Unit 13 Sentence endings
Teaching notesActivityBoard gameAimTo move around the board by making sentences using dependent prepositionsGrammarDependent prepositionsPreparationMake one copy of the board game for each group of three students.Time 15–20 minutesLesson link Unit 13, page 176 This game could also be used to revise dependent prepositions in a future class.
Procedure• Organize students into groups of three. • Give each group a copy of the board game. Ask students to get some individual counters for themselves,
e.g. an eraser or a pen top. They should place their counters on the start square.• Ask students to take out a coin (any coin will do). Explain that they should toss the coin each time a
player has his/her turn. If the coin lands on heads, they move their counter one square forward, if it lands on tails, they move two squares forward.
• Explain that when they land on a square, they must decide which preposition goes with the verb and then complete the sentence. If two players land on the same square they must use a new idea to complete their sentence. Give an example and elicit a possible sentence. For example:
My little sister is looking forward to visiting the theme park next weekend.
• Encourage students to correct each other as they play the game. The first player to reach Finish! is the winner.
• Circulate and check students are using the correct prepositions and forming their sentences accurately. Help out with ideas or vocabulary where you feel it is necessary.
• At the end of the game, if students haven’t made sentences for all the squares, they should complete these as a group. Get some feedback from each group, and finish the activity by doing some error correction with the class.
My little sister is looking
forward ...
