READING PASSPORT This continues to flourish. Jerwoods classes are all busily reading in the library during English lessons and there is a real buzz of excitement about reading. The Jerwoods Reading Passport is a new initiative by the English Department and the Library which is intended to get children reading, enjoying and talking about books. The idea behind the scheme is to encourage children to read across different genres, perhaps some that they might not normally read, and share thoughts and ideas about their reading. The pupils have received a Reading Passport and a book list and will be taking a journey through ten different genres, reading one book from each genre and filling their passport in with their views of the books as they go. Like a real passport, they will collect stamps for each section completed and once all pages have been stamped, they will have completed their journey and will receive a certificate. Teachers, library staff and tutors are all engaged in talking to the children about their books, and hopefully the scheme will inspire children to read and make reading a part of their everyday lives.
