Operation Christmas Child

Ready students worked with Samaritan'sPurse to fill shoe boxes with small gifts andbasic necessities for children in age groups2-4, 5-9, and 10-14. The wrapped boxesare then sent to needy children around theworld. The mission is to demonstrateGod's love and message in a tangible wayto children in need. Various organizationsthroughout the school participate by fillingand wrapping shoe boxes. Craig Lewis has joined theBishop Ready community

as Band Director. A graduateof Ithaca College in New Yorkwith a Bachelor’s Degree inMusic Education, he holds aMaster’s Degree in MusicEducation from the Universityof Nevada, Las Vegas. Prior to joining BishopReady, Mr. Lewis taughtmusic in grades 5-12 and was

high school marching band director ofthe London City Schools, London, OH.

He is a member of the Music EducatorsNational Conference, the Ohio Music EducatorsAssociation, Pi Kappa Lambda, National HonoraryMusic Fraternity, and Kappa Gamma Psi,Performing Arts Fraternity. A native of Rochester,NY, Mr. Lewis is married and the father of two, ason and a daughter. His special interests includeperforming on trumpet, piano, and baritone. Ashley Riekofski is the new SchoolPsychologist, working with our Guidance

Office. Ms Riekofski holds aBachelor of Arts degree inPsychology from FredoniaState University in Fredonia,NY, and a Master’s ofScience Degree in SchoolPsychology from RobertsWesleyan College in Chili,NY. She is a member of theNational Association ofSchool Psychologists. A native of the Finger Lakesregion of upstate New York,Ashley enjoys music and going to local shows and art galleries and summer and falloutdoor activities, including hiking andbiking…and following the Bills and Sabres!

Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman visitedBishop Ready High School this fall upon thecity’s completion of new sidewalks in thearea surrounding the school. Many of thestreets either had no sidewalks or hadsidewalks in disrepair. ritual, Boy Scouts of America. Michael, whocompleted training this past summer and is nowable to work as a councilor at any Boy Scouts’camp, plans to attend the Order of the Arrowconvention in Michigan in July, 2012. Herecently was elected Lodge Chief, the highestlevel in Order of the Arrow.

The Freshman Class on retreat

The Martin De Porres Center on Ohio DominicanUniversity’s campus was the setting for this

year’s freshman retreat. “How to be a BRHSstudent” was the main topic and our seniors ledsmall groups and gave presentations, including“What I wish I had known as a freshman.” Thefreshmen learned the alma mater and school historyand heard from various school administrators, whodescribed their jobs and how they were poised tohelp all students through their four years at Ready.In addition, outside speakers addressed thefreshmen on service to the larger community andthe issue of bullying. Some retreat activitiesincluded tying fleece blankets for veterans andfocusing on the topic of hunger. Each studentreceived a Bible, which they will use throughouttheir years at Ready. As a community-buildingactivity, individual Bibles weresigned (as one woulda yearbook) by fellowstudents as a reminderto the reader of theirfellow classmates.The retreat leader wasSharon Curtin and theentire class of 114freshmen attended.

The sophomore retreat, which campus ministryleader and theology faculty member DeborahDelPrince described as “a day of reflection,awareness, learning, and service,” was centered onThe Bear Necessities Project.

The sophomore class collected approximately500 pounds of food, toiletries, personal gifts (hairties, jewelry, playing cards, puzzle books, etc.), andnew clothing items. Half of the class spent a daysorting the items and the other half of the classspent a second day bagging the items. ThroughMrs. DelPrince’s efforts, The Tim Horton’sFoundation donated 144 drawstring backpacks thatheld the collected items. In addition, throughoutthe year facility director Will George had collectedused clothing and school supply items that werealso included in the distribution. The students alsocollected money during lunch periods and raised$255, including a generous anonymous gift of$100. Angela Lariviere is the Director of the YouthEmpowerment Program and it was her leadershipthat inspired the retreat. Most items were deliveredto The Dowd Center, part of the Homeless FamiliesFoundation, and others were better suited to theFree Clothes Closet at Starr House, a teen drop-in

center for homelessyouth located near thecampus of OSU.

The retreats serve asa reminder that there islife beyond the “me-ness” and hustle andbustle of everydayliving. BR retreats focus

the mind and heart on the greater good, for theimmediate Ready community and for the greatercommunity of which each Ready student is a part.

He may be a Hartley alum, but WNBCweekend sportscaster/co-host of Football

Friday Night Matt Barnes got into the Ready spiritand identified with the Ready family spirit as theguest speaker at the annual Spirit Breakfast, heldon September 29.

The Columbus native is a graduate of OhioUniversity who admits that he wasn’t very goodat sports while a student, but it wasn’t for lack oftrying! He spoke from his experience inencouraging our students to get involved, not justin sports, but in any extra-curricular activities.Matt told how every time he “failed,” he went onto something else, something better. Heencouraged each student to become a well-rounded person, not just involved in sports, butinvolved in life. He related how participating inextra-curricular activities could actually lead tobetter grades and that a well-rounded person

knows how to respond to diversity and hasdeveloped leadership skills.

