It was a busy 2019 on the HSBC BWF World Tour but what did the players do away from the court?

Up & About

Star Creation Programme

Under BWF’s above initiative, five shuttlers have been receiving regular coaching from sports digital agency Seven League to hone their social media skills. The chosen ones for the pilot programme are doubles specialists Sapsiree Taerattanachai (THA) and Ashwini Ponnappa (IND), women’s singles stars Mia Blichfeldt (DEN) and Beiwen Zhang (USA), and Danish men’s doubles ace Kim Astrup.

#coffeecupchallenge

In October, Mia Blichfeldt posted this clip on her Instagram. She dared fellow pros to emulate her artistry; it caught fire and thousands of videos from players and fans alike lit up the digital space.

Mission Kim Possible

Danish doubles star Kim Astrup loves Planet Earth and is keen to rid it of pollution. Astrup and fellow-Dane Hans-Kristian Vittinghus took it upon themselves to spread awareness on reducing plastic usage. BWF cameras were there to capture their campaign.

Beyond the CourtDuring the Yonex French Open, we took Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong to the Eiffel Tower for our first World Tour Trophy photoshoot. We plan to continue the Trophy Tour at six others events in 2020. At the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals, there was a Dim Sum session involving Anders Antonsen, Chan Peng Soon, Goh Liu Ying, Wang Yi Lyu and Huang Dong Ping.

Ahead of the Gala Dinner, our female players were treated to a make-up session and they wowed fans as they walked the red carpet. With players leaving their on-court attire behind in favour of suits and dresses, there was a starry air around the event. Viktor Axelsen and Ratchanok Intanon claimed the ‘Best Dressed’ awards.

China’s mixed doubles stars Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong made the most of their visit to the Eiffel Tower.

Regulation Updates

Players may note that the ceremony protocol under Player Commitment Regulations (1.10) states that flags are not allowed on the podium at Major Events individual and World Tour tournaments. However, flags are allowed on podium at Major Events team tournaments.

Players may also read up on their media obligations and sponsor or commercial obligations – appearance at mixed zone is compulsory. So are hospitality visits, autograph sessions, or similar activities (maximum of two per tournament, each between 30 to 60 minutes).

Should a player be entered in more than one event at a tournament, by retiring or withdrawing from that one event, the player must be withdrawn from all other events in which he or she is entered. This GCR Regulation 14.1.4 also applies for team tournaments, where retiring or withdrawing in a tie means that the player shall be withdrawn from all subsequent matches in that tie and cannot be substituted.

Flags on Podium

Changes to the Laws of Badminton can only be made at the BWF Annual General Meeting currently held each May. However, regulation changes can be approved by Council at any time throughout the year, usually in line with the three BWF Council Meetings that take place. You can expect most major regulation changes to occur at the end of the year following the final Council Meeting.

Do You Know?

There are a number of changes to the Junior Tournament Regulations to provide greater clarity on these issues and to align with the General Competition Regulations (GCR). These relate to:

Withdrawal (6.6.1) Colour of Players’ Clothing (13.4)

Advertising on Players’ and Coaches’ Clothing (16.2 – 16.6)

Restriction on advertising of electronic cigarettes (16.5)

You probably have seen him rushing around at tournaments with an anxious look. But don’t be fooled by Selvam Supramaniam’s stern exterior – he’s actually a fun guy to be with.

Selvam is Senior Tournament Series Manager at BWF. His main role is to manage and coordinate the implementation and delivery of all commercial and media broadcast rights as well as provide technical support to the hosts and referees on the HSBC BWF World Tour. Selvam has worn many hats – having worked as warden at a sports school for Malaysian junior badminton players and later as a journalist, he joined BWF as media officer over a decade ago before shifting to the Events department.

Selvam has a black belt in taekwondo and completed a law degree while working at BWF. You probably can’t win an argument with him!
