Family and friends gathered in August to surprise Judy Zeban (LaPaloma) with a “Very Happy and Many More!” Birthday Party ~

to celebrate Judy's 80th!

Being the huuuge Dallas Cowboys fan for years, she was thrilled to receive a Cowboys jersey, given to her by husband, Pete, with her name and the number “80” displayed on the back of the jer-sey. She will surely wear the jersey with pride!

And, a birthday present surprise ~ a cruise on the Oasis of the Seas!

Birthday surprises never get old and neither does Judy Zeban! Happy Birthday, Judy!

Farewell A final goodbye to dear neighbor friends. Residents since 1992, Dot & Al Eastlack (Ventana) both passed away this summer. Dot passed away the first week in July. She had surgery for tongue cancer which was found to be more widespread than originally thought. She was in hospice for about 3 weeks in Pennsylvania with daughters by her side. Al passed 44 days later at Palm Gardens nursing center, suf-fering from the affects of Altzheimer’s disease. Al had served as our Community Security Committee Chairman for 18 years, ending his chairmanship in 2013. He was instrumental in bringing our security patrol services to our community: Bay to Bay Security and then St. Moritz Patrol, our current service. Nikki Redding, a resident of (Ventana) for 15 years, passed this summer from the ravages of cancer. Nikki was a mental health counselor in Brandon and had served on the Landscape Committee for the last 5 years. Hans Severin (Ventana) passed away in September after a courageous battle with complications from leukemia. He is survived by wife, Brigitte, and family. And, in May of this year, Barbara Monahan (LaPaloma) passed away, surrounded by family and friends, in Michigan after a courageous battle with cancer. She was a longtime local realtor. She touched many lives in our community. Our sincere condolences to husband, Ray, and family.

May our dear neighbor friends rest in His Love and Eternal Peace

Traffic Study Update Carol Tedder (Fairway Palms) wanted to share another update regarding a Traffic Study for our area. Thank you, Carol!! A consulting firm had been contracted with Hillsborough County to begin the South County Traffic Study this au-tumn. Public hearings will be advertised asking for area residents’ input. I received an email from the Hillsborough County project manager stating that the following specific recommendations for The Villages at Cypress Creek have been submitted to the firm: a. Two, three-way stop signs: The first at the entrance to Ventana Village (Ventana Drive and Cypress Village Boule-vard). The second at the entrance to Fairway Palms Village (Golf Breeze Way and Cypress Village Boulevard).

b. Three marked pedestrian crossings to cross Cypress Village Boulevard: at Upper Creek Drive, Golf Breeze Way (Fairway Palms) and Ventana Drive (Ventana Village).

c. Designate LaPaloma and Ventana Villages as “golf cart communities”. Both have a single entrance and are di-rectly on the County's golf cart path.

d. Paint the asphalt on Cypress Village Boulevard with the 35 MPH speed limit. The boundaries for the South County Traffic Study are Cypress Village Boulevard north to 19th Avenue NE; 19th Ave-nue NE east to US 301; US 301 south to SR674; SR674 west to Cypress Village Boulevard. The Study will take 6 months. Will keep you updated! ~ Carol Tedder (Fairway Palms)

Deputy Resource Deputy Jeff Merry reminds us that the ‘bad guys’ are out there, just be careful. They will walk through a parking lot trying all the car doors and, when they find one unlocked, they just get in as though they owned the vehi-cle. And, in a minute, they can grab anything and even go through the glove compartment, and then move on to the next vehicle. Unlocked cars parked in a home driveway at night or even inside an open garage are also targets.

The holiday season will be upon us before we know it ~ thefts and burglaries increase during this time as we are more hurried, harried and distracted. Here are simple tips as a reminder from Deputy Resource Deputy Jeff Merry and our Committee for safe holiday shopping:

>>> As purse snatchings are most common this time of year, try to go without a purse at all. Keep wallet contents in a zipped or buttoned pocket. If you must carry a purse, use one that can be strapped tightly and worn on the front.

>>> Stay aware while leaving your locked car and returning. Thieves may follow you, looking for an opportunity to strike. If possible, shop with a buddy. If you must shop alone, especially at night, and you feel uneasy about walking to your car, request that a store employee escort you to your vehicle (Beall’s Department Store has been offering this ser-vice for years).