Matt summed up his advice to students inthree points: get involved; be proud of yourself,your school, your accomplishments; and neverforget where you came from—when yougraduate, be sure to come back and give back.

“You are a Silver Knight,” he said, “be thebest at whatever it is you set out to do. Do it foryourself, your family, and your school.”

Once again, a contingent of family, alums, andcoaches returned for this annual event. The band,under the direction of new band director Craig Lewis,jump-started the spirit rally and the cheerleaders did agreat job of getting the crowd involved.

Sister Nancy Miller offered an inspiringprayer: “All good and gracious God, in the nameof Jesus Your Son, as we celebrate Spirit Week,we thank You for sending Your Spirit among usand for the successes, the effort, goodsportsmanship, and support we have alreadyexperienced this school year. We pray that you

This year’s overall theme for Spirit Week wasReady Family Vacations. The seniors did StateFair (carnival, rides, fair foods, fun house, andentertainment); the juniors did the Smithsonian(Air & Space, National Monuments, pop culture,Natural History, and ancient civilizations); thesophomores (no direct correlation) did the zoo(arctic, aquarium, Africa, rainforest, andAustralia); and the freshmen did Disney World(Magic Kingdom, MGM, Epcot, TyphoonLagoon, and Imagineers). This year’s winners ofthe Spirit Stick: the seniors!

Ready Senior ExperiencesSummer@Brown

In this world of online classes and distancelearning, Ready senior Maria Martello chose to

experience college life the old-fashioned way, byspending a summer session at Brown University.

The prestigious Ivy League school offers aseven-week Summer@Brown program thatintroduces talented high school students fromaround the world to life as a student on an IvyLeague campus. Courses range fromanthropology to zoology with engineering, Latin,and economics among the various course topics.Maria chose two sessions, each meeting Mondaythrough Friday for a minimum of three hours perday, during her mid-summer stay at Brown:Introduction to Cultural Anthropology and GreatModern European Thinkers. Each course carriedtwo semester credits.

Maria learned about the program and decidedthat this was something that she really wanted todo…so, she set about applying both for theprogram and for a scholarship, since the cost wasseriously prohibitive without aid! She wasaccepted into the program in early May and, justweeks before the courses were to start, she learnedthat she had received a Dean’s Scholarship, whichcovered the $10,000 cost of the program. Heradvice to all: Don’t ever be deterred from whatyou want to do if you don’t have the money; finda way, work at it, and never give up!

In her Introduction to Anthropology course,Maria worked on a team project based on thestudy of the ethnicity of an object from everydaylife. Maria’s team chose to study mirrors andhow they affect one’s daily life. The teamdeveloped a web site as part of the project andlearned much about reflection, in all its variousmeanings.

Maria’s advice to anyone who is looking toexplore life beyond Ready while still a student atReady? “Find something you are reallypassionate about, whether it be sports, school, ordrama, and really look into programs that willhelp you refine your craft. Scholarships andgreat opportunities are out there but you have toseek them out!”

Update: Harrison RingelContinues to Race!

When last we checked in on sophomoreHarrison Ringel, he had just won the West

East Racing Association (WERA) Novice E-Super Stock and D-Super Stock NationalChampionships—when he was a freshman!

We’re pleased to report that Harrisoncontinues his love of racing and took first placeat the National Championship at Road Atlanta inthe E-Super Stock Class on a Ninja 250. Hecontinues to race competitively and earn HonorRoll status at BRHS while continuing his

treatment for leukemia.Next year, Harrison willrace on a Suzuki SV 650and Harrison will be racingchemo free, since his lasttreatment is scheduled forMarch 18, 2012!

Through hiscompetitiveness, histenacity, and his positiveattitude, Harrison continuesto inspire family and friends and be a buoyantexample of what a Ready student should be!

A Fond Farewell….

Over 100 people attended theRetirement Dinner for the

softball coaching staff, held at BRon October 23. Current students,former players/students,appreciative parents, and friendscame together to thank the threecoaches who, collectively, gave 75years of service to the schoolthrough coaching.

Nick Joseph, head coach, and Mike “Fuzz”Mercurio and Allen Stoffel, assistant coaches,gave guidance, direction, and encouragement to ahost of varsity softball players through the years.When Mr. Joseph decided to retire, the other twomen could not envision working with anyone elseso they joined him in retirement. These three

served together as a team and it was our privilegeto honor them together as a team. Mr. Josephcoached JV softball for eight years and varsitysoftball for 20 years; Mr. Stoffel coached JVsoftball for 15 years and varsity for five years;and Mr. Mercurio coached JV for four years andvarsity for 20 years.

