Reading Together has been developedwith our project partners and has benefitedthousands of pupils since it started in 1996.

The project has been hugely popular withchildren, parents and schools and we areproud that the East Anglian Daily Timeshas contributed to helping raise literacyskills of the young.

Reading Togetherand You

We all know how important reading is.In this project we use a cheap, readilyavailable and relevant resource theregional morning newspaper, the EastAnglian Daily Times.

We hope that the ideas given here will, withyour help, encourage children to improvetheir reading and language skills.

These activities are to be carried out both athome and schools to improve literacy skills.

All you have to do is find a little time for yourchild as often as possible (every day wouldbe ideal, but perhaps on the days when thenewspapers are delivered to school) tofollow the activities in the Reading Togethernewspaper. Each activity can be done morethan once.

Reading newspapers together regularly willencourage effective reading, talking andlistening skills.

When?Find a convenient time every day(preferably when you are not too tired!)

Share your reading aloud -if you struggle over a word:

- Pause: Take your time

- Prompt: Refer to the sound of theinitial letter, pictures or meaning

- Praise: If your child gets it right,nearly right, or has a go!

Keep it short and make it fun!
