At a quarter past nine in early January, a woman entered the Post Office at Martin Place and inquired of one of the clerks if a letter was awaiting her. It was her third visit in as many days. On this day the clerk was able to assist (help) her.He handed her a letter which she opened immediately. Stepping back from the counter, she quickly looked to see the name of the sender as if to reassure herself, and then, clutching (clasping) the letter in her hand, hurried away with an air of strong nervous anticipation.