The overall varsity softball record at Ready is420-159; during Mr. Joseph’s tenure, the recordwas 412-135. He started the Central District All-Metro team and his most memorable win was, ofcourse, the State Championship Game in 1995.

Mr. Mercurio is a Ready alum, Class of ’72,and is a member of the school’s Alumni/ae Hallof Fame. Mr. Joseph is the father of two Readyalums (Michelle ’84 and Nicole ’89) and thegrandfather of Samantha Curry ’11. Mr. Stoffelis a Ready alum, Class of ’66.

Their dedication to Ready and theiraccomplishments with the softball teams aresincerely appreciated and will be difficult toreplace!

Technology Competition Results

This year’s TechnologyCompetition for BR partner

schools was held on November 9in the school’s gym. The“situation to consider” was the

growing problem of how to keep shelvesstocked with healthy food for distribution tothose working poor and homeless who otherwisewould go hungry.

Each school sent two teams to the competition.Participants were:

Taking First, Second, and Third Place,respectively, were St. Mary Magdalene, St.Brendan, and Trinity.

Ready Wrestlers Go the Extra(Megan’s) Miles….

Chris Schlaegel, an assistant wrestling coachat Ready, knows tragedy first-hand. He also

knows dedication, loyalty, and the meaning offamily…all attributes that he instills in hiswrestling team members.

Chris and his family sponsor an annual four-mile run/walk and 1.5 mile walk in honor of hissister Megan who died in an auto accident onThanksgiving Day in 2007. Megan had beenworking as a research assistant at NationwideChildren’s Hospital at the time of the accident;Megan’s Miles raises funds and awareness forNationwide Children’s Muscular DystrophyResearch Institute. This year was the fourth yearfor the run, and over $60,000 has been collectedfor the Institute.

The Schlaegel Family has partnered with theColumbus Running Company Charity Fund inbringing this event to fruition. The Readywrestling team has also been instrumental in thesuccess of the event. As Mrs. Schlaegel,Megan’s mother, writes: “The Bishop Readywrestling family has been extremely supportiveof this cause. The wrestlers come early and helpwith the set-up and anything we need prior to therun. During the run, they are on the coursehelping the police with directing the runners andwalkers. Following the run, they stay and helpwith clean up. It would be nearly impossible tohave such a successful event without the help ofthe wrestlers and their families.”

Next year’s run will be at noon on Sunday,May 27, 2012, at Central Crossing High School.As we get closer to the event, we will postadditional information on our web site. If youare interested, you may participate as arunner/walker or volunteer your time andservices to help with publicity, set up and cleanup, and help the police on the course itself.

Megan loved to run and she lives on in theevent which honors her memory while helpingothers.

“He doesn’t stand a chance…”

The preconceived notionsof those deliberating a

trial, whether as jurors or asinterested observers, canweigh heavily on theoutcome. But it only takesone juror to force the issue:what do we really know?What really happened? Howcredible are the witnesses?Under the direction of Ready

faculty member Jill Larger, five seniors, fourjuniors, two sophomores, and two freshmenbrought a jury room to life on the stage of theLittle Theatre the weekend of November 17-20.

Twelve Angry Jurors is the reconfigured (fora mixed gender cast) version of the famousReginald Rose courtroom/jury room dramaTwelve Angry Men. The 1957 movie version,famously starring Henry Fonda as Juror #8, isperhaps the most well-known version of thedrama. It was originally presented as a televisedplay on CBS’s Studio One in 1954. By thefollowing year, it had been adapted for the stageand has played since then on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and in regional theaters. A 1990sShowtime presentation starred Jack Lemmonand George C. Scott.

Given today’s litigious society and the currentsocietal climate, the drama could not be more apt.

The excellent cast, more than capablyhandling these challenging roles, are:Seniors Stephanie Carrier (Juror #10), AnthonyHerrmann (Juror #8), Nicholas Ingram (Juror #9),

Kevin Montgomery (Juror #3), and KellySchwendeman (Juror #12); juniors Alyssa Baum(Juror #6), Elaina Ferko (Juror #4), NicholasMerchant (Foreman), and Grace Trudeau (Juror #2);sophomores Elizabeth Hayslip (Juror #5) andMichael Osborn (Juror #7); and freshmen Justine

Ferko (Juror #11) and Adam Hutton(Guard).

Boys Soccer Up-DateThe boys’ soccer team had key wins against

Wellington High School, Liberty Union, andcross-town rival West High School, with a bigscore of 4-1. Top goal scorer for the year wassenior Zachary Wiser with 15 goals for theseason. Goalie senior Matthew Feldkamppitched four shutouts and seniors Joshua Colleyand Zachary Wiser were recognized for theirefforts as 1st Team All CCL. Coach SamuelSunseri said, “Our seniors—Joshua Colley,Zachary Wiser, Joseph Waldo, Kyle Carrera,Matthew Feldkamp, and Paul Ley—will bemissed and hard to replace. It has been apleasure and an honor to have coached thesegentlemen these past three years.”
