from takingany hostile action by the rules of peace­time protocol on the high seas. Theclimax occurs when the American cap­tain finally traps the Russian insideDanish territorial limits on the Green­land coast. He signals for approval to"challenge and interdict" the trespasserwhile remaining in contact. NATO head­quarters consents, and the Americansprepare to attack.

At this moment the U.S. Naval head­quarters orders the Bedford to do noth­ing that might aggravate another Berlincrisis. So for days and nights withoutsleep the American ship merely tracksthe submarine, and finally-you guessedit-loses contact.

Instantly, of course, comes a messagefrom CNO allowing the destroyer tomake an attack if the Russian fails to

surface and identify himself. Hourslater, with the destroyer-men halfstunned with exhaustion, they detectthe Russian once again, blowing tanksto reach the surface in a last desperatebid for safety.

What happens next forms The Bed­ford Incident: a timely warning, per­haps, for those who are tempted to drivesailors and ships too hard and too longunder the illu~i.on that this protects theworld from war.

The Bedford Incident is exciting read­ing for landsmen and seamen alike.But it will ,be specially rewarding forRCN personnel who are all too familiarwith the hardships and problems of theanti-submarine task. Mr. Rascovichwrites with a sure, professional knowl­edge of his subject.

The Bedford Incident is a "must" forevery ship's library, and will help manya flagging submarine hunter to see hisduties in a "glamourized" light.-K.E.G.

Trade GroupNot Bar ToPromotion

M EN WHO ARE qualified for pro­motion in all respects other than

being advanced in trade group will nowfind it possible to enter the promotionzone and compete for promotion, it wasannounced by Naval Headquarters ina general message (CANGEN 82) onMay 1.

The earliest dates men affected bythis change may enter the promotionzone are, for chief petty officers, secondclass, and petty officers, first and secondclass, June 1, 1963, for leading and ableseamen, September 1, 1963.

The dates coincide with the date ofthe first promotion competition for theranks concerned after the change. Menentering the promotion zone under theseconditions will be considered in theseand subsequent promotion competitions.

The above initial dates were selectedto eliminate the reviewing of past pro­motion competitions for men who wouldhave entered the promotion zone atearlier dates if no time limit wereimposed. It must be appreciated that thenumber of men appearing on any pro­motion list is limited by strict rankceilings and promotions are jalwaysmade to the maximum allowable undercurrent ceilings.

It is possible that a review of pastlists would show that some men nowbeing entered into the promotion zoneunder these conditions were eligible forpromotion at an earlier date. The onlyway in which a promotion could bemade in these circumstances would beby withdrawing a promotion already ineffect or promoting above the author­ized ceiling. Either action would createproblems.

After the initial dates given above arepast, the date of entry into the zoneshall be the actual date that a manmeets all requirements for promotionexcept that he has not been advancedin trade group.

All men entering the promotion zoneunder the condition that they are fullyqualified with the above exception, willcompete an an equal basis with menalready in the zone even though theymay have a lower trade group thanthese men.

When the new trade structure was in­troduced on January 1, 1960, the traderequirements became Trade Group IV

for chief petty officer, first and secondclass, and petty officer, first class; TradeGroup III, for petty officer second class;Trade Group II for leading seaman, andTrade Group I for able seaman. Allbranches, except the electrical and or­dnance branches, varied in their re­quirement before this new trade groupstandard was set.

This and the fact that men fullyqualified for promotion under thebranch concept were entitled to enterthe promotion zone on introduction ofthe new promotion system, in somecases with a lower trade group thanthat now required, explains why thereare some men already in the' promotionzone holding the lower trade group anqnot qualified in the higher trade group.

When men who have entered the pro­motion zone without being advanced intrade group are promoted before being

advanced to the higher trade group theywill receive preference on the advance­ment rosters.

When a man is promoted he will beplaced at the top of the advancementroster for his'trade and trade group butafter any other men who have alreadybeen promoted under similar circum­stances and who have not yet been ad­vanced.

Men who will now compete for pro­motion but have not been advanced intrade group will be treated as if theyhad entered the promotion zone in thenormal way. They will be awardedpoints for "time in zone" from theirinitial date of entry into the promotionzone to the maximum of 40 points andwill not be affected by the introductionof any new qualifications for promotionwhile they remain in the promotionzone.

Letters to the Editor

THE FUNCTIONS OF HOCHELAGASir:

In the article entitled, "The FleetSchool" (April 1963, The Crowsnest),there appears the following sentence... "Hochelaga, despite its importance,can be dismissed here-this is wherethe non-technical people are' trained,cooks, stewards and others on the sup­ply side".

This sentence tends to give the im­pression that the writer of the articlehas only a rudimentary knowledge ofHochelaga activities, or made an un­fortunate choice of words. I believethat the latter was the case.

However, to avoid any misunder­standing which may arise from the­quotation I should like to clarifyHochelaga's position.

First, in a discussion of Fleet Schools,1 suggest that Hoche'laga cannot be dis­missed. The School is not "The SupplySchool", although it certainly startedout that way and we on the staff areproud of it. However we are equallyproud of. being, in every sense of theword, a Fleet School and an integralpart of the "Fleet School concept".

Second, there is some doubt that the"supply" people trained· in Hochelagaare non-technical. Hochelaga doesn'tthink so, and' Treasury Board whenauthorizing trades pay doesn't think soeither. It cannot be denied that materielmanagement is an increasingly technicalfield and certainly more scientific thanthe traditional manual trades. Cookeryis also technical, although the applIca­tion and development of artistic flairis an essential part of that trade.

Third, Hochelaga is not just the place". . . where the non-tecJ;1nical peopleare trained, cooks, stewards and otherson the supply side".

There are four training divisions here,but only, two deal with supply.

All "in-service" management trainingfor theRCN is conducted in Hochelaga.Courses are given to commanders andto equivalent ranks in the Air Force,Army and Civil Service, and similarlyto lieutenant-commanders, and commis­sioned officers and chief petty officers.There are also plans under way tobroaden this coverage. This subject is

not technical, but neither can it bepainted white and called supply.

The remaining division speaks theEnglish language and gives basic train­ing to French-speaking recruits. True,this is non-technical-also-it is non­supply. However it is integrated withthe new entry training in Cornwallis.

While we are on the subject of theApril 196:3 issue, may I also draw toyour attention the article on page 13titled "Management Engineering"? Themanagement training performed inHMCS Hochetaga Fleet School hasnothip,g to do with Management Engin­eering and we are not engaged intraining in that field. I hate to berepetitive but the caption under thephotograph 'refers to the " . . . RCN'sNaval Supply School". We all knownow that there isn't one, don't we?

The "Hawsing Iron", (in some placescalled housing, horsing or beetlingiron), was little more than a double­grooved caulking iron with a handle,the purpose of which was to drive hardthe "making up", (made-up threads ofoakum in the seam prior to beingpitched) .

The design of such a badge to., rep­resent the craft no doubt stemmed fromthe most common sight in ship mainten­ance in those days, when the ship wasbeached for scraping and pitching, acrew of caulkers may have been seen"drumming" areas of the underwater

hull to beat the tide under the directionof the ship's carpenter. "Drumming"was a term meaning to harden up thethreads which had worked loose be­tween maintenance periods and did notrequire re-caulking,.

The description, "Beadle and HawsingIron has been passed on and acceptedgenerally here on the West Coast bynaval shipwrights since approximately1901 and, as well. is accepted in theUnited Kingdom.