>>> If at all possible, do not make multiple trips to the car with gifts/packages. Thieves will often follow a shopper out, wait for them to go back into the store and then break into the car to steal the items. If you need to keep packages in the car, cover them up. Some thieves will break into vehicles for the packages which are visible from outside the car. When arriving back home, check your mirrors before exiting your vehicle, and look around as you are getting into your car to get your bags out. Too often we can be distracted by the phone or just lost in our thoughts during this time of year ~ makes us easy marks for the “bad guys”.

So, please follow these safety tips, just be aware of your surroundings. On behalf of our Community Resource Deputy Jeff Merry and the Security Committee Members, have a happy and safe holiday season with family and friends!

Save a Horse Thrift

769 Cortaro Drive 444.4064

www.saveahorsethrift.org

Save A Horse Thrift Shop (a great place to shop!) accepts charitable donations to assist horse owners in need:

Clothing, collectables, jewelry, electronics and some household items accepted

Cash donations accepted

Donations accepted daily during business hours (9am to 3pm)

Save a Horse Thrift is a Florida Social Purpose Corporation formed in 2016. We are the owners of three rescue horses, Sunny, Ginger and Yogi, and strongly believe that every horse in need deserves to be rescued. Our goal is to assist horse owners who have endured hardships such as illnesses or financial difficulties that would otherwise keep them from giving their horses proper nutrition and care. It is im-portant to us that we help keep horses with their families so that despite the hard-ships they face, they still have a sense of stability.

Each month we evaluate the needs of horse owners and distribute funds to each re-cipient's local feed store to assist with feed and hay costs. Save A Horse Thrift will also evaluate the physical needs of these horses and cover those necessary costs with our veterinarian and farrier. ~ Sandy (Save a Horse Thrift)

Fairly new to our community, Good Samaritan Mission, indeed, is on a mission! William Cruz, Jr., Executive Direc-tor, is on a crusade to break the cycle of poverty one person at a time. He sees destitution as a symptom of deeper issues that can be solved through education. What a concept! Along the lines of ~ “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Bill is a member of Hillsborough County’s first family of charity, although “charity” is a word he never uses when de-scribing his work. His parents, Pastor William and Dora Cruz, founded the Good Samaritan, Beth-El and Lord’s Light-house missions, and Bill, Jr. has been helping out since they started the Mission 30 years ago. A licensed, family and marriage therapist, with a degree from the University of South Florida, Bill also is an ordained minister and might have seemed the logical choice to take over when his parents, both in their late 70s at the time, decid-ed to retire from Good Samaritan in 2008. It was a logical choice to take over, but Bill had a different vision for Good Samaritan going forward. That new vision started with an analysis of the community the Mission served. Using national, state and county databases, Bill’s study found a population struggling with domestic violence, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy and gang violence. He be-lieves in getting to the core issues of what these people are going through and effectively help them to better their lives and address those issues. As a result, Good Samaritan began offering short classes for anyone who wanted to use the food bank. Classes run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. every Tuesday, and students earn a token for each class they attend. Each token, in turn, earns stu-dents an empty bag that they can use at their food bank. Set up to resemble a small grocery store, the Mission lets clients or students stroll the aisles to select the food they need. The more classes a student takes, the more tokens they earn and the more bags they can fill. For a listing of classes, visit www.gsmission.org. “Sometimes people save the tokens for another day when they really need the food, but we also have people who don’t need the food but just come for the classes and give their tokens to others who need it,” says Bill. The food bank is also open to those who don’t want to take the classes. They are, however, required to spend some time volunteering at the Mission before they can use the food bank. A typical week now sees 40 to 50 students taking the classes and then transitioning to teaching the classes themselves! Says Bill, “It’s about ushering people away from a culture of entitlement and into a culture of sharing and giving back to the community.” Toxic Charity, a book by Robert Lupton that chronicled the shortcomings of traditional charity organi-zations, has been his inspiration. Good Samaritan’s approach has earned support from across the bay area, with several missions inviting him to share his philosophy in hopes of starting similar programs. With a $400,000 annual budget and only 2 full-time employees, Good Samaritan counts on grants from the Interfaith Council of Sun City Center, the Sun City Center Community Foundation and a number of local churches to keep the pantry’s shelves stocked. For more information on the Good Samaritan Mission, call 634.7136, email [email protected] or visit www.gsmission.org. Upcoming event at Good Samaritan ~ Denim and Lace Dinner being held on Saturday, November 3rd at SouthShore United Church of Christ. Tickets are $75 for 2, $100 for 4. If you are interested in becoming a fundraising sponsor, available at $1,000, $500 and $250 levels with numerous “perks”, please see contact information below!
